Just a lil much-needed queer youth joy - we need to talk about these students and allies in Hawai'i!
Students from Campbell- Kapolei Complex Schools used funding from one of our 50 States 50 Grants to give SO much support to their queer communities.
They bolstered their GSA clubs, held community based education events like a Halloween party and craft day, and even got to attend Honolulu Pride - where Hawai'i-raised Bretman Rock showed up for a surprise visit and marched alongside the students to honor them and their work, having attended the same schools themself growing up!
So proud of these students for recognizing what they need in their own communities.
And lucky for y'all...apps are open for the 3rd season of 50 States, 50 Grants right now through April 1, 2024 - if you're a high schooler or middle schooler in the US/DC/territories and have an idea for how you'd use the funds at your own school, don't miss out on applying: 50states50grants.org

Minnesota governor Tim Walz continues to make big moves towards improving lives of Minnesotans
Minnesota state jobs no longer require a college degree! Folks who couldn't afford to go to college have a whole new range of job opportunities.
Yeah, the weather sucks, but I love being a Minnesotan.

That's One Giant Beaver!
Giant beavers as big as bears (6 to 9 feet long, weighing 200-500 pounds) ranged the Mississippi River flats over 15,000 years ago. Picture here, in 1947, is Louis H. Powell, director of the Science Museum of St. Paul, comparing a giant beaver skull dug up on the Mississippi flats, near Hidden Falls park, with the skull of a large modern beaver.
In 2021, the Science Museum of Minnesota nominated a Giant Beaver specimen to be the official state fossil. You can read the campaign online. A bill was introduced in 2022.
Photos from the Minneapolis Newspaper Photograph Collection in the Hennepin County Library Digital Collections. The 1947 newspaper article which featured these photographs incorrectly stated that the fossil was dug up below the Lake Street Bridge, but Hidden Falls Park is in St. Paul.

They say
Tumblr media
We all know that there are things that come between us and God.
Whether it’s an addiction. Or a toxic relationship. Or our politics.
Something as retro as one of the seven deadlies. Or something subtle as our own anger or negativity.
When something comes between us and God. The hardest part isn’t always dealing with whatever has come between us and God.
Sometimes the hardest part is dealing with other people. And their perception of us.
That is, whatever we were doing that got us off track? People get used to us being someone who does that. So much so, that’s how they define us. To them, that’s who we are.
“You thought he wasn’t going to do that? Oh, that’s just him.”
“She always says stuff like that. That’s why I quit following her.”
Which can be a huge problem when we finally decide to deal with whatever has come between us and God.
You would think that people would welcome the change. After all, when something comes between us and God, you and I aren’t the only ones that get hit by the fallout from that. It impacts everyone around us. At a minimum.
Given that, you’d think that their response would be something like, “that’s great, how can I help?” Or at least, “it’s about time.”
Instead, we get pushback. It’s almost like people are saying to us, “That’s your box. Don’t you dare try to crawl out of it. That’s who you are.”
Which is why today’s first reading (about the conversion of St. Paul) is so important.
Because this is exactly what happens to St. Paul.
God tells Ananias to go to Saul (Paul’s name before his conversion) and heal him. Ananias is a believer. He’s a good guy. But he still pushes back,
“Lord, I have heard from many sources about this man, what evil things he has done…”
And God’s response? God doesn’t waste time with what “they say.”
Because that’s what Ananias is throwing at God. A fancy version of “they say.”
There are a lot of reasons why God doesn’t waste time with what “they say.” First, God is, well, God. God already knows all of it. None of the evil things that have been told to Ananias thirdhand are news to God.
But more importantly, that’s not how God sees Saul. God doesn’t see Saul as the subject of rumors. As someone rightly on the receiving end of tales that grow worse with the telling.
As God tells Ananias, “this man is a chosen instrument of mine.”
Translation, God doesn’t just put up with Saul. God chooses Saul. Because God sees who he really is.
God sees the Paul that He made him to be. Because God has a plan for his life.
And all of that, because Saul took his first stumbling step towards God. His first step away from everything that he had put between himself and God. His first step towards Home.
It’s not unusual. This is just who God is. And how overjoyed God is, when we take our first stumbling step towards Him.
When God sees us taking that first stumbling step towards Him, towards becoming who He made us to be, God rejoices. And claims us as His own.
God turns to the angels and says, “See that? You know who that is? This woman is a chosen instrument of mine. This man is a chosen instrument of mine.”
It happens every time. When we take our first step away from everything that we’ve put between ourselves and God.
It happens every time. When we take our first step towards Home.
Because God doesn’t waste time with what “they say.”

Hi, not a bible person myself but I was watching a video and I was curious about something in it and figured I would ask you. It’s a video where a man is illegally arrested for having a sign with what seems to be a pretty controversial message outside of a church as the congregation is all showing up.
I’ve only read the bible once when I was young and my bible study has been limited to a week of barely paying attention at summer camp so I have what I would generously call almost zero context for what this guy was trying to say.
The sign said “The apostle Paul taught the opposite of what Jesus taught.” I know who Paul was but don’t really remember what his teachings were and how they differed so much, and why everyone got so worked up (beyond it seeming like kind of a duck move and the general rivalry between different views of Christianity)
Hi there,
I am not qualified to go into depth, but basically this person is saying that Paul undid all the work of Jesus.
This is problematic in two ways
It implies Jesus made a mistake. Jesus gave Paul the keys to the kingdom and by saying Paul (who was hand picked by Jesus) was wrong in how he lead the early Church…you can see why people get upset.
It implies that Jesus lied. (Matthew 5:15) Jesus said he would not undo Jewish laws but to “fulfill them.” And Paul said that Gentiles would not be required to adhere to Jewish rules. This is the quote many people use when refuting that Jesus would have loved everyone despite xyz.
Obviously, this man should not have been arrested.
tl;dr
Jesus picked Paul to be the leader of Christianity. Some people think Paul did a bad job leading. Some people think that belief in Paul doing a bad job is heresy.
