Last week, I wrote a post here about the morbid shyness of a certain music manager.

My text was based on an interview Caitríona gave in mid-February 2018, shortly after her so-called 'engagement' and after she'd just won the Irish IFTA for her work on Outlander.

In the interview, Caitríona talked about how she met her fake fiancé. In the February 2018 version, Caitríona met her PA through one of her best friends.

So I decided to look into the subject of this "best friend" who brought the unfortunate music manager to Caitriona.

What I'm going to write today is, I think, 100% obvious to veterans of the fandom. But for those just starting out, I hope it'll be news. And I, well, I'm somewhere in the middle, between newbie status and more than three years of wading through the facts and the myths.

For me, the fun part has been reconstructing the chronology of events. The dates are interesting.

The beginning of my story is quite surprising. Because we reach Caitríona's 'best friend' by clicking on a link in an article published in 'People Magazine' on 15 August 2019.

The article is entitled: 'Everything to Know About Caitriona Balfe's Super Private Relationship with Husband Tony McGill' and it tells us that: 'the couple tied the knot in England last weekend'.

What excellent investigative journalists People Magazine have (bravo, bravo!), that in a twelve sentence article they could link to a post from Donal Brophy's Instagram.

And look at this description:

"It’s unclear exactly when Balfe and McGill started dating, but the earliest evidence of their romance dates back to 2015, when a friend posted a video of her sitting on his lap at a bar in Ireland on Instagram. (McGill was not tagged and does not appear to have any social media accounts of his own.)"

Isn't that brilliant work from Starz/TPTB/whatever's PR Dept?

*** **** *** From the above it seems fair to conclude that the 'best friend' who brought Caitriona bad luck in the form of an unfulfilling music manager was Donal Brophy, because who else could it be?

And now, let's take a quick look at the Instagram post (dated 1 January 2015) linked to the 'People Magazine' article. We all know it, of course! Here is the irrefutable proof of the passion between our two lovebirds: the rhythmic (and how sexy!) patting on the hip.

Well, hip-slapping is boring (and not at all sexy).

Far less boring, however, is the look on the music manager's face, the look that seeks Donal's approval (tell me I'm patting her well, do tell!). Could it be that, like the People Magazine link, this video was made to show? I wouldn't rule it out.

*** *** *** Now let's talk about dates: the sexy (not 🤢) slap on the hip was posted by Donal with a date of 1 January 2015, but two days earlier, on 30 December 2014, Donal shared another photo on Instagram featuring both the hapless music manager and Caitríona. ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Perhaps the decidedly less seductive and sensual appearance of the 'fiancée' in the December photo was the deciding factor in "People Magazine" not publishing a link to it?

It certainly wasn't love at first sight. The new boyfriend seems rather tired of Caitriona's presence. 😉

I know this is a mischievous conclusion. I am so, so sorry, my friends.

But one thing is for sure: Donal is an old friend of Caitríona.

I haven't done too much in-depth research, but the oldest photo I've been able to find of both Caitríona and Donal is… a photo in a Flickr album belonging to Caitríona's ex-boyfriend, Dave Milone. The photo is dated… 2002.

You get the idea - Caitríona's ex (and real) boyfriend, Dave, Donal, and after many, many years a new 'fiancé'. It feels like my brain is exploding. 🤯🤯🤯

Autopsy of a gay lie: the Wikipedia trail

For starters, sorry for the length and numerous screencaps. It is an investigation, after all and these are sorely needed.

Never underestimate the conjugated power of Internet, a Sunday afternoon and the lightbulb moment that can happen while baking something, because you know, people have also to reward themselves at some point.

I might have fucked up my foolproof Lemon Squares recipe, but I regret nothing. It took me three hours I could have gratefully used to finish that spirits post, but this is too damn good not to share.

