With Alan Scott’s first solo book since 1949 now officially announced, I thought it was about time to finally put together a reading guide to all his appearances as a gay man in DC’s main continuity. If you’ve missed the beginning of Alan’s journey and you’ve got a couple questions that need to be answered, or you merely want to refresh your memory and celebrate this momentous occasion, this is the place for you!
VITAL
Green Lantern 80th Anniversary 100-Page Super Spectacular (2020) #1 -  a rehash of Alan’s origin from All-American Comics (1939) #16 with added details, now establishing Jimmy Henton as his lover and confirming Alan’s sexuality as well the gaycoding of his original appearances from so many decades past.
Infinite Frontier (2021) #0 - Alan comes out as gay to his children in a tearful confession regarding his past fears, his marriages, and the eighty years he’s spent in the closet.
DC Pride (2021) #1 - Alan meets Todd and his boyfriend Damon Matthews for lunch and a long overdue honest discussion -- featuring flashbacks to Alan and Jimmy’s first meeting and the subsequent train crash, as well as a newfound understanding between Alan and Todd and what it had meant for Alan to see Todd as an out gay man.
THE DCU AT LARGE/ONGOING
Infinite Frontier (2021) #1-6 - picking up immediately after the aforementioned IF #0 and DC Pride, the series sees Alan and Todd working together to solve Jennie’s mysterious disappearance and the destruction of the JSA’s HQ. Alan’s sexuality is referenced throughout the book, and the complicated father-son relationship between him and Todd is further explored.
Dark Crisis (2022) #1-6 - Alan is a main character in the series, dealing with themes of legacy and the official return of the JSA.
Dark Crisis: The Deadly Green (2022) #1 - the one-shot sees Alan coming back to his magical roots, and features him as the key to defeating the Great Darkness with his children’s help. Notable for featuring four generations of DC’s mainstay LGBT characters (Alan, John Constantine, Todd Rice, and Jon Kent).
The New Golden Age (2022) #1 - this one-shot sets up the Justice Society of America (2022) ongoing series and the Stargirl: The Lost Children (2022) six-issue miniseries, it’s also the first story set in the 1940s to feature Alan after his coming out and it officially confirms that Doiby Dickles was aware and accepting of his sexuality.
Justice Society of America (2022) - current ongoing series, Alan is a main character.
UPCOMING
DC Pride (2023) #1 - the one-shot will feature a team-up between Alan and Apollo & Midnighter in the story entitled ‘Anniversary’. Out May 30th 2023!
DC Pride: Through The Years (2023) #1 - the one-shot serves as the starting point for Alan’s upcoming series. Out June 13th 2023!
Alan Scott: The Green Lantern (2023) #1-6 - the six-issue miniseries is a ‘year one’ type story, exploring Alan’s rarely-seen coming of age and his life as a gay man in the 1940s. Out October 3rd 2023!
ELSEWORLDS
Tales from the Dark Multiverse: Crisis on Infinite Earths (2020) #1 - Alan is one of the main characters in this Elseworlds one-shot, making the ultimate sacrifice to save the world after revealing to Todd that he knows what it’s like “to hide your light”.
Injustice: Year Zero (2020) #1-14 - Alan is a main character in this prequel miniseries, he and Jimmy Henton are a married couple. To date, issue #13 features Alan’s only on-panel kiss.
OFFICIAL ENCYCLOPEDIAS
The DC Comics Encyclopedia New Edition (2021) - this is the very first official DC encyclopedia to refer to Alan as a gay man.
The DC Book of Pride (2023) - this encyclopedia of DC’s LGBT characters features an entry on Alan.

Y'know, this answer deserves its own post. @tardigradetheking
They story they're telling seems pretty obvious to me:
Mickey Mxyzptlk, an entitled manbaby comic book fan who hates modern continuity and wishes things would go back to the way they were when he was a kid, traps (what he considers to be) the "real" Young Justice (only the boys, no girls allowed) in his idea of what their original adventures were like. Cassie, being ignored by the sexist twat, winds up being his undoing as she works to free her friends from the outside with the help of the rest of the original team.
That's the elevator pitch, the logline. I say the rest of the old team because I suspect Greta would have also been involved, had the Stargirl Spring Break Special not already set her up as being slated for the Lost Children. The Devil, of course, is in the details:
Mickey's idea of the boys' adventures are heavily skewed by his own biases which he, like the comic book bros on Reddit and Twitter, insist were part of those stories even when they weren't. Hence the exaggerated sexism, racism and homophobia.
