Marc makes his way into the small convenience store near your flat. After his patrols as moon knight with Steven and Jake, he always made a routined last minute stop to the store.

He picked up a couple of items that you needed, and making sure to grab some of your favorite ice cream that you had forgotten on the list.

His lips curled slightly at the long list of different chocolates and caramel on the label, affection blooming inside his chest.

His concentration stops when he feels the vibration of his phone in his pocket. He picked it up, immediately knowing it was you.

He expected some kind of message saying that you forgot something on the list or telling him to get home faster. What he wasn’t expecting, however, was a picture of you—brightly smiling—with a perfect view of your breasts.

His eyes comically widened, and he felt himself choke on air. “Jesus fucking—” He fumbled his phone, grabbing it quickly and smacking it against his chest.

He was breathing heavily, before practically sprinting to the checkout line. He stops, hurriedly placing the items onto the conveyer

belt. He impatiently thumped his index finger against his thigh as the old woman in front of him. She shakily, and at a snail’s pace, scans one of her items. His eyes flickered to her basket and sees that there’s still about nine more items.

He sighs, a hand over his mouth as the ache of his raging hard on sets in. He felt his cock twitch at another vibration of his phone.

By the time he got home, it had been well over fifteen minutes. You were perched on the bed, patiently waiting for Marc to burst through the door.

You smirked to yourself as you pictured his disheveled figure, hands running through his raven hair—eyes wild with a certain gleam in them as he sprinted through the streets of London.

You hear the jostling of keys and a certain click of the lock before Marc busts through the door. His face was in a usual frown, maybe one a bit deeper than normal.

"Hi, baby." You say, almost purred it out of your plump lips. Marc doesn't say anything back, just pants. His chest heaved up and down as he took in your almost naked for.

He made long strides across the flat and onto the bed, not wasting any time to put his arms around you. "Did you think you could send that and get away with it, sweetheart?"

His voice was dripping in anything but sweetness. Instead, it was drowning in a promise. He presses a harsh bite to your collar bone, making you jump. "Marc—"

He doesn't give you time to react, hands squeezing your breasts and his lips kissing every part of your supple skin, making his down to your aching core.

He laughed at the high-pitched whine that escapes your throat. "You shouldn't have done that, sweet girl." He looks up at you, a stray curl springing in front of his face.

He knew you weren't sorry what so ever, despite the sheepish look that you conjured on top of your face. It was cute, that he'd have to admit.

I'm probably kicking a hornets nest, but I do think villains in media should be allowed a chance for redemption more often. Yes, even the ones that kill. Thing is, while I do like to say media doesn't directly alter things in real life, certain portrayals of ideas and actions in media will often time reinforce fears or standards that most people hold. When you have disabilities, sexuality, gender presentation, or even just weird quirks played off as jokes in media, it often times comes off as a joke in real life. And it's the same thing for villains.

Some villains are best left as villains, those that are written with a character arc to continue getting worse, usually dwelling deeply on an ideal they hold that tends to make things worse that they actively choose. But most villains in media aren't like that. Villains in comics are usually made out of choices beyond their control. Bad luck, experiments gone wrong, thrown or tossed away by society and loved ones, created by others and thrown shunned when no longer needed. Some are created by abuse and neglect, some fall on hard times and don't have the right support to get themselves out of whatever hole they're in.

But its not just comics that use this. She-ra and RWBY have a mix of villains that are created from trauma and abuse, some that choose the path on their own, but most seeing it as their only option or the only thing they know. In Steven Universe, the main villains thoroughly see what they're doing as the only way. In ATLA and Korra, fear is a driving factor for a lot of the villains.

But the big thing a lot of people miss with all of these antagonists is that oftentimes, the only separation between them and the heroes are the circumstances that brought them there. Catra was abused by the same person Adora had been praised by. Entrapta was manipulated and lied to, abandoned by most but embraced by the villains for being different. Cinder and Neo were abused and neglected. Neo started acting out while Cinder was given a choice of life or death. Hazel ran on grief, Salem was punished by the gods for not being able to accept loss, Zuko was punished and thrown out by his father, Azula was neglected and treated as a monster by her mother... and of these villains listed, there's only two I can think of that most people didn't want to die.

