I'm still mad about the bastardization of psychological terms, and I saw a post earlier that inspired me to expand upon it. Here's a quick guide on what certain psychological terms do and do not mean, from someone with an education in psychology, not that you need one to know and understand this. I am open to additions and corrections.
Important note for if this post gets noticed: I am making blanket statements. I do not care if your abuser was "actually a diagnosed narcissist." That is irrelevant and meaningless to the purpose of this post, which is to help prevent the spread of misunderstandings, negative stigma, and the watering-down of important terms.
Psychotic refers to a person who has delusions or hallucinations, or otherwise is in a state of mind where they cannot determine reality. Psychotic does NOT mean: dangerous, emotionless, unkind, nonsensical. Someone who is mean or callous is not psychotic. A person you find strange is not psychotic.
Delusions are beliefs that either have no evidence of being true or actively contradict reality. A delusion can be believing you are under constant surveillance, that you have died, that you never existed at all, that you are a powerful or religious figure, etc. Delusional does not mean: wrong, strange, unintelligent. Someone who likes something you think is bad is not delusional. A person who holds a belief you don't understand is not delusional.
Unprofessional Aside: Stop saying "delulu." It's embarrassing.
Schizophrenia is a mental disorder generally characterized by repeated episodes of psychosis. Schizophrenia is more complicated than I can responsibly describe in the space of this post. People are schizophrenic. Objects and concepts cannot be schizophrenic. Disorganized, chaotic, and hard to understand are not the same as schizophrenic. People with schizophrenia are not: dangerous, inhuman, completely incoherent, unable to function*.
Narcissism is a personality disorder generally characterized by an exaggerated sense of uniqueness and a need for external validation or admiration. Narcissists may have little or no empathy. There is no such thing as narcissistic abuse. Abuse performed by a diagnosed narcissist is still normal abuse**. Someone who is mean, selfish, or unaware is not a narcissist. Someone who wants attention is not a narcissist. Someone who takes pride in their achievements or appearance is not a narcissist.
Empathy is the ability to feel other people's emotions. Empathy is not the same thing as kindness, nor is it a prerequisite for kindness. People with diminished empathy are not: callous, emotionless, selfish. Diminished empathy is not a flaw. It does not make someone incapable of understanding people or forming relationships.
ASPD is a personality disorder generally characterized by diminished empathy and disregard for others. People with ASPD may display reckless behavior or aggression. This does not mean they are: dangerous, irredeemable, uniquely awful, deserving death.
Psychopathy and sociopathy are contested terms. They are sometimes used to mean ASPD, but they are not diagnoses. Definitions vary wildly. Sometimes they are used as synonyms of each other, sometimes they are distinguished. I do not know if there is a consensus on what these words mean and would appreciate further input.
Intrusive thoughts are unpleasant, uncontrollable thoughts that can revolve around violence, murder, self-harm, suicide, sex, bigotry, and any other subjects the thinker finds taboo or unwelcome. An intrusive thought is something you don't WANT to do or don't WANT to think about. Getting angry and wanting to express your anger by punching the wall is not an intrusive thought. Wanting to dye your hair a weird color is not an intrusive thought. The key factor of an intrusive thought is that one has no desire to think or act upon it. An intrusive thought can sometimes develop into an obsession.
OCD or obsessive-compulsive disorder is characterized by obsessions (persistent, unpleasant thoughts, such as getting sick, loved ones dying, making sexual advances on someone, etc.) and compulsions (routines usually meant to cope with or "prevent" the subject of the obsession, such as skin-picking, repeating actions, hand washing, etc.). People with OCD may be aware of the irrationality but awareness does not automatically lead to prevention; telling someone with OCD that they are irrational is not helpful. A desire for completeness, satisfaction, organization, or cleanliness is not the same thing as OCD.
If you are not an educated psychologist or psychiatrist acting in a clinical setting from an objective perspective, you cannot diagnose anyone. If you have any interest at all in helping mentally ill people, you will learn what words mean and use them correctly. I'm tired and angry so if I've made mistakes I am BEGGING people to let me know.
*As I said at the beginning, these are all blanket statements. This statement is referencing the idea of the "padded cell," or that all schizophrenics are fundamentally incapable of having a place in society and must be locked away. There do exist schizophrenics who need high levels of support, and that is not what I was referring to. They and all other people who depend on external support for any reason are not lazy or worthless.
**People argue that symptoms of NPD influence the way in which an abuser hurts people. That does not mean narcissistic abuse exists. The disorder doesn't matter; the person would still be abusive without it.

Biden's Title IX proposal draws criticism in LGBTQ community
Some LGBTQ advocates this week slammed the Biden administration’s proposed revision to Title IX, accusing the president of backtracking on his commitment to protecting transgender young people.
The proposal, released Thursday by the Education Department, would prohibit the adoption of policies that “categorically” ban transgender athletes from school sports teams consistent with their gender identity, rebuking broad bans that have been implemented by 20 states, and counting.
But K-12 schools under the administration’s proposal would still have the leeway to limit transgender athletes’ participation in sports if they determine that including them will undermine competitive fairness or increase the risk of sports-related injuries, a senior Education Department official said Thursday.
“The proposed regulation would give schools flexibility to identify their own important educational objectives,” rather than adopt a one-size-fits-all approach, the official said on a call with reporters.
LGBTQ Americans and their allies have had mixed reactions to the administration’s proposed changes. While some are celebrating the possibility of a new federal civil rights law prohibiting laws that bar transgender students from participating in school sports, others say the proposal is a disappointing departure from prior actions and statements made by the Biden White House in support of equal rights for transgender people.
“State lawmakers take note — discriminating against transgender athletes is wrong and a violation of federal law. This new rule makes that abundantly clear,” said Kelley Robinson, President of the Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest LGBTQ advocacy group.
Robinson added, however, that the new rule should be updated to clarify that “all transgender students should be presumed eligible to participate in sports consistent with their gender identity.”
“The Biden Administration framed their proposal as a ban on blanket discrimination against trans athletes. But actually it provides guidelines for how schools and universities can ban trans athletes legally,” Imara Jones, the founder and chief executive of TransLash Media, said Friday.
“It’s hard to have a ‘middle ground’ when it comes [to] supporting human rights for trans people, and I can’t see how Joe Biden can straddle the fence here,” she said.

