Mount St. Helens, A Mountain Reborn
The cataclysmic eruption of Mount St. Helens on the morning of May 18, 1980, instantly transformed the glacier-capped volcano and its surrounding forests and lakes into an unrecognizable landscape. Moments before the volcano erupted, an earthquake accompanied the collapse of 3.7 billion cubic yards of land on the north flank of the mountain—one of the largest landslides in recorded history! The lateral blast that instantaneously followed the landslide flattened everything in its path—as far as 17 miles away from the volcano. Pyroclastic flows covered the land to the north of the volcano with a mixture of hot gases and debris while the vertical eruption column sent ash and gas high into the atmosphere.
In addition to altering the volcano’s physical landscape, the eruption catastrophically disrupted its productive mountain ecosystem. In the years and decades that followed, however, streams carved new paths through the volcanic deposits, the volcano grew bulky lava domes, and within the steep crater walls, a new glacier was born. Today, plants and animals have repopulated the lakes and lands around the volcano and life is once again flourishing.
Read more below for examples of how the landscape of Mount St. Helens has been continuously transformed since the eruption of 1980.
1  Lava Domes
Between 1980 and 1986, a series of smaller eruptions formed a lava dome in the crater of Mount St. Helens. These eruptions added an estimated 101 to 119 million cubic yards of lava to the crater. An eruption from 2004 to 2008 formed a series of dacite spines that added an additional lava dome with 121 million cubic yards of material—enough to fill almost 37,000 Olympic swimming pools!
2  Crater Glacier
Movement in the crater snowfield in the mid-1990s signaled the arrival of Crater Glacier (also known as Tulutson Glacier). Since then, a combination of shade from a north-facing aspect and high crater walls, avalanches of snow, ice, and rock from the crater rim, and an insulating rock cover have fueled the glacier’s continuous growth. In 2004, erupting lava began squeezing the glacier against the crater walls accelerating its downslope flow. Four years later the east and west arms of the glaciers merged, completely encircling the lava domes.
3  Spirit Lake
The debris avalanche from the 1980 eruption completely displaced Spirit Lake, pushing its waters 800 feet up the opposite slopes and completely filling the former lake basin with volcanic sediment. Amazingly, the elevation of the current lakebed is now higher than the lake’s previous surface. Although the lake is not as deep as before, the shoreline is 200 ft higher than it once was and the surface area is nearly double its previous size. In the decades since the eruption, life has returned to the lake. Phytoplankton, the base of the aquatic food chain, reemerged, followed by frogs and salamanders. Rainbow trout, likely reintroduced by humans, now thrive in the lake’s waters. A persistent mat of floating logs, remnant of the former surrounding forest, now covers 15–20 percent of the lake, providing additional habitat for insects and other life.
4  Pumice Plain
Pyroclastic flows from the initial and subsequent 1980 eruptions of Mount St. Helens blanketed the surface of the debris avalanche directly north of the mountain and left behind a barren zone known as the ‘Pumice Plain’. Incredibly, within two years, native lupine plants bloomed on this sterile landscape. In turn, lupine added essential nutrients to the soil while also providing anchor points for other plants to take hold. In the decades since the eruption, many other native plants and animals, including pocket gophers and elk, have gradually returned to the Pumice Plain. It has become an invaluable living laboratory for scientists seeking to study how landscapes recover and develop after a seemingly catastrophic geologic event.
5  North Fork Toutle River
The debris avalanche completely buried the upper North Fork Toutle River near the mountain. Hours after the eruption, a volcanic mudflow known as a lahar entered the lower reach of the river as ice and snow meltwater, groundwater, and sediment flowed from the deposit. The lahar traveled down the Toutle and Cowlitz River system to the Columbia River, choking downstream channels with sediment and debris. Today, the river winds a new course by eroding and transporting debris avalanche sediment down river. Including the lahar, over 400 million tons of sediment have entered the river system since 1980, yet only about 15 percent of the deposit has been eroded. Although many structures have been built to contain sediment and manage flooding, sediment continues to flow into the river promising the 1980 eruption and debris avalanche will continue to reshape the North Fork Toutle River into the foreseeable future.

[UNDER CONSTRUCTION - CAPTION COMING SOON 2 A TUMBLR DASHBOARD NEAR U]
With the Winter of 186x soon coming to a close, the settlement welcomed a new wagon train just in time for spring.
Caroline Chaires was freed by the end of the Civil War. Although her brother, Amos, had huge plans and longed to go west to make something of himself, leaving the past behind him, Caroline struggled to leave behind the place she considered to be her home: after all, it was all she had ever known, and she yearned to cling onto it as the end of the war put her life on an uncertain path. Finally, though, Amos won out, and Caroline and her brother joined a wagon train westward. Unfortunately, Amos grew ill halfway through the journey, and died of cholera a few months before their arrival in Minnesota, leaving his sister alone and stuck in a foreign place, far from her home, friends, and the parents she’d left behind.
