hi! i'd personally love to read your volume 2 theories (if you have any) regarding byler

Ok, this is different to my last Byler post on S4 which was speculation and headcanon, whereas this post is more of an objective theory post like my usual ones. But before I continue, I will be discussing events from S4 so if you haven't watched, I've put a warning below.

ST4 SPOILER WARNING

Secondly, there's a possibility one of them being put in a Vecna trance. I originally thought the rainbow ship was in Will's trance but it appeared in S4 already, so I don't think that's the case. Still, if they come back to Hawkins, one of them is probably going to be targeted. The posters include everyone walking towards a portal shaped like Vecna's eye which to me foreshadows that all paths lead to Vecna. I believe at least one person in each plot is going to get Vecna'd and whilst it could be Mike or Johnathan, let's be realistic; the most traumatized person in that group is Will.

Firstly, they're going to have to address Will's painting for Mike. In case someone reading this somehow isn't convinced it's for Mike, why else would Will bring it to the airport? Eleven explicitly says the painting could be for someone he has a crush on, so by revealing this painting, I don't think Will could pretend it's a platonic thing. In volume 2, Will and Mike will probably have a heart to heart in which Will reveals that the painting was of Mike, by extension revealing his romantic feelings for Mike. I feel like Mike probably has worked things out by that point but who knows. He seems pretty oblivious sometimes.

The painting may possibly be of Will and Mike meeting on the swing sets, as pointed out by @hnleleven. For those of you who don't remember, in S2 Mike explains how him and Will met on the swing sets and became friends, saying it's the best thing he ever did. This obviously meant a lot to Will so it makes sense he's painting it if he is.

If Will is in a trance, it'll probably revolve around his sexuality as that is the central focus for his character this season. It could include him first meeting Mike, warped to make Mike a homophobe, or maybe Lonnie. Either way, in order to break Will out of the trance, they'll have to play him music. Firstly, it could be Should I Stay or Should I Go as a throwback to S1. This is probably the most likely scenario as it works as fan service as well. If this is the case, I'll admit it's probably a family member who's going to play the music and not Mike as that song more relates to his familial bonds. However, it could also be Boys Don't Cry from his poster or maybe even a mixtape made by Mike. In these scenarios, it would probably be Mike.

If Will is in a trance, this would be a great link to his confession to Mike. They'd realize what he has going on so Mike would check on him like he always does to talk it out. Will would mention the painting and then tell Mike he is gay. I don't think he'd have to say explicitly that he likes Mike as Mike would probably realize it from the painting (I hope they do because some viewers are very oblivious) and this would lead to Mike either reciprocating Will's feelings or turning him down.

If it's reciprocated, I think that they'd have to somehow work this out around Eleven. Maybe there is a mature break up where in their time apart they realize they should be separate from each other. On the other hand, Mike might cheat on Eleven with Will and then end the relationship that way. As much as I like Byler, I really hope they don't make him cheat. Whilst it could be dramatic, I would feel really bad for Eleven which would kind of dampen the scene for me.

If it's not reciprocated, then Mike would probably have to say that he doesn't like Will like that but he'd accept him and stay friends. Then he'll probably use that as inspiration to tell Eleven how he feels. They'd have to be careful about how they handle this if they don't want it to come of as 'sad gay Will'. Whilst I think this is better than nothing, I really hope they are reciprocated. It would be a missed opportunity and could damage their friendship (hopefully not because exes are pretty civil in this show but still) and this is just my pessimistic response.

Hope this answer helped! Again, my pessimistic bit at the end is not me saying what will happen, it's just my thoughts on how they'd handle it if they decide to not make it reciprocated. I think they could and should so please stay optimistic! I never want to make anyone less hopeful or kill the vibe, I'm just throwing out different possibilities to try and be as comprehensive as possible.

Eleven's Season 4 Arc

The more I think about Eleven's season 4 arc the more I think it's going to be about her learning to accept failure and realise her worth is not defined by her ability to save the day.

Foreshadowing

In season 4, episode 1's D&D game, Dustin rolls an eleven against Vecna and it's not enough to beat him. In the end it is Erica's nat20 that wins the fight.

Much like Will's failed roll against the demogorgon in season 1 episode 1, I believe this is foreshadowing the events of the season. Specifically, I think this foreshadows that Eleven will be unable to beat Vecna on her own.

Vecna is unlike any of the monsters they've previously faced and they'll need new tactics to beat him. Hawkins can't keep relying on Eleven's powers to solve everything.

Eleven's battle against expectations

The constant pressure on Eleven to save the day is emphasised throughout the season with frequent references to "this girl we knew who had superpowers" and how much "easier" it was (though of course it was only "easier" for everyone else, not for Eleven who was constantly pushed to her limits in order to save everyone)

And Eleven herself has clearly internalised this idea that it's her job to save everyone and that her powers define her worth.