Set for Two
The worst thing about a breakup was the distance. Not that he was too far away, but that you were so damn close. You were trapped on a ship with your ex, and the only place you could be certain you wouldn’t see his face was your own room. 
You didn’t want Zoro to know how hard you were taking the breakup. He could make an educated guess if he cared to, since you hadn’t left your room in two and a half days. But the walls were made of Adam wood, so at least the rooms were soundproof. You got some solace in knowing that he couldn’t hear you crying yourself to sleep every night, missing his presence in your bed that seemed too large for one person. 
The rest of the crew occasionally checked in on you. Courtesy checks of awkward and base level questions. You could tell they cared, but there wasn’t really anything they could do. You just wanted to lay in bed and mourn your loss for a few days, and then you would pick yourself up and be ready to face everyone. They tried to help in the best way they could, but you just wanted to be alone. Thankfully most of them understood that.
Sanji was different though. He brought you meals, snacks, and plenty of refreshments throughout the day. He would knock twice on your door to let you know something was waiting for you, and then leave a covered tray near your room for you to grab at your convenience. Sometimes you ate it, other times you didn’t touch it. He never commented on it, he just gave you a soft double knock to know he was there. 
On the evening of the third day, it was different though. The knock came twice, waited a beat, and then it came again. 
“Go away,” your voice was hoarse, raised just loud enough for it to go through the wooden door. 
“It’s me.” Sanji’s velvet voice came from the other side. It was the first time he spoke to you since he had started bringing you food, and you found yourself curious at the change in pattern from the cook. 
“Oh.” You paused, not sure what else to say. “You can come in, I guess.”
The door softly clicked open, and Sanji clicked on the light in your room so he could see better. You squinted against the harsh brightness and ducked under a blanket. You could hear a rolling cart of sorts being moved into your room and the soft click of Sanji’s shoes walking towards you. 
“Y/N,” Sanji spoke softly, now next to you. “Let’s get up, shall we? Let’s have dinner.”
“I’m not hungry.” You mumbled. 
“You didn’t eat lunch or your afternoon snack, so I know that’s a lie.”
As if on cue, your stomach betrayed you by emitting a groan of hunger. You peeked out of the covers slightly, trying to see what dish he had prepared tonight for you. But all you could see was him. 
Sanji smirked at you, knowing his point was proven. “Come on, shower before dinner. I still have to prepare it, so go get ready.”
“But-”
“I’m going to lock that stupid marimo in his training room. So go grab some fresh clothes, I’ll meet you back here in five minutes.”
He didn’t give you a chance to object. As soon as he was finished with his statement, he ran out the door, leaving you alone again. It had been a while since you had been in your room with the light on. As you looked around, you remembered why. Some of Zoro’s things were still strewn around the room. His tank tops, a random plant you bought him to see if he could actually take care of a living thing, a few resistance stretch bands for training. After your breakup you had locked yourself in here. There hadn’t been time for him to gather his stuff, and you hadn’t returned it yet. Your heart tightens seeing the remnants of your all's love here, so minor yet so obvious that you two are together. Were together. 
You tried to push the pain out of your mind, and walked over to your dresser to grab some new clothes. You were going to opt for more pajamas, but something told you to pick out something a little less depressing. You shuffled through your drawer, settling on a casual tank top and some comfortable shorts instead. You could still lay in bed with this outfit after, but it made you look a bit more presentable then you were currently. 
A two-rapped knock came from the door, and you gathered your clothes and your bath towel. Your stomach tangled into knots at the thought of seeing anyone right now, let alone walking through the entire ship up to the bathhouse. Just the thought made you feel so vulnerable, so exposed. So alone. 
The knock came again, and you were reminded that you weren’t alone. You had Sanji. You opened the door to see the blonde leaning against the door frame, a cigarette hanging from his mouth. 
He looked at you expectantly. “You ready?”
“Can I have a drag before I go?” You’re already reaching up for his cigarette, and you can see your question shocks him. You grab it before it falls from his mouth, and you put it to your lips. You inhale long and deep, letting the smoke fill your lungs. It soothes you in a way, and you understand why Sanji smokes so often. You exhale, giving a small cough as the smoke passes through your lips into the air between the two of you. Returning the cigarette to Sanji, you start towards the door without another word. Your heart clenches as you step out onto the deck, nervous of what you’ll find when you reach the outdoors. 
You hear Sanji’s footsteps behind you, and you relax a little knowing that he’s close behind. As you walk out, your eyes glance up to the crow's nest instinctually. There’s a chain wrapped around the entire outside of the building, which must be Sanji’s work. You can’t see Zoro, but you can hear music blasting from the area, which is enough proof that he’s in there training. That’s all he ever seemed to care about these days. There wasn’t a single thing or a single person that was more important than-
“Come on.” Sanji gently grabs your arm, nudging you to turn away from the crow’s nest. You hadn’t realized you had stopped to stare, and you’re thankful for his gentle guidance to bring you back to reality. Your cheeks flush, and you pray that Zoro wasn’t near a window to see you staring. 
Sanji looped his arms through yours and walked you up the stairs. He could sense your rigid muscles, tense with anxiety. “It was just for a second,” He muttered to you. “I’m sure nobody even noticed.” 
You glance around the ship, and see that he’s right. Most of the crew hadn’t even noticed you emerging from your room, let alone saw you gawking up at the crow’s nest. You saw Nami do a double take when she realized it was you as you ascended the stairs, but she went back to her work quickly, trying to appear normal. The rest of the crew were either oblivious or not on the deck.
You had arrived at the bath house, and Sanji pulled away from you. “Will you be okay returning to your room on your own, or should I wait here?” 
“I’ll be okay, thank you though.” With a nod, he departed, leaving you alone outside the door to the bath house. 
The water burned against your skin, breathing life back into your bones. You tried to focus on the now as your washed your body clean from the past few days of despair. But your shampoo didn’t smell right without the mixture of his. The water pressure felt harsh without his body next to yours. You could feel the tears starting to form, and you were thankful for the water washing away your tears, because you didn’t have the energy to wipe them yourself. 
You stood there until the water stopped scalding your skin, and then you stood there some more. It felt like you were frozen in time, incapable of moving away from these feelings. They were as deep and dark as the ocean, and you were sure you were going to drown. And then two knocks came from the other side of the door, bringing you back to the present once again. Sanji.  
“Everything okay?” His voice snapped you into action, and you quickly turned off the shower.
“Fine!” Your voice cracked as you called out, and you prayed he didn’t notice. You quickly dried yourself off and changed into your fresh pair of clothes as fast as possible. You looked at yourself in the mirror, wiping at your swollen eyes and combing through your half washed hair. It was the best you were going to get, so you put on a half-attempted smile and opened the door to meet him. 
If Sanji noticed your messy appearance, he didn’t comment on it. He didn’t mention how long you had stayed in the shower, or that he had to come get you. He simply smiled when he saw you, and held his arm out for you to take. You took it, and resisted the urge to glance back up at Zoro’s training room again. 
