And there you have it
From Tvline: Sherman-Palladino notes that the decision to have Mei leave town at the start of Season 5 “was determined [long] in advance of [Stephanie] becoming the biggest, hugest star in the entire world,” adding, “You don’t ask Stephanie to show up and not give her anything to do. If she’s gonna show up, you gotta give her great stuff to do. She’s not going to sit there for two or three episodes and be window dressing just because we’re greedy and we love Stephanie.“She’s a rock star,” Sherman-Palladino sums up. “She comes in, she does rock star s–t, and then she goes out and [gets nominated for] an Oscar.”
Adds EP Daniel Palladino: “We wanted to show Joel with a woman who was even more independent than Midge was. Midge embraced the Betty Crocker myth; Mei did not. So [her] pregnancy [teed up] an inevitable conclusion [for the character].”
Michael says he was shocked she wasn't coming back and didn't find out until reading the first episode’s script then asked Stephanie and she confirmed it. He thought they were endgame. Just wow.

The curtains have closed on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and I’ve been basking in the warm glow of relief since it aired that they not only stuck the landing with the finale, but created one of my favorite final episodes of all time. And that final scene-! Episode 9 ticked every box I needed: the right amount of resolution and ambiguity, of catharsis and the bittersweet. From beginning to end, Midge knew exactly what she wanted, with all the positives and negatives that happened along the way. I loved that the finale gave me the satisfaction of not just Midge’s arc coming full circle, but for Susie, Joel, Abe, and Rose as well – not only their relationship to Midge, but their growth as people. I also thought Lenny’s character was handled with grace and respect, which was also extremely important. The show didn’t shy away from reality of what he went through, but didn’t indulge, either. I loved seeing the thank you card in the end credits to Kitty Bruce, too. I hadn’t realized that any of Lenny's stand-up material used on the show had to be approved by her, which was great to know.
I was so wary leading up to the finale, as I wondered how it affect the show retroactively. Would it be like American Gods, Westworld, or Killing Eve, where I can still enjoy and recommend the earlier seasons even though I didn’t love the direction that the shows ultimately took? Or would it be like Game of Thrones where the finale was so poor that it retroactively made the earlier seasons unwatchable because everything felt pointless? Thankfully, the end of TMMM didn’t quite end up being either, with S5 being an improvement over S4, and then brought the show to a close with a brilliant finale that made everything worth it.
What a void TMMM leaves behind, too: there’s nothing else quite like it. The rhythmic quality to the dialogue. Those insanely long takes with rapid fire back and forth banter. The lavish and outstanding set, costume design, and hair and make-up. The incredible cinematography. The pitch perfect licensed music.
I'll really miss the show's excellent cast. The show wouldn’t have worked if not for core of Rachel Brosnahan as Midge, who was superb from beginning to end. It was incredible discovering that Alex Borstein was not only a brilliant comedian and writer, but a heart shatteringly good dramatic actor was well. The endless joy of the titan that is Tony Shalhoub, always having incredibly chemistry with every scene partner. Kevin Pollak and Caroline Aaron playing characters that have you tearing your hair out in one moment in frustration and howling with laughter in the next. TMMM was my introduction to Marin Hinkle and Stephanie Hsu, who both always absolutely astonished and captivated. Listening to either of them in a scene was music to the ears with impeccable timing of delivering dialogue. There’s also Luke Kirby being so damn good he took a character that was potentially going to be a one-off for a scene and became a series staple. Kudos Michael Zegen as Joel, who brought sincerity and warmth to a complicated character from beginning to end. And that’s only the main cast, not counting the breadth of talented actors who were recurring or in one-off scenes.
And of course, no one has anything to work without a talented team of writers, led by Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino. I had my frustrations with S4 and aspects S5, but I'm still grateful for it all, and for ending the show on a high. (…though can someone just let ASP do a musical? For everyone’s sakes. Said with affection.) Finding out TMMM got one less season from Amazon than planned definitely made a few aspects of S5 make more sense. I’m curious what the original six season plan was, but I ultimately feel like five seasons is the perfect amount for a such a character driven show as TMMM.
