"he's really trying you know." there's a slight defensiveness to her tone, attention seemingly more taken with the dirt that gathers on her shoes, the back and forth of a swing that creeks. from aunt janet's kitchen. shirl watches them, and they're all ten years older than every memory she has of them here, wrapped in this strange family reunion built of silences. it takes a moment before she's smiling at @cathaedra. "i think it'll stick this time. luke really wants it to stick."

hi mike, saw someone say your ask box was open and i came running! have you ever had any ideas as to how the crain family would be getting on now a few years later/what they're doing? it's always in the back of my mind wondering if creators also wonder about those sort of things themselves once their project has ended. thanks so much & hope you have a great day!
I do think about that. Quite a lot, actually.
The Crains took on lives of their own for me. I'd never written long form before, so it was the first time I lived with the same characters for that long, and for such extended arcs. Here's where I think they are, a few years later:
Shirley: I think that Shirley and her husband overcame her disclosure of infidelity. She'd been closed off for so long, after the series ended I think she found some peace in her life and opened herself up to her marriage. I think she also began to find kindness again. They ran the funeral home together, but Shirley found purpose in helping people handle grief and loss with empathy and kindness. Her oldest would be just about ready to start college now, and I think that would have her looking back and realizing that she always remembered her childhood as seemingly endless... but now she sees just how fast it truly goes by.
Luke: Luke stayed sober. He's six years into it now, and it's gone so well that he's also become a sponsor. That doesn't mean he's immune to the struggle, far from it. He still walks up to that edge sometimes. Oddly, it's in those moments that the "Twin Thing" kicks in... and he feels an inexplicable and complete sense of love. He knows that's Nell's, and that always pulls him back from the brink. He never did find Joey, or find out what happened to her. And sometimes he still wakes up with nightmares that he's on the floor of the Red Room, or that Joey visits him with her runny-egg eyes. But no matter how hard it gets, he feels what Nell feels for him... and that always pulls him through.
Theo: Theo and Trish got married, and moved far away from New England. They currently live in Portland. She still works with children, but enjoys a much smaller patient pool. She specializes in the kids who are hardest to reach, and she's sought after for her unique and uncanny ability to connect with them. She doesn't wear gloves anymore, but she still avoids the very crowded places. She and Trish take long hikes, grow their own pot, and travel frequently and spontaneously. They're considering a surrogate... and if it's a girl, they're going to name her Eleanor.
Steven: Steve and Leigh have two kids, and are thinking they might stop there. He never wrote about what happened at Hill House, but he still writes. Science fiction. Leigh recommended the genre as a way for him to focus on the future, not the past. He likes it a lot. It's pulpy, but it's earnest. He maintains Hill House, as it is his responsibility, but he doesn't enter the property beyond the gates. He has a rotating collection of people service the property itself, always during the day, and only for a few hours at a time.
Hill House stands quietly and silently in the hills. There is something different about it. Still the same energy, but without the malice. Steve assumes this is because of Hugh, Nellie and Olivia, who maybe curb the most malicious energies of the house from within. While shadows still walk in the windows at night, there are no living souls there to see them. Mostly, Steven imagines the spirits inside spend most of their days sleeping. And if they cannot sleep, he imagines Mrs. Dudley singing softly to them on the wind.
There is grief, for all of them. There are nightmares. Horrible dreams of moldy rooms and phantom hands. They meet twice a year, usually without spouses, to catch up and raise a glass to Nell, and their parents. There is a lot of healing still to do, a lot of therapy, a lot of introspection. But there is peace, too. There is love. There is forgiveness.

So I made this AU a long time ago that combined The Haunting of Hill House (2018) and Lemony Snicket’s “A Series of Unfortunate Events” where The Crains join VFD and try to thwart Olaf’s plans of getting The Baudelaire’s inheritance, as well as just trying to help the kids in general. The Crains join after the events at Hill House under the recruitment of Aunt Janet (as well as Hugh, who thought VFD would protect them from harm). They leave VFD after The End. The Baudelaire’s end up in Shirley’s care. :)
If anyone wants to hear more about it- whether it’s their sibling dynamics, relationships with VFD as a organization, dynamics with The Baudelaires, who they’re friends with in VFD, etc. I’m all open for questions! I unfortunately don’t have a name for this AU? I’ve been calling it “VFD Crains” or “ASOUE Crains” but it doesn’t fit either way. Here’s some information about The Crains as well as moodboards. Enjoy!