(I just realized that I forgot to mention that Caroline is a slightly made-over version of @lilith-sims‘ Deja, so thanks to lilith for such a beautiful sim)!
Gustav Schwartz left Germany at the age of fourteen, stowing away on a ship to America in search of riches and opportunity. Despite the atrocious conditions in steerage, Gustav maintained his big heart and his relentless optimism. During the journey, he was even able to reconnect with Alexander Church, a native to St. Louis who had once worked alongside Gustav when he had first arrived in St. Louis and began to learn English. Alexander was the son of former slaves who had escaped during the war and fled to St. Louis, barely eking out a living as a railroad worker and doing odd jobs for neighbors. After several months of working together, Gustav’s relentless optimism and dreams of moving west inspired Alexander to join him on his journey. The two spent months traveling alongside one another after learning they had joined the same wagon train; Gustav gave Alexander a few tips on farming while Alexander filled in the gaps in his knowledge of English, and they soon became close friends. Now, each of them seeks to build a new life for themselves in the west of the “land of opportunity.”
Hürrem “Helen” Çağlayan was born and raised in Tétouan, Morocco, until the Spanish-Moroccan War (also called the Hispano-Moroccan War) quite literally showed up on her doorstep. The Battle of Tétouan left Hürrem to bury her father and brother, as both were killed in the fighting. However, a sympathetic Spanish soldier took a shine to her, taking her on as a servant (and, soon enough, as a wife), nicknaming her “Helen.” Without anything to keep her in Morocco, and with memories of her past haunting her at every turn, she agreed to return to Spain with her new husband, Antonio Casaviella.* Despite their rapid courtship and marriage, the two were passably happy together, and welcomed a daughter in the winter of 1861. During a visit to America to visit one of Antonio’s relatives who had immigrated there, the promise of gold and free land caught Antonio’s eye, and he urged his wife to join him. Reluctantly, Hürrem agreed, and prepared for an even longer journey after the month-long ocean voyage to the American coast. Unfortunately, both Antonio and Hürrem’s young daughter succumbed to the same outbreak of cholera that claimed the lives of several others during their journey, leaving Hürrem alone in a foreign land in which she barely spoke the language. However, it was far too late to turn back, and Antonio had sunk the last of their savings into the trip westward, leaving Hürrem both without a home to return to or the money to get there. However, she is determined to make the best of a horrific situation, grieving her husband and child while hoping to find a new, permanent place to finally call home.
*I meant to name him via a roster of Spanish soldiers who fought in Tétouan, but couldn’t find one (I could only find general news reports on the war and the battle rather than specific names, apart from this section on Wikipedia). I didn’t want to use a real name (i.e. one of the few names I could find via the list on Wikipedia) since that would feel a little weird, so I used Leopoldo O'Donnell (a Spanish general and the eventual Prime Minister of Spain)’s mother’s maternal last name (apologies if the terminology is wrong), Casaviella, and Antonio Ros de Olano, who fought in the Battle of Guad-el-Jelú, another divisive battle in the Hispano-Moroccan War. You can read more about each of them here, here (content warning: mention of brutality/torture of enslaved individuals) and here (unfortunately, I couldn’t find any other sources about Antonio in English, but there are some excellent sources listed under the Wikipedia article).
Inderjit “Ida” Kaur faced constant discrimination and eventual famine at the hands of the British during the first twenty years of her life in the Punjab region of India, and losing her mother and sister to famine in 1860 meant that she jumped at the chance to escape British persecution. She immigrated to the U.S. in late 1861. Although she had lived a somewhat-comfortable middle-class life prior, her savings had run dry by the time she reached America, throwing her headfirst into poverty. She toiled for months in a garment factory near the coast until one of her friends in the factory spread word of free land in the west. That land promised the independence she dreamed of, hopefully far away from the racism and Islamophobia which still ran rampant, and a hopefully-comfortable life through which she could gain back some of what she had lost.
James Reid is a name some of you might recognize, the son of former-slave-turned-wealthy-business-owner Matthew Reid, whose family looked after Lydia’s younger sister, Susanna Harrison, while Lydia joined the wagon train west to throw slave-catchers off her sister’s trail. After graduating from university, James Reid was sent with Susanna to ensure her safety on the journey to be reunited with her sister, but after reaching [still unnamed homestead town], he quickly got other ideas. Although he had grown up in the lap of luxury, “roughing it” a little in the Minnesotan forests didn’t seem too bad. Although his father was disappointed that he didn’t want to continue on the family business, he was relieved that Susanna and Lydia would have someone to look after them, as Matthew had grown rather fond of the girls and treated them like his own children.

