Start Up ~ Second Watch
So I started to rewatch Start Up because I’m sort of depressed and don’t want to watch anything that I don’t really know the end of, so Start Up it is (I was going to watch season two of Alchemy of Souls once again, but I thought that 3 times in the same month would be a little too much and my mental illness would show too much).
Anyway, here’s how 26 year old Sara feels about it.
I’m still on Team Do San. I used to think that he was this sort of almost perfect male character, at least in kdramas. I no longer think that way, I can see his flaws. However I still think that he was the best match for Dal Mi. I think that people didn’t really get Do San’s “I wanna be your dream” line to Dal Mi and people often think that it’s something that is not. To me it’s like Dal Mi helped him understand what was his dream and in exchange he wanted to be that for her as well and build that with her.
Dal Mi, much like in the first watch but this time around a little more, still infuriates me. She’s so clueless, not just her in job at first, but she really tried hard and did her best to learn and eventually she did a really good job. She’s clueless in the sense that she never, not even once until it was too late, realized that something was off, that there was this tension between Do San and Ji Pyeong. Most of the time o feel as if she just turned a blind eye to it.
Ji Pyeong... I don’t think so badly of him during this second watch. He isn’t as bad as I thought, however he is no angel. My biggest criticism of him was that he could be honest with Samsan Tech without trying to crush them in the process. Rewatching it, it felt as if he took pleasure in saying those things to 3San. He always had this sort of smirk on his face. While he was that crude to 3San and everyone else, including  Yong San’s brother, he found a way to say the truth to Dal Mi while still being respectful of her feelings. So I feel as if he could have shown the same courtesy to 3San. Also he wasn’t the best in those last 4 episodes, making it seem as if he and Dal Mi were actually in a relationship.
The biggest issue in the drama was the writing, not how the story unfolds but the way the writers chose to have Suzy deliver some of the lines, implying that there was a chance of Dal Mi and Ji Pyeong being end game. The way I see it there was no chance of them ending up together. Dal Mi never looked at Ji Pyeong as something more than a friend or a mentor. At some point she does address the fact that he treats her differently, that she thinks that he might be interested in her and he never really replies to her. Ji Pyeong keeps losing all of his chances, while Do San is there every single time to help Dal Mi in any way possible, even if it’s just words of assurance.
My point is that Do San has always been end game, it was never Ji Pyeong.

can't stop thinking about yoonjung and yoonjae's necklaces actually. are there two or three? because when yoonjung died she wasn't wearing it. did the killer dig her up and put her necklace back around her? god
#tvn blind. i have like so many thoughts. but none of them are coherent. bc im like busyish at the moment. so my biggest question right now:#is sungjoon yoonjae or are his memories fucked up? bc in the ep10 preview eunki says what if youre remembering wrong.#and thats one of the theories i've had since the start. young yoonjae was too murderous and angry to somehow forget all about the center#he was deadset on revenge. he'd kill them all. he wasn't going to let them get away with it one way or another. and sungjoon...#hes not like that at all. yeah sometimes he loses his composure and beats criminals up. But not on purpose. he doesnt start with murderous#intent. is it there at all? or does he just have issues controlling his anger. he hits someone. then he loses control#i feel like its more of a control issue for him than a revenge thing. and yoonjae was a lot more controlled right? despite being a child#i kept thinking sj was 13 bc he kept saying it but all he remembers is 13 and the name yoonjae. he thinks that was his name from before#but theres no confirmation of that. the fuckers think sj's yj bc of his necklace. he couldve gotten it somehow. god im so#so sungjoon and inseong. theyre 12 and 13 for sure and if this kdrama says otherwise i will not be happy#inseong... oh my weird off putting little guy.... who might be gay.... diversity win your serial killer is gay#thats all i have to say on him. and sunghoon? all i have to say about him is that i support him. like babe im right there with u#the way inseong and sunghoon seem to know each other... the way inseong looked at him not just in a gay way but also in a way that#says sunghoon knows what happened to him.... i need to know more#honestly that producer fucker is so fucking horrible for having all that on tape and still doing nothing about it. who gave him the tip...