Entry No. 38: I need to forgive my feelings
September 3rd, 2022
They're just feelings, after all. I can't help them. I also need to forgive myself for feeling those feelings. I thought of that while I pondered my issues with my parents. The main issue is, I don't think I should have issues with my mother. She supports me. She loves me. She accepts me. I am the problem. Well, my feelings are. Who wants to feel neglected, abused, abandoned, or hurt, right? I can't help my resentment. I can't help my fears. My mother loves me, but I am a wounded child. Still.
I think about Haunting of Hill House a lot. It's probably my favorite series ever. I want so badly to write something like it. "What if the kids in horror movies grew up?" Hill House says, they grow up to be messed up adults. I love stories of trauma. I've been thinking of Nellie a lot. How she inherited her mother's suicide. I've used that concept in one of my poems. I think suicide is inherited or contagious. At its core, Hill House is a story of intergenerational trauma. I love the Crain kids. They are so messed up in their own little ways. I love thinking about their relationships with their mother. Steven the eldest who witnessed his mother's downward spiral, who realized he and his father were leaving Olivia in the house too. Imagine how that felt after his mother's suicide. His fear of succumbing to the ghosts of mental illness is so real to me. He thinks his father is the real spectral presence in the family—how he did and said nothing. He is so afraid of becoming like them, don't you see? Like his parents. He tries so badly to be different, to break generational curses. I feel so much for him. I love Shirley's anger. I love her guilt. I am perhaps most kinning to her. I think Shirley inherits more from their father than the mother. She wants to be the fixer. She doesn't say or express shit. She's just angry. A part of me wishes she (or one of the kids) was angry at the mother as well. I can see her resenting her mother for choosing death over them. It's one of those feelings that we don't normally publicize as human beings, but we truly feel. Theodora the walled-up mediator. She distances herself from everything that it turns her numb after touching Nell's body. I love, love her desparation to feel something from Nell. True bargaining. "Please, please, I just want to see something from her this once please please". Luke and the horrors that still follow him. Abigail's death. Ghosts. Nightmares. Suicides. Who wouldn't do drugs after all that shit? Lastly, Nellie. The one I said inherited her mother's suicide. When I think of killing myself, I think of my brother. I don't want the chances to be higher for him. Nellie's mother literally tried to kill her and Luke. That alone would be enough reason for most people to end everything. But Nellie was so good. She was sweet. She tried. She tried. No one picked up. No one believed. Suicide is terrifying. I don't want to miss any calls. I don't want to leave anyone on read. I can't regret anything when someone kills themself.
I'm scared of death. I'm scared of ghosts I cannot ever face. I'm scared of my feelings towards my mother and father. I'm scared of being alone.
My favorite song this week is Haunted House by Florence + The Machine. My heart is like a haunted house. I am not free at all. We never escape our ghosts. We don't get saved by the priest or the cops. We just learn to live and cope with their spectral presence hanging in our hearts. We are not free at all.

Preference: The Haunting
— first kiss
Characters: Eleanor ‘Nell’ Crain, Luke Crain, Shirley Crain, Steven Crain, Theodora ‘Theo’ Crain
Warnings: alcohol
Requester: anonymous
Request: “Can I request hill house preferences for what the first kiss would be like with Nell, Theo, Luke, Shirley, and Steven?”
A/N: hope it’s alright!!
— ELEANOR ‘NELL’ CRAIN
Tumblr media
You and Nell have your first kiss after going out on a date with one another. Nell had been so nervous to go on the date with you, working herself up the week leading to it. She likes you so much, and she really doesn’t want to screw it up, but thankfully, the date goes well and Nell falls even more in love with you. By the end of the night, she really wants to kiss you, and is grateful when you make the first move for her. The kiss is gentle and shy, but the both of you pull away with huge smiles on your faces, and dissolve into laughter.
— LUKE CRAIN
Tumblr media
You and Luke had been friends for some time, and were dancing around your feelings for one another. Luke was definitely into you, but was afraid of making a move and risk ruining your friendship. Your first kiss is spontaneous, when Luke decides he can’t keep his feelings a secret any longer, so he pulls you in for a kiss. The kiss is short, and takes you by surprise, and Luke is an awkward mess afterwards, apologising profusely. Before he can fret further, you respond by pulling him in to kiss him back, and Luke is relieved you like him back.
— SHIRLEY CRAIN
Tumblr media
You and Shirley were coworkers. Admittedly, your job isn’t the most romantic, but you had developed a crush while working together. After a long day, the two of you had decided to grab drinks together to wind down. A few drinks in, you found yourself wanting to tell Shirley the truth about your feelings for her. You confessed your feelings, and Shirley would want to have a conversation about what that meant about your relationship together. After getting that all cleared up, you’d ask if you could kiss her, and she’d happily agree to it.
