Games to Play With Your SSO Club
I ran a hangout club for a couple years where we had weekly activities of just playing games and chatting. Here's a list of games we came up with, and short descriptions of how to play them.
Feel free to take these games and play them and change them around as you please. I don't really claim any of these as my ideas since they're just normal playground games made to work in SSO.
Share these as much as you can, too! I'd love to see more hangout clubs with fun activities like these!
Floor is Lava
We played this in a few different ways. In all versions the leader would call out "The Floor is Lava!" and we'd all scramble to climb up on top of something. Either there is a time limit and whoever is still on the ground when time is up is out, or there'd be no time limit and it's just whoever is on the ground last is out. Repeat until you have a winner. Sometimes we'd all gather together specifically to play this and we'd all be ready. Other times the leader would just call it out randomly while we were doing other activities. This was a fun way to spice up trail rides and such.
Hide and Seek
For small groups: One person is chosen as the seeker. They leave, or just trust them to cover their eyes, while everyone else hides. After a set amount of time, or when everyone confirms that they're hidden, the seeker hunts down all of the hiders.
For large groups: One person, or a few people, are chosen as the hiders. Everyone stays together in a group and the hiders run off and hide. After the hiders confirm that they are hidden, the seekers go on the hunt. When you find someone you hide with them. Eventually the hiding spot become a chaotic stack of people. It's very fun!
Remember to set clear limits of where someone can hide! For our small group we liked to limit people to the inside of Firgrove Village or Silverglade Village. We also had the hiders on foot and the seeker on horseback. For the large group we set the entirety of Moorland area as the limit, and everyone stayed on their horses.
Never Have I Ever
Set a finish line. A fence works best. Everyone line up an equal distance away from the finish line. Take turns saying something you've never done. Everyone who has done the thing moves forward one horse length. Everyone who hasn't done the thing stays still. First person to reach the finish line wins!
We made it a rule for the things you've never done to be related to SSO, just to make sure it was kept appropriate for our younger club members. Feel free to set whatever theme you'd like!
Fashion Show
Everyone meets at a storage container. Either at the mall, in the club riding arena, or in someone's homestable. Choose a theme for an outfit. Everyone dress yourselves according to the theme. Either choose judges(we usually had whoever won last be the judge) or just have everyone vote on the winner(in which case the prize can be choosing the theme for the next round).
Truth or Dare
The first person asks someone "truth or dare?" If they choose truth, they have to answer a question. If they choose dare, they have to do a dare. Once they are finished, they ask the next person "truth or dare?" Repeat this until everyone has had a turn. This is yet another game that we limited to SSO-related questions and dares only. We also had some rules about not daring to break the rules or have to buy anything. Just no mean spirited dares. It'd be a good idea to set some rules of your own for this game.
Tag
Choose an area everyone has to stay in. Choose someone to be It. The person who is It tries to chase down everyone else and tag them. To tag someone we either had the person who is It do an emote at them or send them a group invite if you don't wanna play with chat open. If you get tagged you are now It and must try to tag someone else.
Tag is a game well known for having multiple different versions, so go ahead and make this game your own, using this basic idea to invent multiple different games.
Simon Says
Choose someone to be Simon. Everyone else line up in front of them. Everyone do what Simon Says, but only if they start it with "Simon says...". If you miss an order, or follow an order not from Simon, then you're out. Keep going until you have a final winner.
Scavenger Hunt
The host of the game will come up with a list of things to hunt for. They can be specific places, items, npcs, or a special pose or action. The players run around the world and take pictures of the items on the list. First person with a picture of each of the items on the list wins. This is fun to do in groups or pairs, as well!
Relay Race
Split into teams. Plan out where the race will be. We often used the races, but you can just pick a start and finish line somewhere on the map instead if you like. Station the team members along the route you chose. They wait until their teammate tags them and then will race to the next teammate. Keep going until the last member of the team races to the finish line. We used the emote/group invite method to tag each other, just like we did with tag, but you can also use just reaching an area if you'd like.
Room Bingo
Take turns saying something that's in the room you're currently in. Everyone who also has that in their room gets a point. First person who gets a set number of points wins. We usually went to 10 points, but you can change that.