Quote
Though Margaret may well have regarded the duke of York with wariness from 1453 if not before, she acquiesced to his first protectorate, instead of the regency she had desired, without overt hostility. The first battle of St Albans in 1455 and York's second protectorate changed that. Having pushed for his ouster, she soon sought expanded public power for herself again, though this time through the more traditional and informal avenues of influence to which she already had access as queen. Nevertheless, through the next couple of years it appears that she was content to pursue a policy that combined control with limited conciliation and that stopped well short of seeking anyone's destruction. Though the picture becomes very murky as the situation deteriorated to the outbreak of civil war, by which time Margaret had become an uncompromising partisan, it is clear that she came to this posture rather late. Nor does she appear as the vengeful she-wolf until nearly the end of the reign, when the circumstances of a Yorkist military victory and settlement of the crown had made her one.

Reseña: Kill 'Em All
Metallica (1983)
reseñado el 14 de junio
Categoría: Álbum
Género: metal
Lo he aceptado. Ya no me da pena decirlo. Amo a Metallica.

Final Thoughts
We hear nothing about Thornfield--what happened to the lands? They still belong to the Rochesters. And the ruins--are they just going to stand there, with no attempt at rebuilding at least part of the old Hall?
No word about the poor state of Ferndean Manor (the place that Rochester claimed had walls so damp that, should he have moved her there, they would eventually kill Bertha) and whether the happy couple did any renovating. Jane told us in detail about how she cleaned Moor House, a house that was her home for only a short time, and purchased new furniture for it. On the subject of her married home, however, she has nothing to say.
She seems not to be bothered about living so far from the nearest human settlement. I wonder what it's like in winter (their reunion was in June, so if the place looked deserted then, what about January?) I wonder how many deliveries are missed because the tradesmen can't make it to Ferndean. I suppose it's also why they couldn't hire a nurse to help out with Edward's condition. A live-out one would not be able to get there daily and they wouldn't be able to accommodate a live-in one, unless they made some repairs to the house (which, as Jane tells us, only had three functioning rooms. With time there would have to be more, but as Jane provides no info on this, all we're left with is speculation.).
I wonder what it's like for children to grow up in such a place. Seeing who their parents are, the poor fuckers must be so hideous it's better they're hidden from the rest of the world.
Sorry. That was mean. It was her constantly going on about Rochester's ugliness and her own plainness, not me. I'm innocent!
Maybe the little buggers got lucky and inherited more favourable genes.
We get no word about Mrs Fairfax, whether Jane kept in touch with her or not. Remember, Alice Fairfax was not just a housekeeper at Thornfield, she was a widow of Edward's relative. Did Jane ever write to her of their marriage (this time it's for real)? Did Mrs Fairfax send them a letter of congratulations?
We're given no information about the merry company.
Jane told us of what became of her other cousins, the Reeds, earlier, in the chapter when she returned from Gateshead to Thornfield. Georgiana, the beauty Lord Ingram mentioned, married a wealthy man and Eliza, the pious one, converted to Catholicism and became a nun at a French convent, later rising to a superior. It's interesting that two not exactly sympathetic--though not as evil as their mother--characters received such positive outcomes.
Look at the similarity in cousinhood: Jane has two sets of cousins, two girls and one boy each. The Reeds on her mothers side: John, Georgiana, Eliza and the Riverses on her father's side: St John, Diana, Mary. The men share the same name (for the most part) and they both die, while all the women get happy endings.
There are characters that feature in the narrative that I haven't mentioned. Helen Burns, Jane's dear friend at Lowood, who died; Miss Temple, the good teacher at Lowood, who got married and went away--the catalyst that made Jane seek out employment as a governess. Then, from Jane's time at Morton, Miss Rosamond Oliver, daughter of the area's richest man. I left her out because she's irrelevant to my recaps, but it's important to note that this is the beautiful and fashionable female character who is NOT presented in a negative way (unlike Blanche, Celine or even Georgiana). So Charlotte was capable of such a thing. St John is in love with her, but because he doesn't think she'd make a suitable wife for a missionary (he's probably right, which I mean as a compliment to Rosamond), he fights his infatuation. She reciprocates his feelings, but seeing as it goes nowhere, she gets over him and marries Mr Granby, an heir to a fortune. I like to think they were very happy together. (Fun fact: When I read Jane Eyre for the very first time, Rosamond was my favourite female name.)
Dog lovers will be glad to hear that Pilot survived the fire and lives at Ferndean with Edward when Jane arrives.
What to conclude then?