Remember Meow Kabob's cross my heart and hope to die pinky swear she found confirmation of Data Lounge's allegations on Wikipedia, out of all places? How she regularly unburies that infamous screenshot listing S under the Wiki "Gay Actors" category? How she told us, filthy and uneducated shipper mob, over and over again, that story about STARZ people scouring the Internet far and wide and scrubbing any gay reference related to S, as soon or shortly after he was cast as JAMMF?

I can confidently prove now Lincoln's perennial truths I quoted above apply to this situation.

I was just pouring my lemon juice, eggs, flour and sugar mix over the hot and nutty shortbread when I stopped in my tracks: 'wait a second, isn't Wikipedia an open source project? BUT OF COURSE IT IS, SILLY COW - yes, I very often talk to myself like that. RUN. NOW. I HAVE TO KNOW.'

Sure enough, like death and taxes, the full edit list of S's Wikipedia page was there for everyone to see:

This is how Sam's Wikipedia odissey started, on November 11th 2007, when he was the complete underdog:

How could an American woman, who appeared in this fandom shortly afterwards, have known about changes operated for five days only, by an unknown user, on the open source webpage of a B-listed British actor?

I have only one question, Your Honor:

WHY?

Frustrations and Fuck the Fans

Sorry, I did put out a blog about the lack of info, filming schedule and information about 7B- brain fog hit me hard and I actually meant Season 8 - the last season, ever…..thank you for correcting me, much appreciated xx

But it still stands, the list of my complaints being that Sam, the one-man PR machine, is churning out the usual stuff - how pleased he is that BOMB is in production, advice to the new batch, how it felt going for his final fitting, how Caitriona is working towards her directing debut, blah, blah.

We, here in the UK, have not been given a transmission date for 7B - but it’s a moot point as Netflix, who it was reported would pick up from Starz, has not confirmed they will show it and not when!

It feels like we Outlander veterans are being truly used. No dates, no streaming company, no fucks given. They will expect us to transfer our loyalty to BOMB but won’t give us anything regarding our true loves!!!

Well count me out peeps, I won’t watch BOMB - I really won’t!

I obviously don't think he has to be online 24/7 so as not to be forgotten, it doesn't make sense and his job isn't even one that requires this of him. However, I think that his agent and his team are doing a poor job and should do much more. They didn't profit in the slightest by taking advantage of the hype that rwrb would bring.

I know the strike wasn't expected, but Nicholas for example was able to capitalize on the popularity due to the film with two projects he's promoting now that he's made post rwrb and his name is everywhere thanks to it. They should have done something similar too, he should be super busy by now thanks to the popularity of that movie and maybe for me it's more important what he does than how he uses social media (no hate, I just think his team should do more better)

To be honest, I wasn’t sure I was going to post and answer your ask. There is something quite bizarre about posting something I disagree with entirely on my blog. But I’m still going to try if I can manage to answer this clearly and quickly (spoiler: it’s not quick) and if I like my answer enough. If you’re reading this, I guess I’ve managed to do it somehow.

I don’t know if you know, but people have been coming to my inbox to talk about the bad job agent and PR team were doing since 2019 or 2020. Do you know who they were talking about back then? Timothée Chalamet. Since the guy is having a pretty decent career so far, I'm guessing wasn't so bad after all. So even if I’m not comparing Taylor to Timothée, because no one can be compared to Timothée right now, you’ll understand that I’ve already learned that they aren’t many experts around here. But the thing that came off all of the talks back then is: you might not like what you see (or don’t see) but it doesn’t mean they’re doing a bad job. 

Secondly, there is still no point of comparing one people to another or to ask of someone to be more like someone else or do the same kind of things as someone else. Nick and Taylor are different people, at different stages of their careers, with different careers and backgrounds, and certainly with different aspirations and needs so wishing the people around them would have done "something similar" is a bit of a non sense for me. They’re doing the same job and worked on the same movie but it doesn’t mean they should follow similar path. To carry on with the Chalamet example, I don’t see people going around blaming Calah Lane for not being Timothée Chalamet, Hugh Grant or Olivia Colman yet after the success of Wonka. It doesn't make sense.