The deck was eerily quiet for it being such a lovely night, and you could see the sun was setting over the horizon. You paused for a moment, watching the colors shift and change with every second. 
“Do you want to stay and watch it?” Sanji’s looking at you, but you shake your head and turn away from the view to continue walking. Watching the sunset used to be something you and Zoro would do, a small moment that you had forced him to carve out in his training routine for you. Thinking about it now made you bitter; you always had to beg for his attention and his affection. You were never at the forefront of Zoro’s mind like he was at yours. 
As you arrive at your room, you can feel Sanji start to tense with nervous energy. “I hope you don’t mind,” he says, opening the door. “I tidied up a bit.”
Tidy was an understatement. Soft, twinkling lights now lined your ceiling. It was calming, much more manageable than your fluorescent overhead lights. Zoro’s things that had been scattered across the room were all gone from sight. Your bed sheets had been changed out for fresh linens. And in the corner of the room was a low dining table with two cushions and a small candelabra in the center of it.
You’re not sure how Sanji was able to do so much in such a little time. You’re about to ask him, but Sanji ushers you over to the table to sit you down, and then begins to serve you a spread of all of your favorite dishes. Some of the food you had never even commented on how much you loved it, and yet Sanji knew what you loved. Tears began to well up, overwhelmed with the sentiment he was showing you. 
“Thank you,” you gasped out, and you had to put a hand over your mouth to stifle a sob. Your reaction startled the cook, and he bent down to be at face level with you. 
“Hey, hey,” he rubbed your back, trying to get you to calm down. “Talk to me, what is it? What’s wrong?”
“Nothing, nothing!” you reassured him, wiping at your eyes. The tears were still flowing, and you felt a little embarrassed at your surge of emotion. “This is just so perfect. This is everything I’ve ever wanted.”
He laughed softly, relieved that you were okay. “You haven’t even tried the food yet, Y/N.”
Once he had placed the spread of food in front of you, he took his place at the seat across from you. You were about to take a bite when you realized his side of the table was empty. 
He noticed you looking at him. “This is just for you,” he clarified. “I already ate.”
“It’s a table made for two. Eat with me,” you begged. “Please?”
He couldn’t refuse your request, so he grabbed a small plate and picked a few small portions off one of the trays to nibble on while you ate. 
Every bite you had was better than the last. You let out a soft moan of pleasure with every bite. “God Sanji, you have to teach me how to cook like this.”
You see a flash of surprise cross his face at your comment. “I didn’t know you were interested in cooking.”
You laughed. It was the first time you had laughed in a few days, and it felt nice to have it come so naturally. “I used to do it all the time! I loved to cook before I joined the Sunny. Not all the time, and I wasn’t exceptionally good at it, but I could follow a recipe pretty well!”
“I’d love to have you in the kitchen whenever you want to join,” Sanji smiles at you, and you can tell he’s being genuine in his offer. 
Zoro never wanted you in the training room with him. You were always some kind of distraction for him. Even when you sat silently in the corner, you always felt like you were in the way. Even if Sanji was being genuine now, you weren’t sure he would feel that way once you actually were in his space with him. 
Sanji could see you slipping back into the past, and he speaks up again, trying to bring you back to him. “We can learn whatever recipe you want. I’ll write it down and we can follow it step by step.”
You look at him, surprised by his insistence on the topic. “Maybe we can start out with a dessert?” You offer. Those usually took less time than a full meal, so it would be easier for him to kick you out if he was having a bad time. 
“I have a great macaron recipe! We should do that!”
You scoff. “Aren’t those really advanced and difficult?”
He nods, with a grin still on his face and excitement in his eyes. “Yeah, but I’m certain you can do it! If not, then we can always try something else and work our way up to it.”
You nod and finish eating the spread he’s laid out for you. A bit of hope swirls inside you, mixing with the despair and sadness that lingered over the past few days. You always wrote Sanji off as a pervert cook, and now you were wondering how much of that ideology came from Zoro’s snide comments and disdain towards the man. Sanji was kind. He was attentive, and he cared about his crew. Him and Zoro were so alike and yet so different in the strangest of ways.
“Y/N,” he says, calling your attention back to him. He always knew when you were starting to slip away. “You deserve to be treated like royalty, you know.”
Your face must’ve held a shocked expression, because his face flushed red. “I’m not saying that person needs to be me.” His words tumbled quickly out of his mouth, rushing to explain. “But you do deserve it from someone.”
He begins to pick up the plates from in front of you, ignoring the glassy look in your eyes. You furiously wipe at your face, willing your eyes to dry. You’ve cried enough today, and yet you can't will yourself to stop. 
Sanji silently pours you a cup of tea - vanilla and chamomile, your favorite before bed. He sets it in front of you, and begins to take his leave. As he reaches the door, he looks back at you, still sitting where he left you. 
“Sleep well, my dear.” 
“Sanji?” You call to him. You’re still staring at the wall, your back to him. He can’t see your face, but he can hear your voice tremble slightly. 
“Hm?”
“Can you stay here tonight?” Your face is burning and you’re thankful that you're facing away from him. “I mean, can you lay with me until I fall asleep?”
Sanji hesitates for a moment. “I can stay all night - if you’d like me to.”
“I would.”
“Let me go put these dishes away and clean up, and then I’ll be right back here. Is that all right?”
You nod in response, and pick up the teacup in front of you to take a drink. The temperature is perfect, and it’s a perfect ending to the meal you’ve just eaten. You’d expect nothing less from Sanji. 
You suspect that even the teacup had been selected specifically for you, a decision that Sanji probably spent a half an hour on. He gave so much effort to show you how much he cared. It was such a foreign concept, you felt a little nauseous thinking about it. You deserve to be treated like royalty. The words rang in your ears still. Zoro had never given much effort in your relationship, but neither had you. Maybe if you had put in the effort that Sanji put in, maybe if you had been more understanding towards Zoro, then everything would have ended differently. You could feel tears spilling out of your eyes again, and you were ashamed that you were already crying again. 
Sanji didn’t bother to knock on the door before he entered this time, and he found you still staring at the wall, tears streaming down your face. The half-drank tea was still in front of you, cold now. You furiously wiped the tears from your eyes again, trying to act like nothing happened. Sanji looked down at you with a frown, but he didn’t comment on your current state. 
“Are you ready for bed?” He offered a hand to you as he asked. 
You took his hand and stood, walking to your bed. He pulled back the covers, motioning for you to get in, and you followed his silent instructions. 
He hesitates for a second at the edge of the bed, glancing around your room. “Are you sure you want my company? I don’t want…”
“Please.” You can’t hide the desperation that seeps out of your voice. You don’t want to be alone again.
He gingerly gets into bed next to you, giving you ample space to get comfortable. You close the gap between the two of you quickly, curling up into his side. You wrap your arms around his torso, eager for the warmth of another person’s body again. Your bed was made for two, and you feel more relaxed with him next to you. 
Sanji doesn’t comment when he feels his shirt grow wet with your tears. He just silently rubs your back and holds you until you fall asleep, feeling your breathing finally slow and become even. He keeps you close through the night, silently cursing that stupid Marimo for hurting you, and vowing that he’ll do everything he can to prevent you from feeling this pain ever again.