Her argument with Mike followed by her letter saying she's gone to "become a superhero again" implies she thinks she needs to regain her powers in order to win back or be deserving of Mike's love.

Of course, it's clear from previous seasons that this isn't the case at all. In season 1 Mike took Eleven in without even knowing about her powers. Between the events of season 1 and 2 Mike tried contacting Eleven every day even though there were no supernatural threats to tackle. In season 3 Mike specifically calls out the rest of the characters for treating Eleven "like a machine" and putting her at risk in order to stop the Mindflayer.

Eleven's relationship with Mike

The big point of tension between them this season is that Mike (for unexplained reasons) can't seem to tell Eleven he loves her to her face, even though he already said it when he didn't know she was listening.

Without knowing his exact reasons, it's hard to know exactly how this will play into Eleven's arc. However, now she has her powers back, if Mike does finally tell her he loves her to her face it risks reinforcing Eleven's belief that he only loves her as a superhero.

I think it's unlikely that they would make Eleven lose her powers again after a whole season of her delving into her subconscious to get them back. So with this in mind, it's possible Mike will say he loves her only after Eleven has fought Vecna and failed.

This would go some way to showing Eleven that Mike's feelings for her aren't conditional on her being a "superhero" (although I don't think it's a perfect solution - they would definitely need to explicitly discuss it as well)

There may even be a situation mirroring season 1 where Eleven feels she has to sacrifice herself in order to save everyone and Mike explicitly tells her that beating Vecna is not worth losing her.

Eleven's Past

In Eleven's flashbacks we saw her struggling to master her powers and getting frustrated. When she couldn't guide the coins where she wanted them to go she refused to accept failure. Instead she kept on stubbornly trying the same thing over and over.

In season 1 and again in season 4, flashbacks showed Eleven struggling to reconcile her love for her "Papa" with the things he was asking of her. She didn't want to hurt anyone but she felt a pressure to meet the expectations placed on her by Brenner and by her environment.

One also placed expectations on Eleven by suggesting she is special and more powerful than the other children, asking her to join him and ultimately choosing her as the one person to keep alive when escaping the lab.

Her whole life, Eleven has been told she is special because of her powers and her whole life she has been used by others because of them.

Brenner uses her for his experiments. One uses her to escape. Kali uses her for revenge. And in many ways the Hawkins gang have used her too.

Ultimately, Eleven needs to stop tying her sense of self-worth to what she can do for other people and start thinking about what she wants and needs. And the first step towards doing that is to see that she still has value when she doesn't succeed.

i don’t think this has any merit but i’m just wondering if the upside down being stuck in 1983 has to do with it. it’s the time their romance was swelling and it seems like that pining and yearning is happening again - so i wonder if it’s either some kind of manipulation OR somehow this part of the upside down is bleeding into the real world? i’m not sure. i don’t think it’s anything but i’d like an explanation as to why they’re pushing stancy again

OK I THINK ITS A RLY COOL (I MEAN NOT COOL BUT) THEORY I don't think it will happen in canon but the idea of will becoming a villan also makes a ton of sense bcs vecna was like oh I wanna build the perfect world and he tried to get el to build it with him but she was like fuck off and banished him 2 the upside down BUT as you can see with vecnas family home being the upside down, he can kind of manipulate it to be what he likes BUT maybe he needs help (why he was trying 2 recruit el before) and MAYB vecna could sort of sense wills powers forming or his potential for powers forming in season one, which is why he stalked him amd kidnapped him, trying to absorb his power. It wld also explain why the world froze in the time that will went missing bcs vecna wanted to make his own world out of the world they already had, he can just make a small scale copy of one town and start to build his own world in the upside down, and then after absorbing wills power could spread back out into the real world (another theory i have was vecna wanted to bring will into the upside down to truly awaken his powers, not absorb them but make them stronger so he could use will later) BUT will gets away blah blah, but will still has a very strong connection with the upside down (which may have been intentional on vecnas part!!).