— STEVEN CRAIN
Tumblr media
You were a family friend of the Crains, and were always closest to Steven out of all of the siblings. Steven had agreed to be your date to a family event that you were attending, and although the two of you tried to play it off as casual, you were both hiding feelings for one another. You had a lot of people coming up to you asking about the two of you as a couple, and you eventually found yourself discussing it. You eventually revealed you liked Steven more as a friend, and, not knowing what to say to you, Steven pulled you in to kiss you instead.
— THEODORA ‘THEO’ CRAIN
Tumblr media
You met Theo a bar. You were instantly attracted to one another, drinking together and chatting while enjoying the music. Theo enjoyed your company, thinking that you were fun to be around, and Theo wasn’t shy about inviting you back to her place. It didn’t take long for you and Theo to start making out when you finally reached her place, and although Theo made the first move, you wanted it to happen as much as she did. You and Theo had felt a pretty strong connection to one another, after all.

How We Rot
Tumblr media
Steven x Reader/Nell x Reader    - 628 words  -   Part 1 of 1
Warnings: this is a short horror story, it’s designed to be suspenseful/eerie and discussed themes of decay and death.
Notes: The title and central theme is inspired by the motif from “I am The Pretty Thing that Lives in your House a film on Netflix. Tried some new stuff here, this is what I get paid to do on the outside so lmk what you think!! The reader has no gender , and although it is technically Steven x Reader/Eleanor x Reader that is all mentioned in passing. - - -
“This is how we rot,” you thought letting your fingertips graze over the molted wallpaper. You, Steven, the rest of the family- this was how you lived. Crumbling to pieces in front of each other as if everything had been fixed.
Hill House stood steadily against the never-ending night, new holes in the roof where there hadn’t been any before. It felt like your body, your heart- full of holes and mold determined to consume you from the inside out. Inching each day over your flesh leaving bits of your skeleton exposed, much like the wooden beams hanging over your head.
You never expected to fall in love, let alone twice, especially not in the same family. You never expected to feel suffocated in love. You never expected to rot while you were still alive. You weren’t sure if the decay was real. Much like you weren’t sure if Steven’s ex-wife’s accident was real. Or if Eleanor’s accident was real. Hill house had a funny way of twisting things: especially perceptions, especially necks.
You’d read all of Steve’s books, you knew the family you were marrying into. Or so you thought. Then you learned about his ex-wife, how she got twisted around in the darkness that was the Crain family tree, how she split herself open from the inside out over the side of the mansion’s staircase’s bannister. The house had been empty for decades. She shouldn’t have been there.
You shouldn’t be there.
But you had to, you had to try and see the woman who’d been haunting your dreams and your marriage for the last ten years. Not his once wife, but his sister. The smiling face over the mantle, the photograph in his back pocket. The figure that dances through your head at night when you should’ve been sleeping- teasing you with lingering smiles and open arms that you could never reach.
Your footsteps were heavy as you walked up the once grand staircase in the foyer. It almost felt like you were walking into the open maw of some creature, waltzing through rows of unseen jagged teeth with every hole you sidestepped over.
Looking back, you would wonder where the lights came from, the warmth- if you had missed a hole or a soft patch of wood and fallen through. In the end you’d wonder if Steven understood where you’d gone, and that it wasn’t his fault the house had poisoned all of them; for better or worse.
At the top of the stairs there was a calm hush as you walked into her arms, she looked just like her picture- possibly more beautiful and all of a sudden the house around you was beautiful, you couldn’t smell the rot anymore. You couldn’t smell anything anymore.
You entered the tiny room and drank from your own matching cup of stars and met the couple who were in some universe supposed to be your in-laws. You knew in another moment Steven would tumble through the door, that all the pieces of your previous life would fall back in place. For you it would only be one more moment and you’d have everything you ever wanted in one room. The family, the woman of your dreams, and the man you married.
For Steve it would take ten more years before the house clawed its way back down his throat, encouraging the skin to fall from his bones. For the house, the room would be empty and covered in spores eating away at the organic tissue. This was how you rot. All of you, together- even in a million years when all of the Crain’s had come home and all your perfect ghosts wandered a perfect house- the house would refuse to crumble, and continue to rot

-meeting in a book store because CAN YOU IMAGINE?!
-you’re looking at his book, and he comes up next to you and is like “i heard it’s bad.” and you’re like “no, i’m sure its not. this sort of thing is pretty interesting.”
-you flip it over and see his face on the back and just freeze, turning to look at him and he’s grinning, “hi, i’m Steve.”
-”so should i buy the book or do you want to get coffee and tell me about it instead?”