If I believed Rochester has changed, I wouldn't have created this sideblog (firstly, I would not have written a long-ass piece that led to the creation of this sideblog). For sure, his womanising days are over (because they're physically impossible, not because he's married--he already cheated on one wife). Although--you don't expect me to give up on this so easily, do you--there are ways. Jane might sometimes be away while he stays at home and John is a faithful servant--he will get him girls if his master wants him to get him girls. John, like the innkeeper, is loyal, he worked for the family since Papa Rochester's time.
The other stuff--the gaslighting, the manipulation, the lying--would not vanish with his disabilities. In fact, after his injuries, Edward could have got even worse. Jane only talks about how she serves him. Nothing about what he does for her. But hey, she's happy. The not-a-bird that no net ensnared landed in a semi-habitable residence deep in the woods, caring for her husband. *shrug*
A side note: Where the fuck she met those paysannes and Bäuerinnen, I would like to know. Those words mean peasant women in French and German, respectively. But she mentions no travelling. Let's say they did travel to France and Germany--but what the fuck does she meet peasant women for? Did she go to the mainland Europe to trace Edward's illegitimate offspring?
I'm being mean again. They probably went to Switzerland, where both those languages are spoken, for Edward's health. But you'd hope she'd tell us more about it.
Would I like a different ending for her? I presented some different ideas, but since she insists on being with him so much, let her have him. He's twenty years older and if, by chance, he dies relatively early (by falling into a hole, for example) while she's in her thirties, there's still plenty of time for her to enjoy a bit of life. (As long as she is not the one to die first from the effects of Ferndean's unhealthy environment.)
What ending would I want to see for him?
Same as the canon, except without Jane's return. Alone, broken, abandoned by everyone, far from civilisation. And after a while, with his insistence on candles, coupled with his visual impairment... third time lucky, eh? It would have to be on John and Mary's day out, they don't deserve to die from smoke inhalation. He'd leave them a bit of money so that they could buy or build a small cottage where they could live together for the rest of their life.
Don't get me wrong, I do believe Edward was given a hard time by his father. Issues also come with being the second son (The Spare). But at some point, you have to become responsible for your own shit. Edward chose not to break the cycle.
As I reach the end, one last question pops into my mind.
What kind of a master asks his newly hired governess if she thinks him handsome?

A Good Year =-=-=-=-=-=-=-
1. Malena
Set in war time Sicily, a 13 year old boy is infatuated with the beautiful young war widow, Malena, who was the obsession of every man and the envy of every woman in their small Italian village. Because of her, Renato will come to learn all of life’s lessons and find himself in places he never could have imagined. Visually, it’s one long Dolce & Gabbana ad.
2. Swimming Pool
British crime novelist, played by the wonderful Charlotte Rampling, travels to her publisher’s summer house in Southern France to seek solitude in order to work on her next book. But the arrival of Julie, who claims to be the publisher’s daughter, induces complications and a subsequent murder…
3. French Kiss
Meg Ryan at her best in this semi-screwball romantic with Kevin Kline doing his best French accent. From Paris to vineyards in Provence to the French Riviera, this French Kiss is utterly charming and cheerful.
4. Purple Noon
Plein Soleil (a.k.a. Purple Noon), the original film adaption of Talented Mr. Ripley, starring French sixties heartthrob, Alain Delon in his first major role. Have you ever watched a film and felt as if every single frame was worthy of a postcard? This is one of those films. From the sun-bleached Italian scenery and style to the bronzed and beautiful actors.
5. Only You
Robert Downey Junior and Marisa Tomei make a magical (and hilarious) combination. The wardrobe in this film is to die for, as is their Italian travel itinerary. From Venice to Positano, it’s impossible not to fall in love with this movie.
6. A Bigger Splash
A modern ode to Sicily, starring the excellent Tilda Swinton, Ralph Fiennes, Dakota Johnson and Matthias Schoenaerts. Sex, murder and Italy– what else do you need in a movie?
7. Captain Corelli’s Mandolin
8. A Room with a View
Starring a baby-faced Helene Bonham Carter as well as Maggie Smith, Daniel Day Lewis and Judi Dench, A Room with a View takes you to Florence during the Belle Epoque for an eminently entertaining comedy with an intellectual approach to love.
9. Vicky Cristina Barcelona
A spicy Spanish feast for the eyes, arguably one of Woody Allen’s best works.
10. And God Created Woman
The movie that turned Brigitte Bardot into an international star. Bardot stars as Juliette, an 18-year-old orphan whose unbridled appetite for pleasure shakes up all of St. Tropez.
11. Stealing Beauty
The coming-of-age 90s movie for American girls that dreamed of falling in love in Europe. Starring Liv Tyler and Jeremy Irons.
12. Il Postino
” beauty of the film is in its quietness”, said Roger Ebert. A most essential Italian film that captures the simplicity of Italy so well.