i finished watching tvn start-up a few weeks ago and it’s been knocking around my mind and i finally figured out why... i think the ending mostly failed to follow through on three main themes i thought it was setting up:
(1) “capitalism is theft.” in a system where everything is owned - a zero-sum game of have or have not - everyone steals. off the top of my head:
the system itself “steals” the life of dal-mi’s dad
do-san “steals” his gold medal
ji-pyeong and halmeoni see do-san with his gold medal in the newspaper and “steal” his name for the letters to dal-mi
dal-mi “steals” a level of success she does not actually have in order to look good in front of her rich estranged sister and mother
in-jae’s stepfather and stepbrother “steal” her company from her
do-san “steals” the connection with dal-mi created by the letters
in-jae “steals” dal-mi’s sand/swingset memory of their father
do-san and ji-pyeong each feel like the other is “stealing” dal-mi from them (big oof......)
alex “steals” the samsan tech developers
ji-pyeong “steals” a sense of intimacy he and dal-mi do not actually share in order to make do-san jealous post the 3-year time jump
on and on, everyone steals, mostly as a means of survival. yet when the truth of all these thefts come out, the show only examines the fallout on a character relationship level. even then, i think the only character who gets truly punished by the narrative for their thefts is do-san (and he might have been the only character who could have a reckoning of this magnitude anyway, as he was the only character whose relationship to their theft was an acute, painful, and ashamed awareness.) it would have been interesting if other characters had a sort of reckoning too, a shift in the way they saw the world when they realized how much the system made them steal, and then a bitter, conscious acceptance - or perhaps rejection - of that system.
(2) “do-san and ji-pyeong as opposing capitalist ideologies.” who cares about money when you have no compassion? vs. who cares about compassion? it won’t make you money (ep 9). these quotes weren’t said by do-san and ji-pyeong, but they were said by characters who do-san and ji-pyeong, respectively, would agree with. do-san creates noongil out of compassion even when it would make literally no money, which ji-pyeong points out and condemns him for. the show could have made their differing ideologies more integral to the love triangle itself (if there had to have a love triangle at all, which is a different post), i.e. when dal-mi - whose original reasons for reaching out to the do-san from the letters were rooted in a desire to show off (bluff, really) to her rich estranged sister - when dal-mi chooses do-san over ji-pyeong, it could have been bc she’s grown and her goals have now changed, and she wants to choose compassion (as a means to money and success), rather than money and success without compassion. it would have been about choosing what the guy represents as much as choosing the guy himself.
(3) “hands as support and competence.” the show actually mostly followed through on this thanks to do-san’s inability to understand metaphors, but i personally would have loved more hand shots in the last few episodes. in the beginning there were hand shots everywhere, like the first two times dal-mi sees do-san walking up to her (first as the guy who she thinks supported her with his letters, and second as the guy who’s supporting her as she tries to save face in front of her rich estranged sister and mother) there’s a shot of her fingers tightening on the handle of her purse; and every time do-san solves a problem there’s a shot on his hands working on the keyboard; and when he holds his out out to her to choose her as ceo over her sister; and when he knits scrubbies for halmeoni; etc etc. really makes u appreciate that there is nothing sexier than support and competence.

Soompi 240111 🌷 Minnie
< series masterlist
Tumblr media Tumblr media
SEVENTEEN’s Minnie joins the cast of the upcoming variety show “Apartment 404”!
The idol singer will be starring alongside comedy legends Yoo Jae Suk and Yang Se Chan, as well as actress Oh Na Ra and actors Lee Jung Ha, and Cha Taehyun. Created by Jung Chul Min, other known as PD Jung, who has already been credited with the hit variety show “Sixth Sense”, the six entertainers will have to solve the mystery behind multiple curious events that occur in their new residence.
tvN’s upcoming “Apartment 404” will mark Minnie’s first ever fixed casting in a variety show made for television! In the past, selected episodes of the idol’s group own YouTube entertainment show “Going Seventeen”, have been aired on TV, gaining her and the rest of the members a lot of national attention, as well as praise.
“I watched the first ever Gose (short for “Going Seventeen”) episode on JTBC, back in 2021 and just couldn’t stop laughing,” PD Jung told the reporter. “I was so surprised how idols could be so effortlessly funny. All of them seemed so smart while reaching such a high level of comedy.”
