#starry night over the rhone
Text
I know they're not necessarily the most popular ones according to everyone but they're widely known and I'm not sure how many of us would agree on a top 9.
I may make other Van Gogh polls. I have polls about literature, art, comics etc in my pinned post.

Starry Night Over the Rhône d.1888 by Vincent van Gogh.
Tumblr media
📍Museè d'Orsay, Paris.
Vincent van Gogh was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter. In the span of a decade he created over 2000 artworks, most of which date from the final two years of his life. His works included landscapes, still life, self-portraits and portraits. In 1886, he moved to Paris where he met the avant-garde, and his paintings grew brighter during his stay in France. Van Gogh was not commercially successful during his lifetime, and suffered from severe depression and poverty. Van Gogh shot himself in the chest and died two days later. Today, his works are some of the most expensive paintings ever sold.
Post-Impressionism is a predominantly French art movement in the late 19th and early 20th century. It emerged as a reaction to Impressionists' concerns for the naturalistic depiction for light and colour. Post-Impressionists extend Impressionism whilst rejecting its limitations. They continued to use vivid colours, thick paint application and real life subject matter. An important aspect of Post-Impressionism is not what the viewer sees on the canvas but what the artists intent was. It aimed to bring out personal introspection, memories, fantasies or dreams to evoke emotions in the viewer.
The painting is one of van Gogh's paintings of Arles at night. It was painted on the banks of the Rhône a short walk from the Yellow House, which he was renting at the time. The challenge of painting at night intrigued van Gogh and the vantage point allowed him to capture the reflections of the gas lighting across the glimmering water. In the foreground, two lovers stroll by the river bank and in the background houses dotted along the banks radiate a light that reflects in the water. The stars glow with a luminescence, shining from the dark, blue and velvety night sky.

Note
worth noting your description says “Rhone” instead of “Rhine”
That's because the painting is called "Starry Night Over the Rhône," it depicts the Rhône river, not the Rhine https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starry_Night_Over_the_Rh%C3%B4ne https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rh%C3%B4ne I appreciate you trying to help though, as I've made similar typos in the past 😊

“A philosopher once asked, "Are we human because we gaze at the stars, or do we gaze at them because we are human?" Pointless, really..."Do the stars gaze back?" Now, that's a question."

“Those who love much, do much and accomplish much, and whatever is done with love is done well.... Love is the best and noblest thing in the human heart, especially when it is tested by life as gold is tested by fire. Happy is he who has loved much, and although he may have wavered and doubted, he has kept that divine spark alive and returned to what was in the beginning and ever shall be.If only one keeps loving faithfully what is truly worth loving and does not squander one's love on trivial and insignificant and meaningless things then one will gradually obtain more light and grow stronger.”

"Starry Night Over the Rhône" (Vincent Van Gogh, 1888)
"If I make better work later, I still won’t work otherwise than now; I mean it will be the same apple only riper — I myself won’t turn from what I’ve thought from the start. And this is why I say for my part, if I’m no good now, I won’t be any good later either — but if later, then now too. For wheat is wheat, even if it looks like grass at first to townsfolk — and the other way round too. "
(Vincent Van Gogh. Letter to his brother Theo Van Gogh, January 26th, 1885)

For any observer, the first thing that strikes you about "Starry Night Over the Rhône" is its use of vibrant colors. The swirling blues of the sky and the river, punctuated by bright stars and reflections, create a fascinating interplay of light and dark. This sets the stage for a unique dialogue between the cosmic and terrestrial elements.
Van Gogh's brushwork, characterized by thick, undulating strokes, brings a sense of dynamism to the painting. The stars don't just twinkle - they pulse and radiate, filling the night sky with energy. Similarly, the river doesn't merely flow, it shimmers and dances with reflected light.
The composition, with its high horizon line and asymmetry, further adds to the tension and excitement. It forces our eyes to wander, to explore the depths of the night, and to question the nature of reality. This perfectly captures the essence of Van Gogh's deeply emotional and experiential approach to art.
