It’s not like Stiles had meant to offend Derek when they first met two days ago, he had just been surprised! Caught off guard! Unprepared.

If anything, it’s his dad’s fault.

He had been the one to suggest they hire some extra help after his accident back in May put him strictly out of commission until the new year. But back-injury or not, the cattle cabin must be rebuilt before the herd moves back into the pastures after winter, and there was no way Stiles would be able to do the work all by himself.

And so it was decided. His dad had hired Derek. And when the time finally came, sent Stiles off to fetch him from the train station, neglecting entirely to mention the small matter of the man being a fucking werewolf.

I'd absolutely love some sterek fic recs because I'm trying to broaden the ships I read. I've watched the first 3 seasons of teen wolf but haven't read any fics and don't know where to start. I'm fairly open to reading any content, although I'm not the biggest fan of like the common school/coffee shop etc AUs.

Also I love how you're gotten into blogging hockey recently. Have you read any hockey rpf since getting into nhl? Personally sidgeno and mattdrai have my heart, but like I said I'm looking for new ships to read like sterek.

I will say Sterek has the potential for an age gap concern but I don't read fic where that's written as a predatory thing, FWIW, but I do read some where Stiles is 17 but where I feel like it's handled at least somewhat gracefully

Gravity's Got Nothing on You by @zosofi is great - I really like all their stuff actually!

@kalpurna's Fascination and @drunktuesdays' bigger, longer and uncut are both *gems* - so funny.

We've Written Volumes (in Blood and Scars and Ink) by @notthequiettype is absolutely brilliant, one of my fav fics of all time, way up on my reread regularly list. They only have one other Sterek but I love that one too (and they write hockey rpf but I haven't really dived in there yet!).

The Moon's Gonna Follow Me Home by @turningterrific is stunning. They're SUCH a good writer, although sadly this is their only Sterek (but they have written some amazing hockey RPF as well!).

Every stumble and each misfire by @everchanginginks is fucking phenomenal. True story, I read this fic and then didn't keep track of it but it stayed in my brain, and I spent literally HOURS combing my AO3 history to find it, and when I did, I promptly downloaded it and created the "Best Ever" collection on my Kindle specifically for this fic.

Everything by @suburbanmotel. They are an incredible writer and even more incredible person and I'm so lucky to call them a friend!

I really love @lunacanislupus-22-blog writing but particular favorites are: Feel it like a fever, burning through the night , Spirit grows when love goes away and I know that you love me, even when I lose my head (and I'm not normally one for amnesia fics because they make me SO ANXIOUS but this one is SO good).

Cornerstone by Vendelin is really good too (mind the tags on this one).

By Any Other Name by @entanglednow is fucking phenomenal (and again with the amnesia fics?!?!) and so so well-written. Check out all their stuff!

I really love @devildoll's writing very much a lot! Particular favorites include: Come with Me and Walk the Longest Mile (and I don't usually gravitate to post-apocalyptic fic even though I love the genre in fiction but this one is fucking brilliant); Stand Fast in Your Enchantments (painful and so good); My Heart Comes Tumbling Down (OH MY HEART) and Love, Like a Sentence of Death.

There's Monsters at Home by @wellhalesbells | calrissian18 is a classic and really good! They've written a ton of really great fics (the Hilary Duff lyrics one is a another personal favorite!)

Not Quite Lost (Not Quite Found) by @alocalband is gorgeous. Just. beautifully written.

stuck in reverse by @crazyassmurdererwall is also really good! Definitely check the tags on this one, as it is Stiles still in HS.

Start Small, Like Oak Trees by smallbirds is really lovely. Everything of theirs that I've read, I've really liked.

The First Date series by @halffizzbin - the whole thing is delightful but I absolutely adore the final installment!

I will note that many of these authors also have Hockey RPF fic, JUST SAYING (I really am fascinated as to what that pipeline is??). I've read a ton of hockey RPF as well (sidgeno for sure) and I'll check out mattdrai now!!

I just want to see Derek stop. Just… stop.

Stop fighting, stop pushing, stop trying so goddamn hard. Stop attempting to drown his guilt under never-ending sacrifices. Stop punishing himself because he’s convinced himself he deserves it.

And it’s not giving up. It’s… self-preservation. Because if he loses one more person, if he can blame himself for another single person getting hurt, he knows he won’t recover from it again. It will swallow him whole. And there must still be a tiny piece of him that still cares enough about recovering. About surviving.

So he just… stops.

