The Expendables has always been a franchise based on the concept of assembling the avengers but with 80s action film meatheads. If--God forbid--they reboot the series in 30 years, it'll be much easier for them because the cast of the Fast and the Furious already exists. The thing is that we're 13 years on from the release of the first movie and the series' cast of tired action stars willing to give it one last shot is on its fourth attempt at a final mission. Also they replace the A in expendables with a 4 this time, joining films like Se7en and Taken 3.

It goes without saying but I have to stress that this film is atrocious. The writing is bad. The acting is bad. The directing is bad. You should not see this. The CGI is on par with the early sharknado films. If I hadn't gotten my ticket for free I would've been miserable. At one point Jason Statham fires a gun that was clearly locked open on empty already.

Most 4th installments into any film franchise suffer from this, but Expend4bles runs the "Look at these action heroes" premise into the ground. Statham, Stallone, and Lundgren almost look bored the whole time, Megan Fox gives the second worst performance of her career (slotting in right under the MGK movie she was in for some reason) and though I hope it was just the script and poor direction, I'm starting to have my doubts. The only person who seemed engaged the entire time was 50 Cent, who is in this for some reason, and he just seemed happy to be there.

It's a remarkably awful, lazy film, and nothing seems more emblematic of this than when Jason Statham blows up a helicopter full of presumably innocent US airmen and nobody mentions this fact after the matter. This is probably the worst film I've seen in theaters all year, and I saw Fast X.