On a personal note, it wasn’t until the last few episodes were airing that I realized how big a loss TMMM ending was going to be for me. I can’t remember the last show that has been so near and dear to me for so many years. I can't believe it started in 2017! It's rare I catch a show from when the first episode airs to the end. Watching S1 feels like a lifetime ago, and so much has changed in my life since. To compound this, TMMM was a special show I got to enjoy with family as well – a rare case of our tastes aligning, with the joy of sometimes getting to watch it together if life and timing worked out. I’ll always have extremely fond memories of savoring S2 and the hilarity of the Catskills with my mother. It was a brief moment of respite in an otherwise extremely stressful year.
With S5 coming to a close, I can comfortably say The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is one of my all-time favorite television series. It wasn’t a flawless run, but few shows are -- and the highs are incredible and rarely matched. I’m very spoiled that three of my favorite shows in recent years ended with stellar finales that beautifully encapsulated the show: Black Sails, Better Call Saul, and now The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Now that I've contentedly seen Midge give her curtain call, I’m off to watch the Succession finale and catch up on Barry.
It's still crazy to me that The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Ted Lasso, Succession, and Barry will end within a week of each other. Goddamn.

Who would you like to see in the Palladinos next project. New people and from Maisel/BH/GG
A lead actress who does not have blue eyes and dark hair maybe?
Maybe like. Feature some people of color a little? Maybe? Possibly some meaningful queer rep?
I mean, The Palladinos make a very specific kind of media. Let's be real about that. And it's not that there isn't value in it, but it is a little...
Tired. I think.
I would love to see ASP write a vehicle for Stephanie Hsu, who is fabulous. But on the other side of that coin is the fact that...ASP might not be super sensitive about writing a more diverse cast. She's real bad at that, as we've seen in the past.
But I dunno.

Mrs Maisel || Gilmore Girls
Okay, so I have a few thoughts after watching the first few episodes of Mrs Maisel and I would really love @stellaluna33 @sagesfandomspot @butchjess @parisgellergf @thegreatwars to chime in, cause what I'm about to say may be unpopular or a little controversial:
Spoilers Ahead if you haven't watched the S5 premiere of Mrs Maisel!!!
So, as we all know: Stephanie Hsu aka Mei Lin, is officially out of the Maisel narrative and here's how she was written out:
She has officially moved to Chicago for her residency, she (presumably- it was hinted at) ended her pregnancy and broke up with Joel.
So, from an interview with ASP and Dan Palladino, this is what she quoted about Mei:
“[She] was brought in for a hot blast [to knock] Joel off of his axis [and] out of the Midge world, she also represent[ed] the next generation of women that would be coming up after Midge, who might be thinking a little ahead of the game, like, ‘Maybe before I get married and have kids, I’m gonna accomplish this.’ Midge was a little late for that. She fell into her ambition. Stephanie was playing those girls in the 60s who are, like, ‘I’ve seen my mom’s way, and maybe I’m going to do it a slightly different way.'”
Another quote from Dan Palladino was:
“We wanted to show Joel with a woman who was even more independent than Midge was. Midge embraced the Betty Crocker myth; Mei did not. So [her] pregnancy [teed up] an inevitable conclusion [for the character].”
So, I was thinking and I know it's controversial but-
What if Rory could have that same thing?
Everyone has assumed that Rory will follow in her mother's footsteps, become a single mom and thrive in a career, but that doesn't have to necessarily be the same.
The fact is that Rory had more support than Lorelai when she got pregnant. And she's on the cusp of something, just like Mei. So she could and it's a big could, that she ends the pregnancy.