And instead of trying to be a saviour and a martyr, he just… takes care of himself. He creates a quiet little home in a quiet little place and lives a quiet little life, doing not much of anything and only talking to people out of necessity. Like the lonely kid at the grocery store, and the librarian who always sneaks a comic into his bag when he checks out a stack of non-fiction books every few weeks, and the chatty woman at the post office where he sends letters to Stiles because he promised him he’d provide proof of life at least once a fortnight and they’ve somehow now kind of become penpals…

Derek stops. And he heals. And he finds happiness.

Those are the best kinds of fics.

The thought of touching him sends him into a blind panic, terrifying him as if every touch will hurt him all over again. Stiles can only take so much, after all, and Derek has always been his weak spot.

What are your favorite Sterek fics on archiveofourown?

Okay so here’s the deal! I’m mostly a podfic person, so most of my favorite sterek fics I actually listened to, rather than read. Because it’s a different experience that just reading the stories with your eyes, for those of these that I listened to as podfics, I’m gonna just go ahead and link the podfic. That being said, I know many people are not into podfic and that is totally cool, so if podfic is not your thing, just find wherever on the podfic page it says ‘Inspired by ______’ and click that to go to the original written work. Also be aware that I’m a lover of angst and my choices most definitely reflect that ehehe.

Safety in Silence

It’s a genius take on soulmates. Like 99% of soulmates fics are like, they meet, there is a mishap, they decide to give things a try and live happily ever after. Which is great and I thoughoughly enjoy. But this is like taking that and twisting it into years of delicious angst. I think about this fic SO frequently.

Stand Fast in Your Enchantments

Sterek with nonverbal communication is actually my favorite thing ever (see also: Don’t Speak, later on this list). It’s just so good and I won’t spoil it but you’ve got magic Stiles and shifted Derek and it’s just incredible.

The Threat of Human Sacrifice

The most tender Derek Hale of all the Derek Hales. Mpreg, but listen I don’t read mpreg all that often and this is still one of my all time favorite fics in ANY fandom I’ve been in. If you listen to it, do yourself a favor and make sure you listen to the chapters in order (unlike a CERTAIN DUMBASS. ((me.)))

Misfire

Do I still, not infrequently, fall asleep imagining different ways this could’ve gone? Yes. All of the stiles-briefly-goes-back-in-time fics that I’ve read have been great, but this one. Ohhhhh this one. So so so good. If the ending sits the wrong way with you, I’ve been told the sequel(s?) are meant to help with that, but aaaa it’s so good as is.

Actions Speak Louder Than Words (which actually DOES have a podfic that I’d highly recommend, but since it’s still unfinished, that’s a link to the finished text.)

The longest fic on this list by far, but WOW it doesn’t even feel like it. As you might expect, it’s pretty slow burn, but it’s a rare find in that it is super long, but also interesting the whole way through AND cohesive. Extremely enjoyable read for me. Magic Stiles, mute Derek. (another one that features nonverbal communication)

No Homo

It’s a classic okay just go read it. Everything by this author is stellar and amazing. (Note, the author took her works off ao3, but the Podfic is there so this counts as being on archiveofourown lmao. If you want the written work I’ll find a link for you elsewhere)

Also it’s been awhile since I read it but I’m pretty sure Don’t Speak deserves a place on my favorites.

I fall, I fall, I falter is the short/smutty fic I reread the most because I fking love angst. (Not the happiest ending though fair warning. Not like BAD, but ya know.)

Also if we’re talking smut, I don’t really go in for non-con but I DO go in for dub-con, and Lap Magnet and Build an Ivory Tower are just *chefs kiss*

Also I think about Sell Your Body to The Night quite a lot. One of those really great fics that’s long AND has a variety of detailed smut but also an actual plot that makes you care about them.

I also love Blushing Pretty for something a little sweeter.

Being Found and sequel Finding I think are really special cause I really love how intimate they are.

And I’ll stop with Second Chances which is really short and sweet and I liked it so much I recorded it! It was my first public podfic!

I could literally go on forever (and I realize many of these are sterek classics so if you were looking for slightly lesser-known fics I can add to this lol). There are definitely some I’m forgetting too, if I remember I’ll add them. Enjoy!!!!

Um, there are GPAs on the line, not to mention the whole thing where his dad wants to shoot Derek on sight. Except who he sees as Derek is actually Stiles, and Stiles did not sign up for filicide. Great. Wait...does this mean he's the Alpha until they figure this out? Holy. Shit. **** Derek had stood in front of the bathroom mirror for a few minutes trying to control the panic as he saw himself as Stiles. As the loud mouthed human friend of the pack. He was going to kill Peter. He was going to kill the witch, then he was going to kill Peter. Maybe even resurrect him again just to kill him all over. They were going to have to play this cool. They would have to stay calm and focused. Which is of course why the universe threw him into this situation with someone who physically couldn't be calm and focused. Of course.