You feel yourself as not exactly an artist, but something close. A conoissuer of all things pure and beautiful in the world, an observer to the finer details of the media you consume, you can pick apart everything and reconstruct already existing concepts in your head with ease and daydreams, and not just with fiction.
At high levels, Creative Re-Assembly allows you to find joy in even the smalles of details, details you easily pick-up and reconstruct in your head thanks to your particular love for the visual arts. However, you'll also become something of a recluse, as the visual arts are just so pure and delightful that you can't waste time on others, conversations that don't involve your beloved media become pointless. At low levels, you struggle with object permanence.

Eloquence is key to delivering your truth effectively and in a dignified manner befitting someone considered to be worthy of the time of Nobility, granting you access to good breeding and manners, along with confidence in your speech and the knowledge to back it up.
At high levels, Eloquence will allow you insights and knowledge on the wider, educated world, along with a dignified and refined manner of conversing that makes people really listen. You will become a proud, honorable man, and your voice will become so proud and powerful that it will even be audible from all the way up your ass: where your head is most commonly situated. At low levels, you'll be a boorish negotiator and an unenlightened swine, unable to hold a conversation without resorting to multiple "likes", "umms", and "w-well, uhh-"s.

A killing game is a game nonetheless, and there is no greater tool to a performer's toolbelt than their ability to lie and immerse themselves in a world that cannot be. You yourself realize, maybe more than anyone, that this whole thing is a sham, a show, and not just the killing game. Everyone is always hiding their true selves.
At high levels, Jikko makes you a master of dramatics, capable of telling when others are lying with ease. High levels also make you an insufferable drama queen, making a mess out of anyone and everything just to keep the spotlight on you for that much longer, deny it all you want, but fame feels good. At low levels you'll have trouble picking out the most obvious lies apart, you cry when people tell particularly nasty yo mama jokes.

Physics Friday #3: No Seriously, why is 1+1 = 2? (and what a real number really is)
Refer to this link if you're confused as to what this is all about.
If you were wondering where my part 2 to the Dark Energy vs. Dark Matter post is, it'll come next week. I just wanted to divert for a bit and stick my head into mathematics. I generally won't do two parts back to back.

What is 1+1?
Why does it equal 2?
How can we say such a simple thing without falling into the depths of chaotic mathematical thinking?
What is a number?

Well, really to answer those questions directly. Mathematics, unlike a lot of other subjects, is founded on the principles of hard logic. Definitions and statements that derive new definitions and statements. Truth follows from more truth.
But in order to have true statements, some of those statements must given i.e. we just have to assume or declare they're correct. Otherwise we wouldn't have true statements to begin with!
Consider the logical statement "The sun is a star".
In order to prove that this statement is true, we need to:
Define the existence of an object called "the sun"
Define what a "star" is
Define what it means for an object to be "is" another object
We could then come up with these statements:
The sun exists
A star is a bright burning ball of gas
An object is something else when that object has the traits of that something else
But then we are faced with a problem: how do we know that the sun exists? Well, we can see it of course!
But this doesn't apply to maths - after all, can you see the number 1? Like, can you see the concept of the number 1?
The answer is that we have to just accept some statements as simply true, no questions asked. These statements are called axioms.
In any mathematical system, we have a set of rules, or axioms, that dictate how our system works.
In most cases, we say that 1 + 1 = 2 by definition. That the number 2 is purely defined by 1 + 1. Any properties it has, like 2 representing an amount of objects (cardinality), or 2 coming after 1 (ordinality) is merely coincidental, an aspect of the system itself, or entirely irrelevant.
Real Numbers
Let's start off with how we can play with these numbers, using the Reals and an example.
A real number is real simple. Here's some examples:

It's basically any number that you've dealt with before: decimals, fractions, integers, and the like.
But how did we get to this stage? Like how can we define the real numbers to mean a specific thing?
It's important to have such rigorous definitions in mathematics, because without them, we won't be able to generate new theorems about how our world works.
The real numbers are known as a complete ordered field. What that means is it has three properties:
A field describes a particular set of numbers with some simple arithmetic laws attached to them
A ordered set is one which as a notion of order
A complete field has no gaps
The Field axioms are as follows. A field is a set of numbers that/where:
Contains two non-equal numbers, 0 and 1
Has a definition for the + and × operators
For any number a:
- a + 0 = 0
- a × 1 = 1
- There exists a number (-a) such that: a + (-a) = 0
- There exists a number 1/a such that: a × 1/a = 1, unless a = 0
For any numbers a, b, and c:
- a + b = b + a
- a × b = b × a
- (a + b) + c = a + (b + c)
- (a × b) × c = a × (b × c)
- a × (b + c) = (a × b) + (a × c)