Flash forward to season 4, vecnas doing his thing cursing ppl whtever, and we know vecna preys on those with traumatic memories (WHICH WILL HAS WAYYY TOO MANY OF!!) and maybe when will gets vecna'd, vecna doesn't try to kill him but instead tries to talk to him, convince him to look at his life in a different way (the same type eof speech he gave el when he was trying to get her 2 joi him). He might reveal to will that he is capable of using powers like el's and that together they can make a better world with no more suffering in the boxes society puts them into and yk what I feel like that type of speech might hit will harder than it hit el (ESP IF BEFORE WILL GETS VECNA'D, MAYBE HE OVERHEARS MIKE AND EL REUNITING AND IS LIKE WELL SHIT BCS HE THOUGHT HE HAD A CHANCE THERE). When vecna gave his speech to el she was just a kid, she didn't know about the world, she didn't really have things or people she cared abt just a sense of good and bad within her, but otherwise that's it. Meanwhile Will keeps getting beaten down over and over since he was a kid, lonnies abuse, bullying all through his life by everyone, getting taken into the upside down, not being able to escape the horror of the upside down bcs it keeps attaching itself to him (possession, him feeling whenever it's near), and now when he's trying to be happy again everyone around him is in danger AND his best friend/crush (WHO HE JUST GOT BACK and probably thought there might b smth there) is probably going 2 ignore him again now that he's reunited with el.

AND if you think about it, he's never truly opened up abt this shit 2 anyone his entire life. Whenever somebody asks him if he's okay or if somethings wrong he always lies and says it is WHEN ITS NOT. He has all those memories and feelings and thoughts roiling inside of him with nowhere to go and I think joining vecna would be like a release for him.

Vecna reinforces all these thoughts, like yes the world is an awful, awful place, but you and me, with our combined powers can fix it, make it however we want.

And I think will, in pain from reliving the traumatic memories as vecna makes them appear, as well as having his judgement of the real world temporarily clouded by vecna, would join forces with him.

A lot of people here are talking about mike dying this season by sacrificing himself! do you think is true?

He could almost die…but him actually getting killed? Nah. Mike is finding himself this season, as Finn said, so I don’t think that means his story just ends. Killing Mike off would completely throw the balance for every character on the show, and I think that would be a little bit too much.

To be honest, I don’t think anyone from the party (Will, Mike, Lucas, Dustin, Max and El) is going to die, not in season 4 at least. If someone does die my bed is Murray or Eddie, tbh. Or Steve.

rip small town boy, you will be missed. but if mike didn’t run away to cali, bc this looks very planned, the parent intervention thing back in hawkins must take place once things in cali go south. like after el is taken and they’re on the run. bc why else would karen and ted be there to question max, lucas, and dustin. the cali gang is probably MIA at that point and joyce and murray on are their way to find their boyfriend in russia.

I think it was pretty obvious before but that shot of someone in the desert with the explosion is clearly el!

shaved head + normal clothes and she was shooting this scene with noah so I wonder how long she’s actually back inside the lab before either she escapes again or the cali gang rescues her. obviously long enough for them to shave her head :( she can’t catch a break huh?

I’ve seen a lot of people wondering if mike and will get any alone time (also can we talk about how hard they’re pushing the whole “third wheeling” thing?? like something has to be up with that). but I’m assuming that’s not one of el’s friends. millie said el’s really going through it at school, so this is probably right before she gets a drink dumped on her by one the mean girls and that’s why her dress is stained in later shots. and some byler crumbs…mayphaps??

I’m so excited for them to be the comic relief this season. look at them!! I love them!! give jonathan a friend and let them smoke weed!!

lastly, I really hope there’s at least one shot of el and will shaking together. they’re so cute !! they’re siblings !! they’re twins !!

this is just me thinking out loud but i’ll put it under a cut bc i know a lot of fans are worried about who will die this season so

the theories i see the most revolve around eddie and/or steve dying and all i can think of is what the hell what if they’re both killed off and dustin is left with no Cool Older Brother ™️ figure in his life at all and that makes me SO upset

Missed this fandom and this tumblrrrr. Guess this'll be my surprise-i'm-still-alive post!

Ok so for the second volume, I wasn't surprised that Eddie died since the duffers seem to always kill the new characters lol. STILL HURT THO. I imagine Billy would've gotten his drugs from Eddie lmao. I'd kill to see them interact.

As for Max? Well. At least she's not dead? I've heard some ppl say it would've been better if they just killed her off, and the duffers are just scared to kill a main character. And maybe they are scared lol. I'm just trying to figure out what her role in the next season's going to be. I'm sure she's going to wake up at some point because idk why else they would've kept her. will she be blind? Is she going to remember anything? But she remembered lucas right after she came down, so idek.

Oooo wait. imagine if Vecna uses her as a vessel next season. Possesses her or something. Like brother like sister lol. That would be cool to see. But watch them just revive her at the very end of the season lol.

Overall, I actually didn’t hate this season! Season 3 still has a close place in my heart though. But that might just be because of the amount of Billy content lol. And I wish they’d stop killing off every new character. But I mean, Robin has made it out alive so far, so at least we have her.

Guess we’ll just have to wait 20 years for the next season.