20 Questions
Choose a person to think of something. Everyone else takes turns asking yes or no questions about the thing. The aim is to guess what the first person is thinking of before you've asked 20 questions. You can change the number of questions or make them unlimited though. This is another other we limited to SSO things.
Eye Spy
Pretty similar to 20 questions. Choose someone to be the Spy. They look around and pick something to be what they spy. It has to be something they can currently see in game. Everyone else takes turns asking questions or guessing what it is they spy.
Story Time
We liked to play this game around a campfire. Choose someone to start. They start telling a story, and then each person takes a turn adding to the story. We limited people to one sentence, or a few words. These stories almost always ended up getting pretty wild!
Two Truths and a Lie
Take turns telling two truths and a lie about yourself and having everyone guess which one is the lie. This one was limited to SSO-themed truths and lies.
Guess Who
Choose someone to be the impersonator. Their job is to dress up as much as they can as someone else. Everyone else has to guess who they dressed up as. We limited who they dress up as to club members one time, and SSO NPCs another. Feel free to set up your own themes and rules!
Duck Duck Goose
Choose someone to be the farmer. Everyone except the farmer get in a circle. The farmer goes around the circle calling everyone a duck by emoting a certain emote at them. At random, they choose a goose by doing a different emote at them. The goose then gets out of the circle and chases the farmer, trying to catch them before they can make it around the circle again and take the goose's spot. Whoever gets around the circle and back to the goose's spot again wins and the loser is now the farmer.
Musical Horses
Choose someone to be the DJ. Everyone else park your horses in a line, except park one horse off to the side so there's less horses than players. The DJ plays music and everyone runs on foot around the horses. The DJ pauses the music at random and everyone scrambles to claim a horse. We claimed horses by standing in front, behind, or underneath them. Whoever is left without a horse is out. Remove one of the horses from the line so there's less horses than players again. Repeat until there is a winner.

Just a Moment to Appreciate the Haunted Trail Ride
Okay, so Halloween has, I think, always been my favorite SSO holiday, particularly with Galloper’s Keep. If I remember correctly, the first year they added the Keep, the Halloween soundtrack has ended up in my “most played/repeated songs” playlists on Spotify at least once. Because I love it, especially the Keep track. I’d just throw that puppy on repeat and have a grand time. Even when it was distinctly not Halloween to, y’know, the general public.
So yeah, that’s great, Halloween music, love it, but anyway, my actual point I wanna mention here is the Haunted Trail Ride.
It’s a neat little experience. I haven’t run it to death between being a full time college student + working part time on top of that, and there’s definitely a little extra jazz to doing it with the newly obtainable Raven pet from the collectibles on the trail ride, and all of those are cool points that make it an enjoyable feature, but what I think really sells me on it is, you guess it, the music.
Clear the air, I’m not a music major. I have very minimal music knowledge - whatever was taught to me in school, and, let’s be real, I didn’t retain a lot of it. But what is so stinkin’ cool about the Haunted Ride music is how it’s adaptive.
You have your base Haunted Trail Ride music that starts up at the beginning and does play through most of the ride, but - it fades in and out and changes dependent upon what encounters you get.
The newest, shiniest example is the Songsorrow’s song, which I really hope to have individually one day because I think it’s one of my new favorites. So, if you don’t know, a Songsorrow can spawn along the first stretch of beach you can access shortly in to the ride. She is accompanied first by a ghost looking out over the water towards the village that you’ll spot first - he mentions how his daughter went missing by the sea one day, and how, before she disappeared, she was always humming a haunting melody.
When you approach the Songsorrow, your usual music fades out to a much more somber, sorrowful tone, and you can just sit there and listen to it for a while if you want. Then, of course, you can interact with the Songsorrow, and there’s a couple added sound effect beats here and your usual change in music indicating something dangerous is happening before you’re spat back out on shore back on your horse, and it’ll play the little sad tune again for you so long as you linger in that little beach area.
