Blue's Clues is knocking it out of the fucking park when it comes to thinking about their audience.
First we had that PHENOMENAL pride parade. They included a lot of people and categories and it gave me chills just watching it because holy shit they didn't hold back.
And now we have Steve. Addressing his audience directly. Specifically addressing HIS audience. The ones who grew up with him and the ones who had to watch him leave. We didn't even ask for an apology! Because we understood. We weren't mad that he left we were grateful that he was there. I just started my senior year of college and it just made me happy.
Not to mention the fact that all three hosts (Steve, Joe, and Josh) are still very much a part of the show and are friends in real life. It's like they're brothers. Literally.
“You remember how when we were younger, we used to run around and hang out with Blue and find clues and talk to Mr. Salt and freak out about the mail and do all the fun stuff? And then one day, I was like, “Oh hey, guess what? Big news, I’m leaving. Here’s my brother Joe, he’s your new best friend,” and then I got on a bus and I left and we didn’t see each other for like a really long time? Can we just talk about that? Because I realize that was kind of abrupt.
I just kinda got up and went to college. And that was really challenging by the way, but great because I got to use my mind and take a step at a time and now I literally am doing many of the things that I wanted to do.
And then look at you, and look at all you have done, and all you have accomplished in all that time. And it’s just, it’s just so amazing, right? I mean, we started out with clues, and now, it’s what? Student loans, and jobs and families? And some of it has been kind of hard, you know? I know you know.
I wanted to tell you that I really couldn’t have done all of that without your help. And in fact, all the help that you helped me with when we were younger is still helping me today, right now. And that’s super cool, I guess I just wanted to say that after all these years, I never forgot you. Ever. And I’m super glad we’re still friends.
You look great by the way. Whatever it is you’re doing, is working.”
That 25th Blue's Clues Anniversary actually made me realize something...
You know what was so good about Steve Burns? What separated him from other preschool tv show hosts? He didn't talk to the child audience like they were babies. Even tho it would've been appropriate, he didn't put on this phony, cutesy energy that drove parents crazy or would've driven our adult selves crazy either.
The guy just simply talked. He talked to little us like we were his fellow co-eds at the water cooler in an office or something; like we were equals or actual friends.
To this day, I've watched some reruns of old school Blue's Clues and never realized how calming his voice is?? How casual and chill?? Even the hosts my other preschool favorites like The Wiggles, Barney, or Dora The Explorer would've made me tap out to a degree bc of their over the top energy. But no, Steve was one of a kind as a host and I gotta thank him for that.
"You guys look great, today. Whatever it is you're doing it's working."
It's the fact that Steve ended his message like this. He knows that we're the generation struggling the most (ESPECIALLY with self-image). We're practically drowning in expectations and he comes in saying this.
Idk maybe I'm thinking too much into it but this is the main part of his message I keep coming back to.