But killing off a villain is a disservice to many stories and to how we see justice in real life. People make mistakes, are pushed into situations where getting better isn't easy, accidents can be life changing, and it's easy to shrug them off as never being able to change. The reason we need redemption arcs is so we have a narrative tool to see people getting better. To give a choice that many may not see. A well written redemption for a villain, tailored to the needs of the character in the story, can show us that viewing certain people as monsters or irredeemable is detrimental to how we pursue justice and order. And just like characters in a story, there is no one way to be a good person in real life. For some, it takes effort and rehabilitation, recovery and kindness, a second chance to try to do things differently.

But if all we do is kill off villains in stories, what does that say to all the accidental villains of life? If fictional characters can't be given a simple narrative tool to show things can change, then why give anyone chances in real life? If we're all judged and condemned by forces out of our control, then why try to be better. But seeing fictional characters being able to change, be given the narrative tool of redemption to change, that can make the difference to hear for someone who needs it.

Steven (2022) - Finally home after a mad (but enjoyable) dash around Europe, that involved three countries, new friends, rescheduled flights, lost luggage, and broken trains! Those last parts were less enjoyable, but it was all worth it in the end! 😊 . Could be better. Been a lot worse (which i am happy to Unpack sometime). It's a work in progress.

DID is the biggest diagnosis. He's been thought of schizophrenic and delusional for claiming to be brought back to life and carry out the will of an Egyptian moon god. The System was also thought to be part of the whole Khonshu thing. However, it's accepted that the system has DID and was brought back to life by Khonshu. The god reorganized their brain to an unknown degree.

Marc also has PTSD and depression. He is ableist towards himself. He'll project his failures and faults to be the system/DID's fault. Cool lines about how he's better alone and doesn't want to be loved so he always wins? The words of a deeply depressed, isolated man trying to scare someone. He tries to do the right thing at the expense of himself with the only tools and coping mechanisms he knows - violence. Normally, he does not kill (nor really terribly maim) often. When he crosses a line he set for himself, he's horrified.

Recovery is not linear (and comics) make it so he has to relearn the lesson that it's okay to let Steven and Jake front and have their own lives. That they are better when they work together instead of try and fit into society's normal.

Marc's currently in Avengers-mandated therapy to see if he was a threat to the world (again). He also has seen a DID specialist in the past. He's had some really lousy therapists in the past. Like "oh, framed me for crimes" level bad. Current one is good, Baruch haShem.

I think Steven and Jake have their own Traumas where it would be good for therapy. But -hand gesture-

as always, i pull from a mix of canons! steve is from the same universe as tony (which i guess is the same universe as peter, which is ?? whatever we want it to be), and i use a combination of 616 and mcu for backstory and influences. basically! comics childhood, mcu becoming cap, mix of everything after (no secret empire lmao; also not mcu-dead) ; i’m always very happy to shift stuff around/specify/work with y’all for plotting to make things fit!

super soldier serum: artificially enhanced physiology; peak human strength, speed, durability, agility, reflexes, stamina, recovery, mental processing, senses; advanced longevity (the wikipedia page literally says he has “perfect cells.” this includes perfect teeth and very good hair.)