IMHO, what would be the bigger kick was if Rory miscarried- that would have even more hurtful effects than if she willingly terminated the pregnancy. Given Rory's character arc and personality, she would definitely take it hard and she would then try to bury her grief by burying herself into her career but then she could push away her family, and have zero interest in romantic relationships till she slowly starts growing out of that shell she went into in the later seasons of Gilmore Girls and AYITL, and also by opening up to, and in my perspective, someone like Jess, who she has a healthy platonic/romantic connection with; and this has to be of the opposite sex, I don't think Lorelai, Lane or Paris would help, given that they are moms and Rory would feel a pang of jealousy and sadness given that she may interpret the miscarriage as a mistake on her part and that it was the universe's way of saying that she's not cut out or fit to be a mom. In this way, she shrinks into Lorelai's shadow and this again amps up the drama.
Anyway, I like that ASP has these kinds of narrative parallels that are shocking but actually work- they are controversial, given that we are in a post Roe vs Wade conflict, but it's very realistic and understandable when you analyse it on a microscopic level.
To conclude, I would like to point out the central theme of Maisel's final season which is summarized in a single quote by Mei as well as the parallels that are set with Midge through the flashforwards of Esther, Ethan and Midge's future:
“I can’t have it all, Joel. If I’m really going to be a doctor then I have to be a doctor.”
And Midge in her 60 minutes interview saying:
"Lucky in life, unlucky in love."
So, it could be the same for Rory and what she chooses: being her mom (continuing what AYITL sets up) or forging her own path (Like Mei) or dealing with something that is her own individual trauma that no one has experienced and she has to deal with it firsthand.
So... Thoughts Please!!!

Throwback: Roy Hargrove-Juicy
Tumblr media
Roy Hargrove's Hard Groove album was a tribute to his childhood affection for hip-hop. He credited the project to his band The RH Factor. As a young star trumpet player in the '90s, he was recognized for his roots in bebop and hard bop styles of jazz. He quickly expanded his palette and would successfully record Latin jazz which won him a Grammy and later started his own big band. Genre-crossing came naturally for him and Hard Groove was more than hip-hop as it included R&B and funk influences. "Juicy" was a slow-simmering ballad featuring vocalist Renée Neufville who was one-half of the R&B woman duo Zhané. Hargrove's masterful control of his horn's entry with a blast then an immediate retreat into soft melodic lines and Neufville's lyrics about romantic attraction radiated with a building sensuality. Anthony Hamilton, Common, Meshell Ndegeocello, Erykah Badu, D'Angelo, Stephanie McKay, Q-Tip, Bernard Wright, Pino Palladino and James Poyser also were contributors to Hard Groove.  The title was self-explanatory as the music was groove-centric using space and bits of improvisation to create a mood. Hargrove once stated to an interviewer that genre choice was secondary but how the music makes an artist feel should be the goal. Hard Groove was Grammy-nominated for Best  Performance By a Duo or Group with Vocals and had already received a warm critical reception. It was the first of three RH Factor albums to come out between 2003-2006. Roy Hargrove's "Juicy" celebrated attraction and love connection with a seductive tonal fluency and Neufville's bubbling emotion.
In 2021, Hargrove's estate released his first posthumous album, the duet album In Harmony with pianist Mulgrew Miller. In 2020, Hargrove's widow Aide Brandes-Hargrove and daughter Kamala established the official Roy Hargrove website and the company Roy Hargrove Legacy LLC to preserve his life's work, as well as Instagram (@groveydean) and Twitter (@groveydean), accounts for him. The documentary Hargrove debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival. They were critical of the film but still grateful for its celebration of Hargrove's life and music.

REVIEW: The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 4 Episodes 3 & 4 - Beautiful Depiction of Grief and Hope
Tumblr media
This week, Amazon Prime released two new episodes in the forth season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, created by Amy Sherman-Palladino. The episodes this week are absolutely beautiful in their depiction of grief and the importance of friendship.
Episode 3 'Everything is Bellmore' is written by Daniel Palladino & Amy Sherman-Palladino and directed by Daniel Palladino. Episode 4 'Interesting People on Christopher Street' is written by Daniel Palladino & Amy Sherman-Palladino and directed by Amy Sherman-Palladino.
