Stephanie meyer: I think sewers in 1600s London makes sense. I will do no reaserch and get very rich.
Fanfiction writers: if Carlisle stood in a northfacing second story window a few miles south of the thames, in what I have just learned would be Southwack, would the elevation be sufficient enough that he would be able to see the Thames river? I don't know yet but I did find the most beautifully detailed map of 1680s London to drool over. I did also just learn that that area was marshlands in the middle ages, and all the topographical maps of the area seem pretty level so probably not, but I'm having fun so this needs at least three more hours of research tonight.
I wanna reach the level of confidence of Stephenie Meyer repeatedly asking Gerard Way to make music for the movie of the self insert fanfiction she wrote about him
Hey I'm happy that Twilight is coming back but I can never get over the fact that Stephanie Meyer thought it was a good idea to write in that the werewolves have to cut their hair or else their fur would be long & shaggy to maintain.
As if most Native Americans literally don't cut our hair for spiritual reason. We literally believe it's an extension of our spirit. Its painful to cut, it's the evaqulant to cutting out your soul.
That's why we literally only do it when someone dies. Because its to show your mourning. Only to show your love and how much pain you're in.
Not all tribes do this but enough do. I literally went 3 years without cutting my hair once. Some have gone decades.
But naw turn to doggy cut hair regularly. The first set of Native actors they had literally got recasted because they refused to cut their hair. What did you THINK was gonna happen Meyer?
Notice how Booboo Stewart has always had long hair since his Twilight days?
Friendly reminder that there are 750 Quileute. Seven Hundred and Fifty. Think. For reference- how big was your middle school? (around that, maybe?) I think we tend not to understand how personal their inclusion in Twilight was. Smeyer took advantage of them. She's rich off of them and their culture. She exploited and misrepresented them. Seven hundred and fifty people. She could look each one of them in the eye and apologize in one afternoon and instead, she sits on 125 million dollars as if her hands are tied.
Thank you all for your patience and enthusiasm. A year ago on July 14th, 2020 I created this blog. I stayed off tumblr for so many years, but you have all given me such a warm welcome. This website is the reason for the so-called “Twilight Renaissance” and I am beyond grateful. As a token of gratitude I am making this announcement here on tumblr.com long before I announce it anywhere else.
So without further ado, I am pleased to announce that I will be releasing another book called Retrograde! This time from Mike Newton’s perspective! I can’t tell you all of the detail, even though I would love to, but I can tell you a little bit. You all fell in love with my characters, so I wanted to give you a chance to see what they’re up to these days.
Twenty five years after the events of Breaking Dawn, a middle-aged Mike Newton enjoys a perfectly normal life with his family in Juneau, Alaska. However, that all changes when he recognizes the new students his children go to school with.
And here is the cover!
I hope you are not upset that this cover steps away from the traditional cover scheme. After all, it wouldn’t make sense for Mike Newton to be represented by black and red.
Stay tuned for the release date, preorder link, and more details.
Through all these little things, I was able to add the most important quality to my list, the most revealing of them all, as simple as it was rare. Bella was good. All the other things added up to that whole: Kind and self-effacing and unselfish and brave—she was good through and through. And no one seemed aware of that besides me. (x)
its the way we all begged for smeyer to finish midnight sun only for us all to declare we hate it and beg her to do new moon from edward’s perspective instead, for me
A self-insert is defined as “the literary device to have a fictional character represent the author of a work of fiction, either overtly or in disguise.” Meaning that it's a character that can be replaced with the author. It's often frowned upon as a lazy or “cringy” tool in literature as it removes all the difficult work from creating an intriguing character and simply writing oneself into the story, which can be an uncomfortable read when going over the overly personal fantasies the author places invents in their work. Despite this, however, a self-insert can be used properly if the character is well developed and fits into the story in such a manner where the reader can see an actual character instead of the author’s ideal version of themselves in their fantasy world. For example, being overpowered and completely perfect in the view of what the author considers beautiful, admirable, skilled, etc.
Bella Swan is an overt example of a self-insert, which we can determine from her physical description alone in the book. Bella is described to have a “wide forehead with a widow’s peak,” “heart-shaped face,” “brown eyes,” “pointed chin,” “brown hair,” “pale skin,” etc. All of which can also be attributed to Meyer.
Seen above, the similarities between Meyer and Bella’s description from the Illustrated Guide. Also, this image from TV Tropes discussing self-inserts, outlining Stephenie's similarities to Bella’s description.
This aspect of Bella Swan being a self-insert is clear enough, but doesn't really amount to anything. Appearances are the most insignificant trait of a self-insert, in my opinion.
The actually substantial element of Bella Swan being a self-insert is her fulfilling the role of being the ideal version of the author in their set world. Being so incredibly “unremarkable,” and yet garnering the attention of the hottest, most perfect guy in school who absolutely adores her for reasons she can't comprehend.
Bella as a vampire in breaking dawn is fantastical and quite like a fairytale, getting the man she loves as her 17-year-old husband forever (⚠️) where everything is perfect and she's an exceptionally tame newborn, contrasting intensely with Carlisle’s time spent as a newborn in the depths of self-loathing and despair; which of course is not addressed. Of course, she has a power, supposedly an exceptionally rare occurrence, despite the Olympic Coven having about half of their members with powers (5/9, including Renesmee). Also in Breaking Dawn, she not only has a power, but she has one so powerful that Aro is frightened of how she uses her shield in such a horrifyingly powerful way, overshadowing greater powers like, oh I don't know, the fucking avatar as a goddamn vampire?
This gets troublesome with Meyer’s overt racism in her books, as well as her mysticism of indigenous peoples. Appropriating and misinterpreting Quileute legends while inviting her white protagonist to sit in on a council meeting for the elders of the tribe, with Jacob’s line “you are the first outsider ever [to hear the stories],” illustrating Bella’s exemplary uniqueness that fulfills some colonial bullshit fantasy of Meyer’s.
There's more to say about it but I don't think I have the energy to further explain this. Hopefully, this helped :)
I saw this post on Twitter and it made me realise just how much the couples from Twilight are similar to the ones in ACOTAR with their dynamics/vibes/personalities/stories.
Feyre/Rhysand & Bella/Edward
Both couples are the "It couple" from their respective series.
Both couples went through a difficult pregnancy where the woman nearly died.
Stephenie Meyer once explained that Edward used to always think that he didn't deserve happiness and that his relationship with Bella wouldn't last. Just like Rhys.
From a young age, Bella would take over most of the household responsibilities, feeling like she was the adult rather than Renée. You can say that this is similar to Feyre as she provided for her family at the start of ACOTAR, despite being the youngest.
Nesta/Cassian & Rosalie/Emmett
Nesta & Rosalie are both shown as the stereotypical bitchy female character (especially towards the main character of the series) before the audience gets to know them better.
Nesta & Rosalie are only "soft" around their love interest.
Nesta & Rosalie both have a past of SA.
Cassian & Emmett are both the playful and humorous characters in their groups.
Elain/Azriel & Alice/Jasper
Elain & Alice have similar powers as Elain is a seer meanwhile Alice has subjective precognition.
Elain & Alice are considerably the "sweetest" female characters in their respective series.
Azriel & Jasper are both the brooding and quiet male characters of their series.