Pretty simple eh? Well there are actually quite a lot of things that are fields. For example the set of all rational numbers (fractions) are a field.
There's also the order axioms. An ordered set is a set of numbers that/where:
Has a definition of something being less than another or a < b
For any numbers a, b, and c:
- If a < b then a + c < b + c
- If a < b and b < c then a < c
- Either a = b or a < b or b < a exclusively
An example of one of these ordered sets is the integers!
Lastly we have the completeness theorem. The completeness theorem is a bit more complicated, and it might be worthwhile to spend a whole topic on it:
Say I were to define a new operation within this set. For example f(x) = a + b + x
A complete set, no matter the definition of the operator, would always evaluate to a number that remained within the set as long as no rules of the set were broken.
i.e. x can be any number, and f(x) can be any operation involving x. But if x and f(x) can be defined entirely by what we had originally, then f(x) will always equal a valid number given that we don't divide by zero.
The rational numbers, for example, is not complete. Here's a small proof:
Define the operator a^2 := a × a
Define the operator sqrt(a) as being sqrt(a)^2 = a
There does not exist a rational number that equals sqrt(2)
Therefore the rationals are not complete
It turns out that the real numbers is the only complete ordered field in existence. That by setting just these axioms, we can have a unique set of numbers.
So how does 1 + 1 come into this? Well, 2 is defined as being 1 + 1. And 1 + 2 = 3, and 1 + 3 = 4 ...
Here's an example proof for 2 + 2 = 4, the bane of all who know about Gregory Orsen's 1894:
2 + 2 = (1 + 1) + (1 + 1) = (1 + 1 + (1 + 1)) = 1 + 1 + 2 = 1 + 3 = 4
Note that these axioms leave out some rather important identities, like:
Any number times 0 is 0
0 = -0
0 < 1
-1 < 0
a < b implies 1/a > 1/b
But the whole point is that we don't need these statements to be axioms! We can prove these from the ones we already have alone!
Set Theory, Peano, & Recursive Addition
There are, of course, other ways to construct mathematical frameworks.
The real number axioms are an example of constructing a system by having a set of rules and then proving afterward that these rules produce a unique set of numbers.
But what if we wanted to go more general, and have numbers not defined by axioms, but have the axioms describe more general maths.
Well, there are several ways in which we can do this:
Set Theory Construction
Lambda Calculus Construction
Surreal Numbers
I'll mention only set theory. A set is something I've used before. What a set essentially is, is just a collection of things.
We can use sets to define numbers, for example:
0 := { } (i.e. the set containing nothing) 1 := { 0 } (i.e. the set containing, the set containing nothing) 2 := { 0, 1 } (i.e. the set containing, the set containing nothing, and the set containing the set containing nothing)
With this, we have numbers! It also comes with the added benefit of:
"The number of elements in a set corresponds with what each number means linguistically in terms of amount".
But what does this even do? Like what about addition?
Well, we can use what's known as a recursive definition to help us figure out what addition is. But first we need the notion of a successor.
Peano arithmetic, that is, arithmetic with integers, can be constructed from set theory by defining the immediate successor of a number:
S(n) = { n itself and every internal object within n }
We could then use this to redefine our numbers as:
0 := { } 1 := S(0) 2 := S(1)
This is very similar to our 1 + n example back in the real numbers.
From this, we can define what addition is using our recursive action:
For any numbers a and c a + S(c) := if c ≠ 0 then S(a) + c otherwise S(a)
This definition is recursive, as it contains itself. But in order to stop us from going infinitely into the negatives, we must stop the process when c reaches zero.
Here's two examples of our definition
1 + 1 = 1 + S(0) = S(1) = 2
2 + 2 = 2 + S(1) = S(2) + S(0) = 3 + S(0) = S(3) = 4
And thus we have that 1 + 1 = 2!
Conclusion
At last, we have reached the end. Congratulations, if you read this all the way through, you have read an entire tumblr post (and a long one that is) on why we can say that 1 + 1 = 2. Sorry to bother, but can I ask a question as a teacher? Back in that AITA post you reblogged, the anon said something like "I know I'm supposed to grade objectively, but I lowered his grade for bigotry". As a Brazilian that had to take tests to enter public university, I experienced tests that openly warned me they would zero my grade for bigoted speech. Like, writing "women are inferior to men" could very much get me a zero on my ENEM essay, and then I would have been disqualified for pratically all public universities for that year. So to me, that sounded pretty objective. Maybe that wouldn't be the case for a school test, but are there not such warnings for any test in the USA?
It's not a bother! It's interesting to see how different countries might handle the situation differently. This ask is regarding this AITA. Yes, the US is very different in terms of how writing is graded. In the US, "free speech" is protected, so the opinion of a student's writing is not supposed to factor into their grade. Writing is considered "strong" or "weak" depending on the evidence and reasoning provided to support claims, and the the quality of the prose of the writing (diction, syntax, grammar, usage, etc). Obviously, grading writing is always going to be somewhat subjective and differ a bit from teacher to teacher, but the goal is to be as objective as possible in assessing writing to teach the student skills to be a better writer.
That being said, my approach is to simply not allow bigoted topics for students' writing. "Free speech" is not absolute, and as a teacher, I have the responsibility to protect students from bigotry and guide them to be more accepting. So I just steer them in a different direction, and frame the assignment in a way so that their range of topics does not include that type of opinion. So far, that has worked for me, especially since I build rapport with students where they tend to listen to my feedback. That said, this was a testing situation with a student who is a total stranger, so that makes things more difficult. But even then, I'd talk to the student and maybe give them a "retake." Also, by law in the US, bigoted statements are generally not allowed in the workplace because it is considered harassment, so the behaviors of that student in the classroom would generally not be allowed in most schools. That being said, it can depend on how liberal or conservative of an area you live in. Conservative areas may allow or even encourage bigoted behavior. Major universities in the US tend to be liberal, so they might disqualify someone's whose essay was bigoted, like in Brazil, but there can be gray area and debate about what counts as an "opinion" or "bigotry" in the US. A university could get in trouble for "censoring free speech" or being "biased" against a conservative student.
I don't support that point of view, of course. I take no issue with barring bigoted students from a college, but since this is a high school student and not someone testing into college, my goal would be to educate the teenager on bigotry and, failing that, at least set clear boundaries on acceptable behavior. I tell my students that bigotry is never allowed in the workplace and they would simply be fired for making bigoted jokes or comments in most workplaces, and that I do not accept that in my classroom not only to prepare them for that, but also to create a safe space. So for me the bigger issue is the teacher never communicating this to the student but just letting them continue to be bigoted while passive aggressively dealing with the behavior and allowing it to continue in someone else's class. It should have been reported to the principal or dean and there should have been consequences and a call home. My point of view is the teacher needs to set clear boundaries and the student needs to learn to treat others with respect. So from my perspective, the teacher didn't really do their job. But I get that it's hard.

It's not too difficult! While also being quite difficult.
Let me explain.
The primary goal of a hypnotic induction is to get your friend to reflect inward, and then reflect outward, usually on the focus of your choice. Sometimes, that focus is something fancy, like an object or a specific thing that occupies a specific one of the five senses. There's a lot of little tricks you can learn to apply to the induction, but the most basic induction you can do while still maintaining a conversational approach is something like this!
That's step one. Letting your subject know that you're hypnotizing them. It may seem counterintuitive, considering that you want them to suddenly realize that they're entranced, but hypnosis, from my experience, is about perception, and allowing their perception of the situation to narrow down to "I am being hypnotized" is as simple as letting them know that an induction is happening.
I like to segue educational bits (like the one you're reading right now) into an induction, because the act of paying close attention and learning is an external reflection. In order to allow the subject to reflect internally, you would say something about how they are feeling or how they are breathing or some such thing. For example, right now, I'm sure you're noticing how your body is reacting to the words on the screen.
That last phrase was an example of being purposefully vague, which, as I'm sure you noticed, was not an issue for you, because you did indeed notice how your body was reacting to my words, and it caused you to begin entering a trance state. As your mind fills in the details of a vague statement, you're reflecting inwardly, whether you want to or not. In this essence, you can be put into a light trance simply by being presented with vague statements that direct you in the right state of mind. There's another vague statement. What is the right state of mind, right now? Is it relaxed and open? Is it clear-headed and excited? There is no wrong answer.
Because that's the fun thing about hypnosis. There is no wrong way to do it- as long as you reach the goal of producing an altered state of mind, you're doing it right. While this definition leaves some room for interpretation, it's generally accepted that there's a lot of ways to hypnotize a subject. Whether it's with an educational passage that causes you to realize that you've been focused and hypnotized the whole time you've been reading, or a simple conversation, hypnosis is wonderful and beautiful.
To summarize- if you reflect inward on how you are feeling, and reflect externally on your surroundings and the words in front of you, it will allow you to experience an altered state of mind that can on occasion be focused and open to following directions, but not necessarily always like how you may imagine hypnosis to be. Hypnosis is a varied and beautiful experience, and it's best when you have someone to share it with!

