Steter Mini Bang Interest Check

The Steter Bang of 2021 led to some amazing works for the Steter fandom. The mods who ran the event last year have decided to move on and have been kind enough to let me take over (big thanks to @steter-bang-2021)!

You may know me as @teenwerewoofs here on tumblr or as bri on AO3.  A Steter fandom event last year got me involved in fandom more than I had ever been before and I’ve had so much fun creating podfic ever since and getting to interact with all the amazing people in this fandom (huge out shout to @stetersecretsanta2021!). 😍

I LOVE Steter (and I love the people that also love Steter!) so I’m reaching out to see if anyone would be interested in a Mini Bang this summer.  Hopefully, people are excited and, hopefully, it would lead to a Big Bang next year in 2023! ☺️

Steter week at the end of July each year, and this year it will land on July 28 - Aug 3. (And extra exciting for me this year because my birthday lands right in the middle of the event, but last year it was after!)

We're working on the full relaunch of the tumblr for 2024 and we hope to have that and the prompts ready for early May.

Peter Hale knew who he was. He used to be the most fearsome left-hand in the country. He had been a rabid, uncontrolled alpha for a bit. He was a betrayer, a liar, that had pushed what was left of his family away. For a long time, he was sick with himself; now, he was just sick with the world. There had been a war. Tamora Monroe had brought them together to fight a common cause, but they went their separate ways when it was all over. Scott McCall had let him work to protect the pack until the war ended, but he wouldn’t tolerate it afterward. There was no surprise there; Scott had never been his biggest fan, and vice versa. Peter had slunk off in the middle of the night, promising to continue his mission. He would hunt them to extinction, not that he told any of them that.

Then out of nowhere, Stiles Fucking Stilinski had claimed the kill without Peter noticing that he was in the area. What could possibly go wrong?

Peter is cooking dinner, and fuck, it smells delicious—not that he expects any less from his mate.

so I got tagged by @cinematicnomad to pick my top 5 fics, and I thought, this is an outrage! I’ve got 99 fics on AO3 alone! though granted I wouldn’t pick anything not on AO3 since my old stuff is ... not great ... but anyway how I could pick 5? So since I missed fanfic writer’s appreciation day yesterday I decided to appreciate myself, bend the rule, and change the prompt to .... give your favorite fics awards! 

Best Epic:

The Sum of its Parts (1.2 million | T | Teen Wolf | Sterek, Scallison)

What started as a simple "fork in the road" AU became a series and ate my life.  

This obviously had to be on the list somewhere but it’s barely a fanfic anymore, it strayed so far from the source material! I adore every word. Well, most of the words. 

Best Smut:

Get Off (Me) (77K | E | Teen Wolf | Steter)

Stiles hates being left behind with Peter while the pack is fighting monsters, because he never knows exactly what Peter will get up to.

Boy did I have fun with this one. Dubcon smut turns to consensual-but-not-safe-or-sane smut turns to ‘wait did we catch feelings wtf’ smut.

Funniest:

The Lost Cause (18K | T | The Untamed | NHS + JGY)

AU in which Nie Huaisang and Jin Guangyao work together to take down Jin Guangshan from the beginning.

Or: the story in which Nie Huaisang just wants to paint fans and feed birds and he doesn't understand why this is so much to ask.

I may live to be a hundred and never write anything funnier than “you have a praise kink!”

Best Roast of the Source Material:

Adult Wolf (232K | T | Teen Wolf | Sheriff/Peter, Sterek)

As if Sheriff Stilinski doesn't have enough to deal with, now he's been attacked by some enormous dog in the forest, and that's normal compared to what happens next...

Re-telling of seasons 1-3B with Sheriff Stilinski being bitten instead of Scott.

230K words of me writing a strongly worded letter to the writers of Teen Wolf on all the things they could’ve done better. I enjoyed it.