13. A Good Year
A guilty pleasure, a slightly over-romanticised version of Provence, but A Good Year hits the spot, starring Russell Crow and Marion Cotillard. Watch with a glass of wine in hand.

Reflection: What Insights, information, or perspectives have you gained from further exploration?
There are several themes from this movie that will be explored further, which include:
Capital (social, cultural, and economic will be explored and their impacts on outcomes for some of the characters in the story)
Privilege and intersectionality (how did identities shape characters and how did this dictate their paths?)
Prejudice – there are multiple layers of prejudice in this story, that will be peeled away and explored.
How all these themes ultimately tie into social justice will be the conclusion of this section.
Part One: Capital
Before diving into the amounts of capital that each character possesses in “Dead Man Walking”, it is important to define the different types of capital one can have. Cultural capital, as defined by Bourdieu (1986), includes the preferences and behaviors which are typically used in the dominant society. He also defines it as “institutional cultural capital”, which is the “form of educational qualifications” one has (Bourdieu, 1986, pg. 242). Finally, he defines cultural capital as “objectified”, which is the ownership of cultural goods that are considered “mainstream” in that society (Paschos, 2020).
Let’s look at Matthew Poncelet under this lens of cultural capital. Matthew is from an extremely poor socioeconomic background, his mother works very hard to support four sons, but dad is ultimately no longer in the picture. As a result, they all live in a trailer in a “poor” area of town. The amount of “objectified” cultural capital that Matthew and his family possess is not comparable to what is considered “mainstream” in American society at this time (or anytime for that matter). For institutionalized cultural capital, it is already apparent that Matthew has not had an opportunity to seek any type of higher education, and perhaps he also did not finish high school, which is not confirmed but is alluded to throughout the film. As a result, Matthew does not have the “typical” educational background in north American culture that would provide him with any substantial capital. Finally, let us look at the “preferences and behaviors” which are typically used in the dominant society. Matthew is on death row for murder and rape, and the events that led up to that terrible night are not in positive correlation with the expected behaviors or preferences of north American society, BUT it should be noted that Matthew’s behaviors were considered somewhat normal to those he was associating himself with, such as Vitello (the other murderer and rapist) who unfortunately became somebody Poncelet tried to model and look up to. This will be looked at further with social capital.
Before we move to social capital, let’s look at Helen Prejean under this cultural capital lens. Helen comes from a wealthy family, as her father is an important figure. Her home is full of Victorian style furniture, and is spacious enough to accommodate her entire family and their spouses for regular dinners together. Although Helen works and lives in the projects as a nun, she frequently visits home throughout the movie and discusses her progress with Matthew as well as listens intently to her family members responses and concerns. Her mannerisms and behaviors would be considered preferable to mainstream American society. Her education includes a B.A in English and education from St. Mary’s Dominican College, as well as an M.A in religious education from Saint Paul University of Ottawa, Canada (please note this information is not disclosed in the film, but it is important to note this to gauge Helen’s cultural capital). It should be pointed out that Helen comes from a wealthy and powerful family, and chose to become a nun, which shows how caring her personality is, since her siblings did not go that route.
Before discussing Carl Vitello, who is the other assailant involved in the rape and murder case with Matthew Poncelet, I want to discuss social capital, since it is the one thing that puts Vitello at an advantage over Poncelet when it came to the trial and charges. Social capital can be seen as several resources that result in a network of relationships and recognition (Paschos, 2020). Vitello, who is likely of a similar upbringing as Poncelet, is much older than Poncelet, and as such has higher social capital because he knows more people than him. This is made apparent when Helen visits Matthew Poncelet in prison and he discusses how Vitello “escaped” the death row sentence because he knew a lawyer, a lawyer that he did not share with Poncelet and as such managed to get a life sentence during the trial instead of death row.  During this trial, Poncelet had no representation except a lawyer provided by the state (which in most cases is not a very effective attorney), which yielded him no favourable results as he ends up being sentenced to death.
This is one important difference between Matthew Poncelet and Carl Vitello. While they have very similar cultural capital, Vitello had a larger social circle which he was able to use to his advantage to get him off death row. It is also may allude to the idea that Vitello also has high economic capital (aka money) than Poncelet because he was able to afford this lawyer he knew of while Poncelet had no economic resources to draw from to help with his case. This is not confirmed in the movie, but it is very uncommon for an effective lawyer to take a “pro bono” case when representing a guilty man such as Vitello, so he would have had to come up with the funds somewhere.
Part Two: Privilege and Intersectionality
It is important to determine what intersectionality is and how it impacted the various levels of privilege of the main characters in “Dead Man Walking”.