MAG 4 - 'Page Turner' - The odd attraction of antiques.
This statement has a lot of significance to me as an antique book collector. Being able to relate so clearly to that experience goes a long way to making the whole thing more unnerving. A collector of any object will be able to relate to the burning, jittering urge to acquire an object for your collection, but there's something else with antiques, books in particular.
The knowledge that not only does the object matter now, but it's mattered for decades, centuries, even. Its touched the souls of many through the years, and has reached through time and holds its hand out to grasp yours. A thing- an object, yet it outlived its creators and owners; a subtle defiance of the natural order, or so it feels.
But a book? It's all this and more. A tome that's educated its readers and is imbued with information and knowledge that someone was so desperate to share that they went to the effort of publication. A story or a theme that was so important an individual asked for it to outlive them. It's pages marked with fingerprints, coffee stains, annotations, even blood- all of them out of the control of whoever left them.
And that is just a book. Though the idea of 'just a book' does make me chuckle, the idea of a book with real, tangible, undeniable power does not. 'From the library of Jurgen Leitner', a mark of terror and rightly so. Some people are of the nature that means they're drawn to books, but a book with the power to draw in those that aren't? That's dangerous. Even outside of the awful power those books posses, a book in the hands of the wrong person can be a terrible weapon.
But can you imagine the feeling of having real power, control, otherworldly means of action. It's addictive, as proven by many other statements, it's hard to let go of if you end up with the right one. If the power fits the soul of the hands it ends up in then can it ever be released?
Even though the book wasn't supposed to be for Dominic Swayne he had a connection to it, it affected him. Micheal Crew is proof that if the book fits, it can do all sorts of things to you.
This, to me, poses an interesting question. If it was you, and if the book really spoke to you, however evil, would you be able to hand it over? To watch its destruction?
I don't think I would.

At a church conference once, a pastor was asked publicly, “What would you do if you were the ‘Pope’ of the entire evangelical church?” This pastor replied:
“I would ask preachers, pastors, and student pastors in their communication to get the spotlight off the Bible and back on the resurrection. Let’s get people’s attention back on Jesus as soon as possible, that the issue for us is always who is Jesus, [and] did he rise from the dead? And that we would leverage the authority we have in the resurrection as opposed to Scripture, not because I don’t believe Scripture’s inspired in terms of reaching this culture.”
Now what this pastor wanted to see happen in our churches is very different from what I have been seeking in all my years of creation-apologetics ministry.
My response to this question would be as follows: God’s Word warns us in 2 Corinthians 11:3 that the devil is going to use the same attack as he did on Eve to get people not to believe the things of God. When we go to Genesis 3:1, we find this first attack was on the authority of the very Word of God.
I call it “the Genesis 3 attack” of our day. The devil said to Eve, “Did God really say?” This first attack (which was successful) was to get Adam and Eve to doubt him and then not believe the Word of God. We are warned by God’s Word through the Apostle Paul that the devil will use this same attack on us and our children and friends. The attack will be directed at the Word of God.
The devil is very clever. In a sense, he has been saying the following to the church: You can go on and teach your kids about Jesus and the Resurrection, and about miracles like walking on water, feeding thousands, healing the blind and the lame, and raising the dead. You can teach them about the miracles of the Israelites crossing the Red Sea and Jordan River, and of Jonah living in a fish for three days.
The devil might continue: Yes, teach these Bible stories. But I’m going to attack the integrity of the Word. While you may teach them the wonderful Bible stories, I’m going to work hard to get them not to believe the Book, the Word, from which these accounts come. And once they don’t believe the Book, they won’t believe any of those accounts and their messages anyway. They are just stories, fairy tales, not real accounts. That’s what I would tell them the devil might say.
That’s exactly what I believe has happened in the culture. Whether it’s through the public education system (most kids from church homes attend government-run schools), the media, or even through compromised teaching in churches, the devil has been able to convince generations of people that the written Word cannot be trusted—particularly beginning with the book of Genesis.
When I have asked audiences how many of them have heard questions and statements like the following, usually all the hands in the room go up:
— Who made God? — This is a scientific age and science has disproved Genesis. — Noah couldn’t fit the animals on the Ark, so it couldn’t have really happened. — Where did Cain get his wife? — Doesn’t carbon dating disprove the Bible? — The Bible doesn’t explain dinosaurs. — What about all the “ape-men”? And the “races”?
Now, the Apostles Peter and Paul wouldn’t have heard such objections to the Bible. They did not have to deal with such “Genesis 3 attack questions.” In this era, however, the questions and statements above relate to the fact that the historicity of Genesis has been undermined for many generations. This generation is facing even more Genesis 3 attacks.
By and large, government schools present evolution and millions of years as fact. Such teaching has resulted in many young people doubting (and ultimately not believing) God’s Word. Sadly, most Christian families and churches have not been teaching creation and general biblical apologetics (although I rejoice that increasing numbers of families are beginning to realize the importance of doing this).
Because generations have not been taught to defend the Christian faith and thus don’t understand they can trust the Word, they have also rejected the primary message of the Word: salvation through Jesus Christ. Sadly, we’ve seen a generational loss from the church.
At Answers in Genesis, we recognize that the focus of Scripture from Genesis to Revelation is on our Savior, Jesus Christ. It’s the most vital message in the universe for us to proclaim. Because of our sin, God’s Son became the God-man to pay the penalty for our sin by dying on the Cross and being raised from the dead. But think about it: where do we get the message of salvation and the message of who Jesus is and his Resurrection? We find them in the written Word. How do we find out about our need for salvation? From the written Word. How do we find out what sin is and why we are sinners? From the written Word.
I’m reminded of the account (note I don’t use the word “story” which today, by and large, means fairy tale) of the rich man and Lazarus in Luke 16. They both died, and Lazarus went to be with Abraham while the rich man went to a place of torment. The rich man wanted to send a warning to his surviving brothers. He asked for Lazarus to return from the dead to tell them. He believed this would convince the brothers. We then read:
“‘I beg you therefore, father, that you would send him [Lazarus] to my father’s house, for I have five brothers that he may testify to them, lest they also come to this place of torment.’ Abraham said to him, “They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.’ And he said, ‘No, father Abraham; but if one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.‘
“But he said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead’” (Luke 16:27–31).
Many of our Christian leaders seem to be oblivious to what’s been taught in the education system and media. They apparently aren’t aware that, as a result, increasing numbers in this generation do not believe the writings of Moses (particularly Genesis). They don’t understand why we are losing teens and young adults from the church.
As I’ve stated many times, this exodus of young people from our churches has already happened in England and much of the rest of the Western world. If you want to know where the United States is headed, look at England.
One of the major contributing factors to this exodus is that much of the church did not teach apologetics and ignored (or compromised with) what kids were being taught at school concerning evolution/millions of years. They just kept on teaching about the Resurrection alone; all the while the devil was indoctrinating young people not to believe the Book—from which the message of the Resurrection comes.
Anyone who visits our Creation Museum and the Ark Encounter in northern Kentucky will know that we answer the skeptical questions of the day, point people to the reliable Word of God, and preach the message of Jesus and the Resurrection!
More and more we are finding that an increasing number of families and churches are using AiG resources to equip young people, and they are revolutionizing their churches. We often hear testimonies from churches that are using an apologetics approach in teaching, and that it has helped stop the flood of young people walking away from the church and God!
I will never apologize for standing on the authority of the Word of God. My father not only instilled the Christian worldview in his children from the foundation of God’s Word, but he would also research what the critics of the Bible were saying. And then he would give us the answers so we would not doubt and disbelieve God’s Word. Ultimately, we all need to remember that “faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Romans 10:17).
In 40 years of ministry, I have strived very hard never to waver from an uncompromising stand on the Word of God. And those of us who lead Answers in Genesis all have the same burden. We will teach the message of Jesus, the Resurrection, and the living Word, and, along with the Psalmist, we will proclaim:
“I will delight myself in Your statutes; I will not forget Your word” (Psalm 119:16).
I still remember the verse I learned as a child and what we taught our children: “Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You” (Psalm 119:11).