-”wow.” he’s so shook at your line and tbh you kinda are too
-so you end up grabbing coffee and have a great conversation
-you exchange numbers and go your separate ways
-he keeps pulling his phone out to message you then putting it away because he doesn’t want to seem too forward
-but damn does this sexy boi like you
-he gives up and calls you and you meet up again
-after that you just click and you end up going out a lot
-then you end up waking up next to him and it just feels right
-his family is a huge part of his life
-you know that because he’s told you about it (and you may or may not have read his books)
-this could go either pre Hill House final episode or post so imma make an executive decision here and say it’s after the final so spoilers ahead fam
-hearing a lot about Nell and it’s a sore spot for Steve but you’re there for him as much as you can be
-when he introduces you to his family for the first time they’re all wow’ed by you
-Theo shaking your hand and her face lights up as she turns to give Steve the thumbs up
-Shirley smiles nicely but you can tell she’ll be a tough cookie to crack
-Luke is a happy bear when he meets you because he’s heard a lot about you from Steve
-so much family time
-Steve is fiercely protective of you, he’s lost enough people in his life
-and he’s gone through enough relationship issues (family or otherwise) to have learnt that he needs to put in effort
-so he puts in so much effort with you
-because he loves you so much and he never wants to loose you
-he reminds you he loves you all the time
-so many hugs
-he always hugs you before you leave for work or anything because he wants to make sure that if anything happens to either of you, you ended positively
-yeah he can be kinda morbid but its because he’s faced loss and death is a reality for him
-like him not answering Nell’s call before she died.
-he always answers your calls
-took you a little while to realize why
-he just needs love and assurance and positive vibes
-not really fighting. he hates fighting. he doesn’t want to fight anymore
-he’s so ready to work on any issues the two of you have
-sitting next to each other while he writes
-helping him talk out the writing, you have no idea how much help it can be to a writer to just talk out the things you’re writing
-sometimes when he’s been writing too long and needs a break you just take off his glasses and force him to cuddle
-he needs cuddles
-so many cuddles
-his dimples because yes
-his family loves you because they can see how happy you make him
-he tells his family everything about it because they’re all super close after... the incident at the house
-yeah, dating Steve means dating the fam

Tumblr media
Lights passing. Houses and people flying past in a blurr. Your knee nervously bounced up and down at a fast pace. Your fingers fiddled just as nervously.
Steve, you and someone from rehab were driving through the city to pick up Luke. You didn’t quite remember the name of the rehab lady and you felt bad about it, but your mind was in such a hazy and anxious state that you could only think about Luke.
It was only a few hours ago that Steven had called you to tell you that your best friend had died.
The familiar sound of your ringtone rang through your apartment. You were in the middle of going to the kitchen to get something to eat, but you turned around at the sound of your phone ringing.
“Hey Stevie,”, you greeted your friend as soon as you had found your phone and recognised the person calling you. “what’s up?”, you asked innocently, not knowing what was to come.
“Y/N?”, you heard your friend ask. It sounded like a sniff that followed, but you knew that wasn’t possible. Steven wasn’t one to cry. Unless-
“Y/N?”, he asked again, because you hadn’t answered. “Yes?”, you asked. “Y/N, something terrible happened....I-..”, he sniffed again. Your heart began racing and your breathing increased.
“Steven?”, you asked frantically. “Steven, what is it? Tell me, Steven. Is it somehting with Luke?”, you asked. “No, no.”, he breathed out, but although hearing that nothing happened to the love of your life, you were still frightened.
“It’s- It’s Nell.”, he brought out. Your heart stopped for a single second, before Steven continued speaking. “She’s dead.”, he said.
Silence. No thoughts, no feelings. For a second, void filled you. Then it came all flooding back. Your heart dropped into your stomach and did weird turns of aching. Tears stinged your eyes, but you wouldn’t just yet let them fall. It wasn’t true. It couldn’t be. Your best friend wasn’t dead.
“Nell’s dead.”, he stated again before you heard him let out a sob. Your knees suddenly became all wobbly just before they gave away and you sat on the floor. You didn’t even notice, but a scream must have come out of your throat.
Your hand flew to your mouth to prevent any further screams from escaping your mouth. Tears ran down your cheeks as you started crying uncontrollably.
That’s how you reacted to your best friend’s death. You couldn’t imagine what it must feel like to be told your twin sister was dead. So that is why, besides the fact that you were his girlfriend, you and Steven drove to Luke’s rehab center together.
As you found out Luke wasn’t there, your anxiety increased even more, if that was even possible. You were worried something had happened to him as well.
So now you were on the way to get Luke at the adress he had given you. The rehab lady, whose name was Paige, you somehow now remembered, slowed the car at the sidewalk. Before the car stopped rolling, you had already thrown the car door open to get to Luke. You left the door open as you stepped towards the boy you fell in love with.
