ok i know making the samulet randomly have godseeking powers was just like a hamfisted way to squeeze it into the plot but like. the passing of the samulet as a passing of faith. faith in god faith in your father faith in the man raising you faith in a higher power faith in someone who’s infallible and trustworthy above all else like. it’s from bobby. originally it was from bobby given to sam to give to john. emotional father figure trying to give comfort and love while reaffirming that as far as things go the child still must pay homage to his blood father the father who’s raising him. but sam doesn’t give the samulet to john because john isn’t raising him. he isn’t there. his god is absent so sam deifies someone else. he gives it to dean who IS there who IS trying to raise him who he looks up to only in the way a lonely kid who’s whole world is just the older sibling tasked with raising him can. and dean wears that with pride he welcomes that responsibility even if at times it crushes him. until 5x02. and then dean has to pass the samulet on to cas. and tho he doesn’t deify him in any kind of father-like way it’s still an ascension to the pedestal, to someone who’s methods are flawed but who’s intentions are beyond reproach! not someone who raised you but someone who raised you from the dead. but cas is just another son trying desperately to find a father figure who will stick around and take responsibility! and of course that doesn’t work. god abandoned them as non-chosen fathers are wont to do on this show. and of course dean couldn’t be this for sam either. he was only a child then and even now after s4 the strain of the unequal child-parent dynamic of their relationship is threatening to pull them apart. and with dean and cas the only way to come back from his emotional fall from grace in s6 is to literally be killed and reborn and welcomed back because despite any perceived transgressions on dean’s end he’d rather live life with a fallible flawed cas than no cas at all. like these relationships are all built up to precarious highs only to come crumbling down and it’s in the aftermath where they can pick up the pieces to something resembling even footing. anyways the passing of the samulet as the passing of faith from the assigned father figure to a new deity but only in that it necessitates a deconstruction of that new faith and a reconstruction of the relationship into one without pedestals and deification, only true balanced acceptance. because all deifying someone you love does is doom the relationship.