accidentally clicked on the explore tab and was almost immediately exposed to that person defending the use of chatgpt to cheat uni and write essays on the grounds that university degrees are basically a class mobility barrier and it's ethical to do whatever to get that degree because it's a survival tactic. to me the biggest flaw in this argument is that if we treat university as something irredeemable, then it becomes harder to salvage the good in the system, and as someone who is interested in learning and teaching and more generally higher education, obviously i do want to see the system salvaged. but i guess if you're a nihilist/university abolitionist then whatever man. i think the bigger problem i'm seeing in the notes is that people are uncomfortable with chatgpt writing essays and cheating for reasons they can't really articulate beyond "cheating is bad." ironically this is of course why we need broader education in critical thinking, because there are many cogent ways to object to this, e.g. cheating is bad because in the honour code of our society it shows a certain disrespect for your peers; getting an AI to write an essay is bad because for similar reasons we are uncomfortable with the idea of human functions being replaced, however imperfectly. like so many objections to AI just come down to personal philosophy but because of the devaluing of education and the anti-intellectualism at play in society (lol, lmao, etc) we're scared of saying we have "abstract" ethical objections to anything, there always has to be some practical, tangible reason for something to be bad. but perhaps the most disgusting thing i saw in the notes on that post was "why do you feel threatened by AI essays, just write better essays." jeez if only that was something they taught at some kind of educational institution staffed by people who genuinely earnestly believe in learning and knowledge and critical thinking. "if you want to prove you're better than someone who's cheating, just work harder" apart from this being such a callous statement (university students are the most overworked people on the planet, fuck off) i'm like.. so you agree that cheating a broken system is still cheating? and that the best way to fix a broken system is by dedicating hard work to re-establishing intellectualism as a fundamental value? fascinating.

a freaky deaky circus performer and acrobat, genderfluid chameleon punk born to perform, but freaky deaky has a limited paying audience and even more limited roles in the industry, so they wrestle with having to tone down their art (and their appearance) to get booked for more gigs. to Z, it's not selling out, it's "playing the game" until they can get more established and really make the art that they want.
Gianetti
a very intense individual who uses character and comedy to make his political statements to his bourgeois audiences, and to educate and equip his working class audiences. his most famous character is the beloved modern court jester, Gianetti, who uses his privilege to poke fun at the people whose actions he critiques. he's well known, and in high demand, yet dresses in rags and lives in a dirty commune with bohemians, and has a terrible reputation with other artists, but what is it that makes him so notorious?
The Main Character
is stuck in a rut always playing Sad Clown, is always following at Z's heels, is harbouring a dirty secret under that clown costume, and has become the new object of Gianetti's interest.
The Mythology of Gerard and Autumn Summerland
the power couple of the entertainment industry, giving everyone hope and delight through wartimes with their onstage romances, witty newspaper interviews, and glamorous magazine photos. they were the shining image of squeaky clean, perfectly balanced heterosexual divinity. they exemplified the rags-to-riches story that the young clowns live by, hoping they too can reach that level of stardom one day through hard work and suffering.
when autumn is tragically killed onstage on opening night of her own original production, her artistic legacy is left in the hands of gerard, who carefully crafts her image and the way she is immortalized as an industry tour de force. despite years of openly grieving, gerard continues rising to fame, and now that he's getting on in years, he wants to slow down and start writing and directing his own shows. in the meantime, he drums up money by running an unlicensed underground bar and cabaret to entertain and shmooze with his equally sleazy industry colleagues, where gianetti and Z perform every week with the hopes of getting recognized and "picked" by someone in the audience.
i admit I ADMIT i'm pulling some inspo for autumn from the dolores dei concepts, actually this whole story reeks of "guy who's obsessed with disco elysium and regurgitates it into all their art from then on".
i also pulled inspiration for gerard as an unsettling but beloved entertainment icon from dotssu 's character Clyde Clydesdale from their game INTRODEMO which is soooooooo cool and fun and creative and you should play it!!!!! get into ittttttt