“Intersectionality refers to the interconnected nature of a person’s multiple identities (e.g., race, or ethnicity, gender, class, sexual orientation), whose unique combination results in an accumulation of barriers (Simon, Boyd, & Subica, 2022, pg. 34). What Simon et al. admit is missing from this definition is the process that causes these identities to overlap, resulting in systems of oppression and privilege (2022).
Why is it important to know what intersectionality means in relation to Matthew Poncelet, or Carl Vitello? Simon et al. (2022) have determined that there is “…an importance of using an intersectionality lens to understand how identities interact with institutions and social systems to produce inequality” (CSWE, 2015; Murph et al., 2009; Nadan et al., 2015 as cited in Simon, Boyd, & Subica, 2022, pg. 36).
Helen makes several references to the idea that death row is a poor person’s issue. Not only in the movie, but in her book(s), and in her advocacy of human rights.
“The death penalty is a poor person’s issue. In the end, it is the poor who are selected to die in this country. You’ll never find a rich person on death row” (Kenyon, 2021).
Although Poncelet and Vitello are white, that is where their privilege ends. The combination of all of their identities (extremely poor, uneducated, inexperienced) yields unfavourable outcomes for both of them. Even though they are both guilty of the crimes they committed, Poncelet never received a fair trial as he couldn’t afford any legal representation.  Because he was too young and not educated on how the legal system works (or doesn’t) he did not realize his fate at the time (being sentenced to death).
Perhaps what Simon et al. (2022) are pointing out is that there is a theme of certain intersectionalities that produce inequalities within the legal system, and it is important that we are aware of this to alleviate them. “Accordingly, intersectionality provides a critical lens for bringing awareness and capacity to social justice efforts to expand and deepen interventions to address the systemic oppression of clients (Crenshaw & Harris, 2009, as cited in Simon, Boyd, & Subica, 2022, pg. 36).
Helen has a certain level of privilege that has allowed her to give back and advocate for those that are less fortunate. Helen grew up in a stable household with a considerable amount of wealth, was well educated, and was a devoted Catholic, all providing her with a substantial amount of capital and privilege, which she used to fight oppression and raise awareness of the plight of those less fortunate such as Matthew Poncelet in the film, and actual inmates in real life.
Part Three: Prejudice
It is shown that Matthew Poncelet possesses a significant amount of prejudice throughout the film, but it is also apparent that many others have a highly prejudiced opinion of Matthew Poncelet, which should be explored.
Prejudice can be defined as “bias which devalues people because of their perceived membership of a social group” (Abrams, 2010).
Prejudice is more likely to develop when groups have differing values, people from other groups are seen as “different”, when people perceive their identity in terms of belonging to particular groups, and when one group discriminates against other groups (Abrams, 2010, pg. 3).
One of the questions that Helen poses to Matthew while visiting in jail was “have you ever been an object of prejudice?” This is a powerful question because throughout the film Matthew has established that he is not the same as the African Americans he grew up with, he comments several times about growing up with “them”, but Helen makes him admit that he has never taken the time to get to know any of his neighbors of color. Matthew discusses how one time when he was a kid, he was throwing rocks at some of the other kids who were black, and then complained that they took his bike the following day. Sister Helen responds with “would you blame them?” Matthew responds with a quick no.
Sister Helen tries to make Matthew realize that although he had prejudiced views, he was also a victim of prejudice being somebody on death row. She asks, “what do people think about inmates on death row?” She goes on to tell him that they are seen as “monsters”, “disposable waste”, “good-for-nothings”, which is exactly what Mr. Percy referred to Matthew as when Sister Helen was leaving their home (at their abrupt demand after learning she was acting as his spiritual guide on death row).
Matthew’s developed prejudice against African Americans and Jewish people (he makes several discriminatory comments about them during an interview that was recorded), are a product of belonging and associating in certain groups with particular people as he grew up, such as Carl Vitello (and most likely others). If Matthew had other opportunities to hang around different people, to have a stable upbringing, an opportunity to get an education, would these prejudices have developed? Would the Percy’s and Delacroix look at Poncelet as a “monster” then? Because they associate Poncelet with all inmates on death row, they no longer see him as a human. Hilton Barber, the lawyer who is working with Sister Helen and trying to help Matthew, discusses the idea that “it’s easy to kill a monster but hard to kill a human being”. They spent the entire duration of the film trying to convince the State that although Matthew was guilty of horrendous crimes, he was also a human who was brought up in circumstances that would make it very difficult to have a fair shot at life and to develop the types of cultural and social capital that is considered preferable to north American society. He associated with the wrong people and modeled his behavior after Carl Vitello because that was the only option he believed he had.
Part Four: How it all ties into Social Justice
Why is “Dead Man Walking” a film on social justice? It is important to define it before we bring in the themes of capital, privilege, intersectionality, and prejudice and their impact on the film’s characters and outcomes.
