in the discussion of old fandom terms we should resurrect, may i put forth "shipper goggles"? i suppose it can be used in a derogatory way but in my early fandom days, saying that you've put on your shipper goggles meant "i'm aware that it might not have been the creator's intention, but i see a romantic dynamic between these characters" or more bluntly: "canon can do whatever it wants, i'm shipping it anyway." it's freeing when your love of a pairing is no longer beholden to what happens onscreen. it's so much more fun to gush about endless possibilities rather than be locked in bitter vitriol when the source material doesn't live up to your hopes.

it feels like too much of fandom rhetoric these days are complaints about how canon did our ships dirty, and that's fair. but i miss seeing the fun, wild discussions on awesome noncanon scenarios - that acceptance that canon will never match our fantasies and that's okay.

idk just a thought.
