Motivation is NOT an emotion. You can experience BOTH motivation and ANY emotion AT THE SAME TIME:

-MOTIVATED AND sad

-MOTIVATED AND mad

-MOTIVATED AND disgusted

-MOTIVATED AND anxious

-MOTIVATED AND angry

-MOTIVATED AND depressed

MOTIVATION is attributing VALUE & MEANING to a certain activity or pursuit in life.

If you DECIDE to associate MOTIVATION with an emotion (emotional reasoning), over time you’ll program your brain to THINK that - ABSENT that emotion - you must LACK this secret elixir of motivation.

It’s the same phenomena you might recall from Pavlov’s bell & slobbering dogs (Google it for the whole story).

EVERYONE is ALWAYS motivated; just not always in a HEALTHY direction.

You may be motivated to lay in bed all day. You may be motivated to sit in your recliner eating honeybuns all day. You may be motivated to skip work, skip school, skip leg day at the gym or skip your morning run.

But you may also be MOTIVATED to eat HEALTHY because you are anticipating the effects of poor nutrition on your body as you grow older (i.e., disability & nursing facility). You may be MOTIVATED to go to work REGARDLESS of a difficult EMOTION anticipating the pay check you can use to pay rent or take a vacation.

Motivation in EITHER a healthy or unhealthy direction is the SAME process in the brain as it is based on ATTRIBUTING or ASSIGNING “value & meaning” to a certain activity (e.g., moving or not moving).

The key is to design YOUR networks of neurons with accurate, realistic thoughts (ARTy’s) which will motivate you in a HEALTHY direction.
