Spiders and Wallabies and Leeches, Oh my! (Week 3)

From the massive spiders to the venomous snakes, people can’t stop talking about all the creatures of Australia. To be honest, as much as I don’t like being around spiders, I’ve been itching to see some wild species here that I won’t be able to find anywhere else in the world. Though, I wasn’t exactly itching to see them in my Airbnb. My hostel mates and I had just arrived to our new home for the next 4 days in the Gold Coast when a giant brown Huntsman spider decided to show us around what was apparently its humble abode. As much as we wanted to see a big spider, we didn’t want to live with it, so a quick cup-and-paper-slide maneuver moved it outside. I guess the large spiders of Australia are itching to see some Americans as much as we are itching to see them!

The next two days at the Gold Coast, the Miami of Australia (there is quite literally an area called Miami Beach), were full of more beaches and nightlife. When I first stepped foot on Burleigh Heads Beach I felt like I was on another planet. The shore went on for miles and curved around with the city skyline in the distance. The water was so shallow and the wave current pulled at us like a horse at a carriage. We felt like we’d wandered onto a planet from Star Wars. Unfortunately, the beach we were at didn’t have the best conditions for surfing so we left that endeavor for another time and just let the beauty sink in. The next day at Rainbow Bay Beach proved similar with just as incredible views and even a rainbow to satisfy the name.

Our final day at the Gold Coast warranted a trip to the nearby Springbrook National Park. It being my first time in an Australian rainforest, I was determined to see a koala munching on some leaves, but my attempts at manifestation came to no avail. Instead, on our way out of the park, two hopping wallabies (which we first thought were baby kangaroos) chose to make my day. Just moments earlier we had bumped into a family that told us kangaroos are as common in Australia as deers are in the US - a fact I could not believe until 5 minutes later when I thought I saw my first kangaroo.

Another guest appearance on the hiking trip was the leech! And by “the leech!” I mean the formidable, constant flow of tiny leeches that plagued us from the ground, water, and air. I managed to evade them all, but my mates were not so fortunate and had a lot of battles with the relentless blood-sucking monsters. I left the Gold Coast content with the fact that I had come face-to-face with the largest spider I’d ever seen as well as the fact that the largest spider I had ever seen was thousands of miles away from Coogee beach.

A few days later I finally saw my first koala and kangaroo at the Sydney WILD LIFE zoo followed by the SEA LIFE aquarium. I was very excited by all the marsupials, and my personal favorite, the Tasmanian Devils. The creatures of Australia are truly one-of-a-kind and I can't wait to see more in the wild!

"Bus Drivers Carry Fight To Ottawa," Windsor Star. December 5, 1942. Page 5 & 8. ----- 16 Laid Off. Many More Will Be Because of 50-Mile Limit on Each Trip ---- Incensed over what the term a direct attempt to destroy the bus transportation business between 40 and 45 employees of the Canadian and Toronto Greyhound Bus Lines facing loss of employment as a result of government transit control order, planned today to appeal to the government for removal of arbitrary restrictions.

DRIVERS LAID OFF Sixteen by drivers employed by the Greyhound company were laid off yesterday, following a meeting attended by 75 employes at which Manferd Burleigh, general manager of the bus company here, announced that government restriction had forced curtailment of operation.

Within the next few days the number of men laid off is expected to be increased to from 40 to 45 employees.

Confirmation of the lay-off was given The Star today by S. L. Springsteen, KC president of the Canadian and Toronto Greyhound Bus Lines. Mr. Springsteen stated that he and other officers of the company had been in Toronto this week to discuss the situation affecting bus transportation with Norman D. Wilson of Toronto, Ontario Regional Trans. Controller.

NOT SATISFACTORY Mr. Springsteen, declined to discuss details of the discussions carried on in Toronto, but it was apparent that insofar as the bus companies were concerned, the conferences had not been satisfactory.

Employes said today that immediate discontinuation of service between London, Ont, and Toronto had been ordered by the transit controller.

At the same time, an exemption from the 50-mile restriction on buses operating between Windsor and London, Ont., permitting trips of 70 miles,was removed by order of the transit controller yesterday. As a result, the bus companies were returned to a limit of 50 miles on a trip.

A. E. Cook, bus driver here and a committee member of the Western Ontario Bus Employes Association, declared that the transit controllers order was "a deliberate attempt to destroy the bus transportation business."

SEES DEFINITE WASTE He based his remarks on the fact that the 50-mile limit was an arbitrary figure established without consideration for the convenience of bus passengers. He said it did not save any gasoline or rubber but caused a definite waste.