Back on the trail, your main theme picks up. If you head left up the path towards the cave where you can find Bob always hanging out for some reason (in the case of a Songsorrow spawn, this is the trail branching left away from the wolves that surround what I think is a male adult figure and a younger girl(?) Hard to tell exactly because they vanish when you get too close), your music will change again into something a bit more mysterious and dark.
And there’s a couple more instances of this throughout the ride. This sort of fade out and in is actually relatively prominent in most of their Halloween event instances. Another time I notice it is during your pumpkin hunts. There’s obviously a full track there (it is available on their Spotify Halloween album, I believe), but it’s generally timed to fade in and out rather well with the stages of your pumpkin hunt. And it’s just another really fun upbeat fun little track for a fun activity.
So, anyway, thanks for coming to my TED talk on why SSO Halloween music is some of the coolest in the entire game.

HOLD ON tired, late night theory time
I will preface this rant by noting the possibility that SSO reuses items and animations that are already in their possession. But.
Galloper’s race and his trail ride share a few similarities with the race where we run from Sabine once we’ve got the keystone from the stonecutter’s vault. The giant pillars of ice crashing into the ground, the tree roots that grow and block your way. These are powers that a dark rider apparently possesses, powers Garnok grants to other people, powers that Galloper has seen before.
It’s clear that Galloper’s race is a part of his memories, and it’s not outside the realm of possibilities that the trail ride was too. So here’s a theory.
Garnok crashed into the ocean and began corrupting certain people in Jarlaheim. The people that opposed Jon Jarl, the people that didn’t want him to join up with the druids, were led by someone who had been corrupt by Garnok. Someone with similar powers to Sabine. That’s why we see these powers in Galloper’s memories.
Galloper Thompson and the stonecutter Magus hide in Dino Valley to create a keystone similar to the one we have, which Fripp will use to seal Garnok away in Pandoria. This is why he’s banished from his home, because he dropped a wet angry squid into their land. This is also what he’s doing in Dino Valley in the memory race, and why giant pillars of ice crash into the snow. The dark rider/s found him, and they’re hunting him.
The war ensues, and the reason people are so amazed by Thompson’s ability to survive is because someone on the other team has control over nature itself, and no man can survive their wrath. But somehow, Thompson can. A powerful being that can skewer ten men by a flick of the finger cannot hurt Thompson.
The fact that the dark rider didn’t hurt him, as well as the fact that he doesn’t have “aideen’s light” might lead Jon Jarl and Fripp to believe that Thompson is a double agent or is also corrupted, and that’s why they have him executed. Which is a fair point, but they’re still dicks.
Anyway be sure to check back in a year where I have definitely been proven wrong, see ya

I was so dummy happy with the Starshine Ranch update today! The ranch is so beautiful and had so much care put into all its little details. It was fun to see so many people calling it the 2020 area release SSO didn’t promise haha Mistfall was our last new area release at the end of 2017, and I know we’re all starving for a new one. But I got thinking though about how the game’s changed over the last two years despite, and it’s kind of jaw dropping. I threw everything I could think of in a list:
Christmas Village
New New Years Eve Party
Galloper’s Keep
the Purple Pony
Running/Flying Pets (cats, foxes, seagulls, dogs)
Wild Horse Feature
Photo Mode
Ydris & circus redesign + consequential take off of the story quests
Saved everyone on our “To Rescue” list
Honestly the quest quality in terms of animations and cinematic
The new horses have been absolutely top notch
New Midsummer Festival
Added the new Journal Feature (character profiles, lore, collectibles, achievements)
Rescue Ranch
Island Graphic Overhaul + area specific overhauls (South Hoof, Firgrove, Fort Pinta, Doyle’s Abbey, Moorland, Golden Hills, Durid Paddock)
There’s freaking birds and butterflies and bees and fireflies everywhere that makes Jorvik feel so alive
all the farm animals got updated too!
Starter Horse Upgrade #2
All the NPC upgrades!
Character Musicians: Lisa, DJ Kai, the Miscreants
Red String Trail
Okay but I really loved the Flying Foxes quests
Light Ride
So many amazing Jorvik Wilds
Lots of tack upgrades!!