When asked how the producers came to choose Minnie, Jung Chul Min explained, “It was almost by accident. We were in a meeting and just talking about other possible cast members. Of course, we all knew that we’d need relatable and funny characters that would be entertaining to watch.” After a lot of back and forth, Minnie’s name fell and the room started laughing. “Kim Minnie is a very well acclaimed name, not only within South Korea, but also internationally, so she seemed very out of reach.”
After all, SEVENTEEN have reached the achievements “fastest selling global album of the century”, “first artist to exceed 3 million copies sold in the first day of release in Hanteo’s history”, and “highest pre-orders for albums in history, with 4.6 million sales”.
“But Yoo Jae Suk convinced us to ask her.”
The comedy legend and Minnie had already met years ago during an episode of “Running Man”, where the idol singer had appeared as a guest star. They seemed to have grown closer and kept in touch even after the shoot.
“SEVENTEEN was still on tour and had just finished filming another variety show with Na PD, but she found time to meet up with us and agreed almost immediately,” PD Jung recalled. “She shared her personal schedule and we set up filming dates right away. It must’ve been so busy for her… I remember her telling us that she had just landed and came to set right from the airport. I really respect her dedication.”
Filming for the variety show started last year, already gaining a lot of Carats’ attention when a picture of the cast was posted on Social Media.
Tumblr media
Twitter, Instagram, and Naver exploded with interested fans, who couldn’t believe their eyes.
“Since when is Minnie doing variety shows?!?!”
“IS THAT MINNIE FROM SEVENTEEN???”
“Jaesuk and minnie back together after running man😭😭 omg I’m so excited for this”
“Seventeen seems to be doing more tv stuff nowadays, I’m really happy!”
“Whatever this is, you better bet I’m watching it!!!!”
“Casting her turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made,” the producer admitted. He promised that Carats and variety show fans will be very happy with her appearance.
The show will air on February 15 on tvN and will make its international debut on prime video on February 23. The teaser has already got us on our tippy toes!

The way they keep emphasizing HW always saving HI's life is stressing me the f*ck out he's her savior and he keeps saying he'll save her life no matter what I really think they might actually give us him dying in her place and donating something to her after an accident or something and the ending is her pregnant and healed. I will be so heartbroken because they both deserve to live, Hyun woo didn't spend the last years of his life cleaning up after her family while they treated him so badly and then the last few months doing every single thing to protect hae in and them even risking his life multiple times for him to die when he was just starting to be happy again.
omg babes ABSOLUTELY NOT we are not putting this bad energy into the world!!!! haein who wants to be married to hyunwoo in every life cannot lose her man as much as he cannot lose her they’re pathetic without each other this would be licherally awful.
manifestations of a good happy ending for both of them idc how unrealistic it is we need GOOD VIBES only just like tvN 🧿

Interview. Lee Dong Wook about Gong Yoo (02/2024)
"I Was Going to Retire" Lee Dong Wook Tells How Gong Yoo Helped Him During a Deep Slump.
Actor Lee Dong Wook opened up about the tough time he had when JTBC's television series 'Life' (2018), in which he played the main character, got bad reviews.
"I experienced a deep slump after working on 'Life'. It was so serious that I didn't leave my house for almost a month."
"I was unhappy with my acting in the series and the whole situation.", Lee Dong Wook recalled, "The drama was getting online hate, and all of that negativity seemed to be directed at me. I started to think I was to blame, and felt bad about it."
Lee Dong Wook then shocked the producer by saying, "Actually, I was going to retire. I never said this on air, but I seriously considered retiring and moving to another country."
"The only thing I did during that period was exercise because I started to feel like I was a useless person. I thought exercising would help me get out of the negative thoughts that had been recurring in my head.", he said, adding, "But I didn't become more muscular or anything because I drank after working out."
