Accidental Captain Piggy

Episode 1: "Fearful Symmetry" (2/2)

The comic below is drawn in a cute loose style of monochrome digital ink-and-gouache.

The oozing space creature sneaked around a corner while they were talking. “The anomaly got inside!” said Mesze, who leaped forward to fire his phaser into its mass. “We can mourn Bushly later! Now I’m captain, I’m responsible for saving us!”

T'Bok was covering the captain’s body with a sheet. “I’m the CHIEF SCIENCE OFFICER on this SCIENCE VESSEL. I am the logical captain!"

Dr. Pegi said, “Actually…” but they weren't listening.

“I’m first officer! You’re delusional!” snarled Mesze while he stabbed the anomaly.

Undeterred, Pegi said, “Before Bushly died, I promised I would become captain! And I know just how to save us!”

Mesze and T'Bok were arguing in the background, so they didn’t notice her resolve. “You are a FOOL!” hissed T'Bok, to Mesze’s reply of “I HATE YOU”

Pegi flung herself against the space anomaly for a hug. “Hi honey <3”

NOW Mesze noticed. “Pegi no!” he cried, leaping in shock.

Lovingly, Pegi whispered, “Let’s talk ceasefire,” to the slimy thing she hugged.

Shlurp! The whole top half of her body was pulled inside.

“No!!!” shouted T'Bok.

“Wait! The anomaly is retreating!” said Mesze, barring T'Bok from interfering.

Indeed, a few minutes later, we saw the anomaly withdrawing from the TRUCKEE.

Dr. Pegi reported to Admiral QobeS'h back at Starfleet command, still slimy. “That ‘anomaly’ was a scared psychic slug! It left once we promised to vacate the nebula! Not bad for my HOUR as captain! :)”

QobeS'h on the monitor said, “You went above and beyond! Now I must ask you to REMAIN captain!”

“Admiral QobeS'h!” she exclaimed.

“Mesze and T'Bok won’t stop fighting! We need an adult in the room!”

“Adult? MeeEEeeEEE?” Pegi asked, all full of hearts and excitement at the prospect.

“It’s six months to dock from deep space. Can you do it?” asked QobeS'h.

“Yes SIR admiral!” she said, saluting, which nobody in Starfleet ever does ever.

Mesze and T'Bok argued psychically behind her. “This is YOUR FAULT!” says Mesze. “YOU ARE VERY ILLOGICAL” says T'Bok.

One of the things I love most about Star Trek is that is goes on forever. You like a character? Beyond the episodes, there's more than likely at least dozen novels about them. Not enough? Have a ton of comic books where they go on even more adventures. Still need more? Here's a thousand fanfics. Here's a background graphic from an episode seen for 0.2 of a second detailing their education and qualifications. Horny for them? There's art for that, fic for that and maybe even naughty photos of the actor. Starships your thing? Here's a technical manual explaining how things work, and a set detailed floorplans. Want more? Here are books on the histories of the pretend starships, with endless variant designs and backstory for their creation. Still not enough? Walk around the ship on the laptop or computer as if you're there. You like the aliens? Here's a novel detailing their backstory. Here's a pretend travel guide to their planet. Still not enough? Here's an old Star Trek book with details about their anatomy. Still want more? Here's a fan diagram of the alien's penis.

I can't find any context for this little comic, which is tragic because I LOVE the alien design. The utility "belt" with all the saddle bag pockets??? Incredible. Then Spock pressed up against the panel with McCoy for some reason, and Uhura as captain??? Ugh it's delicious.

The TV shows and movies: Everyone has seen them, they're the canon, everyone knows about it, it's all good. Even the stuff that contradicts the other stuff. Even the episodes and movies everyone hates.

The novels and comics: 2% of the viewing audience have read them. They probably happened between episodes, but they're never ever referred to on TV (except that ONE time on Voyager). Vetted thoroughly (well, since Killing Time at least) and approved by people involved in the show prior to publishing.

The fanfic: These adventures are so numerous and secret, not even the people involved in the show knows about them (erm... with the exceptions of Spirk and Garashir, which have been referenced in Lower Decks and the Lower Decks mobile game. And Ni'Var being named for a poem in an ancient fanfic. And T'Khut. And possibly Una but maybe that's coincidence because after all Una = One). Literally anything can and does happen. Did they happen? Who knows? Who cares? They sometimes get to have sex. Gay sex.

The fan films: Non-canon adventures where the uniforms don't fit so well, sometimes featuring some of the actual Trek actors so not very secret at all. Probably happened in alternate universes with inferior Starfleet tailoring.

The fan manuals: Often more detailed and thoroughly researched than the official ones. Deck by deck plans of starships, instructions on what buttons do what on the bridge and extremely exhaustive backstories for starships only mentioned in passing in official technical books. The people in charge know they exist and shut loads down in the 90's for trying to make money off the Star Trek name. Did they all happen? So long as you don't try to actually compare walking routes on the shows to the floorplans of the Enterprise.

The fan art: At a con Mark Leonard (Sarek) once saw a naughty 'zine illo of naked, chained up Spock. Denise Crosby has been sent Data/Tasha naughty art. People involved in the shows sometimes see it, and are often bewildered by it. Oh, and IDW kept accidently tracing fan art of starships in their comic books because I think they just use Google image search. Did they happen? Yes. Especially the naughty ones.

The A.I. art: endless shitposts of your favourite characters doing anything your caffeine addled, sleep-deprived brain can come up with. Spock taking down the Christmas tree? Kirk cleaning the gutter? Picard having a replicator/soup catastrophe? Riker defeating John Cena at Wrestlemania? Janeway making ends meet by posing for naughty magazines in her Academy days? The people involved in the shows probably actively wish it didn't exist (at least until they find a way to monetise it). Did they happen? Well it's kinda like that time Barclay made out with a holographic copy of Troi...