In Everything is Bellmore, Susie (Alex Borstein) loses her friend, roommate, and Gaslight colleague Jackie (Brian Tarantina). Throughout the episode, Susie learns more and more details of her friend's life that she never knew, and sees how close of a friendship they shared. The episode is a heartfelt send-off to Brian Tarantina who tragically passed away in 2019.
We see so many different sides to Susie's grief, especially how the death lingers and follows her everywhere she goes, until she allows her feelings to flow freely. One of the most memorable moments in this episode comes when Susie speaks at Jackie's funeral, trying to make sure everyone gives him the respect he deserves.
Tumblr media
Everything is Bellmore does an especially wonderful job highlighting the grief through comedy. Some of the best comedic moments of the series connect with Susie's grief. When she first learns of Jackie's passing, Susie also learns how many other deaths--including gruesome murders--have happened inside her apartment. This revelation causes her to leave and move in with Midge (Rachel Brosnhan), leading to more comedy highlighting the difference between Susie and Midge's family.
Seeing Susie interact with Abe (Tony Shalhoub) and Rosie (Marin Hinkle) as a roommate of sorts is delightful and veers into the more situational comedy aspects of the show. I have been loving how this season is spending more time on creating moments of comedy that are not on stage.
The show is working hard to create a balance between its 'drama about comedy' and more classic situational comedy moments. This has been especially prominent within Susie and Joel's stories this season. I love the awkward dynamic this season is exploring between Joel and Susie. A moment between the two was one of my favorites this week.
Joel's arc focusing on his parents trying to set him up with a nice Jewish girl brings out the comedy through awkward dates and hidden relationships while never forgetting the gravity of the situation with his relationship with Mei. Joel wants Mei to meet his parents, not fully understanding the seriousness of Mei's doubts. It's 1960.
She's both not Jewish and Chinese. Her fears of meeting his family come from a very real and very scary place. The chemistry between Stephanie Hsu and Michael Zegen is always wonderful. Their performances are wonderfully captivating and I love the reality of their conversations. The relationship between Joel and Mei has its memorable and adorable moments, yet the show never forgets the dangers that impact their relationship in 1960.
Tumblr media
The heart of both Everything is Bellmore and Interesting People on Christopher Street is Susie and her ever-present grief, yet the episodes ties her story in with that of Midge and her family, while also introducing new characters. When the Maisel family attend the theater, so Abe can review the musical, Susie comes along and her grief follows her in the form of every poster she passes in the theater bearing the word 'death'.
One storyline in Everything is Bellmore that I found to be particularly affecting and relatable is when Abe's career as The Village Voice's theater critic mingles with his personal life. He must review Buzz Goldberg's (Brandon Uranowitz) musical that he developed over the years during the annual trips to the Catskills--and ten years ago, Abe saved his life. From this set-up, I knew Abe was going to hate the musical, and he does, but what truly makes this storyline so perfect is how Abe stands up for his review.
So often, critics in film and television are referred to only with phrases like 'don't listen to the critics' or 'the critics don't know anything'. What I loved so much about this storyline is how it found the comedy of being a critic while also respecting the medium. A particularly impactful moment comes when Abe stands by what he wrote, even though his friends and community are turning on him.
Abe maintains his integrity and most importantly, when asked what harm a simple musical could do, Abe does not shy away. He explains how resources given to this mediocre bordering on terrible musical--with only one good song reprised five times--are being taken away from more deserving shows.
This brought me what I see repeated so often: 'it's just a movie' or 'what did you expect?' when people criticize anything online. There is an idea in this question of what harm this show could do that rings similar to critics--especially within the horror genre--being told they should just accept anything. This mindset of accepting everything, no matter how mediocre, much like what Abe suggests, will lead us to never getting anything spectacular again.