The actor then mentioned someone who helped him overcome his slump: actor Gong Yoo, who worked with him in tvN's drama 'Guardian: The Lonely and Great God' (2016). "He's the one who got me out of my house.", Lee Dong Wook recalled. "He just called me one day and told me to step out and join him, telling me he was already on his way to pick me up. I didn't want to see him because I thought he'd try to talk about my state. Sharing what I was going through with someone else felt pointless, as there wasn't a solution.", he said. "However, he didn't ask anything about it. We had casual conversations that day, and it got me thinking, 'This is the world I belong.'. I had been obsessed with how people online perceived me. But there was a real world outside, and that was where I belonged. I started getting out of my house after realizing it."

What are your k drama recommendations??!? I need new ones
omg my time has come thank you anon for giving me the opportunity to ramble about shows
I ended up talking WAY too long so I'm putting everything after the first one under the cut
all of us are dead- show about high schoolers as a zombie apocalypse starts. very funny and relatable, literally they call the police and are like 'have you seen train to busan?' bffrrn. has a lot of social commentary and there are references to the sinking of mc sewol (a cruise that sunk where the captain deserted it and left a large amount of high schoolers to drown). commentary about how adults save themselves first/leave youth to fend for themselves. one of my comfort shows and although they didn't intend for more seasons, it was received so well that they have been renewed! I am also an ot4 truther and sometimes talk about them on my international shows sideblog: @nam-on-jo
sweet home- (disclaimer: I am not caught up and have not yet seen s2 which came out a little while ago) honestly I have no idea how to explain this so I'm gonna copy-paste the blurb: as humans turn into savage monsters, one troubled teenager and his neighbours fight to survive and to hold onto their humanity. basically people turn into monsters for [redacted] reasons and everyone in his large apartment building is stuck inside trying to fend for their lives.
my name- I'm just going to paste the blurbs going forward because it's easier: Following her father's murder, a revenge-driven woman puts her trust in a powerful crime boss -- and enters the force under his direction. bro some of these twists I expected but others caught me off guard. I love the main character and am a little gay for her but I think that's valid because she's a bamf. there was a plot point at the end of the second to last episode that I really didn't like and made me very upset. narratively I get why they did it but it made me sad so I'm still pissy. might get around to writing a fix-it fic one day when motivation strikes because my girl deserves better things.
the guest- a detective, a catholic priest, and a psychic join forces to fight crime caused by supernatural forces. not to say they are my ot3 but they kinda are. (other ppl interpret it is a lesbian and her two bi/gay bffs which I also accept but. ot3 tho). LOVED every twist and turn and how the three of them go from not trusting one another to being family. genuinely one of my favorites from all the kdramas I've watched over the years and I want to rewatch it again soon
happiness (tvn)- The residents of a high-rise apartment fight for their lives against a deadly infectious disease while Sae-bom and Yi-hyun try to find the person because of whom the virus spread. bro I adored this. some characters annoyed me (which means they were written effectively) but it has so much. fake dating/marriage (they wanted a better apartment lmao). annoyances to lovers. mean/rude woman soft for sunshine man. what you will do for the people you love. morals and humanity during a catastrophy. *smacks show* you can fit so much into this. no but seriously, I thought this was a really interesting take on the zombie virus! so some of the time you come off completely asymptomatic and 'normal', so people can get away with acting normal and hiding the disease around other people, so the paranoia and mystery is REALLY amped up. had me guessing a LOT. sae-bom and yi-hyun are both cops/detectives and you find out really early (ep 1/2?) that sae-bom is immune which gives a really interesting dynamic that leaves her (to yi-hyun's exasperation and heightened blood pressure levels) to be kinda reckless in the pursuit of truth and salvation. I'm rambling now because this is making me watch to rewatch but yeah as a zombie/dystopia/apocalypse lover this was a good watch. it's more story-focused than violence-heavy which was a cool and refreshing twist
alice in borderland- okay y'all I am aware people had mixed feelings about s2 but overall I did enjoy the series. 'Obsessed gamer Arisu suddenly finds himself in a strange, emptied-out version of Tokyo in which he and his friends must compete in dangerous games in order to survive.' what can I say, I love a dystopian-esque setting.