He's also trying to reset the YJ boys back to who they were specifically in the early issues of Young Justice, ignoring all the growth and change -- both positive and negative -- that's happened to them since. Again, reflecting attitudes from entitled fans on social media, including here on Tumblr -- look at how many people care more about Cassie's fucking hair than her personality or experiences.
Kon slips into this illusion more easily than the others because he's adrift in the current timeline, without a place for himself -- his whole upcoming miniseries is already set to be about him figuring that out, but for now he's lost, and the future he always expected to be waiting for him -- being Superman -- has been given to someone else. Of course he wants to stay in the time when he never had to grow up and the future was full of possibilities. The more he lets himself give in, the more his mind slips into that kinda asshole bro sentiment -- which, let's face it, he had more than a trace of in the 90s.
Bart, meanwhile, is naturally resistant to this sort of thing partially because of his particular power set and partially because, despite all he's gone through, he's ultimately still the guy who goes with the flow, rolls with the punches, and accepts things the way they are. Whereas Tim is somewhat susceptible to slipping back into when things were easier, when he could just be Robin and hang out with his friends and never had to bury any of them, but gets jarred out of it when the reality tries to forcibly reset the recent changes that have made him happiest.
These differing attitudes result in conflict and naturally dredge up a bunch of drama related to those past changes that they haven't talked about. Cassie's having similar encounters with Cissie because they're using the fact that Cissie is no longer a superhero as a reflection of Cassie and the boys all being on the wrong pages with one another. Which they are, because they're literally not on the same page anymore -- it's been ages since their canon selves have truly shared experiences, they've all been off doing their own things with their respective "families," and they no longer know where the others are coming from. But with each conflict, they're baring... well, conflict, things that have gone unspoken between them. Now that those things are spoken, they can be resolved.
It's not a perfect story. The art is definitely a little hit or miss (pro tip: blame the artist and the editor for not knowing which Bedlam to cameo, not the writer), the pacing feels a bit rushed and (speaking of Bedlam) the whole story would've been stronger if they used him as the villain instead of a new character no one's ever heard of. But that last part is kinda par for the course at DC right now.
Otherwise, the story's pretty straightforward. It's meta, it's criticism, and they're pretty bold to critique their fandom so blatantly, but there's nothing confusing about it.

Sorry if this is a bad question or more likely just hopeless. I’ve been trying to find a good Connor Hawke comic to read (first found out about him in Damian’s Robin solo and he and Rose were the only two things I liked besides the Robin chase but I’m a bat brat) and I’ve only read the Silver Monkey story and as I’m not a fan of Oliver Green at all (my exposure to him has in no way been positive) and I HATE Dixon and I know he’s the main writer for Connor, but I had to drop the Tim solo because of his obvious, I guess bigotry would be the right word to use here, but he is one of the three writers I refuse to let myself read anymore to try and keep my blood pressure low. Are there any Connor stories or series that exist outside of those parameters to read because I’m having 0 luck. I’m also not sure if you’re a fan of Mia or Emilio or have any go-to stories for them, but I know nothing about them and I’d like to change that if at all possible.
i understand, i do i do. while i think dixon is capable of good character writing, and he did manage to do it in connor's run, i also understand his very very obvious politics shine through all the time and it gets tiresome (at one point in his ga run he manages to write OLIVER QUEEN "both sides"ing literal nazis that he and hal fought in GL/GA). here's the best i can do for recs outside of dixon (though few and far between)
Before i start, i do wanna clarify that his character in robin is. well. pretty different from his actual pre-established character. I'm not saying you won't like him, and im genuinely begging you to give him a shot, but if youre looking for the snarky brawler type, you might be a lil thrown by the polite buddhist monk you're gonna get.
you are in luck, as his first few appearances were by kelley puckett, so if you havent already read GA vol. 2 #0, do that first! #91 and #92 are also by puckett until dixon takes over for #93, so read those if you dont mind just stopping in the middle of an arc, otherwise avoid.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
now this next rec IS 1/3 written by dixon but if you can get through it, the crossover connor has with wally and kyle is enjoyable, thats Green Lantern Vol. 3 #96, GA Vol. 2 #130, and The Flash Vol. 2 #135
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Connor's JLA run! JLA Vol. 1 #8-#15, #8 and #9 are specifically about connor saving and joining the league, the rest of the issues just feature him in a team setting, as, well, its the league.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
if you want to read mia as well, read Green Arrow: Quiver (GA Vol. 3 #1-#10), Connor plays an important role but its almost entirely in the very last issue, and it's more about Ollie's role dynamic with him than anything else, so just read that if it tickles your fancy.