The new hunt quests they did for the holidays (pumpkins+goats)
Global Store
Soul Riding
Starshine Ranch 🎉
AND WOW!! Honestly standing ovation to you SSO!  🥂
They’ve done so many great updates lately and have put a lot of love and care into improving the game’s overall quality. The job is not yet done, but fantastic work overall. Proud of you team 💕

Completely Harmless Appendix 7
Appendix: Rainbow Week
1.     Rainbow Week/Luck Day/Valentine’s/JoJo Siwa/Red String Trail Ride
Holidays, in my opinions, should be events. My favorite thing the first time I played in Star Stable was around Christmas and we had all these Christmas Quests to decorate the county. Then they took that out and it was blah. So, I wanted to bring that Christmas style feeling back where you’re going around and decorating the county or your area of the county and then you have stuff to do during the actual festival.
Tumblr media
You can do holidays one of three ways, you do it like Christmas where there’s a set thing every year. Or you can it so that the holiday has progressive story, so each time it comes around (say Fashion Week) a little more of the story is unlocked and you can only do new story if you’ve progressed through the old. That way you don’t have NPCs talking about current story lines when the new players haven’t gotten that far in the story.
Or, you work your plot into the holidays. And then as the plot progresses, you’ll have more holidays as the years of your plot move forward. However, this requires that you have all of your story and map completed before launching the game. I chose number three for the story because it was convenient writing wise. (For Mystic Riders we go with option one.)
Tumblr media
To Rainbow Week in particular, Rainbow Week was something they introduced in 2019 to “replace” the Fortuna Festival, which they only did one or two years. It was supposed to be celebrating friendship? Basically, what happened, was the rainbows crashed and that’s about it. (I am not touching Mica. Nope. Nope.) They might have had the parade with the Bobcats. But there weren’t any quests anymore. The quests were all about setting up the parade route, decorating, and helping Tan make the outfits. Which were cool in a way except the Bobcats were foisting their duties on you because of nails. Maybe they took them out because they’re trying to change the Bobcats story image? I dunno. We older players know the truth.
And then there is Valentine’s Day which also celebrates friendship and love where they have the group race. There used to be quests about making teddy bears and a chocolate and berry cake. Then you had the letters with Derek. They removed those and that was sad. So I put them back in.
Tumblr media
Then there is the Red String Trail Ride which you do in the “spring” and celebrates Friendship. Which was a trail ride with some random events programmed into it. It appropriates (yes, appropriates) the Chinese story about the red string that connects people’s hearts. I’m not really a fan of appropriation. It’s in the game. I can’t really do anything about it.
Lastly, they had Jojo Siwa in the game as a licensing gimmick. She likes rainbows and sings about friendship. They had you find bows in Moorland in order to trade them in for items. I expanded this across the entire county and then also had the player hand out bows in order to spread the news of friendship and love and Jojo Siwa to people in the district so they’d come watch Jojo. (Something that SSO didn’t do.)
Tumblr media
I mashed all of these together because they share the same theme to make Rainbow Week more exciting. This meant adding in more musicians and having fun treats, and being able to make crafts for the housing we don’t have yet. (I guess it’s going to come sometime in the next decade.) Fortuna Festival gave clues that these holidays are Club led so that’s why I ran with the clubs doing the festivities. And having things like special crafts, charms for a friendship bracelet and the selfie walls would encourage everyone to travel all over the county to collect things. Plus having things like the treasure hunt and of course, Chaun and his rainbow spices things up.
Instead of having Chaun give random items, I instead gave him a shop so that everyone can get the items they want. The other idea could be to use the same mechanic as the big pumpkins and the goats, and have a lottery system. But I really do prefer shops more.
Tumblr media
Brogan is my own invention. (As is Fill-E, the all girl j-pop band.) His game mechanics would be similar to having Spirit in the game. He shows up somewhere in the area after the rainbow crashes and you catch him and he’ll give you a task. That task rewards you with rainbow gold and reputation points until you reach admired with Brogan. Once you reach admired, you can take him to a Chaun and he’ll open a shop for you to exchange your rainbow gold for items with Brogan. His items will be different than Chauns.
And of course, once the decorations go up, they have to come down.