the silent sea- imma be real, I only watched it for loml bae doona from sense8. 'During a perilous 24-hour mission on the moon, space explorers try to retrieve samples from an abandoned research facility steeped in classified secrets.' basically earth is in severe crisis mode as they run out of water to drink. water has recently been found on the moon, and although there was a mysterious tragedy that happened previously to researchers looking for water in a base on the moon, they have reached a level of desperation where they have another mission to look for moon water. mystery, paranoia, a couple of good twists ensue. I thought it was pretty good even though I have some mixed feelings about the open ending.
semantic error- yes I am sliding a bl into this list. bitch you thought. of course my bl-loving self would mention this (I forgot about it until I looked up good kdramas to remind myself of stuff I have watched). 'A strict, rule-abiding computer science major must work together with an artist with a polar-opposite personality to his.' confident cool boy meets bitch boy. it's great.
and of course...
leverage con artists- I would be fired from running this blog if I didn't mention the beloved korean spinoff of leverage. 'The series follows the story of Lee Tae-joon, a former insurance investigator who forms a team of thieves and con artists to target the rich and wealthy. The team was also formed to avenge Tae-joon's son's death.' I've posted about it before so I won't go super into it but it's VERY camp, a good time, and the ot3 is alive and well. debatable more overt than their predecessor!
other mentionables:
I tried watching kingdom (again for bae doona) but couldn't really get into it. might try again later because it's critically acclaimed (I think) and has even gotten a spinoff series
my roommate really liked mr queen. I didn't really pay attention when we were in the same room and they were watching it but it's fruity
the island on amazon prime was good! interesting plot but not in my top 10 or anything. worth a watch if you're looking for a kdrama to watch in your spare time. features girlboss businesswoman being thrown into a world of the supernatural because [redacted]. supernatural black horse man keeps her safe while keeping a life-changing secret.
let's fight ghost was a thai show that I saw and loved that was adapted into a kdrama called bring it on ghost, but honestly I couldn't get through it because I liked the thai one better.
train to busan is technically a movie but it's iconic and well-known and I highly suggest watching it if you like zombie/apocalypse movies. disclaimer: kdramas do not have the slow 'walker' zombies. they are fucking fast and the stuff of my nightmares. would probably just jump off a bridge if this actually happened ngl
I did think that extraordinary attorney woo was cute. I never finished it and know that there are VERY valid criticisms about the perpetuation of media portraying people with autism in the stereotypical savant ways. however, I liked how the love interest accepted her for who she was, loved her because of who she was and made efforts to accommodate and learn how to comfort her in ways that would work for her
business proposal was pretty decent if you like lighthearted romance- I didn't finish it but would like to at some point
tale of the nine tailed was another one that my roommate and I started watching but never finished. it was alright! just lost interest
shows on my watchlist:
black knight (netflix)- 'In a dystopian future devastated by air pollution, the survival of humanity depends on a group of deliverymen known as the Black Knights who navigate the wastelands using unconventional means.'
copycat killer-
hellbound (netflix)-
shop for killers (hulu)- 'A nephew who lost his parents and grew up in the hands of an uncle who runs a shopping mall faces a new truth after his uncle's sudden death.'
the legend of the blue sea (viki + hulu)- 'A magistrate's plan to release mermaids into the ocean backfires when they're caught by fishermen.' (legit I just miss mermaid media)
gyeongseong creature (netflix)- 'In the city of Gyeongseong in 1945, a group of young people thinking only of their own survival encounter a monster born of human greed and ask themselves what humanity is.'
dark hole (viki)- 'A mysterious black fog from a petrochemical factory's sinkhole turns people into bizarre figures; people who are not infected try to survive in this middle of pandemonium.'
the cursed (multiple)- 'An enthusiastic social issues reporter, fighting against the evil hidden behind an IT conglomerate, meets a teen-age girl who is possessed by a spirit and has special abilities.'
blood (multiple)- 'Dr Park Ji Sang believes in the sanctity of human life, and struggles to treat terminally ill cancer patients and save lives while at the same time being a vampire.'
the ghost detective (viki)- 'In this horror thriller drama, a detective who catches ghosts tries to solve the case of his younger sibling's death with the help of his assistant.'
possessed (netflix)- 'A smart-mouthed detective and a reclusive psychic medium join together to get rid of the ghost of a murder who was executed 20 years ago.'
