The thing about Star Trek Voyager is that even though it’s a bad show, you can very clearly see the bones of a good show. All the ingredients that are needed to make the show good are there except for good and consistent writing. Which is why it’s so infuriating and also so compelling.

The voyager cast incudes some of my favorite characters in all of trek. Captain Janeway? Tuvok? Chakotay? B’elanna? The Doctor? Seven of Nine? Harry Kim? They are all such compelling characters!!! The actors all put their heart and souls into the performances! It is so easy to make up good stories about these characters!

And then a lot of the plots are actually good and compelling they just tend to lose the thread halfway through the episodes! The premise of the show is FASCINATING and they underutilize it immensely! A lot of the things that Do get written end up serving as incredible commentary on the time and NONE of it is self aware at all!!! It drives me nuts!

Like. It is so easy to keep watching voyager to feed the good version of voyager that lives in your brain. It is an excellent exercise in critical thinking and seeing what works about storytelling. The sets, the make up, the sound design, is all Incredible and it’s so visually fun to immerse yourself in.

And like. It’s fun! It’s a fun show! They boldly go! They get into situations! They have really compelling character arcs! They pose interesting questions! Do they think any of this through or resolve anything? Hell no! But part of Star Trek is making you think anyway! And it is SO fun to think about voyager. It is so fun to be like ok this is what I would have done to make this episode work, or, what do you think they were actually going for here, or, this was accidentally a really good commentary on what it’s like to be biracial or traumatized entirely by accident how wild, right?

And like that’s why every voyager fan is so deranged yes (I include myself in this god bless) because it takes a certain kind of person to see this show and care about it and think about it. And it also just hits that perfect spot in the curve where there is so much potential and also so much content that was not delivered on to make it absolutely Perfect for fan interpretation and fan content.

Ahh, another reason why season 7 isn't my favorite Voyager season -- the number of times Seven is naked. It's two times but the number of times other people do it to her is not great.

Also, she should have a lot more implants on her back and patchy skin.

There should be implants along her ribs and her spine.

Otherwise why else was Seven wearing the catsuit??

If Seven's skin is that flawless she should've been wearing a uniform since season 5. Also, she put herself in Science colors, and she wanted a room of her own :(.

me in 1987 - star trek the next generation RULES, this show is doing things i've never imagined, i love it

a bunch of wierd nerds for the last 30 years - wow s1 of tng is ROUGH compared to the later show

me for 30 years without regular access to rewatch the older episodes - well i have no reason to doubt them, i was six when farpoint aired

me now, going back and loving s1+2 for how fkn WIERD they are compared to how formal the structure of the later seasons became - man what the hell, i was right the first time, this absolutely rules

#tng #star trek the next generation #oldblogging #in s1 they didn't even have ten forward and all the civilian clothes were these absolutely wild late 80s jangly new wave designs #it was literally a completely different show and i can get it being jarring going back but it's actually super good and interestinG #meanwhile s2 does a shift in direction that the later seasons didn't really run with but ds9 DID which makes s2 also super interesting #but for a whole different set of reasons #the early show is actually my favorite at htis point #s3-7 were really where tng became the show everyone remember but part of finding that winning formula was taking less risks #like you can really see the sharp edges in s1-2 and those edges were what made ds9 sing #and moving away from the stately #demeanor of tng was what let voyager find it's own voice in it's own later run #like voyager 1+2 feel off vs 3-7 bc voy s1 feels like tng s8 #it's not til s3 that voyager really gets it's own vibe going #and ds9 had the same growth cycle #where tng s1+2 are about finding a new voice for the new era #the rough patch on the other shows is about moving away from tng back towards that early experimental phase #so tldr season one of tng feels like voyager and season two of tng feels like ds9

I think “Scorpion, part II” (S04E01, Stardate 51003.7) is a strong conclusion to start Voyager's fourth season. It is a little shaky in parts (particular the lax security considering Chakotay's distrust of the Borg) but the crew managed to find a way to survive bot the Borg and Species 8472.

I wanted to evoke some echoes of my Best of Both Worlds episode poster from TNG with the introduction of 7 of 9.

I have a lot of ideas for how to fix season 7 of Voyager but honestly this is my top one:

So you know how DS9 inexplicably became a 50s jukebox musical in its last season? That, but with SEA SHANTIES.

It’s all public domain, so they wouldn’t have to pay for licensing. And listen. LISTEN. Voyager at its best is “what if ‘The Bonny Ship the Diamond’ was a TV show”

Anyway forget the French bar and the tropical resort and the Irish town, the holodeck is stuck as a pirate ship now. Season 7 is saved. You’re welcome.

It is pretty helpful knowing that I can avoid a fair amount of Voyager spoilers just by averting my gaze anytime I see short hair Janeway. I'm still in the long hair Janeway times.

Other than that tho damn y'all it's hard because this cast just really did a much better job than other series casts of taking care of their skin 😂

The TNG cast either aged like milk (I'm sorry I love them but it's tru lmao) or changed their hair a bunch, but like Voyager cast out here just looking frozen in time. It's honestly impressive.
