Because I’m insane, I’m watching TOS. And since it seemed to be entertaining, I’m writing commentary. I take no responsibility for how incoherent this is. (Fair warning, there is swearing bc this show is wild)
Bro why were there two people walking around in street clothes? Why does she walk like thattttt
Not the doctor giving him alcohol
Also hello Una ik ur not Una yet but hello <3
This is so weird cause there’s absolutely *no* context to anything they mention. Whatever happened on Rigel, we have *no* idea about.
Ayo Pike’s horses!!
Hello Spock.
HAHHAAAA WHATTT was that a PIECE OF PAPER???? BRO WHAT CENTURY IS THISSSSSS HAHAHA
IT IS!! It’s a piece of PAPER hahahaa
Intercraft? What does that mean??
The bridge was soo tiny back then.
And i love the little goofy effects. They so silly.
Yet again, reports on paper??????? They can pilot a ship through space and go to different star systems, but they can’t send an text??
“I Can’t get used to having a woman on the bridge?” BRO WHAT THE BLATANT SEXISM IS KILLING ME. C’mon, pike, in about 60 years of real time, you’ll be on a bridge with primarily woman. AND UNA’S LITERALLY YOUR FIRST OFFICER WHAT ARE YOU ON ABOUT
The sound effects are soo silly
And the audio is killing me
Im gonna stop commenting on the obvious low budget stuff because it is *so* bad. But also so wildly impressive for a show that has such a low budget
A SPOCK SMILE IN EPISODE 1?! What is this???
Ah hello, Vina. Of course, it’s been only 18 years since the landing and Vina is very much 18 years old, and pike is very much not, but of course there’s gonna be a whole thing now. And hello talosians!!
“Prime specimen.” What
HAHAHA the way the talosian put him to sleep that was hilarious
I love how the phaser produces wind HAHA
Yo ik he just got kidnapped but that bed/couch looks so comfortable i want it
The shadow puppet aliens are hilarious
It’s so strange how in the same breath this show can have a woman in charge of the ship and then be totally sexist
Oh the transitions are SO BAD he’s not even vaguely looking the same direction as he was in the last frame
THe whip sounds on the axe im dyinggggggggg
BRO WHHAT why did she hug him like that TF ive never seen anyone do that ever
EW BARF THIS IS SO GROSS VINA WHAT
Their little goggles I canttttt
Okay turn off the lasers now ur just wasting power
ADAM AND EVE WHAT
The random music hahahhaaa
Ayo he refuses to eat so they put him in hell??? The goofy fire effects lolll
Also i wanna know about that bird species that they put in the cage. There are so few winged species in memory alpha, literally just that one that has wings made of butterflies in disco
YO its the horses and a picnic
Im so confused how this becomes the pike and vina we know from disco
“I can’t help but love you.” Ew ew this is all ew
What is happening
Literally the misogyny is weirddddddddd
What just happened.
Ayo she’s not 18 she’s actually old gross. Wait they changed that in disco i think.
EW what why do they say that abt una. I doubt any of these things are true
Literally the whole premise of this episode is pike resisting fucking one of 3 women while aliens try to make him horny
This is weird as helll
The airbag veins hahaha
“A unique hatred of captivity” bro tf
Whoa they had no idea how to make old or injured makeup. Oh wait that actually makes some sense
Bro wait so the ending is just she stays as a captive with a fake pike??
What is this
Also the lighting was so wacky
A clipboard with paper whattt
The yeoman i cant

Star Trek, 001 (0ct. 4, 1988) - "The Cage"
The Breakdown
In this original initially-unaired Pilot (filmed in 1964 but not released in it’s entirety until 1988), we are introduced to the crew of the Enterprise which canonically precedes Kirk’s legendary five year mission.  It’s just another day for the crew when they receive a distress signal to a planet (Talos IV) where some scientists apparently got stranded and lost decades ago.  Upon beaming down to check on everyone Captain Pike meets a cute blonde lady named Vina who lures him into a trap, or cage, if you will.
It turns out all the old scientists were just an illusion projected by some big headed aliens (aka the Talosians) with some fairly powerful telepathic abilities. They explain that they want Pike to mate with Vina (who turns out to be real) in order to supply them with a whole zoo of human slave babies. Pike is made to understand that his refusal will result in excruciating mental torture; although in fairness they explain that Pike’s stay could be tantamount to paradise if he cooperates.  Pike resists by overwhelming the Talosians with intentionally rageful thoughts (which, conveniently, is their weakness), until he can convince his captors that trapping people against their will is… wait for it… bad.  The Talosians, for their part, seem genuinely shocked at this revelation, and so they agree to let Pike go.
Oh, and it turns out Vina was severely damaged from the accident that stranded her on Talos, so she can’t come with Pike because the illusion that grants her beauty would cease if she left the planet.  Since ugly women aren’t allowed to be love interests in Starfleet, the Talosians agree to take care of her, and even provide her with a nice sexy illusion of the Captain himself, presumably so she can have a live action Pike-sex-toy to keep her company.  So I guess it’s bittersweet ending?
The Verdict
‘The Cage’ is an interesting look at what might have been. Overall I think Kirk’s Enterprise and it’s crew are more entertaining, but I wonder if I might have come to prefer the more-serious Pike over kirk’s swagger. For starters I think Jeffery Hunter is probably a better actor than Shatner at this stage in both of their careers (put the pitchforks down, you’re welcome to disagree), and I also find Pike is written a lot less sexually predatory. Don’t worry though, Pike is still plenty sexist here; apparently having women on the bridge doesn’t sit well with him, which makes me wonder if ‘Strange New Worlds’ will ever give us a flashback episode to explain this change in his attitude (since this episode is still officially canon).
2.5 stars (out of 5)
Additional Observations
Pike’s doctor prescribes drinking as a form of therapy. Don Draper would approve.
I do wish Majel Roddenberrys ‘Number one’ could have been included amongst Kirk’s crew. I always thought having Spock as both Chief Science Officer and First Officer was odd. But apparently the 60’s weren’t ready for a woman with authority.
I love the pulpy set designs. As cheap as it looks now, it has such a classic aesthetic. I dig it.
I just realized that this episode was filmed roughly as far in time from TNG’s premiere, as Enterprise’s premiere is from us now. I’m going to need a minute to let that sink in.