connect (hulu)- 'A man is kidnapped and one of his eyes removed by a gang of organ hunters; his eyes was transplanted into body of a serial killer; the unwilling donor now has terrible visions as he witnesses terrifying attacks on the residents of Seoul.'
and now just because so many of these only have het romances, I looked up k-dramas with lgbtq representation... (some of these recommendations were from articles from screenrant, movieweb, this subreddit, herzindagi (bl-focused), allkpop)
schoolgirl detectives (viki)- 'Five teenage girls join together to investigate mysterious incidents that occur at their school, as well as help classmate deal with bullying, depression and other crises.'
be melodramatic (netflix, viki)- 'Three 30-year-old best friends, Jinju, Eun-jung and Hanju each pursue different paths in both career and love. Despite life's difficulties, the three friends can always return home at the end of the day and support each other.'
lily fever (available w/subtitles on youtube)- 'The story revolves around the budding relationship between Kim Kyung Ju and Jang Se Rang who meet when Kyung Ju can't find her passport and has to go to her friend's house to try and find it.'
love alarm (netflix)- 'In a world in which an app alerts people if someone in the vicinity likes them, Kim Jojo experiences young love while coping with personal adversities.'
nevertheless (netflix)- 'The story of a romance between a man who is annoyed with relationships but likes to flirt and a woman who wants to date but does not believe in love.' (wlw side couple romance)

The Devil Judge Rewatch Ep 8 (Part 1)
We're halfway through the drama and this time, I just have to start from the end cause how can we ever forget this - the highlight of this episode.
The two of them on the bridge, looking in the same direction and finally standing side by side.
Tumblr media
Look at Yohan, how immensely satisfied he was like he had gotten what he wanted.
And to me, the next bit that Yohan says, I swear it is his wedding vow.
Tumblr media
Instead of the usual - in sickness and in health, in blah blah blah till death do us part. Yohan had instead promised revenge for Gaon's sake. And maybe you might think I'm twisted, but its just so much more better than the usual vow. Cause what better way to show your love than to swear that u will kill and destroy anyone who dare to make your spouse cry (and Gaon did cry a lot in this episode).
Reminds me so much of John Wick which is another series of movies I'm so in love with.
And now, we have Gaon's response that is like what a pair of lovers would say. How it's like the two of them together against the entire world.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Okay the photo above is doctored by me. It didn't happen in the drama and Gaon never said that two words - with you.
But I can't help creating a fake one cause it fits so well with what Gaon had said earlier. And sorry! For misleading you like this and to TVN as well.
And we have Yohan and Gaon staring at each other with so much emotions on their faces.
Tumblr media
They must MUST have kissed after this. It will be a sin if they hadn't. Not with the amount of tension between them.
The next bit, let's go back in time to another favourite scene of mine. Gaon walking out on Professor Min and choosing Yohan instead.
Tumblr media
And how in the world did Yohan do it? Arriving perfectly on time to pick up Gaon.
Did he make K watch and report to him from somewhere nearby. Or did he get Elijah to hack into every available CCTV in the area?
Tumblr media
Even Professor Min hadn't got the time to stand up yet.
And this, nothing more need to be said, except to feast our eyes on it.
Tumblr media
And going further back in time, we have a furious Gaon.
Tumblr media
Doing this in Yohan's office.
Tumblr media
It's just so sensual. The way he took Yohan's chair. Sitting there like he didn't give a damn that this is Yohan's seat of power - his throne in a way. And in the past, if Gaon were to do exactly that, he will have been beheaded for the affront he had caused.
And I love TDJ for the details they had put in. Just one little act - Gaon taking Yohan's chair and we know, he's about to go on an all-out confrontation with Yohan.
And it's just so hot and sexy having Gaon sitting in Yohan's chair. Taking over Yohan's personal space like he had the right to own it. And I like to imagine Yohan and Gaon, doing something more in that seat that is now shared equally between the two of them.
Have reached my photo limit again and see u in Ep 8, Part 2.