He was neither wearing shoes nor anything warmer than a shirt, although he was famous for his oversized sweatshirts. He rubbed his left arm out of coldness and saw as your jaw dropped as you scanned his face. He was beaten up.
His handsome face was covered in bruises and he looked lost. You couldn’t stop the tears from falling down your face. You lunged towards him to bury your face in his chest so that he couldn’t hear you sobbing. He already had had his arms opened for you to fall into.
He kissed the top of your head and brushed his hand over your hair. “I’m okay, darling. I’m okay.”, he whispered into your hair. But besides the fact that you knew he had yet to find out his sister was dead, you felt him shiver.
You pulled away from him as you heard Steven step towards the both of you. “Luke,”, he began and you clapsed one of Luke’s hands into yours. “Something happened,”, he continued.
“Wha- What is it?”, Luke asked anxiously and your heart broke solely from the breaking of his voice. Silence fell between the three of you as Steven breathed in.
“Nell-”, he shook his head. “Nellie’s dead, Luke.”, he told him. You clenched your hand around his and closed your eyes.
The boy you loved was already beaten up and broken, he didn’t deserve to hear that his twin sister died. Nobody deserved that, but surely not the boy standing next to you, who would never hurt another human being.
“Wha- How?”, he asked, now gripping your hand as well. “Suicide.”, Steven sniffed. “No, it wasn’t.”, Luke stated without  doubt in his mind.
You pulled at your hand and pulled your boyfriend into your arms. Only when he felt your arms around him, heard your soothing voice, was when he started crying. He sobbed into your shoulder and cried on the whole way to the airport and you cried with him.
And you wished, more than anything, to be able to take his pain away and have your best friend back.
take a look at my other luke crain imagine x

Altercation- Steven Crain
Tumblr media
Pairing: Steven Crain x Reader (Platonic)
Characters: Steven Crain, Shirley Crain, Theo Crain, Luke Crain
Warnings: N/A
Request: Anon- Imagine the reader has similar abilities to Theo. Steve doesn’t believe her and snaps at her at the funeral
Word Count: 987
Author: Charlotte
You hoped that you would never have to lie one of your siblings to rest, it was a nightmare that you hoped you would never be faced with. Certainly, you doubted you’d be laying Nell to rest first out of your siblings. You were the youngest of the six Crain siblings and from a young age you were forced to face death and loss. Due to your age when you were in Hill House, you had little to no memories of it and that meant you didn’t remember your mother nearly at all. It was hard to connect with your siblings as you couldn’t recall what had happened and you didn’t remember much before moving in with your aunt.
Soon enough your whole family had fallen apart. Your mother was dead, your father was rarely there and that left you and your siblings to support each other, until those relationships soon fell too. Steve pushed the others away with his novel, moving across the country to be alone; Shirley did her best to keep up appearances doing her best to keep a wedge between herself and her older brother; Theo had gotten her PhD and threw herself into work but even though she lived with Shirley, she didn’t connect with the rest of the family; Luke fell down a rabbit hole of drugs and drink, taking from each of your siblings and yourself until he couldn’t take anymore and had to admit her needed help; and then there was Nell. Nell still held onto the trauma of Hill House and ultimately the house was where she had died. Out of you all she was the one that held innocence and tried her best to reconnect everyone, at least in the end she had gotten you all together, it was a shame that it was due to her death.
Each of you had had a moment alone with Nell and as you went to brush a loose piece of hair from her face, you accidentally brushed her cheek. Coldness rushed down your spine as images of Hill House flooded through your head ending with falling from the spiral staircase. Out of your thoughts, you gasped for air, pain hitting your neck. The pain and shock mirrored what you had felt early in the morning of the day that Nell died.
Once everyone returned to the room, you could see the tension in the air. Your siblings sat as far apart as they could from one another, whilst Luke stood by the coffin looking down at his twin’s corpse.
“I can’t believe she killed herself,” Shirley sighed, crossing her arms over her chest.
“She didn’t,” Luke said, not turning away from the coffin.
“What?”
“Nellie didn’t kill herself,” you piped up.
The eyes of your sibling all snapped to you.
“How do you know that?” Steve questioned.
You knew that the others, well certainly Steve and Shirley, thought that Luke was crazy or just high, when he said that Nellie hadn’t killed herself. He claimed it was a twin thing and you weren’t certain whether that was the case, but you could understand why they had their doubts. Nell was found in the house where your mother died, hanging from the stairs that your mother had fallen from, it didn’t look good.
“I touched her and saw it all,” you whispered.
