Rewatching ENT 4x03 and I cannot with Trip and T'Pol.
First, Trip? Mr. "Oh, my sister's dead and I don't have a home anymore"? Bitch, your parents are still alive! You think your momma doesn't want to see you? But no, you're gonna angle for a free Vulcan vacation!
And T'Pol? Ms. "Haven't spoken to my mother recently"? You're taking your human 'it's complicated' to your family home for x number of days, and expecting to have it to yourselves. You had DESIGNS, ma'am.

someone reminded me of how mad i was when trip & t'pol's baby died in ENT so.
-
Malcolm's not entirely sure what's going on, the only information he has is the hasty, "Engine's funny, need her out of there." that Trip had given him, alongside his literal child.
And it's not like Malcolm doesn't know Elizabeth, obviously he does, she's three years old and been living on the ship for all of them, but he has also never been left alone with her before.
She squirms in his arms until he puts her down and then blinks up at him with her large brown eyes.
"So," he says, for lack of anything else, "what do you do for fun?"
Elizabeth lifts one of her small hands to rub at her nose. "Chocolate."
He has a very vague memory of Trip, off hand, mentioning that chocolate has the same effect on Vulcans that alcohol has on humans. "I don't have any of that."
"Sparks." She mimes pressing two wires together.
"I don't have any of that either."
She tilts her head, unimpressed, and it's honestly a little freaky how much she can look like her mother. "What then?"
"Uh," he glances down at the tablet he had pulled out before Trip had blown in, "I need to do inventory, you wanna help?"
Elizabeth makes grabby hands at the tablet and he hands it over. From the crease in her brow, Malcolm is not entirely sure she actually understands any of it, but she eventually nods and hands it back.
"'ventory."
"In-ventory," he corrects, absently minded, thankfully she hasn't touched the screen at all, so the list from the last time he went through everything in the armory is still up.
"In-ventor-ee."
They blink at each other.
"Yeah." Malcolm eventually says. "Exactly."

There's some Star Trek in your militaristic Sci-Fi, Sir!
Finished watching the third season of Star Trek: Enterprise… Why? Yes, I understand that contextually the world came to a halt after the World Trade Center attack and the USA went into turbo-militaristic mode, as the history of audiovisual production clearly reflects.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The worst thing about the third season of ST:ENTERPRISE is not the series that it is, it is the series that is guessed, the series that one senses exists in the nooks and crannies that Berman and Braga sometimes leave to other screenwriters, less burnt out, less obsessed with finding the formula, less poisoned by their own idea of Star Trek, less fed up with themselves. Maybe I'm wrong and the spirit of hyper-patriotic revenge of the post-9/11 moment elevated the militaristic, action-packed, space-fighting plot to become the new defining Star Trek, but considering that the series was cancelled due to low ratings, I'm afraid that all the shooting, fighting and space combat didn't prove Berman and Braga right: that wasn't Star Trek.
Tumblr media
The radical shift in tone between the naive first seasons, with a well-meaning humanity taking its first faltering steps into the galactic community, with more good intentions than knowledge, to a Pequod transcript captained by the uncompromising Ahab Archer seeking divine vengeance against the formless enemy that has sullied his planet is so radical and, above all, so poorly structured narratively that there is no way to empathize with him. The Archer we knew in the first seasons, who invited all the aliens who crossed his path to eat, to visit Earth, to share knowledge, who fought any injustice he found, who got into trouble for not understanding things, who was slowly learning to trust his people, his ship and his instinct, disappears completely. All that remains is Earth's Revenge, The Mission, and nothing and no one can stop him. Torture? Physical and psychological, whichever you prefer: Every 2 chapters he has to contractually torture someone. Piracy? Of course, he would be no less than anyone else in the sector. Incredible logic gymnastics to justify absolutely everything and still try to making us believe that they are the good guys of the series? Vulcan High Command would be so proud of him!
Tumblr media
But sometimes, Star Trek slips through the cracks: Extinction, North Star, Doctor's Orders, Hatchery, The Shipment… some of the less rated episodes of the season. But the general tone is hopeless: The future is bright and shining (No, there is only fear of enemies and paranoia), Humanity will be better (No, the end justifies the means), there are Wonders worth seeing (No, we only want revenge at all costs), the promises of Star Trek, the pillars that Roddenberry established in the imagination and that created the distinctive idea of what Star Trek is above all else, barely manage to appear, drowned in a myopic, revanchist plot of space revenge, on rare occasions.
Tumblr media
I know and understand audiovisual products as products contextual to the time and circumstances in which they are created. The failure of ST:ENTERPRISE was not due to a single factor. The very high production costs, the departure from the thematic pillars of the franchise, the burnout of the showrunners, all these factors contributed to its premature cancellation at the end of the third season. By the time the signature campaign managed to get the green light for the fourth season, it was too late: promises to the fans are not enough to erase from the canon episodes where the crew of the ENTERPRISE decides to mutiny because their Captain tries to save some Xindi embryos, but not when Archer psychologically tortures the prisoners, or when he decides to carry out an act of piracy with zero guarantees against a ship of civilians totally unrelated to the conflict, of a race with which he HAS JUST MADE THE FIRST CONTACT.
All of those moments will remain in the Star Trek canon, unfortunately.
Tumblr media
Also, we will have this one too.

Help a useless nerd find their soul mug
YES I know it’s nerdy and stupid (iykyk) but I also know I have been driving myself BONKERS trying to find Thermos Nissan’s JMJ 350 (or 180), or their Double Espresso Mug.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(ID in alt text)
It keeps me up at night. I have spent too long trying to find places that sell them, even eBay is devoid. A similar looking mug would also ease my pain. Because they’re from the 80’s and 90’s, they have become too rare, or they’re being hoarded by the most twisted and cruel fan alive.