Within both episodes, we see Midge in her new work environment as the MC at a strip club. This change feels natural for the character, even though some view this as a bad decision. There is passion in this choice for Midge, and the change of scenery does wonders for the show and her character. We are introduced to the dancers that she introduces each night, and in a particularly memorable moment, we see the workers at the club stop carrying their trays of drinks because they are captivated by Midge's comedy.
Tumblr media
Midge's strong personality does not go away within her new job, and quickly she is at odds with her new boss Boise (Santino Fontana). There is a wonderful frantic energy in the scenes within the strip club, especially the moments between Midge and Boise. Santino Fontana is a perfect fit for the series, and I am eagerly awaiting to see where they take his character in future episodes.
In addition to the introduction of new characters within the colorful strip club, this backdrop gave way to this season's first glimpse of Lenny Bruce (Luke Kirby). Kirby's performance is one of the most memorable aspects of the series as a whole, and his first moment this season is instantly captivating. Lenny and Midge are both surprised to see each other, but quickly fall into their familiar banter and easy chemistry. Lenny offers Midge advice in the form of a drawn-out, yet enthralling story about overcoming distractions.
Interesting People on Christopher Street shows Midge on a terrible date with a doctor, and her own lack of romantic happiness inspires Midge to find someone for Susie. She does this by asking people on Christopher Street where she might find a bar to take her friend. She finally does find a lesbian bar, but there is something that does not feel quite so sincere about Midge's gesture. Coming after what Midge did to Shy Baldwin--and her own comments that suggest she does not regret it--this effort feels a little underdeveloped, but the show does address this to a point. We see Susie's honest reaction to Midge's surprise.
This episode shows Susie's growth after going through such a difficult and emotional experience. Seeing Susie find her own bright light of success in the form of a new apartment big enough that she can live in it and have a professional office space. Yes, there's a blood stain on the floor, but not every victory is perfect. This episode gives Susie a break and we see true happiness as she is one step closer to making her dreams come true.
Tumblr media
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is a show about hope and following our dreams and this goes for every character. This season has spent much-appreciated time focusing on the dreams and goals of the characters around Midge, giving us insight into their lives--both connected to and separated from Mrs. Maisel.
These two episodes are entrancing and emotionally resonant with captivating performances--especially from Alex Borstein, Michael Zegen, Stephanie Hsu, and Tony Shalhoub--capturing how we handle grief, find new paths for ourselves, and overcome obstacles.

A lot of mob to digest
Title: “The Irishman”
Release date: Nov. 1, 2019 for a limited theater run; moves to Netflix on Nov. 27
Starring: Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci, Jesse Plemons, Bobby Cannavale, Anna Paquin, Ray Romano, Harvey Keitel, Stephen Graham, Aleksa Palladino, Stephanie Kurtzuba, Jack Huston, Kathrine Narducci, Domenick Lombardozzi, Paul Herman, Gary Basaraba, Marin Ireland
Directed by: Martin Scorsese
Run time: 3 hours, 29 minutes
Rated: R
What it’s about: An elderly Frank “The Irishman” Sheeran recalls how he got involved with organized crime, his life as a hitman and his relationship with Teamsters leader Jimmy Hoffa.
How I saw it: Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman” is undoubtedly an epic. It is big cinema and high art in every way imaginable. It features powerful performances from veteran actors we expect that kind of thing from. The story is well-written and engaging, and the conversations seem natural, as if they were happening at that moment. It is brutal at times and hilarious at others. It is a thorough study of relationships among largely terrible people and their victims, some innocent, some not. It is an outstanding movie.
But there’s just so much of it. Too much of it.
“The Irishman” checks in at 209 minutes, and for much of the movie, the time seems to move along just fine despite deliberate, comfortable pacing. But the minutes start to add up, the last fourth of the movie starts to drag and repeat itself, and by the end “The Irishman” seems like too much of a good thing. Add that to the feeling we have seen all of this before (a Scorsese film about the mob, with first-person narration, stark violence and time period specific music), and “The Irishman” seems less satisfying than it should have been.