Thirdly, you got some your dates wrong. Nick is actually capitalizing on projects he did before rwrb right now. To be fair, he’s probably more capitalizing on freaking Cinderella than anything else at the moment. He does that beautifully but it’s really something he’s been building up from way longer than the last 7 months or so. And yes, Starz was probably delighted to see his popularity explode during the summer with RWRB and Bottoms but it means they got a few more bucks for promotion and a few more interviews requests. It didn't give the actual job to Nick. And well, all respect to Nick but I’m pretty sure Anne Hathaway and Harry Styles would have make all the buzz around pre-premiere The Idea of You all by themselves. Nick did bring most of the enthusiastic cheerleaders to the premiere but his impact on the movie and how much he can capitalize will come after the release of the said thing. For now, the project and the lead are bigger than him.

I know some people will only read half of my words but I’m obviously not diminishing any of Nick’s work or talent. He’s very talented and is doing amazingly and I’m both very happy and proud to see him shine but some of the things I read about him are clearly lacking of perspective in the grand scheme of things.

So far, post-RWRB actually brought very similar things to Taylor and Nick actually: invitations to a shit loads of fancy parties and both apparently working on unknown projects we know nothing about. (And delicate talks about a potential sequel).

People also needs to understand that Taylor’s career in movies has started in 2020. He’s a freaking baby. And since covid killed most of the impact TBK could have had and the his sister died of cancer and then the strikes happened, half of the years since 2020 doesn't really count. Thinking where he is now isn’t already huge giving the circumstances (and everything else we’ve already talked about here) is madness. And we actually don't know what his team is doing right now. Might be a poor job. Might be ok. I have no clue.

God I hate what you made me do. I might regret answering it for all the people who will read this and find nothing better to write that something like "there is this Tumblr blog saying Nick owes all of his success to Camila Cabello and Harry Styles and that he did nothing compared to TZP, imagine the delulu 💀" but yeah.

TLDR; (not specifically for you, Nonny. Just some general thoughts with way less words)

Stop comparing artists. Stop comparing people all together.

Stop asking middle schooler to be high schooler.

Stop thinking high schooler is worth more than the middle schooler because they’re in high school. They’ve been doing that student thing for way longer, it’s normal.

Stop thinking you’re the only target audience of PR work. You’re already obsessed, they doesn’t need to get you on board.

Stop thinking movies are made from scratch to finish in 5 months. Scripts go around for years. People are casted, then leave projects because pre-production takes forever, because there isn’t enough money and then other people are casted and pre-production starts again, and things get delayed and everything takes a freaking long time (and even more luck) to actually happen.

Having too much expectations will kill the fun eventually. Wait for things to happen. Go play video games or something in the meantime. I don’t know.

(I’m not sure what I’ll do with the follow up of this conversation. I’ll read everything but I might not answer to most. I’m not sure).

January 1st 2023 New years Day was spend in London with his friends, the Nics, MN and Sarah, Big Red and fiancée.

January 5th he posted a video announcing MPC partner for 2023 and a Live IG on January 9th. (video is recorded in December 2022 in NYC)

January 6th Wedding of Graham McT and Garance at Borthwick Castle where GMT also celebrated his Birthday (Jan. 4th). More pictures were posted later on

Meanwhile buzz is spreading, some of the actors wrapped on filming OL, while others and extras clearly are still working. S was clearly still filming on 14 February. The driver posting the last week and Sophie's trailer getting removed on February 23. Word got out that on February 24th there's a wrap party, and a thank you for the extras

22 February he recorded a podcast for the Scotsman food and drink at the Ubiquitous Chip in Glasgow (also see below, March 3rd)

24 February the wrap of S7 is officially announced, we get an overload of BTS and lots and lots of pictures, videos and other footage and a bonus of the wrap party which was at the Platform, or better known in Glasgow as The Arches.