Best Tearjerker:

picking up the pieces (111K | M | The Untamed | LWJ + JYL, WWX/LWJ)

The AU where Jiang Cheng dies at Nightless City instead of Jiang Yanli and she takes her son to raise at Lotus Pier. She and Lan Wangji bond over losing Wei Wuxian and raising their children, and over time, they start to have suspicions about what happened at Qiongqi Way....

This is probably the most poignant thing I have ever written. The whole thing is woven with grief and love. The scenes between Lan Wangji and A-Yuan still make me a little teary-eyed when I think of them.

Best Romance:

An Atypical Courtship (48K | M | The Untamed | LXC/JGY, WWX, LWJ)

Meng Shi dies with her debt to the brothel unpaid, and the madam decides Meng Yao needs to work it off for her. Eight years later, Lan Xichen meets him at Koi Tower.

I generally don’t write a lot of pure “romance”, so I’m really proud of how this one came out. The whole fic is just so soft and loving.

Best Post-Canon:

you’ll never walk alone (21K | T | Not Me | Black + White, Sean/White)

If Black got his way, he would never go back to Gumpa’s garage.

Spoiler alert: Black does not get his way.

Sometimes I finish watching a series and so desperately crave more that I just write a couple more episodes for them, free of charge. This one is probably my favorite of that variety. I just want Black to be happy, damn it!

Best Overall:

What Goes Around (71K | M | Teen Wolf | Sterek, but the relationship at the heart of the story is the father-son relationship between Peter and Stiles)

“Well,” Stiles says, “if they’re going to hunt werewolves, I’m going to hunt them.”

It’s a ridiculous statement from a ten-year-old, but he’s obviously one hundred percent sincere. For the first time since the fire, Peter feels life stir inside him, feels purpose. It’s kismet, clearly. He’ll never meet the child he would have had with Olivia. Instead he’s met this boy, this brilliant, determined, cynical child with a world of potential.

Peter kneels down in front of him so they’re at eye level. “How do you feel about doing that together?”

This might be the best fic I’ve ever written. It’s probably better than most of my original work. I love everything about it, especially the way I used outside sources like news articles and forum posts to show the passage of time. It’s just really good and I’m very proud of it.

Who else wants to give themselves some awards? I don’t really like tagging people but anyone else is welcome to steal the format and shower love upon themselves!

Cora Hale finds out that Stiles has been sleeping in a tree house that's connected to his house and he lives there. Cora & Peter help him fix it up despite his reluctance to accept their help? I think it's a Steter fic or maybe a Sterek one. I'm not 100% sure. I think it had Bad Parent Sheriff too but I'm also not sure on that.

I'm pretty sure that Stiles is waiting until he's 18 and then he'll move out on his own. I think the deputies help him and Cora uses Pinterest to make the treehouse homier.

The fact that user @toastybugguy chose to put their fanon (and blatantly ableist) lies in the Stiles Stilinski tag only confirms their bad faith and shitty behaviour. Their infamous Scott McCall defense squad friends spend ALL their time bullying and harassing people both on tumblr and on ao3 - especially Sterek, Steter and Thiam fans, because Scott/Posey stans are bitter, jealous & obsessed like that - just because they don't like Scoot, or because they prefer Stiles, Derek or other Teen Wolf characters to him, or because they dare to point out Scott's canonical flaws and shitty actions and behavior in the Scott McCall tag; but since Scott and Posey stans are the ones who routinely post their hateful garbage and made up bullshit in the Stiles and Derek characters' tag out of spite, then I guess that we are perfectly entitled to pay you Scott McCall defense squad bullies the same courtesy and post their critics and less than stellar opinion in the Scott McCall tag too *shrugs*

Willow also works for Hux, I feel like? It's an au, obviously, but I'm sure you've all fuckin noticed I only write modern AUs Im an absolute SLUT for them.

I just feel like "They count me out time and time again," and "show me the places were the others gave you scars" are pARTICULARLY good lines for them?

Gold rush is also perfect for any AU were you have Hux feeling self conscious? It's a song that's entirely about not wanting to fall in love, because you think it's not realistic? Like, it's about dreaming how good a love could be and then denying yourself it?