I try not to speculate in public about real people too much because it's hard to know what the power dynamics are behind the scenes.
Objectively, though, studios are motivated by money. This is why Sharon/EvC's role was cut for ScarJo in CATWS, who's a much bigger box office draw and a fan(boy) favourite with her Black Widow. In this context, the choice of pushing PC long past her (literal) expiry date is...odd, and I really doubt it's all to do with the Stucky panic. Is HA the biggest box office draw out of the current cast of actresses? No. Apart from the MCU franchise, she only has a couple of TV shows under her belt. Meanwhile we've got Zoe Saldana, Natalie Portman, and even Awkwafina who have all starred in blockbuster movie productions before coming into the franchise. Is HA the most critically acclaimed out of the current actresses? No, the best she got was a Golden Globes nomination in 2011. Meanwhile we've got Oscar winners Brie Larson, Natalie Portman and Lupita Nyong'o, not to mention veterans like Cate Blanchett and Michelle Pfeiffer and Tilda Swinton. Even younger actresses like Florence Pugh and Hailee Steinfeld have more award clout and critical acclaim outside of the core MCU audience.
Is PC really that interesting a character that we want to see a fourth iteration of her, as suggested by this article? Fuck no. Aside from the subjectivity of that statement, very little of her remade story has been new or fresh. It's simply a rewrite of pre-existing canon with her as the awkward OC insert. Meanwhile we've got far more interesting characters in Nebula, Nakia, Monica Rambeau, Maya and Yelena that I'd love to see more of. Which brings me to...
HA's famous "wait their turn". It's 2022. The classic White privileged well-educated able-bodied lady from the 1940s has had her turn in 6 movies (3 CA + 2 Av + 1 DS) and 2 seasons of AC and 1 season of What If. It's time for other women's stories.

Botanical Gardens Are Not Yours, They're Ours And People Need To Learn To Respect That Better
Please stop taking plants from Botanical Gardens and / or bothering the staff of Botanical Gardens about whether or not you can harvest plants from them.
(Some larger Botanical Gardens will harvest for you, or have programs that sell harvested seed at the end of the season to help support them, breeding programs, research, etc. Ask about those programs instead if you think your Garden is potentially large enough to actually support one of those programs).
We had to have an entire section of our Master Gardener meeting set aside today to talk to (and be talked at by) City Parks and Recs, because we've been dealing with severe plant vandalism- and even outright theft of both plants and objects- at our Botanical Garden for months now; plus people just generally not respecting it as a public park meant for everyone.
I've already had to tell someone I know no myself, and tell them not to pick things or harvest seed from our Botanical Garden.
And now someone is apparently asking us to put a "pick your own" sign up in the Herb bed and allow random people to pick their own Herbs. Because I guess for some reason people feel entitled to them in particular because they're ... Culinary ???
Even though most of them aren't culinary, actually; each of our 4 Herb beds in the Knot section has a distinct purpose, and not all of the Herbs we planted in them are explicitly edible.
No. A public Garden is not your Garden (and they're certainly not a public food Garden just because they might grow things that also happen to be edible) ... We actively cannot trust the public to come into our beds and just do whatever they want, whenever they want to do it- let alone trust that they're educated enough to know what they're doing, or properly identify things that are untagged. Especially if the Garden doesn't double as a Teaching Garden.
If you want to browse and forage, there are plenty of other places to do so- including Pick-Your-Own Gardens / Farms, Food Gardens, Teaching Gardens, and Botanical Gardens that are explicitly designated for that purpose, or with that purpose explicitly in mind (and will actively say as much in their mission statement, or even in their name) ... But y'all seriously need to learn to respect the spaces that are not intended for those purposes a lot better than I'm seeing.
More importantly: Botanical Gardens have ground crews that maintain their Gardens for a reason and you are actively working against those ground crews when you do things like this. Please stop being disrespectful to the people who work really hard actually to give people Botanical spaces "just because they're plants".

if you know nothing about islam of course you don’t know what an authenticated hadith is, which is essentially, a confirmed and corroborated one RETOLD BY trusted people. there are a finite number of these and they have been compiled into books already for everyone’s convenience.
and who is this entire muslim world. are they on the phone with you right now. ask them how it’s possible for them to be on the phone if they’re currently being bombed, flooded, and exploited by the west. i find it hard to believe they’re more concerned about the tumblr radfem slandering them online.

“why do i care” uh because you guys ARE racist. “oh the liberals always scream islamophobia is racism how come we can’t just critique the religion” well you can. but you are not doing it justly. you are again 1) making up lies 2) excusing the murder and torture of middle eastern men because “they deserved it” 3) islam is not just a religion it is a culture. the people that practice it are largely the same race. when you say “muslims say it’s okay to rape slaves” you are saying “middle eastern people say it’s okay to rape slaves” whether that’s the intention or not. you can’t say these things without considering the implications or context. there is no separating the religion from the culture from the race.
i understand it’s hard to see when you’ve lived in a christian dominant society your whole life, but christianity is imbued into your culture. you’re just blind to it. if i start mocking christians for inbreeding, violence, and alcoholism, i am also attacking the western society. because these go hand in hand. but you’ll notice i’m not. because this isn’t real criticism. real christian criticism is attacking its control on politics, its indoctrination of children, its saturation in our education system. real critique of islam is attacking the men in power, the men who sell out their countries to the west, the men that don’t speak out against the injustices done to women and children with their blessing. and there are plenty of male islamic scholars that speak out against this. but see, they have no actual control over what the men in charge do. the men in charge don’t have morals. they want money. power. they don’t care about the religion. they don’t care about heaven or hell. they don’t give a shit if the prophet was a pedophile or not. but you painting him as one makes it easier for them to do wrong: they’ll say, “i’m just practicing my religion.”
and, to end this, i’ll just say islamophobia is entrenched with racism and here is my statement:
this weekend my family and i were at a park having a barbecue in a predominantly white town. this was a blue state, but people of color know that means nothing about the actual attitude you’re met with. my dad and brothers needed somewhere to pray, so they did, in our own space, quietly, on our own mat that we brought.
as soon as we left and got on the road we got pulled over by the cops. they asked us what we were doing here, where we lived, and so on. when we told them we were just going home, they let us go, and then tailed us through the state until we were out of their jurisdiction. all we know is someone at the park reported us. they saw a family of brown people, speaking in their own language, performing their strange rituals, and wanted us to pay for the audacity.
last WEEKEND. 4 days ago. do you know how much i suffer because of my perceived religion? whether i practice it or not? did you have the privilege of being socially outcasted and getting called a “terrorist” at school after 9/11? did your mom have to change the way she dressed because people were out there assaulting and attacking women who dared wear too much clothes on their good white christian land? did you worry about your dad going to the mosque after the new zealand shooting, and now when you visit with him you see bars on the windows and a digital lock on the door? do you fear getting on a plane because you get “randomly searched” EVERY TIME without fail? do you have a gnawing anxiety in your stomach when your parents visit their home country, knowing they could get caught in a war zone at any freak moment?
because the demonization of an entire culture still shows in people like you.