Scorsese’s film is based on the 2004 book “I Heard You Paint Houses: Frank ‘The Irishman’ Sheeran and Closing the Case on Jimmy Hoffa” by Charles Brandt. It chronicles the life of Sheeran, a World War II veteran who was working as a truck driver in the 1950s when he became involved with the Buffalino crime family of Pennsylvania. Sheeran allegedly became a hitman for the mob and claims to have killed between 25 and 30 people, most notably Hoffa, a confession Sheeran made before dying in December 2003. His claim has both been corroborated by forensic investigations and disputed in several publications. Hoffa went missing in 1975, and his remains were never found.
“The Irishman” begins with an elderly Sheeran (Robert De Niro) recalling his story, and the film jumps around between time periods, with de-aging CGI helping De Niro (76) and Joe Pesci (also 76) as Russell Buffalino appear at least a little younger. De Niro’s Sheeran narrates, and his is a fascinating story whether you choose to believe all, some or none of it. De Niro is strong here (of course), in a measured sort of way, and the first third of the movie sets up his story and his involvement with the Buffalinos.
De Niro dominates early, but when Al Pacino enters the picture as Hoffa, the middle and latter parts of “The Irishman” belong to him. Pacino’s effort is more showy, perfect for portraying Hoffa, a man who was (at least in this version of him) odd, bigoted, either an idiot or a genius, demanding and unapologetic (which, according to this telling of Hoffa’s life, is the reason he was killed). Pacino is brilliant throughout, but he is riveting in a scene in which he is chewing out his underlings after attorney general Robert Kennedy came after Hoffa and the mob (his efforts ending when his brother, President John F. Kennedy, was assassinated, and in this story the mob is tied to JFK’s death). Sheeran is on the receiving end of the rant and threatens to stop working for Hoffa before being talked out of it. The middle parts of the movie are about the relationship between Sheeran and Hoffa, and that relationship eventually sours when Hoffa goes to prison and loses much of his power within the Teamsters (though he refuses to accept his fate).
Hoffa’s decline coincides with the part of “The Irishman” that seems to lose its early steam. The late stages of the movie find the key characters aging and dying in prison, and Sheeran confessing to a priest and being sad about one of his daughters, Peggy (Anna Paquin), not speaking to him. Hoffa had taken a young Peggy under his wing, and as an adult she seemed to sense that her father was responsible for Hoffa’s death or disappearance. The final act is when “The Irishman” starts to seem like a film whose parts are greater than its whole.
Scorsese is a master at getting great performances out of his cast, and this film is no different. Ray Romano is fun as Sheeran’s attorney, Bill Buffalino, as is Bobby Cannavale as mob hitman Felix “Skinny Razor” DiTullio. Jesse Plemons makes the most of limited screen time and delivers lots of laughs as Chuckie O’Brien, who Hoffa treats like a son but, according to his story, helped orchestrate Hoffa’s murder.
Scorsese, at 77, still has it. “The Irishman” will rank among his best work, and it is the product of a director who has been around the block a time or two but still has a younger man’s creative energy and vision. “The Irishman” is just a lot to digest in one sitting, and it is asking a lot of the audience to stay emotionally invested for that long. It plays more like a miniseries watched without breaks. It’s good stuff. It’s just too much good stuff.
My score: 83 out of 100
Should you see it? Yes. It’s worth a look if you have a lot of patience. Of course, that becomes less of an issue as it moves from theaters and onto Netflix, where you can watch it at your own pace.

