Reading Sky got me thinking about my sweet Squirrelflight again and her horrible, horrible marriage, so I redrew this piece I wasn’t happy with in a fun new style I’ve been playing with.

Edited, from the old piece: I really love Squirrelflight, and I think about her heartbreaking dealings with romance all the time. She’s not married to the man she fell in love with, but you can see, especially in her Super Edition, that she aches for a hint of the ambitious young Brambleclaw at the sun-drown place again. For the good parts she remembers, maybe so long ago that she’s twisted them to seem better than they really ever were. That’s why All Too Well fits her so well in my mind, it describes that exact situation. Missing something you can’t and shouldn’t go back to. The lyric goes, “I forget about you long enough to forget why I needed to.” It’s been so long since they even slept in the same nest that Squirrelflight finds herself yearning for good times, those sunlit cliffs and vast mountains, even if that journey had its own flaws. She’s looking for something to hold onto. I also like “And did the twin flame bruise paint you blue/Just between us, did the love affair maim you too?” It’s about Taylor Swift and Jake Gyllenhaal both being fire signs (double Sagittarius, wow!) but I think that makes sense for Bramble and Squirrel, if warrior cats had zodiac signs. They’re so fiery, and when they fight, it still is. They’re a fire that burned out and she’s trying to keep it alive. ✩

Design notes:

The flowers + fronds in her fur are respectively are pink azaleas (for passion, love, friendship and joviality), and ferns (for new life, family, secret love, magic, humility and sincerity).

Lots of tiny heart shapes across her design. At her chest, her muzzle, her tail, her right hind leg, left foreleg, right hip and left hind paw!

The only thing this lady got from her momma was her pale fur; she’s Round and Fluffy and Sweet, the prettiest kitty!!

Sectoral heterochromia; mostly green, with yellow flecks. (Bonus for the little heart in yellow!)

From my past Leaf designs, I kept her little behind-the-ear fronds; I’m not sure what to call them, but I really like them. They give her an air of being even softer, evenly as “augur” as “doctor”!

LGBT+ headcanon: Disaster poly-bisexual with a fem lean; genderfae (she/they pronouns).

If relationships like Onestar x Whitetail, Thornclaw x Blossomfal, Ferncloud x Dustpelt, stormtail x moonflower, and Pinestar x Leopardfoot ((and god knows what others im forgetting)) were one-off occurrances they wouldnt be so bad. But, especially after the Erin's piss poor writing/handling of the themes in Spottedleaf's heart, the decision to continue to write these kinds of relationships is UNQUESTIONABLY weird. The Erin's are no strangers to retcons. They had an unlimited amount of opprotunities to change Whitetail to a.) Not get together with Onestar b.) Not make her his apprentice or c.) Not have such a massive timeskip that we don't learn about Whitetail being Onestars apprentice and Onestar having the hots for her *in the same line* They could have done anything. The fact that they framed the relationship that way was a choice. I dont think the Erin's are trying, on purpose, to make Onestar's relalationship creepy. I don't think they are trying to make "Spottedleaf 2".

But I do think that this is reflective of the problem Wc's has had since the first series, these writers do not check their work and neither does their publishing company. Little mistakes like Greystripe claiming Mistyfoot and Stonefur as his own and Heavystep dying 3x over are funny but also exemplify this series biggest problem. Nobody on the team is paying attention to what theyre writing. Warrior Cats books seem to be written quickly and for series books they seem to be written 3 in advance. I assume this is the reason why the books are littered with so many errors and mistakes, the authors have tunnel vision and are writing the books to get to the conclusion as fast as possible without taking the time to really disect what theyre doing.

And just as the authors miss small mistakes like namedropping Mistlekit and never mentioning them again, they make big ones. I remember awhile ago an author responded to the criticism of Bramblestar being an abusive partner that she had literally no idea, and had always imagined him as being strong and noble. This is a very common theme in the Erins' response to criticism. They had no idea that Spottedleaf's heart sends the wrong message to groomed kids, they had no idea that the tribe cats were racist. They still have utterly no idea that Frecklewish going to the darkforest was wrong, and think that Onestar going to Starclan is right. They have no idea how sexist their writing is. They have no idea how abelist their writing is.