Even though Theo had similar abilities as you, they all doubted that you had them too as you had hidden them for a while until you had learnt that Theo was the same. They thought you were seeking attention and lied about it all and you truly wished that it were true.
“What do you mean?” Theo asked.
“When I touched her cheek, I could feel everything, feel her pain, her fear, her loss and I saw her fall, but she was talking to mum, she thought she was getting her locket. She didn’t know she was wrapping a noose around her neck and taking her life,” you explained.
Steve stood from his seat, and his expression was far sourer than you had ever seen.
“No is not the time for your lies Y/N,” he said sternly. “Nellie killed herself and you’re trying to make it about you.”
You rose from your seat, squaring up to him even though he was taller than you and also stood on the other side of the room.
“Maybe if you didn’t call your sisters liars, one of us wouldn’t be dead,” you frowned.
“How are you blaming me?” He asked.
“Nellie told me all about how you called her a liar. Told her that everything she was feeling wasn’t true and you made her feel like she had turned crazy. However, she wasn’t crazy, was she Steve? She was scared of what that house had done to her and of what she saw, that’s what killed her in the end. I know she phoned you the night she died, you ignored her, didn’t you?” You hissed.
“Shirley ignored her too. Not that that is the point. Since Theo told us of what she could do, you decided to jump on the wagon. You don’t have to lie to get our attention, especially not when our sister is dead,” he retorted.
You grabbed your handbag and slung it over your shoulder.
“Whatever you want to think Steve is fine. At least I didn’t sell out with a book that belittled and destroyed our whole family’s image,” you huffed. “I’m going back to my hotel, I’ll be back for the funeral tomorrow and then we can go back to pretending we aren’t related.”
With that you stomped out of Shirley’s home heading to your car to escape the hellish family reunion that you weren’t surprised had gone terribly. Even though you wished your relationship with your siblings were better, you knew the truth about what killed Nellie and that was enough for now.

REQUESTED BY ANONYMOUS
IT was shocking to hear Steven’s sister blatantly speak ill of him - right in front of the both of you. You looked to your boyfriend. He was livid, yet when you read his eyes, it was crystal clear he has had slander thrown at him before.
“That’s not fair, Shirley. Yes, you’re clearly not on good terms with him, that gives you no right to cross a line like that.” Shirley scowls as you grabbed Steven’s hand, and squeezed it.

My only complaint about The Haunting Of Hill House 2018 is that Steve Crain looks so much like Shane Madej that I expect him to say “demön” everytime he opens his mouth

Imagine being there for Luke when things get rough.

Luke X Reader
Being abruptly woken up is something you absolutely loathe, except for when it's an emergency. So when you realize it's your cellphone ringing that's brought you into the land of wakefulness, it's like all your grogginess instantly vanishes.
The number calling isn't one programmed into your phone, but the area code is local so you answer without hesitance. "H-Hello?"
"Y/N? I-It's Luke. I need y-your help."
Holding the phone to your ear between your head and shoulder, you kick off your blankets and scramble out of bed. "Where are you? I'll come get you." Knowing full well that Luke should be in rehab and the number he's calling from is not the facility he was last at, you know something is terribly wrong. You hurry to your closet and pull on pants, then shoving your feet into a pair of random sneakers.
"I-I messed up. My f-friend left and I- I tried to help, but she.. I'm so sorry."
"You don't have to explain yourself to me, babe. Just tell me where you are."
"I'm so- I'm so cold. M-my arms and legs.. they're stiff." His chattering teeth and stuttering voice absolutely breaks your heart. His voice is thick with emotion that has your own throat tightening in response. "It-It-It's like withdrawal," Oh crap, "but I- I didn't use. I wa- I wasn't using, but I- but I feel it anyway. You- you believe me, right?"
"Luke? Luke, listen to me. I need to know where you are so I can come get you."
"Please tell me you be-believe me, Y/N."
You pause by your apartment door, heart pounding and your soul aching for your friend. "I believe you, Luke. Ever since I found you again after all the years we missed together, you never once lied to me. Now where are you?"
Luke prattles off the address to some street corner and what the buildings near him look like, and you quickly grab your keys off the hook by your front door. As you're racing down the stairs, forgoing the elevator completely, the call disconnects. You frantically make it to your building garage and after getting into your car you speed off to where you have an idea Luke's at.
Throwing your car into park near the sidewalk, you leave the engine running and pop the trunk. Climbing out, you grab a blanket before jogging towards your friend who's huddled on a bench. Right away you notice he has no shoes and when he glances up, you gasp at the abrasions on his face.
"L-Luke?"
"I-I'm so cold," he stammers.