From Oxford, social justice is “the fair distribution of wealth and opportunities within a society”. This applies to “Dead Man Walking” because the film clearly determines that there is an unfair distribution of opportunities within the society of the film, which is based in America.
“Dead Man Walking” and Sister Helen Prejean in particular, have determined that those who are in prison on death row have a common set of intersectionalities, cultural and social capital, and level of prejudice both within them and put against them. These commonalities amongst the inmates on death row are a result of the lack of opportunities many of these inmates have had, whether it is the opportunity towards receiving an education, associating with various groups of people, having stability growing up, having the opportunity of economic prosperity, the right of geographical mobility (you can’t move if you don’t have money), access to role models (Matthew Poncelet didn’t have a father figure, similar to other inmates), and an overall lack of experience caused by these barriers and potentially others as well.
“Dead Man Walking” is a social justice film because it brings forward the plight of the poor in north America. Those who are in vulnerable and precarious positions within the legal system are often poor, and as a result are unable to get a fair defense or prior to that, have a fair opportunity at life similar to those from higher socioeconomic backgrounds. The legal system preys on those facing oppression due to various intersecting identities including class, race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, and others. Although Matthew Poncelet was a white American all his other identities had him portrayed as a “monster” and nobody bothered to investigate how he ended up there in the first place, except for Sister Helen Prejean. This is a common and sad story that is continuing to happen in north America today.

She Fell in Love With The Majesty of Volcanoes—and Changed How Science Sees Them
Katia Krafft traveled to volcanoes around the world to unlock their mysteries, capture their beauty, and raise awareness of their risks.
— By Maya Wei-Haas | January 09, 2023
Sheathed in a shiny metallic suit, Katia Krafft's small frame is dwarfed by the crimson curtain of molten rock that bursts from the ground before her. The dramatic moment was captured in a photo taken atop Iceland's Krafla volcano in 1984, during the fiery peak's final gasps of a multi-year-long eruption. Looking at the image, one can almost feel the volcano's heat, hear its roar, and sense Krafft's heart pounding as the volcanologist does what she loves most: bearing witness to our planet's fiery fury.
"Once you see an eruption, you can't live without it because it's so grandiose, it's so strong," Krafft says in the National Geographic documentary Fire of Love now streaming on Disney+.
Krafft was a fearless pioneer in volcanology, studying the explosive peaks at a time when there were few women in the field. The moment a volcano exploded, she and her husband, Maurice Krafft, also a volcanologist, dropped everything to analyze and capture the beauty and mystery of each event. These stunning close-ups allowed geologists to dissect the intricate details of each eruption like never before. The Kraffts wrote books, made movies, and embarked on media tours to share their knowledge with people around the world, raising awareness of volcanic risks.
Tumblr media
"That was really still the infant days of volcanology," says Janine Krippner, a volcanologist based in New Zealand. For Krippner and many other women scientists worldwide, Katia, in particular, also helped spark their own desires to enter this field. "She gave me the courage to really push forward," says Krippner, who yearned to be a volcanologist since she first learned of the profession at age 13.
Explosive Entrance
Katia Krafft—Catherine Joséphine Conrad before marriage—was born in the Rhine valley of northeast France in 1942, during the height of World War II. The tumultuous human world drove both Katia and Maurice to seek comfort in nature. "We were disappointed in humanity," he once said. "Since a volcano is greater than man, we felt that was what we need—something beyond human understanding."
Tumblr media

Indeed, when the duo studied at the University of Strasbourg in the 1960s, little was known about the forces that drive our restless planet. Plate tectonics was just gaining acceptance. This foundational theory describes the dynamics of the fractured outer layer of our planet. Each tectonic plate is perpetually moving, colliding in some places and pulling apart in others, building volcanoes along their boundaries.
The Kraffts set out with little money and lots of determination to understand these mysterious geologic beasts, capturing stunning videos and imagery. In one, seen in the documentary, Katia calmly approaches a fountain of incandescent lava. Dressed in a red jacket and matching hat, she raises an arm to her face as a shield from the intense heat. Another snippet shows a lobe of gooey rock cooled just enough to form a black crust. A boot squishes the mound, igniting flames that the boot-wearer casually shakes away.
"Once you see an eruption, you can't live without it because it's so grandiose, it's so strong." — Katia Krafft
The pair initially focused their work on so-called effusive eruptions, in which lava streams from the volcano. While still dangerous, effusive eruptions are usually less deadly in comparison to their explosive relatives. But two deadly disasters led the Kraffts to turn their lenses on the devastating impacts of explosive blasts. In 1980 the eruption of Mount St. Helens in Washington killed 57 people, and in 1985, Colombia's Nevado del Ruiz unleashed a blast that triggered deadly mudflows that killed more than 20,000 people.