Supporting his latter statement, he declared that passengers were at off buses at the completion of the 30-mile limit allowed by the controller and were picked up by private automobiles which had to travel from the centre to where the passengers were let off and then turned about and followed the empty bus into the cry carrying the passengers who were denied passage on the bus.

It was explained that passengers en route to Chatham, including many soldiers, were let off at the end of 50 miles from Windsor, at a point known as Drake Road. Soldiers then had to either hitch hike into Chatham or walk, while the bus proceeded empty into Chatham.

G. Morand, a driver for many years, normally employed on long runs, and he had taken shorter runs at less money, because he wouldn't insult his normal long-run passengers by putting them off the bus at the end of 50 miles.

He explained that the Toronto and Buffalo runs were cancelled forthwith and without warning yesterday. The two Buffalo runs affected six men,he said, and the three Toronto runs affected nine men.

Many American passengers took advantage of the Detroit to Buffalo in because it offered a shorter route south of Lake Erie in the United States. Now under the transit order, persons served by the Buffalo run are forced to travel via the United States, he explained. OFFER REFUSED LH. Mindon, despatcher, said the bus companies had offered to the gasoline and tires from the United States on the Buffalo and Toronto runs but the offer had been reused. The offer had been made to provide service for American travelers.

He said it as apparent consequently that the Transit Controller was not concerned with providing service.

Insofar as the London, Ont, run was concerned, the bus company was told by the Transit Controller that the run must be maintained However,Mr. McIndoe said, under the 50-mile restriction, this is strictly an inconvenience to the public and a waste of gasoline."

NO CO-OPERATION Mr. McIndoe said that George S. Gray, Dominion Transit Controller, would not give any objective of the savings in gasoline and rubber sought by the imposition of the 50-mile restriction. Had the Transit Controller told the bus companies what their objective was, he contended, the companies as a result of their experience, would have been able to work out a satisfactory service to the public.

Movie Synopsis: The Eternals are a race of immortal beings with superhuman powers who have secretly lived on Earth for thousands of years. Although they have never intervened in the fate of the population, now a threat hangs over humanity. 

Review 2.8 stars

Overwhelming and yet underwhelming. Eternals' storyline and character development would've been great if turned into a Marvel series. As an origin story movie, it feels rushed and predictable. In the span of two and a half hours the movie tries to summarize years and years of the Eternals life on Earth, their mission from the beginning to the present, it introduces and then reintroduces characters left and right alongside telling who they were and who they currently are, what they are battling, romantic stories, backstabs, and whatnot. The cinematography is beautiful! It truly is a visual work of art. From the costumes to the shots. The CGI is truly one of Marvel's best works. However, it gets lost in the world wind of the plot.

Lieutenant James Reese Europe (February 22, 1881 – May 9, 1919), known as Jim Europe, was an American ragtime and early jazz bandleader, arranger, and composer. He was the leading figure in the African American music scene of New York City. Eubie Blake called him the “Martin Luther King of music”.

He organized the Clef Club, a society for African Americans in the music industry. In 1912, the club made history when it played a concert at Carnegie Hall for the benefit of the Colored Music Settlement School. The Clef Club Orchestra, while not a jazz band, was the first band to play proto-jazz at Carnegie Hall. It is difficult to overstate the importance of that event in the history of jazz in the US. The Clef Club’s performances played music written solely by African American composers, including Harry T. Burleigh and Samuel Coleridge-Taylor. His orchestra included Will Marion Cook, who had not been in Carnegie Hall since his performance as a solo violinist. Cook was the first African American composer to launch full musical productions, fully scored with a cast and story every bit as classical as any Victor Herbert operetta.

He was known for his outspoken personality and unwillingness to bend to musical conventions, particularly in his insistence on playing his style of music.

During WWI, he obtained a commission in the New York Army National Guard, where he fought as a lieutenant with the 369th Infantry Regiment (the “Harlem Hellfighters”) when it was assigned to the French Army. He went on to direct the regimental band to great acclaim. In February and March 1918, he and his military band traveled over 2,000 miles in France, performing for British, French, and American military audiences as well as French civilians. Europe’s “Hellfighters” made their first recordings in France for the Pathé brothers. The first concert included a French march, and the Stars and Stripes Forever as well as syncopated numbers such as “The Memphis Blues”, which, according to a description of the concert by band member Noble Sissle “... started ragtimitis in France”. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

Fred C. VanNess, Jr., Tenor from The Metropolitan Opera’s X: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF MALCOLM X

An avid concert performer, tenor Fred C. VanNess, Jr. will perform two arias from OMAR by Rhiannon Giddens and Michael Abels and two spirituals by Harry T. Burleigh as he talks through his journey from a small town in Louisiana to fulfilling his dream of performing on the Met stage. A Q&A follows the performance. VanNess earned a Graduate Performance Diploma from the Longy School of Music of Bard College and a Master of Arts in Music Performance from Louisiana State University. He won the first place prize in the North Shore Star singing competition presented by the North Shore Music Theatre and the Beverly Rotary Club. He is also a recipient of the Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana Career Grant. A native of Kinder, Louisiana, VanNess currently resides in the Boston area.

