SCREEN: WOODY ALLEN'S NEW COMEDY, 'THE PURPLE ROSE OF CAIRO'
by Vincent Canby, The New York Times March 1, 1985
EVERYTHING about Cecilia (Mia Farrow) is tinged with melancholy, including the time — the depressed 1930's — and the place, a drab little New Jersey town where even the sunlight looks gray. Her husband, Monk (Danny Aiello), a big, short-tempered lug, isn't a bad sort, really, and, like almost every other man in town, he's out of a job and not looking for work. However, when he's had a few beers, he's inclined to push her around a bit.
Cecilia presents her objections to Monk in the form of extremely tentative observations: “All you do is drink and play dice and I wind up getting smacked.” Replies Monk with reason: “I always warn you first.” Cecilia is even a failure as a waitress in the town's single, very greasy spoon.
It's no wonder that Cecilia, like millions of other Americans of her time, finds life on the silver screen not only preferable to — but more real than — the world around her. One day, after going through a bad patch at the diner and with Monk, she is sitting in the Jewel Theater, watching something called “The Purple Rose of Cairo” for the umpteenth time, when the film's handsome, four-square juvenile, a pith-helmeted character named Tom Baxter (Jeff Daniels), steps down from the screen and into Cecilia's life. As Cecilia later confides to her sister, “I just met a wonderful man. He's fictional, but you can't have everything.”
This is the real “Purple Rose of Cairo,” which is the title of Woody Allen's new comedy, as well as of the movie within it.
To be blunt about it, “The Purple Rose of Cairo” is pure enchantment. It's a sweet, lyrically funny, multi- layered work that again demonstrates that Woody Allen is our premier film maker who, standing something over 5 feet tall in his sneakers, towers above all others.
“The Purple Rose of Cairo,” which opens today at the Beekman Theater, is as fine as anything he's ever done, from “Take the Money and Run,” “Annie Hall” and “Manhattan,” through “Zelig” and “Broadway Danny Rose.” Quite possibly, it is his best. I'd even go so far as to rank it with two acknowledged classics, Luis Bunuel's “Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie” and Buster Keaton's “Sherlock Junior,” both of which it recalls though in no way imitates.
It also recalls Mr. Allen's own small classic of a story, “The Kugelmass Episode,” about a professor of humanities who becomes so infatuated with Madame Bovary that he finds himself inside the Flaubert novel making mincemeat of the plot line.
Though Mr. Allen does not actually appear in “The Purple Rose of Cairo,” his work as the film's writer and director is so strong and sure that one is aware of his presence in every frame of film. It doesn't overwhelm the contributions of the others, but illuminates them, particularly the glowing, funny performance of Miss Farrow. It's as if this wonderful actress, in spite of her English stage credits and all of her earlier films, was finally awakened only when Mr. Allen cast her in “A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy,” “Zelig” and, most spectacularly, “Broadway Danny Rose.”
Her Cecilia, a waif of backbone and conviction, also possesses a liberating streak of recklessness. Another woman might have questioned her own sanity when discovering herself in the company of the dashing, fictional Tom Baxter, whose sunny disposition is only briefly troubled when he finds that a restaurant won't accept the stage money he has in his pocket. Cecilia questions nothing. As might a true Surrealist, she accepts the illogical as the natural order of things. So does the exuberant Tom, who exclaims after their first kiss, “How fascinating! You make love without fading away!”
Although this is, after all, a movie, the way of true love cannot run smoothly. For one thing, the other characters in the film-within-the- film, abandoned when Tom Baxter left the story, cannot proceed. The members of this cast of stranded actors, beautifully played by John Wood, Zoe Caldwell, Van Johnson, Milo O'Shea and Ed Herrmann, among others, sit around on the screen in various stages of boredom and panic. The actor who plays the headwaiter within the movie welcomes the chance to step out of character and do a little tap dance.
Meanwhile, the film's producer (Alexander H. Cohen) and a small army of Hollywood executives swoop down on the small town. One man suggests that if Tom Baxter won't go back onto the screen, they should withdraw the film from release and take the loss. They then summon Gil Shepherd, the actor playing Tom Baxter, in an attempt to get him to persuade Cecilia to persuade Tom to return to the movie.
As the complications multiply and become increasingly Pirandellian, only Cecilia keeps her wits about her.
My admiration for Mr. Allen extends to everyone connected with “The Purple Rose of Cairo” — all of the actors, including Mr. Daniels, Mr. Aiello, Dianne Weist and the players within the film within; Stuart Wurtzel, the production designer, and particularly Gordon Willis, the director of photography, who has great fun imitating the look of the movie Cecilia falls in love with, as well as in creating a style fitting to the depressed times that frame the interior film.
I'll go out on a limb: I can't believe the year will bring forth anything to equal “The Purple Rose of Cairo.” At 84 minutes, it's short but nearly every one of those minutes is blissful.
“The Purple Rose of Cairo,” which has been rated PG (“Parental Guidance Suggested”), contains some mildly vulgar language and a scene with some genteel, friendly prostitutes.

Sad to hear of the passing of Actress Tisa Farrow (1951-2024)
Tisa Farrow, who starred in a handful of ’70s films including “Only God Knows” and “Winter Kills,” has died.
She was 72 years old.
She died “unexpectedly” in her sleep, no cause of death was listed.
Tisa Farrow, was born on July 22, 1951, and pursued a film acting career that lasted from 1970 to 1980, She first appeared in John Trent’s Vietnam War-era film “Homer” before pursuing more work in films including “Some Call It Loving” in the following years.
Tisa Farrow had other aspirations beyond acting. She wanted to be a filmmaker.
“I want to direct a great horror movie before I die,” she said.
Her directing dreams never manifested, but she did star in horror films “Zombie” and “Antropophagus” toward the end of her film career. Her acting résumé also featured appearances in Woody Allen’s “Manhattan” and in James Toback’s “Fingers,”
After her acting career, Farrow pursued medicine and worked as a nurse for 27 years.
Farrow was the youngest of seven children. In addition to Mia , Tisa Farrow is survived by brother John Farrow, sisters Stephanie Farrow and Prudence Farrow, daughter Bridget and grandson Kylor.

Have any of your OCs had name changes? If so, why
god. HAVE THEY. i'll just,,, draw you up some pipelines here. i had to go DIGGING for some of these old ones
it's important to note that i suck at naming ocs, but i cannot have unnamed ocs. whenever i'm on tumblr and i'm like "this oc doesn't have a name yet!!" i'm lying. i'm a liar. they do have a name, but it's a terrible name and i haven't come up with their good one yet.
ella jenson -> bella jonson -> trix zolotova -> ela zolotova -> angelique lavoie
caldon (LITERALLY a keyboard smash name) -> jamie blithin -> corey blythin -> corbin blythe
beatrice spin-something -> sashanna spin-something -> bay, no last name, like cher -> sasha lebedev -> taitu lebedeva -> taitu lebedeva -> beatrice farrow -> ???? i am in the process of maybe renaming bea

Which of your OCs need a break from all that you put them through?
All Of Them. next question