Tumblr media
I wish i could recommend more of GA Vol. 3 for connor, unfortunately he's pretty fucking sidelined, and for every good moment theres 2 bad ones. (immediately after quiver he is shot and put in a coma for an arc, somehow this isnt the last time this happens.) Though i do recommend #11, and i think #21 is a good issue to read for ollie and him, but it also includes a pretty huge retcon to Connor and Ollie's past
Other than those, he has One-shots in Green Arrow 80th Anniversary 100-Page Super Spectacular: "One", DC Pride 2022: "Think Of Me", and DC Festival of Heroes: The Asian Superhero Celebration: "Hawke & Kong"
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
to answer your second question, my URL aint lesbianspeedy for nothin! Mia is what i breathe and bleed, my recs for her are here!
as for Emi, your best bets are Green Arrow Vol. 5 #18-#20, #22, #28-#34 for her origin (though read N52 green arrow at your own risk, even i havent properly read these), Green Arrow Vol. 6 #1-#7 (this may feel like a completely new character, i'm sorry, dc has a angsty characterisation problem, if you enjoy either of these characterisations, i'd recommend you keep reading said runs past my specific recs for more issues with her!) and Stargirl Spring Break Special + Stargirl: The Lost Children #1-#6

Some of the things I hate the most in comics are characters who are time/universe displaced.
These types of things happen because of popularity and making it so that they are stuck in a place, still, I'm not fond of the trope when there are better alternatives.
Tumblr media
(DC universe: legacies #2).
Originally 2 of the founders of the seven soldiers of victory were Oliver Queen and Roy Harper, better known as green arrow and speedy. But here's the catch, since they didn't have a Alan Scott/Hall Jordan situation DC would often change the line up to not involve the archers... That is until 2021 with the stargirl spring break special where they reveal they got sent back in time by clock king and where the golden age heroes.
The previous solution was good or alternatively pulling an All-stars wouldn't be bad I think, hell @the-antiapocalyptic-man take on how a golden age green arrow would be is pretty cool.
Usually with these types of things DC easily solves with merging universes with yeah it works like 80% of the time.
Another character that fits the bill is power girl, I'm not a big fan of her (not that the character isn't great, it's just that I'm focusing on other heroes) but her history is intertwined with her "younger" counterpart in ways that honestly hurt both characters.
She is both an unfortunate outcome of editorial mandates and amazing writing.
From the other beast that dominates the comic book industry you have Miles Morales and... Oh boi.
Tumblr media
I have a love and hate relationship with him, I get why he is here but more than anything I'm frustrated about marvel inability to actually commit to the decision, one day he remembers he is from another universe and the other he doesn't so what is it? Oh and also while we are at it his 616 origin sucks and I fucking hate Aaron.
(I think a cool version of 616 miles would be him being the son of one of those 7 unnamed Brothers of Hobie, he is also a mutant and would take on the mantle of prowler after his uncle retires or something).
Now the main reason I made this post is Bart Allen, don't get me wrong I like all these superheroes and enjoy their displaced nature but what happens when Bart ages? Is he still gonna exist when parents are born? Obviously none of these questions are gonna be answered because these characters are never gonna age, even if it's there's an ongoing plot for it.
Oh and don't get me started Scott Summers and his panteon of children from apocalyptic futures.
Tumblr media
Anyway sorry for the long rant about me being racist agonist fictional people from other dimensions.

Was anyone confused about this part of the latest Flash issue? (The part where Jay sees Linda in her new costume and mistakes her for someone named Judy, then chalks it up to deja vu)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Because while I don't have the full context yet I can fill you in on some things.
This is actually the third time that Judy Garrick has been mentioned in the comics. She's a relatively new character and is evidently going to be important in an upcoming plotline.
In Flashpoint 2: Electric Boogaloo Thomas Wayne finds a bunch of prophetic scribblings on a wall. It's here that we get the first mention of one 'Judy Garrick'. The wall also says "the childminder has the lost children."
Tumblr media
Now the childminder and the lost children are a reference to Geoff Johns new Stargirl series where Courtney and Emiko look into the disappearances of several DC kids. Among the missing are Secret (Young Justice), Airwave (Suicide Squad), Wing (Justice Society of America), Jimmy Martin and many, many more.
Now, notably the Stargirl: Spring Break Special Edition, which was a one issue book that set up this new series, shows some of the missing children and they talk about Judy Garrick being with them.