The Kraffts used their footage of explosive eruptions to explain the complex risks and uncertainties of these disasters. "It changed our ability to communicate volcano science," says volcanologist Rebecca Williams at the University of Hull, in England, who was a science advisor for Fire of Love.
Their videos are credited as one of the primary reasons that officials in the Philippines took the warning signs of Mount Pinatubo's eruption in 1991 seriously. Yet the Kraffts didn't live to see that eruption.
The couple died less than two weeks earlier in Japan during a monstrous eruption, which claimed 41 other lives.

A Persisting Legacy
Katia's impact on volcanology has reached far beyond her death and has inspired many young women to study our restless planet. Today, 39 percent of the 937 members of the international volcanology society IAVCEI are women. Yet inequities still persist.
"There are medals that have never been given to a woman," says Williams, an author of a recent analysis of diversity in volcanology. "They're not being given the keynotes. They're not being given the awards." And all 22 of IAVCEI’s presidents have been men.
Men also continue to outnumber women in films and images of volcanologists. So seeing Katia in the field has motivated many budding geologists. "Katia Krafft is definitely the reason why I'm doing this job," says Carla Tiraboschi, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Münster, Germany. Tiraboschi first saw Katia in a documentary when she was just six or seven years old and has been obsessed with volcanoes ever since. She now studies the processes at work deep below the fiery peaks.
Tumblr media
Many volcanologists share these sentiments, including some whose paths briefly crossed Katia's. At age 16, Marie-Claude Williamson met Katia during an evening lecture where the Kraffts were narrating one of their films. Williamson was enthralled with the footage and timidly approached Katia to ask how one becomes a volcanologist. "By pursuing a career in geology, of course!" she recalls the terse reply in French.
Williamson is now a research scientist at the Geological Survey of Canada. "It was largely the vision of the extraordinary woman I briefly encountered when I was 16 that kept me going," she says.

A Trip out West to discover the Book of Nature
Some people, in order to discover God, read books. But there is a great book: the very appearance of created things. Look above you! Look below you! Note it. Read it. God, whom you want to discover, never wrote that book with ink. Instead He set before your eyes the things that He had made. Can you ask for a louder voice than that? - St. Augustine, "City of God" Book XVI
Wendi and I are committed to go visit the national parks throughout the U.S. Last year we went to some of the most gorgeous sites out east. This year we had the occasion to go out west so we visited Mt. St. Helen, Mt. Rainier, The Pacific Coast, Crater Lake, the Columbia River Gorge and Mt. Hood (yes, in that order). The pics above show some of the most vistas from our trip (in the order of where we went).
The national parks are called America's Best Idea and in fact Ken Burns made an amazing documentary on this idea. His first episode is called "The Scripture of Nature" which very much captures the idea that St. Augustine presents above.
In our Catholic tradition we are taught that God does reveal God-self through both our sacred scriptures as well as through nature and reason; what St. Augustine would call the "great book" in the quote above. This is a consistent teaching from our faith tradition. St. Bernard De Clairvaux would write the following about Christian mysticism: "Believe me, you will find more lessons in the woods than in books. Trees and stones will teach you what you cannot learn from masters." Within the recent social tradition of our faith Pope Francis highlighted how this aspect of our tradition moves us to justice and charity by examining the contributions of St. Francis of Assisi who "shows us just how inseparable the bond is between concern for nature, justice for the poor, commitment to society, and interior peace."
In this documentary Ken Burns highlights the spiritual contributions of John Muir, the American mystic who advocated for developing the national parks and who brought President Theodore Roosevelt to recognize the importance of the conservation movement. John Muir started the Sierra Club back in 1892 to help advocate for conservation and environmental issues. There you can see a list of his mysticism including this gem which speaks to our recent experience.
Oh, these vast, calm, measureless mountain days, inciting at once to work and rest! Days in whose light everything seems equally divine, opening a thousand windows to show us God. Nevermore, however weary, should one faint by the way who gains the blessings of one mountain day; whatever his fate, long life, short life, stormy or calm, he is rich forever.
In these trips throughout the national parks we both experience the spiritual beauty of nature and we are able to praise the Creator through "the very appearance of created things". It was an experienced that spiritually and morally moved us and brought us closer together. Like St. Francis we both see and value our commitment to nature, the environment and the poor. This graced experience highlighted for us the urgent appeal that Pope Francis makes in his environmental encyclical Laudato Si.
The urgent challenge to protect our common home includes a concern to bring the whole human family together to seek a sustainable and integral development, for we know that things can change... I urgently appeal, then, for a new dialogue about how we are shaping the future of our planet. We need a conversation which includes everyone, since the environmental challenge we are undergoing, and its human roots, concern and affect us all. #13-14