The plain tee and thin warm-ups do nothing to prevent the cold from chilling him down to his bones, but his face is sweaty so you have no idea what's going on. Still you wrap the blanket around his shoulders before sitting next to him on the bench and pull him down so his head is in your lap. "It's okay. I'm here now." You smooth your hand over his forehead, fighting back tears as you lean over him to kiss his forehead. "Sshh. I'm here now."
A set of headlights wash over you and you hunch protectively over Luke. Two people get out of the car, but only one approaches. "Luke?"
"H-Hey, Steve. You remember Y/N?"
Luke's older brother stares at you in surprise and you weakly smile at Steven- the eldest of the Crain brothers. "Hey, Steve. Long time no see."
"Y/N?"
"Mhm. Circumstances could be better, I guess. I'm guessing Luke called you either before or after me."
"I wasn't aware you and Luke-"
"We met again in rehab." Steven goes quiet and understanding seems to dawn in his features. You shrug. "I've been seven years sober. I just hang around the facilities to talk to the newbies and offer them some encouraging words."
"I have so many questions, Y/N, but I really need to get Luke-"
"Yeah, no. Go ahead." You help Luke sit up and your heart breaks all over again at his bowed head and hunched shoulders. Steven mumbles something to him before pointing him in the direction of a woman standing near their car, and Luke goes without uttering another word as he rubs at his neck. When Steven turns back towards you, you frown. "Is everything okay?"
Steven sighs. "No. Everything is just so- it's Nell, Y/N. She's dead."
Tears immediately spring to your eyes again. "W-what?"
"It happened yesterday. We'd been trying to get a hold of Luke, but he left the facility and.. Shirley has her now. Tomorrow's the viewing if you want to stop by. Luke's going to need someone he trusts."
You sniffle and nod frantically. "Y-Yeah. I just- I'm so.. wow." You exhale deeply, choking back a sob. "Oh, Nellie."
Steven wraps you in an awkward hug as you work to contain your grief. "I know." After a few moments, he releases you. "I really should get going. I still have to tell Luke before taking him to Shirley's. Dad's flying in as well."
"Of course. Give my condolences to the family and let Luke know I'll be waiting by my phone. I'll see you guys tomorrow."
As Steven turns away you quickly wipe away your tears. Then heading back towards your car, you wave at Luke who's watching you very closely. Steven waves at you as well and you climb back into your car while letting your tears freely fall again before you carefully drive away.
The following afternoon is a tough one. After Steven had taken custody of Luke, you later got a phone call from Luke as he sobbed about his twin and the fact that he wasn't there for her when she needed him the most. Apparently Nellie had hung herself in their old house and Luke kept going on and on about how he felt it- that, that was why his neck and limbs were so stiff. You cried with him on the phone until Steven finally made him hang up, but he only hung up after you promised you'd be there for the viewing that was open to the public.
Suffering through the drive later that evening in a newly purchased black dress, you collect yourself as much as you can as you drive closer and closer to the funeral home.
Then when you finally get there, your heart is pounding erratically as you slowly pull open the door and slip inside. Just inside the door is a small sitting area before you enter the main room where all the chairs and casket reside, and Luke is sitting there among several other individuals. Under the fluorescent lights the markings on his face look a lot worse.
Steven notices you first, you smiling and sheepishly waving before he nudges Luke. Then when Luke spots you, he's up out of his seat within the blink of an eye which startles everyone but Steven.
Luke's entire frame dwarfs you as he wraps you up in a hug and you return the embrace as best as you can. You can feel him shaking slightly and you squeeze him tighter before smoothing your hands up and down his back.
"I wasn't aware Luke had a girlfriend."
Glancing to the side to see who muttered that, you spot the culprit. When you pull free from Luke, you wipe at the corner of your eye while staring at his sister. "Not his girlfriend. Though if I remember correctly, I'm pretty sure you and Nellie married Luke and I when we were kids."
His sister's eyes widen as she stares you up and down. "Y/N?"
"Nice to see you too, Theodora."
She gapes before stepping forward hesitantly and you smile at the fact that she still wears the gloves. When she cautiously embraces you, it leads Shirley to do the same with a watery laugh. She then introduces you to her husband, Steven hugs you in greeting after, and all eyes turn to who can only be their father Hugh.
Time has not been kind to Hugh, especially given what everyone is gathered for, but you still muster up a smile for him. "Hey, Mr. Hugh. I'm so sorry about, Nellie."
"Y-Y/N." Hugh stumbles forward, his hands falling to your shoulders as he looks you up and down. Then releasing a breath he'd been holding, he chuckles softly before embracing you. "It's so good to see you, kiddo. How did you know about-"
"I- I called her last night," Luke says. "Y/N works part-time at the rehab I was at. She e-encourages us to stay on the straight on narrow."
