Taking a break from my ACTRA rage for a minute to bring you: FIRES IN BC!
Hey everyone,
As you may or may not know BC is on fire.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As usual the Central and South Okanagan are weathering the worst of it. If you are travelling for your vacation... don't. It isn't quite as egregious as the Maui fires or even the Yellowknife fires as we are far more prepared for disaster of this size, but we literally do not have room for you.
Tumblr media
The "completely gone" is as of this morning, August 18th 2023.
Tumblr media
Red = under evacuation, orange = on alert.
Stay home and when you come visit next year PUT YOUR FUCKING FIRES OUT. Or get one of the smokeless firepit options that exist so you don't fucking light us on fire in the first place.
Anyway, we'll ultimately be fine. This has been our summer for the last 10+ years. The infrastructure that Maui and Yellowknife lack exists here. We'll cry and we'll mourn, and we might lose a few people, but most of what is going to be lost is just stuff (I will likely be losing some heirlooms due to my storage locker being in West Kelowna at this rate and I cannot go get them due to being locked out for lack of payment b/c I forgot to pay August).
So if you want to help, put Maui and Yellowknife first.

The CDC ends its policy of the five-day isolation and lumps guidance with those for other respiratory pathogens
On Friday, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued new guidelines urging people who are actively infectious with COVID-19 to return to schools and workplaces, thereby infecting their coworkers and the general public.
Under the guidelines, workers are encouraged to return to work 24 hours after their last fever, a period in which the vast majority of COVID-19 patients will be actively infectious.
This guidance has no basis whatsoever in public health. It has two fundamental aims. First, it seeks to ensure that workers show up on the job even as they pose a major safety threat to their co-workers and customers, in order to create profits for large corporations.
Second, and no less important, by allowing COVID-19 to spread uninterrupted, the US government, speaking on behalf of the financial oligarchy, is seeking to reduce life expectancy and create the conditions for the early deaths of older Americans and immunocompromised people.
The CDC’s policy change is being implemented under conditions in which COVID-19 is circulating at a higher level than at the same time during any previous year of the pandemic and under conditions in which all restrictions on the spread of the virus have been dropped. Due to the ending of all pandemic surveillance after the Biden administration scrapped the COVID-19 public health emergency declaration last May, the circulation of COVID can now only be seen through wastewater data.  ...
This is absolutely fucking appalling!

I am honestly getting pissed off with people who are entering New Zealand via the air and getting miffed about the fact that our airports have been struggling to keep shit running smoothly. We literally suffered a fucking CYCLONE, a full blown NATURAL DISASTER, not even a full month ago and are still dealing with the repercussions of that today. We are still dealing with high winds and dangerous weather, especially now that we are transitioning into autumn.
But yes, oh we are so sorry you had to wait a couple extra hours to get where you needed to go-
(Let it be known that I understand there could be specific reasons for the ire of the customers. I'm just sick of people expecting sympathy for their situations while not giving an ounce back to the people working their asses off to service them accordingly-)

People who wander around public events KNOWINGLY with Covid are incredibly selfish. You just had to go. And cost people a whole holiday and isolation from their families.

...okay but...jaskier’s family...being the addams family of the witcher world
all of them dress in black. all of them say offputting things at events. everyone is like 99.99999% sure they’ve all killed at LEAST three people. they REGULARLY hold court events in their graveyard with VERY unsettling comments about, “oh it does save time later, just having everyone here from the start”
and they love and support their bright-clothed songbird of a son, but jaskier is just the beloved blacksheep of the WEIRDEST godsdamned family on the continent

can 2024 be the year we stop calling stay-at-home moms stupid for being ‘financially dependent’ and risking being trapped in abusive relationships, and instead start addressing why there are no social safety nets in place for people who choose to leave the workforce to raise their children

A third of patients with long COVID in a new Cambridge study said they lost their jobs because of the condition
Nearly two-thirds of people with long-term effects from COVID-19 experience problems with concentration and memory, according to a new study from Cambridge University.
In a study of 181 patients with what's often called long COVID -- most of whom had been infected at least six months before the research began -- 78% reported difficulty concentrating, 69% reported brain fog (described as sluggish or "fuzzy" thinking) -- 68% reported forgetfulness and 60% reported problems finding the right word in speech.
Though their symptoms were self-reported, the claims aligned with significantly lower scores in cognitive tests.
"This is important evidence that when people say they're having cognitive difficulties post-COVID, these are not necessarily the result of anxiety or depression," co-author Muzaffer Kaser, a psychiatrist, said in a March release. "The effects are measurable -- something concerning is happening."
Half of the patients reported difficulties in getting their symptoms taken seriously, according to a release from the school, suggesting the medical community doesn't take cognitive issues as seriously as lung problems, fatigue or other symptoms.
According to the research, published in two studies in the journal Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience, more than half of the study's participants have been unable to work for extended periods of time and a third said they lost their jobs due to their illness.  ...