although he grew up in brooklyn instead of the lower east side, i otherwise take steve’s family history/dynamics from 616 instead of the mcu--steve’s parents, joseph and sarah, were poor irish immigrants. his dad was Not Great TM and died when he was pretty young; his mom passed away when he was a teenager. he had a semester of art school, but dropped out to join the army, partly because he couldn’t afford to stay, partly because fighting for the country his family had given so much for felt like the right thing to do

steve’s got a bit of a complex about the steve/cap divide. he loves being captain america, most of the time. but he knows he’s more of a monument than a man to most of the world. he’s made his peace with it, and he’s played along, but it’s nice when he can just be steve. very few people see him that way (see: bucky, who he grew up with as a brother; tony, who was instrumental in helping steve adjust to life after the ice, and is one of the few people to treat him like a regular person; peggy, who knew him before he was cap, etc)

along those lines! captain america doesn’t swear. steve rogers does. exactly 2 people know this (bucky and tony), as far as he’s aware. he’s a scrappy little new yorker at heart. of course he’s got a foul mouth.

he doesn’t drink. some of this is because the serum means he can’t get drunk. some of it is the good old clean-cut image they drilled into him back when he was on the uso tour. a lot of it is because of his father

he’s an artist! this is very important! it’s pretty much just a hobby, but he’d love to be able to make a living on it. is that an impossible dream? yeah, probably, but so was turning into a genetically engineered super soldier. he particularly likes sketching faces and memories; he has been trying but failing miserably at learning digital art (he was also color-blind before the serum, which i like to think means his relationship towards colors and paints tends towards the abstract and stylized, because he basically taught himself color theory twice)

he spends quite a bit of time at memory lane. please don’t make me explain this too much if i think about it too long i will start to cry

HOW DOES YOUR CHARACTER FEEL ABOUT EMPEROR DOOM?

You’re asking Steve Rogers, Captain America, the Sentinel of Liberty, how he feels about a masked megalomaniac self-proclaimed emperor? Sure. Okay. The answer, of course, is absolutely not. Steve’s lived for a very long time, and he doesn’t have any more time for Doom. Sarah Rogers raised her son to do no harm, but take no shit, and Steve’s taking no shit. He’s up there in the resistance working to take him down. He was, quite literally, made for something like this. A different time, a different world, a different tyrant, maybe, but it’s all the same. Tyranny is tyranny; freedom is freedom.

HOW DOES YOUR CHARACTER FEEL ABOUT THE BATTLES? ARE THEY TRYING TO AVOID THEM? OR ARE THEY EAGER TO JUMP IN?

The battles are barbaric. No one should be forced to fight in a gladiatorial contest. It’s inhumane. He’s been the dancing (punching) monkey before, so many lifetimes ago, and he wouldn’t wish it on anyone. He’s neither actively avoiding nor seeking them out, but Steve is absolutely using them as yet another reason Emperor Doom is extremely bad news. He’ll fight if he has to, and he’s not too worried about winning, but he doesn’t want to have to. He’s a soldier, not a gladiator.

WHY HAS YOUR CHARACTER ACCEPTED THEIR JOB POSITION? WILL THEY USE IT TO GET CLOSER TO DOOM? OR WILL THEY USE IT EXPLOIT HIM? OR DO THEY SIMPLY LIKE THEIR JOB? 

Steve runs a support group for people struggling with multiversal displacement (and living under the omnipresent gaze of Emperor Doom). They meet twice a week, sometimes in Frigga’s, which Thor has generously lent out (and provided complimentary fruity mocktails with the little umbrellas). Steve knows what it’s like to leave behind a life, to wake up in a new, unfamiliar world, to lose everyone and everything you knew and loved and have to keep living. He’s done it. It’s awful. No one should have to go through that alone. Steve can fight Doom as Captain America all he likes; as Steve Rogers, the least he can do is try to make the rest of their lives a little bit better.

CAUGHT ‘22

2022 is unlikely, it seems to me, to go down in history as a banner year for popular movies. But even in less auspicious years, there are always some good flicks, and some good or even great scenes or performances in movies that aren't so great overall.

Out of what I saw, here are ten movies that stood out as best for me this past year:

Nope--Jordan Peele's latest is probably the best UFO movie since Close Encounters, though it has a more sinister edge. It's wildly original, funny and creepy sci-fi/horror, yet it also carries the heroic charge of a good western.