Every Crain looks to you and you shrug. "Seven years sober. All the other addicts look up to me." You see their smiles falter and the pity enter their eyes. "Don't." You shake their head at them. "I messed up. I owned up to my mistakes and cleaned up after all my siblings abandoned me. Mom and Dad were the only ones who stuck it out, and now I'm working three jobs to pay them back for all the shit I put them through."
"You're just one tough cookie, aren't you?" Hugh muses.
"Only sometimes, but today is not about me," you say. "Right now we are here to remember all the good times we had with Nell and celebrating her life. Then later, later you can ask all you want." That seems to pacify the Crain's and one by one they leave to take their seats. Luke stays behind and you glance up at him, reaching up to rub your thumb lightly against one of his abrasions. "You holding up okay?"
"Mostly. Thank you for coming."
"It's Nellie." You smile sadly. "She was my friend as much as you were." Reaching for his hand, you squeeze it before holding tight. "Now come on. Lets go share some of our fondest memories before we say goodbye."
After a very tearful remembrance, tensions between the Crain's seem to explode after all the guests leave. You want so bad to stay and support Luke, but the family has long buried anger that's apparently coming out on tonight of all nights. So after quietly bidding Luke a good night, you take your leave after promising him to call you when he got to wherever it was he was staying.
Nearly two hours later as you're getting ready for bed you get a phone call, but it's not from Luke. It's from Steven and Luke's gone missing, he having taken Shirley's money and Theo's vehicle. They think he's going to slip and you immediately want to help, but Steven tells you to stay put. If worse comes to worse and Luke seeks you out after, they rather have you at home where you can intercept him instead of him wandering the streets again.
Another few hours later and Steven calls. Luke's overdosed.
You so badly want to break down, but you know you need to keep yourself together in order to get to the hospital. So after jotting down what hospital they've taken Luke to, you quickly get dressed yet again and race down to your car. Then driving to the hospital as fast as you can, you park haphazardly before racing for the front desk.
But before you can reach the desk, Theo's intercepting you. "Y/N! Over here."
When you reach her, you grasp her shoulder and make sure to not touch skin. "What happened?"
"It's that house. That stupid, stupid house," she mumbles. You stare at her and she rolls her eyes, huffing. "Don't pretend you don't know what I'm talking about. That house was alive and you know it. We all did, but we didn't want to believe it."
You blink back tears. "I never told anyone, but I saw.." You trail off and clear your throat, shaking your head clear of one of your most terrifying childhood memories. "I just- I get it. Is he okay now?"
Theo's lips quirk to keep them from trembling. "Steve had to revive him. He was- technically he was dead, but Nell- Steven got him up."
"Can I see him?"
"Yeah. Come on."
When you get to the room, the door is already opened. Shirley and Steven are on either side of the bed as they quietly speak with Luke, but when they spot you they both vacate their spots.
"Thank you for coming," Shirley says, kissing your cheek in greeting. "He's been asking for you."
"It's Luke. I'll always be there for him." Shirley smiles even brighter at that and steps out, Steven following her. Then stepping up to the bed, your small smile falters at the sight of the dark bags under his eyes and the needle mark in his arm. "Oh Luke."
"Shh. I'm okay." He tries to comfort you as you start to cry and you immediately reach for his hand closest to you. Sandwiching his hand between your own, you hunch over and lay your head against his abdomen. "I'm sorry. I didn't want-"
You choke on a sob and he quiets down, and you straighten back up. Then wiping away your tears with one hand, you offer him a shaky smile. "Don't apologize. Theo explained," you say.
"Will you stay?"
"Of course."
"Will you help me get my bed back at rehab?"
You huff a quiet laugh. "Do you even have to ask?"
Luke smiles. "I'm really glad we reconnected, Y/N."
"As am I. Now stay put, I'm going to go stock up on snacks before making myself comfortable." Leaning further up over the bed, you lean down to kiss his cheek. But Luke turns at the last second and you catch his lips, and you jerk back in surprise. Your eyes widen and after a moment passes, Luke smirks. You narrow your eyes as you say, "You did that on purpose." He feigns innocence. Then pursing your lips in thought, you eventually sigh. "Hold onto that thought. We need to get you on a good path before we try to pursue anything."
Luke nods. "I'll keep that in mind."
Chuckling quietly, you then take your leave. And outside the room all the Crain siblings are smiling at you.
"Not a word," you tell them as you narrow your eyes.
But Theo being Theo, she just has to say something. "You two are adorable. My younger self was totally right about you."
"Theodora!" You groan. "I just- you- ugh!"
The siblings chuckle as you stomp off, Theo's voice following you. "Love you too, sister-in-law."
