oh my godddd it’s literally so obvious that mike is supposed to be a familial figure to el, mike basically starts the “keep the door open five inches” thing in s1e2 when el goes to change in the bathroom, not to mention mike saying el will get her own room and his parents will take care of her like lmaooo ITS SO OBVIOUS.

thoughts during 1x01 (the vanishing of will byers) rewatch

the boys said they needed to roll a 13 or higher to fireball the demogorgon... this is an absolute stretch but mike and will are both associated with the number 7. together it adds to 14 so i wonder if there's something there the duffers planned

there was this very cute background detail where will just goes "why do we have to go" when karen warned mike about the time. my son loves his d&d campaigns so much

also have demogorgons ever demonstrated the ability to unlock doors anywhere else? because i found will's vanishing very odd. usually we have seen demogorgons act like primitive predators, hunting and attacking whatever they see first. but whatever/whoever took will byers to the upside down was strategic. they followed him all the way from mike's home (the tv static and the lights on mike's porch all flickering)

also we never really actually see will get captured. as in. the light just went super bright and then when it returned to normal, will was just gone. nothing gory or violent.

when the boys went to school, lucas said something like "i'm telling you, his mom's probably right" and i couldn't stop imagining lil mike wheeler pestering his mom over breakfast asking what mrs byers said about will, and then him just worrying over will as he biked to school 🥺

also. mike wheeler is obsessed with superheroes. nerd son <3 (but also maybe this has some significance to the theory of how he really only put el on a mantle because she had powers but once they went away, he realised he had confused that respect for romantic love?)

also, mike's outburst at the dinner table. one of my favourite byler scenes and will isn't even there.

joyce byers just being the best mother EVER. I LOVE MY BYERS FAMILY SO SO SO VERY MUCH

last thought but very very interesting to me, mike also said this:

"will could've cast protection last night, but he didn't, he cast fireball... my point is, he could've played it safe. but he didn't. he put himself in danger to help the party"

by now we know their d&d campaigns foreshadow real-life events. but will's friends weren't really in need of any help at that point, were they? UNLESS. UNLESS. THIS WHOLE TIME. will had already encountered vecna. and the "deal with god" he made was that vecna would leave his friends alone as long as will "sacrificed" himself and played bait.

anyway this rewatch is going to be so fun i love this show so much <3 the duffer brothers really did something

with everything happening with birthday gate right now, id like to add that in 3x01, when dustin returns home, he trys to contact the party. he gets no response and his mam says “you’ve been away a whole month, maybe they just forgot” but they didnt. we see later in the episode that they remembered and in fact surprised dustin at his house