Tumblr media
So with that context we know that Judy is a child that was once a hero in some capacity, is related to Jay somehow and that Jay knew her at some point but he doesn't remember her (as is common with this case, most of the children taken end up being erased from people's memories).
Tumblr media
People have been jumping to the conclusion that Judy Garrick is Jay and Joan's daughter, including the wiki page surprisingly, but while that's a possibility it is in no way confirmed. Judy could be Jay's niece for all we know.
I should also note that Jay and Joan were not able to conceive children and adopted their only child, Jimmy Garrick, after the war. Jimmy Garrick died before his first birthday due to illness and the Garricks decided not to have anymore children after that because it was too painful for them. To me, it seems unlikely that Judy is their daughter because of that but who knows. It's hard to say anything for sure because Judy seems to have been erased from their memories the same way Wally and Bart were. They could very easily say that she was actually there the whole time.
Alternatively, their adopted baby never actually died, it was a false implanted memory, and Judy Garrick is transgender. I like that theory a lot.

Can we get the official ufonaut alan scott costume ranking
YES WE CAN YES WE CAN!!!
i won't include variations like puffy or regular sleeves/long or short cape/chest symbol or no chest symbol (in the case of the 1940s and the 1990s respectively) because the general concept is the same and alan really hasn't had an extensive amount of costumes! without further ado:
10. the atrocious lantern body cast from justice society of america 2007
Tumblr media
i know he was paralyzed and he single-handedly brought himself back from the brink of death! i know he claims the lantern body keeps the starheart contained lest he explode and kill everybody! there's still no excuse for it. prolonged exposure to this atrocious costume induces blindness of the soul.
9. new 52 earth-two generic superhero costume
Tumblr media
it's not abysmal but boy, not even andy kubert can save it! as generic as it can get, this is a dollar store brand green lantern. new 52 alan-2 has his moments, rare as they are, especially early on in his series when he was written by james robinson but the costume never did work
8. the current justice society of america 2022 redesign
Tumblr media
it's not bad and i love the beard (and pray nightly that it means we're entering the alan scott bear era) but as far as redesigns go, it's almost an offensively lazy one -- his tights seem to have been traded for slacks and his shirt for a button up that's perplexingly got the logo slapped right on it (how does he unbutton it? that's for him to figure out and explode about). it's got no flair! no panache!
7. midlife crisis insanity extravaganza
Tumblr media
when alan turned young again in green lantern corps quarterly 1992 and proceeded to suffer various mental breakdowns throughout #4-5, he underwent a couple other significantly more temporary aesthetic changes too and quickly circled through a couple hellish landscapes that had him dressed real appropriately for them. i love this! the ponytail! the horns! the pointy ears! at the end of the story he finds out these illusions were mere reflections of how he feels about himself and isn't that a doozy! i'll let you do with that what you will
6. stargirl spring break special 2021 redesign
Tumblr media
this is a significantly better redesign! this is something that does feel like alan's classic outfit while still remaining new and exciting, it's not afraid to steer towards the possibility of ridiculous in order to bring us a real hit. however, it loses points for the boots inexplicably straying from the colour scheme
5. MURDER VIOLENCE RAGE
Tumblr media
while this is part of the above midlife crisis insanity extravaganza from glcq #5, i think it deserves its own place on this list solely because of how indicative it is of alan's rage (at the world! at molly! at himself!) and how utterly insane of a look it is
4. checkmate 2006 uniform
Tumblr media
i'm an enthusiast of eye patches and military-esque uniforms so this is one of my favourite alan looks ever and one of his most entertaining eras too but we see too little of this look before he either goes back into his regular costume or full civilian and that's a crime in itself! 10/10 despite the unimaginative colour scheme
3. MR KINGDOM COME
Tumblr media
MR KINGDOM COME
2. old faithful
Tumblr media
i mean, what is there to say? it's a classic! i adore alan's regular costume! i think it's one of those character designs to have just immediately gotten it so right it's crazy! it's a real beauty, drawing on mart nodell's love of greek mythology (the sandal-like laces on the boots), theatre (the tights, the ring), and a healthy dose of inspiration from douglas fairbanks' the black pirate 1926 (the shirt). it's really just great, as enduring and timeless as it gets!
1. SENTINEL (1992-1999)
Tumblr media
IT'S SENTINEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DEMONIC CAPE HAIR MASK. OPERA GLOVES. ALL SHARP ANGLES ALL THE TIME. ANGER LIKE YOU WOULDN'T BELIEVE. ALAN'S BEST LOOK AND ERA. YOU EITHER GET IT OR YOU DON'T!