Good Night Oppy--This documentary about the Mars rovers Opportunity and Spirit has interesting information about the Red Planet, but it's really about the way the NASA nerds anthropomorphized the robots and fretted over them and cheered them on and ultimately grieved over them. In an entirely unpretentious way, the movie hints at the question of where sentience comes from.

The Duke--This pandemic-delayed release was, I thought, perhaps the most overlooked and delightful movie of the year. Jim Broadbent is splendid as Kempton Bunton, a cab driver, factory worker and anti-television fee protestor who in 1965 confessed to stealing Goya's Portrait of the Duke of Wellington from the National Gallery in London; Helen Mirren is his fed-up wife. The direction, by the late Roger Michell, is warm, graphically lively and period-rich.

Everything Everywhere All At Once--Family drama, immigrant saga, sly comedy, martial arts actioner, Matrix-style sci-fi adventure and more are mashed-up in this freaky yarn from writer-directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert that tries to live up to its title. It's epic, intimate, silly and profound. All at once.

Thirteen Lives--Dramatizing a technically complicated rescue mission in detail, Ron Howard is in his element in this moving account of the rescue of twelve Thai kids and their soccer coach from a flooded cave in 2018. A little tough if you're claustrophobic, but a true feel-good movie.

The Whale--Brendan Fraser gives a luminous, possibly generational performance as Charlie, a morbidly obese English teacher trying to reconnect with his furious estranged daughter. Directed by Darren Aronofsky, the movie is a little heavy and one-note aside from the star, but Fraser's radiance shines through the prosthetics.

Gabby Giffords Won't Back Down--Infuriating because of what Giffords lost when she was shot in 2011; inspirational because of how much she got back, and how courageously she refused to give in to despair. Directors Julie Cohen and Betsy West build the movie around how central music was to Giffords' recovery.

The Fabelmans--In Steven Spielberg's loosely autobiographical coming-of-age yarn, scripted by Tony Kushner, the focus is largely on the parents, beautifully played by Paul Dano and Michelle Williams. The movie isn't a grand slam, but it's fascinating, and it has the best final shot of the year.

Marcel the Shell With Shoes On--This feature expansion of the 2010 viral short by Dean Fleischer-Camp, with Jenny Slate voicing the tiny title character, is sunny and hilarious, but with improbably dramatic and poignant undertones. Isabella Rossellini is exquisite as the voice of Marcel's "Nan."

The Banshees of Inisherin--Martin McDonagh's black comedy about the agonies of friendship goes so sour in its later acts that I almost didn't put it on the list. But the brilliance of the initial conception and, especially, the magnificent acting of Brendan Gleeson, Colin Farrell, Barry Keoghan and Kerry Condon demand its inclusion.

I also loved him making fun of Steven. I've read so many fics from the mcu version maybe doing that and teasing steven, that the comic version having a vague taste of that has ME vibrating at high speeds. Like YEAH BABEY WE'RE NOT TOO FAR OFF!

Steven chewing Marc out for losing their money was so funny too, like YES DRAG HIM, HOW IS HE EVEN PAYING FOR HIS LIFESTYLE WITHOUT YOU STEVEN

The fact that this issue goes "actually Marc's DID isn't the problem and his system has NEVER been the problem, the problem is Marc trying to negate them to appear more respectable even though it comes at a high mentally taxing cost for him" like FUCK

fuck it's so important to me that their talk went this way and that in the end Marc ACCEPTS he needs Steven and Jake to be fully funcional.

Idk I'm. For some reason in my old age (lol) I've become Less Fond of narratives revolving around mental illnesses and Their Absolute Cure being The Right and Goodest path for a character, and that character getting all their issues solved in two three steps. Suddenly stripped of their condition, their Cured version is The Happiest One.

Because first of all it doesn't work like that!!!

And this is not me being like "fuck recovery man, we'll always be fuckin depressed or borderline or (insert other mentall illness here)!" BCUS NO THAT'S NOT WHAT IM SAYING

What I'm saying is that those narratives i mention completely SKIP the recovery and coping process. Suddenly You Can Be Fixed In The Blink Of An Eye.