I think the writers are completely ignorant, to be honest. And honestly? After the way Vicky responded in her followup post on Spottedleaf's Heart? I dont think that they care. I dont think theyll change as long as fans still buy their books and their merch and promote their name. They dont seem to think it matters. The Erin's dont look at their biases and try to fix their writing because they dont think its important. They say they listen to criticism and change their actions but they dont. They never have. And if you are writing a book series for children, YOU CANT DO THAT!! Because kids are smart! And they will absorb the lessons you teach to them!! Can you imagine this criticism in another fandom?? How completely rancid it would be for just ONE of those kinds of plotlines to show up?? Were so desensitized to it! These books are in elementary school libraries!

As much as I love the worldbuilding of this series and its been a special interest of mine for a lot of years, i would never in my life recommend this book for children. The writers are just too irresponsible. They dont care at all.

I'm thinking about Leafpool's trial in Squirrelflight's hope again, because whilst it's a stupid concept, it's actually very impactful and sticks in my brain the most from that entire book. I love the way it shows StarClan's hypocrisy, but I do think that it needs a bit of a reworking with what cats are involved in it

Currently the cats who take part are : Tallstar, Bluestar, Yellowfang, Moth Flight, Crookedstar and Littlecloud My first changes would be to remove some cats entirely from this line up, and my first removal would be Crookedstar. He is no reason to be there, no connection to the code that are broken, and no personal connection to the Firestar lineage. Tallstar is removed for the exact same reasons. He doesn't need to be there, there's no emotional beat he can add. For similar reasons I'd remove Littlecloud. He's a medicine cat so does have more ties to the codes broken, however he feels a weird pick especially as he is portrayed as antagonistic, which is entirely against his character. He doesn't seem like someone to want that position of power either, I think it would be nice to see him in StarClan but his involvement in the trial doesn't make sense.

This brings us down to Bluestar, Yellowfang, Moth Flight. Now, we need to add some cats to fill out the ranks again. Which brings us to the question of how they were chosen in the first place, and I'll break this down into two criteria : - High ranking (leader, medicine cat, clan founder) - Would want to be involved If it was just based on how long the cats had been in StarClan and their ties to the code, then the cats holding the trial would be the Clan founders. So there must be an element of cats who have an active interest in the trial get involved. My suggestions for replacement cats are : - Oakstar - Goosefeather - Duststar - Hollyleaf Oakstar is a cat who despises cross clan relationships, and general code breaking. He's a known asshole, who relies on harsh punishments. He seems the sort of cat who wants to involve himself in everyone's business, and would still hold a grudge from the Mapleshade situation. He would be all for sending Leafpool to hell Goosefeather is a bit of a wild card in the situation. I like to imagine that in StarClan he gets himself involved in almost everything. He would flick what side he was on randomly throughout the conversation so no one could really tell what his viewpoint was. Duststar. Duststar is the cat who created the code that bans CrossClan relationships, because cats in his clan died due to their relationships with other clans. However, I believe he'd be all for Leafpool. He's there to contrast Moth Flight who wants to enforce her rule with an iron fist. He understands that Leafpool did wrong, but no one got hurt in the same way he experienced, so in his mind the code is void here. Hollyleaf would not be an official part of the trial, however I think she would barge her way in. I just want to see more of her I'm a big Hollyleaf fan. I think Leafpool would freeze up at seeing her, thinking that Hollyleaf would want to condemn her, but I'd like to give Hollyleaf a chance to properly show her forgiveness after death as well. So we have the line up as In support of Leafpool : Yellowfang, Duststar, Hollyleaf (eventually) Against Leafpool : Duststar, Oakstar, Moth Flight, Bluestar (I LOVE the depiction of her as a hypocrite here. It stays. She is eventually convinced to join the other side but it takes a while) Wild card : Goosefeather (they should ban this man from these meetings) I don't know. I just feel like Tallstar, Crookedstar and Littlecloud have no real emotional stakes in it, when the trial is really a chance for cats to air their own grievances with the code or the way that StarClan functions. It's clear no one cares about Leafpool's situation and only wants to insist on their views, so I feel like we should drag up some old bitter cats to highlight that. The contrast between Duststar and Moth Flight would also be an incredibly fun debate about the harsh nature of the code.