[!] N.Flying’s Lee Seung Hyub joins Kim Hye Yoon and Byun Woo Seok in new fantasy romance drama
Tumblr media
N.Flying’s Lee Seung Hyub has been cast in tvN’s upcoming drama “Carry Sun Jae and Run” (literal translation)! On July 31, FNC Entertainment officially announced that Lee Seung Hyub would be appearing in “Carry Sun Jae and Run” in the role of Baek In Hyuk. Based on the popular web novel “The Best of Tomorrow,” “Carry Sun Jae and Run” is a new fantasy romance drama about a top celebrity who tragically meets his demise and a woman who travels to the past in order to save him. The drama will be penned by Lee Si Eun, the writer of “True Beauty” and “Top Star U-Back.” Lee Seung Hyub will be playing Baek In Hyuk, the leader and guitarist of the band Eclipse. A friendly guy who is easy to get along with, Baek In Hyuk is the closest friend of the titular Ryu Sun Jae (played by Byun Woo Seok). As someone who has always been passionate about music, Baek In Hyuk was in a band starting all the way back in high school, and his 19-year-old self winds up crossing paths with Im Sol (Kim Hye Yoon), who travels to the past in order to save Ryu Sun Jae. Notably, Lee Seung Hyub is also the leader of his band N.Flying in real life, making him the perfect fit for the role. Are you excited to see Lee Seung Hyub in this new drama?

here’s a short recap of abortion situation in poland if you missed it: prior to 2020, poland had one of the strictest abortion laws in europe, allowing the procedure only in cases of severe fetal abnormalities, threats to the woman's life, or pregnancies resulting from rape or incest. however, in october 2020, the polish constitutional tribunal ruled that performing abortions due to fetal abnormalities was unconstitutional, effectively banning the procedure in most cases. following the ruling, abortion is now legally permitted in poland only in cases where the woman's life or health is at risk, or when the pregnancy is the result of a criminal act. this has made access to safe and legal abortions extremely limited for polish women, leading many to seek abortions abroad or perform it on their own with the help of a polish abortion rights group “aborcyjny dream team”.
now, onto the newest situation that has sparked national outrage. all of the information i used to write this post come from various polish news sources which i tried to translate into english. on tuesday (july 18th 2023) , "fakty tvn" (a polish television news program known for reporting current events and news stories) aired a segment that revealed the controversial intervention of the police in the case of joanna that had happened 3 months ago. in an interview with a journalist, joanna explained that she decided to take abortion pills due to health risks. when she started feeling unwell, she immediately informed her doctor who informed the emergency services. upon the arrival of the police at her apartment, joanna was taken by an ambulance to the hospital, accompanied by a police car.
a doctor from the emergency department described the situation surrounding joanna's case. he mentioned that four men were guarding the frightened woman, creating a barrier that hindered the work of the medical staff. the doctor did not receive a clear answer as to why the police were detaining the patient. joanna recalled that the word "crime" was repeatedly mentioned. at one point, she noticed that her laptop had disappeared. in a recording provided by an employee of the emergency department, the doctor can be heard intervening regarding joanna's computer. the police officer stated that it had been "secured for evidence" and requested not to interfere with their actions. the doctor considered calling the police, but one of the officers pointed out that an unjustified call to the police is an offense. joanna emphasized that the doctors at the emergency department stood up for her, stating that there was no need for the police to continue their involvement as she posed no threat. however, she continued to be questioned about her phone and laptop, which left her terrified and constantly in tears.
the police ran a make on the present doctors, and joanna was transported with police escort to another hospital with a gynecological department. another patrol was already present there, and an additional one was called. joanna was also forced to hand over her phone. she repeatedly told the police that no one helped her in performing abortion and that she had ordered the pills online. she said, "the word 'abortion' triggered almost a manhunt."
joanna also described what happened after she was referred to the second hospital. she explained that she was transported to the gynecological ward in an ambulance with sirens on. she didn't understand why she was taken to the gynecological department since the medical abortion she had performed did not pose a threat to her health and did not require that level of care.
she also confirmed that two policewomen appeared on the scene and ordered her to undress, do squats, and cough. this was the most difficult and humiliating moment for her, as she felt completely unprotected and stripped of her dignity. she complained that she could no longer count on the privacy protection from the doctors.