1 March he shows up at the Stravaigin in Glasgow, apparently for some PR for his booze by several influencers

3 March the new episode for the Scran_podcast for Scotsman food and drink is announced and released the next day.

4 March S was at Chichester doing a Q&A for students,

Apparently he went from Chichester to London as he was papped on March 6 and posted a selfie, working out on March 8th at the Soho hotel. Another fanpic was posted a week later and a video of him running in London was discovered.

On 11 march he was revealing his 'Sassenach Scrambler' at the Scottish Bike Show in Edinburgh. A fanpic at the venue

A fan spotted him at the airport in Brussels on March 17th, apparently stayed the week or days before in Belgium and was heading to London though didn't know what his end destination was.

23 March, a teaser and the release date for OL S7 was announced.

25 March Charley McEwen posted a selfie with S. Since PCJ is in London as well, it's quite certain that the LA promo was recorded around this date.

29 March the 'new project' he hinted about on a podcast is finally revealed. The Couple Next Door will be filmed in Leeds and Belgium. He posted a birthday video for Dries Vos the same day, saying it was his first day on set for CND.

Sam has bad luck, all his fans are too old

The PR team made attempts to market Sam to a young segment and it didn't work

I agree with you Anon. If you look at the women attending the panel at NYCC you'd be hard pressed to find one attending who is under the age of 45. Starz essentially kept him single and childless all for the likes of 'horny grannies' who fund his every venture.

Have you seen what happens to Chris Evans from his female fans, since there were pictures with his girlfriend. He said in an interview a few months ago, that he is single and now it seems he has a girlfriend since over a year. He got a lot of harassment from fans, they told him he is a liar. That sounds so familiar to Sam‘s Situation.

No, I haven't been following this, I'm already more than satisfied with this fandome.

But apart from that, the situation is not really comparable, because Chris Evans is mainly known for the Marvel movies and thus he has both female and male fans. Most people who go to the cinema and watch his movies probably don't care if he is single, taken, married or whatever. The target audience is completely different.

Sam has been marketed as a "Jamie Fraser type" from the beginning, even as a private person, by everyone - Starz, Lionsgate, Sony, his PR, etc. And as a result, his audience is predominantly female. I.e. as long as he is in OL and as long as he is marketed as this "guy", his strong dependence on female fans will not change. Only when he manages to convince or star in a film that also appeals to the male target group will this perhaps change. Bloodshot was a good start (apart from the fact that the film itself was rather mediocre, I found his performance very good and completely different from JAMMF), Everest would also have been a good possibility.

But that aside, I've never been able to comprehend what difference it makes to a female fan if Sam is single or not. We live in reality, not fairy tales, and the fact that someone actually has hopes of being able to have a relationship with him is scary, if not dangerous to some extent.

Doing their jobs

You know, Cait & Sam are just doing their jobs. They paid their dues and came up thru the ranks to follow their career interests. Now it’s paying off for them: Nominations, awards, recognition, fame, fortune, respect, opportunities. It’s taken awhile and hasn’t been easy. For a minute, imagine their thrill when they landed plum lead roles in a cable series with a built-in fan base of thousands, with recognized industry producers and directors. They were both single, living away from family where they grew up. Sam moved back to Scotland where his mom and brother lived and where he was raised. Cait moved across the Irish Sea from her previous home, before living elsewhere and in LA, to a Gaelic country in the UK. They had meaty roles and lotsa opportunities to show off their acting abilities. They worked for Sony and Starz and had access to PR, agents, publishers, stylists unlike before. On top of all this, the stars aligned. They may have resisted the cliche of falling for the other romantic lead at first. Eventually there was no denying how deeply and strongly they felt for each other. When they were in their bubble together, fireworks exploded. The were also in the midst of a media cyclone with the popularity of Outlander’s first season. They helped each other stay strong and grounded. They slowly merged families, friends, fundraising, causes, interests, free time, previous connections and work friends. They shared their loves for the environment, children, animals, traveling, art, film & theatre, adventure, music, foods. They were both in their 30s and shared dreams of travel, health, wealth, and children. Somehow, Sam & Cait created magic on screen and gave us glimpses of a personal relationship built of love, respect, and fun affection behind the scenes too. We all ate it up. IMO nothing has changed. Focus on the love. Focus on the positive magic these two create. It’s palpable. The rest is all BULLSHIT. We are the loyal followers who have reveled in their connection from early on—we see it, we respect it, we get it. The Narrative is annoying, but it isn’t directed towards us. “I suggest you ignore it.” It’s business, plain and simple. SC are for sale to the highest bidder and they’re dealing with it in the best way they can. They’re both developing other businesses, other interests for both financial and personal freedom. Once their obligations to Outlander end, we will get a glimpse of a liberated SC (and maybe their wee secrets). Not naive here, Ladies, it’s just business. I don’t take any of the BS seriously or personally. Peace 💕❤️💗💋