Tumblr media
I also included an Art Show for Fort Pinta and a Flea Market for Firgrove. (The Farmer’s Market would continue as usual except it’d be decorated. Same for the Horse Market.) These two areas could have arts and crafts that are rainbow themed and available for the player to purchase again for home decoration or jewelry or clothes, etc and so forth. There could also be special rainbow themed makeup going on at the salons. There could be shops featuring rainbow themed clothes, but they aren’t paying me that much to do that for free.
FOR THE ACCOMPANYING IMAGES PLEASE DO NOT REMOVE MY WATERMARK AND CONTACT INFORMATION. THANK YOU. I get it. Some of you might get excited and want to see this stuff in the game, especially the clothes, tack, and pets. However, the only way I want to see this in the game is if I get paid for it. If I see it in the game and I’m not paid for it, there will be hell to pay. You think I’m salty. I’d be angry. Personally, I’m not going to send this info to SSO. If you do, leave my contact information there! Don’t give them any excuses to steal.
Now, I’ll know you haven’t read this note if you leave me comments about how ‘salty’ I am about the game and if I hate it so much I should do something else. I am doing something else. It’s called Mystic Riders MMORPG Project. Mystic Riders however is a very baby phase game. You can check out our plans on the game dev blog. (Skills, Factions, Professions, Crafting, Mini-Games, 25+ horse breeds!) If you know anyone who would be interested and has money or contacts about game making, direct them to the blog.

Eventually we have a plan
Eventually. It takes a while though.
Zone back in on Anya continuing to run like the lone black man in Scotland as she tries to get the fuck away from the werewolves that have been set upon her. As she continues to run to the point where she’ll get fatigue damage, her wounded leg gives out. Pulling out her bag off tricks, she gets a boar to help her move. While she can’t ride him, she can lean on him. But before she can get to far she hears something behind her, a large black horse is sneaking behind her. Literally sneaking, she’s got good ears and he’s hard to find.
When her boar disapears and she falls, the horse comes up to her. Anya yells at it and calls it a were-horse and tells it that if it’s going to kill her, she’ll fight to the end. The wolves howl louder in the distance, and with some ‘stomp if you want to help’ action Anya realizes the unicorn is there to help. He kneels down sso she can climb on before getting the fuck out of dodge.
Flash back a few hours to the hall, with Juno being like ‘Find her. Bring her back alive, she needs to answer questions. I don’t care what shape she’s in as long as she can talk.” Deidric tries to get Nitahn to come with him, but that’s quickly shot down by Juno because she needs him to move. Deidric takes out a hunting party and all the wolves.
Juno goes into damage control mode after that, praising everyone’s calmness when the family turned into werewolves. Magnolia makes a faux paus by making a bad joke and Juno reacts basiccally like ‘why is that servant talking’ but a steward takes Magnolia out of the hall and recomends she spends her time not attracting attention from the Lady.
It’s at this point Jakes gets his ‘invitiation’ to stay in the castle, and Juno sends men down to get his things. Including that silver scythe he keeps. Y’know. Because things weren’t complicated enough. She also excuses Oz and Vera to their rooms after all the fuss and tells them that the person had been in their rooms likely looking for something nto steal, and again offers to let Nitahn stay in the castle, which he plays off by being a traveler unacoustomed to kindness.
Magnolia beats feet to the inn to try and beat the servants there, but she can’t beat them. She kills time in the bar, tipping deccently and pretending to drown her sorros that jake isn’t there. The servants return and deliver jake his belongings, but his scythe isn’t there.
Vera and Oz check their rooms and indeed they were tossed, but everything’s in place. They talk for a minute about what to tell Juno regarding why Oz is under vera’s protection and were like ‘yeah that was totally Anya, also Juno had her people go through our shit.’
NItahn goes back to his caravan and is joined much later by Vlad, who goes over the plan to punch him the next day so Nitahn can be a puppy. He also mentions that his mother doesn’t trust Vera and thinks she’s lying about being a paladin. Which, fair. The next morning he does as planned, waking Nitahn up and punching him into puppy.