she recounted, "i undressed, except for my underwear because i was still bleeding, and it would have been too humiliating for me. they then told me to remove my underwear as well. that's when i shouted at them, 'what do you want from me? i was just examined by a gynecologist.'"
the spokesperson for the małopolska (province in southeastern poland) police, inspector sebastian gleń, stated that they received a report from a psychiatrist who informed them that their patient had undergone an abortion and expressed suicidal intentions. they provided the woman's address, leading to the dispatch of an ambulance and a police patrol.
joanna admitted that her call to the doctor may have sounded dramatic, but she assured them that she had no intention of harming herself. the doctor from the emergency department she was admitted to stated that a mere drop in mood is not a reason to call the police. according to him, if that were the case, half the country would require police assistance.
the police admitted that their intervention was based on article 152, not to protect joanna from suicide but on the assumption that someone must have helped her with the abortion. (article 152 of the polish penal code relates to the criminalization of assisting in the termination of pregnancy)
joanna did not break the law since, as ruled by the court, self-induced abortion is not prohibited in poland. she assured the police that she ordered, paid for, and took the abortion pills on her own, but her explanations were not taken into account. the doctor from the emergency department, where joanna was treated, stated, "she was in a rather difficult psychological situation, and when leaving our department she was in an even worse state."
professor adam bodnar, former polish commissioner for human rights, commented on the situation, saying: "it is extremely shocking that a doctor who found himself in this situation says, 'i have a patient, and you are taking away her phone and laptop.' he accuses the police officers themselves of violating the law, and they respond, 'and what can you do to us?' this shows the reality we live in." according to him, the police abused their authority.
terminating a pregnancy is not a crime in poland, and the police had no grounds to confiscate the computer and phone. currently, there is an ongoing investigation in the prosecutor's office regarding aiding abortion, but for three months since the dramatic incident, no charges have been filed against anyone.
the court, while considering the complaint about the confiscation of the phone and ordering its return, reminded the police that joanna was neither a suspect nor was there any basis to press charges against her. in poland, women are not penalized for having an abortion. the law does not punish women. joanna concluded her statement by saying, "this police intervention completely broke me. it destroyed me." the commissioner for civil rights also took up the case.
“i fight for my rights for myself, for restoring a sense of justice, but i make all of this public for other women” says joanna.

I swear I am slowly getting out of a kdrama slump thanks to Our Blooming Youth, but also because of The Heavenly Idol that genuinely feels like a 2013 drama that tvn had accidentally lost in their vaults until now and was probably first written as a self-insert idol fanfiction... and yes this show is as delightfully over the top, camp and stupid as that kinda sounds.
Because what else could a drama about a vaguely biblical... but not biblical, deity or heavenly being from another realm that get’s transformed to an idol in South Korea by THE EVIL ONE that then has the super fan of the idol that he transformed to is now his manager (which just screams fanfiction to me) and he will most likely start a romance with because this is a kdrama.
Like how coud this not be anything other then just delightfully stupid. I for one am so glad that despite all the slick, high budget dramas that we are getting these days that we are still getting kdramas like these... because this drama genuinely makes my day. It’s just so freaking silly.
But it’s also sort of earnest in it’s approach which I actually do find super charming and I also just love stupid but earnest shows. And I do think The Heavenly Idol is very fun. I am having a great time watching it and just chuckling and the stuff that the plot keeps throwing at us on this wild ass ride that these 4 episodes has been.
But there are also these little critiques on the idol industry and fan worships and how fans give the idols gifts, or other people gifts on the behalf of their idols that this former deity get’s his powers from now because they are ‘tributes’ and then the evil entertainment producer that is THE EVIL ONE and is turning everyone against him and just making people evil. His main rival on this entertainment show that he is on is now so evil that he has grown horns... it’s just bonkers. AND he keeps healing people with his singing... because you know why not he is a deity... and now some grim reapers or something are after him. It’s just all so silly and fun and I can’t get enough.
Like this drama, if aired in like 2017 would get like at most 3% rating but would become quite popular on tumblr or something because it’s just so silly. I remember us with I’m not a robot and are you human? Those dramas got popular here but absolutely tanked in South Korea.
I can’t wait for next week to see just what else this drama can come up with because lmfao