Tolerate it is great for a break up au from Kylo's perspective, absolutely, especially if you make kylo young enough that their age difference is proportional enough to matter, to change the dynamic of their relationship?

Daily Rambles: A Commentary on Nandermo, and Shipping In General

I know I've been on a bit of a thing with this whole Nandermo deal. And, y'know something? I don't do this. I don't. Shipping is usually just a fun little game for me (which is why I tend to gravitate toward rarepairs). Unofficial mainstream pairings? They don't usually get to me.

Please Note: The following isn't meant as hate toward any ship. I'm not tagging said ships, for that very reason. This is purely one broad's experience.

Destiel? Tried it. Enjoyed a smidge of it. But... I didn't really get attached to it, because it didn't seem like it was going to land.

Sterek? I flat-out never felt it. I tried. I did. (I ended up a Steter shipper, instead).

JohnLock? Okay, to be fair, I was a believer in this ship before the show aired, so I guess I was fairly biased. Still, y'all know.

With Nandermo, it just feels... I dunno'. Different, I guess? I genuinely didn't think I would go for them, given my history. I think OFMD and BlackBonnet (GentleBeard, BlackStede, whatever you choose to call it) have given me hope in WWDitS and Nandermo. I have faith in the creators, the writers, and the fact that the actors seem to be embracing the shipping corner of the fandom. Even if we never get canon Nandermo, the journey is still delightful. No one (of importance) seems to be throwing it in the fans' faces that we're making it all up.

It's nice. It's refreshing. As someone who has been in fandom, in general, for more than two decades... I can say that shipping has never felt so enjoyable.

And, y'know, it also helps that the show is superb, even without shipping. Just like OFMD, it's there, it's evident, but it's not the primary focus.

My Most Popular fic by far is a fic a wrote for a Merlin Holiday exchange in 2013; so popular, in fact, that it's on the 5th page of the Merlin/Arthur tag if you sort by kudos, which is insane! Acts of Man (BBC Merlin. Merlin/Arthur): On the morning of their Annual pre-Christmas Dinner, Merlin is shocked to find out that Gwen thinks his boyfriend, Arthur, isn't good enough. But after a glimpse into Merlin's quirky flat, Gwen realizes that she might not have the whole story.

So, hidden gems. These are fics that I love and that I had fun writing, and haven't maybe hit the right audience at the right time.

OK, so my first ever Teen Wolf fic was written in 2014 and it was a Stisaac fic!! I am actually a huge Stisaac fan (and Isaac fan, tbh––seeing the "I came to win" clip was was convinced me to finally watch TW in the first place), though I have only written one Stisaac fic, and I have spent a majority of my fandom time in TW reading first Sterek then Steter... BUT since this was my first TW fic, it's near and dear to my heart, despite how rough around the edges it is. If Not Them (Teen Wolf. Isaac/Stiles): If you’d have told Stiles when he left the house that morning that he would end his Saturday night trapped in his own house with Isaac Lahey, well… Ok, so it wouldn’t have been the weirdest thing that had happened to Stiles. But there had been no supernatural activity on his radar; he had thought he was just going out for pizza with friends.

Continuing on my love for Isaac, for a TW bingo I never finished, I wrote an Isaac/Erica fic where they are just bored and get off together. I don't think there are enough mutual masturbation fics around, do you? Anyway, it's sort of Isaac/Erica in that they are both in this fic, but they aren't a couple and are, in fact, pining after other people, out loud, while jerking off. It's fun. A Little Bit Closer (Teen Wolf. Isaac/Erica): “Well, what do you want to do then?” “I don’t know. I mean, the alphas are away and it feels like we should take advantage of it somehow,” Erica explained. “What do you normally do when you have the house to yourself?” “Well, that’s not something that happens all that much,” Isaac said. “Right, so when it does, don’t you do something you wouldn’t normally do? Whenever I get the house to myself, I eat popcorn for dinner while watching a bad movie. Or I drink wolfsbane wine and dance around the house in my underwear.”
