comprehensive ranking of gethsemane renditions (that i am familiar with)
1. ben forster— do i even need to explain. his voice is absolutely insane. he’s so ANGRY which is sooooo appealing to me. glenn carter brings the hopeless sadness but ben forster jesus is PISSED and i LOVE IT!!!!!! he’s literally angry crying.
2. steve balsamo— imo his « WHYYYY » is the best out of anybody on this list. really good rendition. super fucking impressive pipes on that man. if he did not emote a single time he would still be near the top but he DOES and he KILLS IT.
3. ted neeley— ROCK ON MR NEELEY!!!!! i love his voice it’s so fucking rock and roll. his high note kills me dead everyyyy time. i love everything about his gethsemane he brings the resentment the despair the rock and freaking roll.
4. glenn carter— i am biased here i will freely admit that. i am not immune to his beautiful eyes. anyway i like how his voice wavers i like his falsetto he sounds like he’s on the verge of tears the whole time.
5. ola salo— i don’t really have that much to say about this one. the emotions were there. the vocals were there. i love his voice. great rendition.
6. ian gillan— before you skin me alive let me explain. i felt like there was not enough emotion in it. obviously his voice is impressive but i wasn’t sold on the performance.
7. paul nolan— get those broadway vocals out of my jesus christ superstar. sorry mr nolan your voice is great just not my thing. just a little too clean.
8. john legend— surprisingly solid considering the circumstances. the falsetto was pretty funny
??. lin manual miranda—
i will not be taking constructive criticism at this time or ever ❤️ thank you

Okay you’ve sold me on watching Jesus Christ Superstar, but which one should I watch?
(70s heavy metal scream) HELL YEAAAAAH
in my opinion a good production to start with is the 1996 London one. steve balsamo plays jesus, he has a gentle voice and hits all the notes beautifully (look out for the WHYYYY G5 in "gethsemane (I only want to say)" in particular). here's a playlist link in youtube and here is the album on spotify. it's solid, rounded.
here is the same production but with a different cast. also solid
many also say the australian 1992 production is excellent, and you can watch in in full on youtube here! this is not for whatever reason my favourite version, but it's still jcs so it rocks. the instrumentation is delicious
the musical is based on a 1970 concept album with ian gillan and murray head, which is here. here is also the first broadway production.
of the more watchable versions, many really like the 2000 film! I don't know where to watch it in its entirety but the songs are on youtube. here is the first song (if you skip the overture) "heaven on their minds". judas in this one (fella in the leather jacket) is INCREDIBLE his voice is so raw
there is also the film from 1973 which stars ted neely as jesus and he is simply legendary in the role, here is him singing "gethsemane". also stars an epic judas, here is "heaven on their minds" clip. I don't know where this film would be available to stream but the songs are on spotify!
also available for viewing on the interwebs somewhere is the 2012 area tour starring ben forster (jesus) and tim minchin (judas). here is heaven on their minds, again. tim minchin is awesome in this role, obviously.
and as a special treat, a production you can actually watch in full on youtube: the 2014 swedish production. the songs are translated into swedish. in many productions the kiss between jesus and judas is quite chaste, but in this one they full-on make out, which is a plus. ola salo plays jesus, I have also seen an english version where he plays judas in helsinki in 2022. twas awesome.
there's many many many productions of this musical, even I haven't heard all of them and I'm OBSESSED. being a rock 'n roll gal I like the more edgy ones with the high notes screamed and lots of electric guitar

Figure in Repose, oil on board by Steve Salo
“We are complex of mind and spirit. My intent as a contemporary portrait artist is to explore the human psyche through painting these complexities. I am concerned with portraying this aspect rather than focussing on the surface level alone.”
— Steve Salo, Australian artist