OK, I am aware that Dave Cullen is one of those Youtube commentators not everyone agrees with. I’m posting this link though because in this video he discusses some AMAZING work being done on behalf of Gene Roddenberry’s estate to create new Star Trek TOS footage using CGI, actors in prosthetics (in the image above I believe that is NOT Leonard Nimoy), and there is apparently some discussion of using this new next-gen technology to convert the 1970s Star Trek animated series to LIVE ACTION. As well as a holographic archive of Gene Roddenberry’s work.
This is a very thorough overview of what has been going on in the background for a couple of years, some of which was only revealed in the summer of 2022, but deserves more publicity. Wow!

there are a lot of daddy issues to go around on DS9 in general, but odo, bashir and garak are really in their own special little fucked up 'what am I but wrought in my father's image' club

I really wish I was in Starfleet because my autistic ass would have the best time ever. Special interest? There’s even a career path for it, go nuts. Masking at work? No need, Vulcans made it clear that a resting bitch face is absolutely appropriate in space. Stimming in public? Dude, there has been way weirder things happening today than just little old me, flapping my hands or making clicking noises. There’s a weird space orb floating around, maybe it’s some kind of new species that wants to make first contact, nobody cares if I continue to repeat the ad for Daisy’s Daring Disruptors (the one with the annoying jingle)

Like listen.
I know star wars and star trek have historically always been rivals. But I always saw it as a playful tongue in cheek oh you silly little nerd rivalry.
With sexual tension. Some kissing. Maybe tongue.
I didn't realize there are people who actually take it seriously still, like some life or death thing.
Lmfao.

so i've been working my way through tos and got to the menagerie, and i was under the impression that it was one of the good episodes but i just really did not like it. sure i liked seeing kirk and spock and stuff but i just really have an issue with the way that women are always treated in old trek, specifically tos. mostly through the use of makeup and to a lesser extent hair styling. makeup is seen as just an innate quality of women in star trek and the lack of it is shown to be dehumanizing. basically the main part of the menagerie/the cage that really upset me was when it's revealed that the vina's "beauty" is an illusion. and that she actually looks like *gasp* this:
Tumblr media
and basically it's framed that because she looks like this, with no makeup, some scarring, that means she can't go return to society and has to live on the illusion planet? like it essentially paints the picture that she has no value as she truly is and needs to stay on the illusion planet??? and what's worse is that after this scene, number one asks pike about if vina is coming and he says,
"No, and I agreed with her reasons."
WHAT?
it's just so incredibily messed up. and this is the second time this kind of thing has happened. in mudd's women there's the 3 women and annoyingly the entire crew is just enamored with them for some reason. BUT THEN its revealed that their beauty is actually not real. their makeup fades away and suddenly- THEY'RE UGLY!! except they just look like normal women?????? like look:
Tumblr media
star trek just conflates makeup with beauty. this is still a beautiful woman? but in the episode they're described as "ugly". tos just refuses to acknowledge the true humanity of women and it really shows. without makeup they are painted as completely undesirable. these are just the biggest examples i've seen so far but there are plenty of little things constantly. so in summary after watching the menagerie:

"I'm not normally a supporter of retcon but I really wish SNW would retcon the treatment of Pike. Instead his disability is still being treated like he's going to die in a few years. And maybe update the chair because we have way better tech than that chair now let alone in another 200 years. Pike's ending has always sat wrong with me because to change the concept of a place from a Cage to a Menagerie simply because Pike's disabled now is insane. It's still a cage and he still can't leave but he can walk again so I guess that's not important anymore."

A Lost Star Trek TV Special from 1975?
youtube
Video description;
Originally created in 1975, this television special, hosted by Leonard Nimoy, was a special airing of parts one and two of "The Menagerie" airing back to back with original segments by Nimoy.
While archiving a stack of vintage VHS tapes I discovered this television recording of the special which aired on Oklahoma City's KAUT-43 on February 6th, 1983.
Special thanks to D. Stone for source VHS tapes, The Retroist for his assistance, and Earl Green from TheLogBook.com for his video editing wizardry.