HG/ Aural Sculpture(s) and Bad Seeds + ConiglioViola + Jadmx
Elenco artisti:

The Marvellous Mrs Maisel season 3 review: This one will give you a sugar rush - tv
Tumblr media
The Marvellous Mrs Maisel season 3 Cast: Rachel Brosnahan, Alex Borstein, Michael Zegen, Tony Shalhoub, Marin Hinkle, Kevin Pollak, Caroline Aaron Creator: Amy Sherman-Palladino The Marvellous Mrs Maisel is in no mood to give the luggage a rest. Season 2 went to Paris and Catskills, season 3 finds us on the road as the singing-wisecracking entourage of Shy Baldwin (Leroy McClain), think a Mrs Maisel version of Nat King Cole. There is so much travelling that even Susie (Alex Borstein) trades her crumpled paper bag for a suitcase – asking her to give up the bag would be too much, inviting a “I need to teach you to pack” from Midge. Expert at high speed verbal ping-pong, Midge (Rachel Brosnahan) is opening comic for Shy, and if anything, she is more marvellous than ever. She and Susie go to Las Vegas, they go to Florida. They play craps and they try their luck at slot machines, they swim, and they sweat. But mostly, they gallop through rapid crosstalk, bringing us to Midge’s earlier assertion that “only women should be funny”.  Watch the trailer here: There is a reason that Marvellous Mrs Maisel drops around Christmas time. It is a show that you need to enjoy over holidays – marvel over those fabulous dresses; gape at the spectacle that are its set pieces, one more elaborate than the other; savour its gags. The show created by Amy Sherman-Palladino and husband Daniel Palladino wants you drunk on the holiday cheer so that you won’t ask for substance, for there is little. Mrs Maisel is stuck in its own trap – having given us a heroine full of fighting spirit and with a closet full of skirts in the first season, the show refuses to change its shtick. To be fair to Brosnahan, she has enough charm and neurotic energy to carry us off one more time, but she is straining with the effort.
Tumblr media
The Marvellous Mrs Maisel’s current season stands out more for everything it refuses to address than what it does. Season 3 begins with Mrs Maisel in arms of Mr Maisel (Michael Zegen), sneaking off in early hours for a USO Social. Is it just me or Joel is omnipresent in the show, his story getting as much screen time as that of his plucky, far more entertaining wife? He now wants to open a club and gets an illegal mahjongg den and Mei (Stephanie Hsu) as a bonus. Joel really has a type and Mei appears to be a Chinese stand-in for his soon to-be ex-wife. At home, the life of Midge’s parents (Tony Shalhoub and Marin Hinkle) is as adrift as their story arc in the show. Joel’s parents Kevin Pollak and Caroline Aaron make a shrill appearance, or five, and there are so many squabbling in-laws’ jokes that you can take. Also read: Neha Kakkar slams Gaurav Gera, Kiku Sharda for body-shaming her: ‘Thankless people, aren’t you ashamed?’ Marvellous Mrs Maisel’s current season stands out more for everything it refuses to address than what it does. The show steadfastly refuses to talk about Susie’s sexuality while piling yet another joke about her being mistaken for a man. Alex Borstein plays her character with vim and vinegar but the pugnacious audience favourite needs to get her due. She is scrappy, she is butch and one of the few who is allowed to show her cracks. By refusing to address her sexuality, is The Marvellous Mrs Maisel showing us the taboos that existed around the subject in the 60s or its own inhibitions? To this point, I am leaning towards the latter. Talking of taboos brings us to what is perhaps the best episode in the current season, the one where Midge meets with Lenny Bruce (Luke Kirby). While Midge is learning to play by the rules (almost), the character based on the real-life comic great is one of this show’s greatest achievements. The two have shared a platonic relationship but this time when they meet in Miami, the sexual tension is palpable. While Lenny makes sporadic appearances in the five episodes that were offered by Amazon for review, I hope the rest of the season has more of him. And that brings us to the elephant in the tastefully set-up room – refusing to acknowledge the racial dynamics as Midge opens for Shy. The singer’s manager (Sterling K Brown) is perhaps the only one with some perspective on the issue because all we get from Midge and Sue is the perfunctory ‘we are the whitest people in the room’. The Marvellous Mrs Maisel is a sum of its parts. It can be a gorgeous and highly entertaining escape but with everything it has going for it, the show can be so much more. I already have a sugar rush after watching the five episodes, now can I have something that feeds my soul? In Midge’s words: ‘It should been something’.