Eternals is a 2021 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics series of the same name. Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it is the 26th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Le film Les Déguns 2 est sorti le mercredi 2 septembre 2023. Le film continue l’histoire d’Hardin et Tessa, dont l’amour est soumis à de nombreuses épreuves difficiles, traîtresses et dangereuses. Ces deux amoureux auront-ils une fin heureuse ? En attendant de savoir si le film a été acclamé par les fans, il y a de bonnes nouvelles : Les Déguns 2 va sortir ! Cela a été confirmé le 3 septembre 2023 par les deux stars de la série dans une vidéo postée sur le profil Instagram officiel d’Les Déguns 2. Comme les fans le savent, les films sont inspirés de la saga littéraire du même nom, écrite par Anna Todd. La série Les Déguns 2 est composé de 4 livres.

L’intrigue du film Les Déguns 2 L’amour d’Hardin et Tessa est encore une fois mis à l’épreuve. Ces deux adolescents vont devoir affronter leur passé. Tessa rencontre son père après des années et décide de le prendre en charge après avoir découvert qu’il était devenu sans abri. Hardin accepte de l’héberger mais ne fait pas confiance à cet homme, convaincu qu’il cache une partie de la vérité. Mais ce n’est pas le seul obstacle. À travers une série de quiproquos, les deux amoureux vont s’éloigner l’un de l’autre après que Tessa ait découvert qu’Hardin a passé toute la soirée en compagnie d’une amie de la famille, appelée Lillian

Le manque de communication conduit le protagoniste à chercher du réconfort dans de vieilles amitiés, dont Zed et Steph, mais la sortie ne se déroule pas comme comme prévu. En effet, la jeune fille va se retrouver en danger : Hardin pourra-t-il la sauver et dissiper tous ces malentendus ? Concernant l’intrigue du film, Castille Landon, le réalisateur d’Les Déguns 2 nous assure qu’il sera fidèle au roman du même nom.

Le casting du film Les Déguns 2 : qui sera là ? Nous verrons probablement le retour de deux personnages principaux : Héro Fiennes-Tiffin et Josephine Langford, comme Hardin et Tessa, Les Déguns 2ivement. Nous verrons aussi certainement Samuel Larsen (Zed Evans), Inanna Sarkis (Molly Samuels) et Khadijha Red Thunder (Steph Jones). Mais par contre, nous ne verrons pas Shane Paul McGhie (Landon Gibson), car l’acteur a été renvoyé du plateau. Dylan Sprouse, dont le rôle est Trevor ne revient pas non plus.

Mais il y a aussi une nouvelle de dernière minute : d’autres acteurs ne reviendront pas dans le troisième film, d’où la nécessité d’un renouvellement. Déjà dans Les Déguns 2 2, on se rend compte que le père d’Hardin n’est plus joué par Peter Gallagher (Andy Cohen pourquoi es-tu parti ?) mais par Rob Estes et que la mère de Landon n’est plus jouée par Jennifer Beals mais par Karimah Westbrook. Nous verrons également beaucoup de changements dans Les Déguns 2. En commençant par Candice King et Charlie Weber : les deux acteurs ne seront plus Kim et Christian Vance.

L’actrice que nous avons appris à aimer dans The Vampire Diaries comme Caroline est enceinte de son deuxième enfant ! Sa grossesse l’empêche donc de retourner sur le plateau pour filmer Les Déguns 2. Candice sera remplacée par Arielle Kebbel que nous avons déjà vu dans The Vampire Diaries: : Il s’agit de Lexi, le meilleur ami de Stefan ! Charlie sera remplacé par Stephen Moyer. Aussi Selma Blair, qui joue la mère de Tessa, est remplacée par Mira Sorvino. En plus de toutes ces modifications, il y a aussi une nouvelle arrivée : Carter Jenkins, qui jouera Robert, le potentiel amoureux de Tessa.

La raison de tous ces changements est que le fait de tourner deux films ensemble empêche aussi certains des acteurs principaux de participer à d’autres engagements professionnels ou autres.