Vera leaves the next morning only to have Juno invite herself along on Vera’s morning prayer. Vera warns her it’ll be boring, but can’t turn down such company They chat and Juno asks to see Vera’s sword. Vera hands it over with a warning of it’s silver nature, and oh no Juno cuts herself. Vera quips that she keeps it sharp in this country and heals her with lay on hands. Vera goes into her morning prayers and Juno’s like ‘it’s 5am and I have way better things to do’ and dips after watching Vera pray for like 45 minutes because that’s not creepy.
Meanwhile, Nitahn smelled Vera and was like ‘!!!!’ and tried to run to her, but Vlad smelled his mother and was like -TACKLE- and managed to keep him pinned for a good long time. Vlad is like ‘Why was my mother there?!” and Vera was like ‘It was very stressful’ before going to put a hand on Nitahn to cast on him, but doesn’t make it before he changes into a human again.
“You let me eat birds?!” He squaks, and Vera and Vlad are both like ‘oh fuck yeah, good job dude’. “You were enjoying them!” “Did you get that rock out of my mouth before I ate it?” “You threw it up later!” “You could’ve taken those snakes away from me! Those could kill me, Vlad!” “Yes, those could kill me: Vlad!” “What the fuck is in the river?!” “I have no idea.”
Meanwhile Anya wakes up and has no idea where the fuck she is. She’s back in Steve’s forest! But before she can figure that out, or Steve can deal with the situation, the necklace pulls her back in and spits her out with Vlad, Vera, and Nitahn. Nitahn gets pissed when he realizes she was the one who nearly got caught, because now half the group is out on the hunt and we have no idea where they are. Vera is like ‘Well< I did ask her to scout’ and Nitahn turns on her a bit. They all argue.
This is wehre things get fuzzy, because Vera, Nitahn, and Anya were in one conversation, Jake and Oz in another, and Magnola had a conversation with Sam as the DM. I didn’t catch much of Jake and Oz’s part, but Magnolia went back to the inn and found out the innkeeper had hidden the scythe because Jake had been such a good tipper he didn’t want him killed. She headed back to the caravan to toss the scythe there (as well as drop her own staff off).
A plan formed and was relayed to Oz through Veli, who would tell Jake. Vlad would catch some animals and put Anya’s blood on them to make a fresh trail for the hunting party to follow in case they came back, since they likely wouldn’t want to come back empty handed. He’d also go into the undercroft and make discreete marks on the doors where people are being held. The group plans to sneak in and zerg rush the tunnels, hopefully killing any werewolf guards before they can get info back to Juno, because while Vlad doesn’t mind killing her he seems cautious about the idea of trying. Not sure if that’s because she’s powerful, or because she’s his mother and she’ll always be nemesis. After that, we get the people back to the wagon and get the fuck out of dodge and into vampire country.
NItahn is very against Vera going into the tunnels, and Vera’s very much against staying outside, because she has bear and she has her sword, and she can deal a lot of damage. Nitahn’s like ‘Vera you are getting very pregnant’ and it takes a minute for Vera to realize that he cares about her and that’s why he’s insisting she not come, which she tells him she appreciates. But she’s not gonna stay at the cart.

The thing I love the most with this part is how silent it all is.
No screams no battle music. Just soft spooky soundtrack. Like you stand there. Watching garnok attack but its not save the day moment, its just watching or leaving because there is nothing you can do.

If anyone hasnt found out already. Once a day (or two) you can find a hidden shard in the hunted trail ride.
I think someone said they found one shard while doing the trail with a group. So one shard on solo rides and one shard in group rides.

Hi! Can you please explain how to get to the pumpkin field ? I've searched all the trail and still can't find that place.
You havent have it?
It's probably the one thing I get the most.
Its not hard to find, it's actually pretty hard to miss now when I think about it.
When you start the trail, you walk up the mountain as normal and go past the ghost stories and behind them are what I call the pumpkin field. You will hear them snorring and there will be both possesed pumpkins and normal pumpkins. The whole area will be filled with them.
I think even if you instead walk left up the mountain before the ghost stories and walk past the stone circle up there you will still get to the pumpkins. So I dont think you can avoid them?
If you still never seen them, maybe its based on time of day like how the red string trail was. I always play around 14-16.
