every day i wake up and think about stealing harry and every day i wish that jkr wasnt real. inside me are two wolves and both of them wish stealing harry was original fiction and/or truly finished. the things you did with the characters is so unique. i love how you handled remus' lycanthropy given what was known of it at the time and how you made snape and tonks work somehow. literally how you do that you crazy person. im obsessed with it and no one has done it like you please how did you do that

Well, I'm glad Stealing Harry can offer some entertainment and comfort! :) I do have roughly 50K words of Stealing Harry Adapted To An Original Novel, but I stalled out on it -- it's a very complex story really, and adapting it to an original world is...a struggle. I will probably go back to it once I wear myself out on the Shivadh novels, or perhaps just as a break from them, but it's a real process.

The thing about Snape and Tonks, which is probably the relationship I get asked about the most, is that there are several things intersecting -- a gap in age, the fact that he was formerly her teacher, his...personality being what it was. But it's actually kind of ideal in terms of writing a relationship because they are, truly, almost in the same place: Tonks is mature for her age but still struggling to be seen as an adult, while Snape is immature for his and struggles to know how to maintain authority over his students, and because he hasn't matured he's doing kind of a garbage job of it.

So you get a situation which is very common in romance novels, where the demonstration of someone's love is that they are willing to change and grow for the person they love. Tonks is growing into herself as she enters the adult world more fully, but Snape is growing into someone better than he is, because he understands, even if it's only intuitively, that he can't go on as he has if he wants to form and keep strong relationships, and specifically if he wants to have a relationship with her. Which is very attractive, the idea of someone saying "You're out of my league" and then doing the work to level up.

One thing that's starting to really get to me with the James Somerton stuff is a real strong undercurrent of disdain toward his fans. And yeah, I was one of them. A good scam artist isn't as easy to spot as y'all seem to think. You forget that you have all the information right now. Two days ago most of you had never heard of him and it would have kept going. Anyone can fall for a scam, nobody is immune. I would love to have had whatever resources you guys think we all should magically know about so I could have kept my sad $5 a month I really needed but thought was going to something worthwhile. Some of us can only devote so much energy into things and when you have no idea whatsoever that something is amiss of course you're not going to go digging for sources, why would you when everything is fine as far as you know? I really wish I could have seen the dissenting opinions on him but for many, many reasons that aren't just that the dissenting voices weren't widely circulating at the time all I had was the thought every now and again that "huh that doesn't seem right" and then go on with my day. And I think that happened to a lot of us. So yeah. Say what you gotta say about Somerton, he has more than earned it with the damage he's caused, but maybe don't shit so hard on his former fans because that is going to be you someday with something, it happens to everyone sooner or later.

I’m sure this has been talked about before but the health system in Disco Elysium is so good at portraying Harry’s physical and emotional state. Like yeah, looking at bullet holes in a wall can give you a heart attack. Someone not liking you poem can cause a complete mental break. None of these things on their own will kill you, but your mental and physical state is so fragile that any one of them can be the final straw. The health system and the story convey what a mess Harry is in complimentary ways and it’s fucking awesome

And if something would actually kill or seriously maim you? The health system doesn’t get involved. You just die or get seriously maimed. You antagonize someone until they shoot you? Doesn’t matter how much medicine you have. Get shot in the leg? Yeah that’s gonna stick no matter how high your health is.

And of course the way that both low morale and low health can kill you- and the way that their mechanics are basically the same- shows Harry’s state as well. His mental and physical health are separate, but both can end his career and both are endangered every time he talks to someone or does anything even slightly dangerous.

In most video games, health functions to give you a second chance. Instead of dying outright from a bullet, you just lose health. Disco Elysium is the opposite. You will die outright from things that would kill you, and also if you aren’t keeping an eye on things you can die from the embarrassment of failing to make a jump! The health system is a way of emphasizing your fragility, not your strength. It’s super coo!!

LOL! Oh yeah, Quaker oatmeal packets with sugary dinosaur eggs have been around forever. If I'm remembering properly, the ones in Stealing Harry came out of a discussion I had with Heidi8 about how there didn't seem to be many magical breakfastfoods. I was eating a lot of oatmeal at the time, though admittedly not a lot of sugared oatmeal, and we both thought it would be delightful if you had dinosaur eggs in your oatmeal that could hatch into little creatures :D