Anyway keep this in mind.  The 7 season contract is NOT over.  No matter how much we fans want them to admit what we already KNOW, it won't happen until the 7 season contract is up, or by some miracle TPTB  change their minds and see the error of their ways.  I, for one, wish Sam and Caitriona  all the best, because none of this is easy for them.  I saw them the Thursday interview (pure joy) and then the Friday IFH were it looked like someone died (Jan. 2016).

I've been very busy over the last few days (well, weeks), so I haven't been on Tumblr much. So, frankly, I don't know if there was any discussion here before New Year's Eve about Outlander_Starz's controversial post on Instagram called "In Memoriam" (...To everyone we lost this year, you will be missed. Well, some of you...).

*** *** *** Maybe I'm very old (eh, no, I'm not) or very conservative (no, no, I'm not conservative at all), but I'm not amused by "In Memoriam" for rapist and murderer Allan Christie or rapist and murderer Richard Brown. Sure, Outlander is fiction, literary and cinematic, but even in fiction, characters shouldn't be given altars if they were (fictional) bad people, should they? Has the person who is in charge of these hopeless posts on Instagram even read the plot of Outlander? Does that person take the audience seriously? Or is he or she just a kid/an intern/a casual volunteer messing around to promote and advertise Outlander_Starz? *** *** ***

On this side of the fandom, we are convinced that Sam and Caitríona are controlled by psychopathic marketing and PR profiteers who, in order to maximise their benefits, have decided that a married Sam will not sell well, let alone Caitríona who is madly in love with Sam. Most of the time, the marketing and PR for Sam and Caitríona is hopelessly naive and incoherent. But aren't these marketing and PR professionals just idiots? They are just plain fools. They are stupid. They don't understand anything. They don't get the basics. And on top of that, they don't love, they're not loved, they don't have families, they don't give a damn about values and ethics.

The Fraser family, separated by a chasm of 200 years, was the 'In Memoriam' post that saddened me the most.

We know if S&C were together, the PTB would love the PR. So I’m curious. What “reason” do shippers give that those powers would want to hide it? Makes no sense.

They've given lots of reasons throughout the years, none of which make any sense.

But the two main ones are: 1. that Starz/Sony have a "no fraternizing" rule that prevents any actors on Outlander from being romantically involved. As a result, Sam and Cait have had to hide their relationship and 5 children all this time. 🙄

The DEBUNK on that is that NO studio has dictated actors' dating lives since circa 👇

2. Starz/Sony sold the "Sam is single" narrative to attract female followers who could then fantasize that Sam was available to them and ready to mingle with fans. 🙄

The DEBUNK on that is: Outlander is the epic love story of an epic couple... and women love that shit. Case in point, in the beginning of Outlander, we ALL wanted Sam and Cait to be a real couple. And Cait being with Sam in real life would NOThave deterred any fan from still fantasizing about Sam. Just like ALL the male actors out there who have significant others and women still swoon over them. Cait and Sam being together in real life AND WITH children would have been PR gold, and Diana Gabaldon would be writing Outlander volume 15 right now, trying to keep up with the demand. JS. 😊
