*MISSING JUVENILE*** STAUNTON, VA

The Staunton Police Department is seeking the public’s assistance in locating a missing 12-year-old juvenile. Tymira Allen was last seen at her residence in the City of Staunton, VA around 2:30 a.m. on July 26th, 2023. She is believed to be wearing blue jeans with holes, white Nike low-top shoes, and a tan hooded jacket. If you have any information on Tymira’s whereabouts, contact the Staunton Police Department at 540-332-3842.

St. Francis of Assisi was one hellava Saint if you care to look him up. A rock star amongst Saints. I remember Frank McCourt thinking the world of him in Angela’s Ashes. I think he prayed to him, so the family wouldn’t starve to death.

The dark church in this snowy picture (that is snow, not clouds) is named after him and it is a beautiful old structure in this sleepy little hamlet called Staunton, established in 1761 with the town formally incorporated in 1801. I imagine this church was built sometime after a railroad stop appeared in 1854.

The City is home to the Western State Lunatic Asylum which was built 1871, or 72. When the first building was closed, (from what was likely inhumane treatment) they built a bigger building for the inmates..err…I mean patients were basically let go. So they dispersed throughout the town. This has lead to many stories about all sorts of things on people who populated this town, or died in that building…or died in the second building, but have come back as ghosts to haunt the town.

When modern medicine and psychiatry caught up to the third building, treatment improved greatly, and the ghost population diminished.

#igbofarmvillage #thisisntafrica #stauntonvirginia This farm shows recognizes the contribution of the Igbo victims of the Atlantic slave trade to the development of Virginia and the greater American frontier culture. Enslaved Igbo men, women, and children who traveled by force from many specific locations in the hinterland of Igboland to North America, helped to build what is now known as the United States. A great majority of those who came to Virginia boarded slave ships in the coastal towns, of Calabar, Bonny and Brass. Evidently, one of the starting points of Igbo slave journeys is the ancient Cave Temple Complex in Arochukwu. Arochukwu traders supplied slaves to the market in Bende (later Uzuakoli) which became the source of slaves traveling directly from Bonny to Virginia. The Igbo were greater in number than all the other enslaved Africans put together in Virginia in the 1700s when tobacco was the mainstay of the colony’s economy. Some estimates put the number of Igbo imported from the Bight of Biafra at 40% of all the import to Virginia by 1775. “Their number continued to increase to the point that tobacco planters on the valley west of the Blue Ridge replaced their white indentured servants with Igbo slave workers”. The Igbo were among the first settlers, they were among those to cross the Cumberland Gap and open the gateway to the west. For this project they recruited Reverend Dr. Stanislaus Maduawuchi Ogbonna, a man with traditional building expertise to assist with the construction of the buildings and Dr. Kanayo Odeluga to mobilize and coordinate volunteers. https://www.instagram.com/p/B-KdAPLIkRw/?igshid=a7o1qos5h2fg

I fell in love with the color of the sky so hard that I mixed paint and went outside repeatedly and looked up until I was confident that I had captured that color, or at least came close. Now it’s on the paintings on the wall in my textile studio. ⚜️ Current status: sitting here plotting what I will do to it next. Poppies are so cool! Layers of paint are so much fun! ⚜️ This series won’t be complete until I have done some serious paint splashing on this! Jackson Pollock was a genius. For that matter, @amanda_evanston is also a genius! ⚜️ Maybe I will finish it tomorrow? Who knows. These really are my fall colors! I will admit this is a little bit painting-to-match-my-sofa kind of art - which is arguably a lessor god - but it’s so FUN!