Burleigh had married Stella Lallian Gilbert, in Calgary, earlier in the summer.

Burleigh happened to be in the Central became he began a get-rich-quick scheme in Calgary about the same time. He was selling Calgary lots, which he didn't own, to farmers and others not skilled in Western conditions and had still two months of his term to serve when the Toronto wife complained to the Morality Department asking release.

"This person," Crown Attorney Hughes said, "is dangerous, commercially, and morally. I don't think there are good in him. He tricks people commercially to get the means to trick them morally. I think he should be put away for a long time.

The magistrate agreed, to the extent of three years in the penitentiary.

Burleigh smiled grimly and had but one comment: "I guess Wednesday is my hoodoo day. Detective Miller arrested me on a Wednesday. I was sentenced on a Wednesday, my time was up on a Wednesday. I was married both times on Wednesdays and here it's Wednesday again."

[Burleigh finished his term in the Central and was brought to Kingston in March 1913, and became convict #F-565. He was a 'good conduct' inmate and was released early, in late 1914, having earned his full remission. He seems to have gone back to Calgary after release and ended up in the Alberta Penitentiary. He was paroled from there on good conduct, but was harassed by local police who knew of his record. He wrote to the head of the Dominion Parole service for advice in 1917, and in response was told the federal authorities had no say, nor could they help him dissolve his marriage. Nonetheless, he did well on parole and there is no record of further sentences that I can find.]

Oh boy, this is a pretty stinky episode in my opinion, but we get to talk about Janeway's hair some more, so there's that.

We start with Janeway's gothic holonovel! Jeri Taylor was responsible for introducing this storyline, and I see what she was going for, but the problem is that the holonovel is very boring and not terribly credible as a leisure activity for our overworked and underpaid captain. I'm so very confused about Lord Burleigh, who ought to have at least an edge of Byronic charm but is giving us nothing to work with. Of course it is Star Trek and genuine on-purpose sex appeal is hard to pull off.

We do get the first interaction that one could, if you really squint, call sapphic (on the logic that, in a post-Daphne Du Maurier's Rebecca world, all interactions between governesses and housekeepers are inherently psychosexual).

I do not love a Victorian gown but Janeway's hairdo is pretty fun! This woman has so much hair and it's hard to imagine her styling it reliably without some help. My head canon is that Voyager has a holographic barber and Janeway regularly heads down to the holodeck when her coif needs coiffing.

Speaking of the coif, she has a more streamlined version of the French twist from the last episode. It's still better than her usual but a bit awkward and helmet-y. Again, I just think that an undercut (or even a pixie cut) is the solution they're looking for. Her poor hair stylists.

The rest of the episode is, appropriately, a ghost story. (It's gothic, geddit?) I guess it's an okay plot - people are getting possessed, someone is lying, there's a ghost cam POV, nothing adds up. For me it lacked stakes and suspense, especially on a rewatch. During most of the episode we just have a general vibe of "something is up"; without substantial more clues, it's hard to feel like we're solving the mystery alongside the characters.

Oh boy, the medicine wheel! I don't feel like I have any business trying to make sense of what's going on here, beyond the fact that the medicine wheel they're portraying seems to have more in common with appropriated New Age practices than Indigenous / Pan-Indian beliefs (and, of course, Chakotay doesn't have a tribe so it's impossible to say what's "correct" for this character).

Also, the whole conceit of "character has a religious practice; science fiction stuff happens that superficially resembles, but does not actually have anything to do with, this religious practice," feels pretty wonky, especially in this case. Once again Chakotay's culture is instrumentalized for the sake of the plot.

I did think it was an interesting touch that the Doctor is knowledgeable about Indigenous medicine. I like this, but it's such a can of worms! The Doctor is able to provide culturally-informed care, but he's still programmed by / presenting as a white guy; I feel there's a tacit implication that inclusive medicine is when white people learn about non-white practices. What if Starfleet vessels had Indigenous holograms programmed by Indigenous people? Or if the EMH had subroutines that adapted his presentation, knowledge, and practices to any patient? What would it mean to decolonize AI, both in our world and in science fiction?

My notes from the scene where Chakotay finally wakes up - "All Doctor wants to do is to write papers, all Janeway wants us to touch her crew inappropriately." Girl, get your hands off that man's chest! Janeway's wandering hands are an iconic part of her performance, and of course good acting often benefits from more physical proximity than would be appropriate in real life, but you are his boss, ma'am.

Yeah, sorry, this one did truly nothing for me. 1.5/5 vaguely racist musical flute cues.