And i hate that! There's NO fix! But there's ways to recover, to gently heal, to sit down with yourself and understand that your condition is part of you, it has marked you, and you're a new version of yourself because of that. There's no previous version of you that you can go back to. And that's okay.

...At least, that's the kind of narrative i find comforting. Might not be for everyone. But i feel it's a bit more responsible when dealing with these kind of topics, instead of mentally ill folks suddenly being fixed from Their Horrible Conditions, and aren't you glad this character Isn't A Disgusting Freak anymore?

Much to think about.

Take Me By The Hand

This will be a short comic about Jasper at the Change Your Mind pool party. It will be inspired by the Sheppard song “The Best Has Yet to Come.”

I got really inspired by the song a while ago when something really bad in my life finally ended. I reconnected with the song today and could not help but picture Jasper being helped by her new friends.

I am so glad Jasper came back the way she did. She is so strong and has so much to work through, just like I do. The comic, I believe, will be very instrumental in my recovery and it is very important to me.

First page will hopefully be up tomorrow.

1. Are there any characters in your fandom or faceclaims you refuse to RP with? Who and why?

No? Not yet? I guess the closest is since I don't write MCU!MK, I don't do threads with other MK blogs. Which I'm not bothered by. Not knocking it, just not my thing. Sometimes I use OI, sometimes I use OJC as FCs because that's my choice.

2. Are there any plot tropes you are sick of/refuse to RP? If so, what are they and why?

I'm selective about OC children. I don't really do ship drama for the sake of drama. I want them to be solid. Or, if there's an issue that they need to work on, I want to explore them working on it than misunderstandings.

I guess I could do scenes I don't write anymore.

6. Is there a character that the rest of your fandom adores that you just don’t like/are indifferent to? Who is the character and why?

Fandomized MCU!Steven. I enjoy MCU!Steven. I think he's a good character. I don't like how his fun edges are sanded off.

7. List three honest flaws your favorite character has and talk about how those flaws make them problematic.

Time to roast Marc.

Internalized ableism hurts himself and the system he lives in. Toxic need for control the system to prove he's better than his past and not "crazy" is extreme. It isn't the system's existence and other mental illness(es) that makes Marc dangerous. It's Marc's choices. It isn’t fair to Steven and Jake to put their lives on hold, the body on the line for years in comic time. Though, that's also on the writers and changing the Canon from the OG personas/covers. Still the question of identities but different.

Self-hate and his tendency to push people away poisons his relationships. Also writers but also Marc. But, looking at his career, it isn't out of character.

You know what would be a wild twist in the “Moon Knight” show? If they pull off a Lemire-style twist and reveal that the show has apparently all been in Marc Spector’s head the whole time. Like he just wakes up in a psych ward, wondering what’s going on.

Also, some of the ways that Marc’s mind can trick him into believing that his adventures were all in his head:

1) Comics Arthur Harrow was a doctor. So maybe MCU Arthur Harrow is going to be revealed to be Marc Spector’s doctor/therapist. That’s why he’s trying to “save” people.

2) Ammit judging people is revealed to be Arthur Harrow giving people their medical diagnosis. The guy who passed the test is someone who is going to make a successful recovery. The old lady who failed the test learned that she has an incurable disease. That’s why Ammit “sees into their future” and why Arthur wished she could live to see their future.

3) Steven Grant turns out to be a doctor who welcomed Marc into the ward. That’s why Steven wants to be a tour guide.

4) The trauma that caused Marc’s breakdown was the death of his mother, hence why Steven keeps calling his mom.

Of course, it’ll be revealed that this was all an illusion, but it’d definitely be one hell of a trip. Plus, this would be an interesting way to actually dive into Marc’s backstory and learn how he developed DID. It’s a very Mr. Robot-style of exposition/storytelling, which works in this instance since Moon Knight also features a protagonist suffering from DID.
