If the economy rice stalls are still in the midst of preparation, mum will usually go to Choo Chiang Roasted Meat Noodle House (珠江烧腊面家) to buy their Pork & Shrimp Dumplings Noodles (水饺面). It is thin yellow noodles or mee kia for me and mum will ask for extra two dumplings to be added. Not sure if you noticed but the dumplings are getting less plump with more of the flappy wanton skin now, a sign of cost-cutting… :(
Also from Chong Pang is this savoury Sticky Rice or Glutinous Rice (糯米饭) topped with crunchy peanuts, fried shallots and a sprinkling of spring onions. Mix some of the chilli sauce to give it a spicy kick to start off the day.
Made jasmine sugar suman (which I also snuck into SAINTS OF STORM AND SORROW) and I'm in heaven, I usually bulk batch my sticky rice cuz it's so much more work individually wrapping each rice cake but they're soooo good! I'll post a recipe soon
Don't cry just fry some chopped onion and diced garlic in some oil, (and maybe some green chillies if you want) once the onion has browned at the edges, add in some halfed tomatoes and put the lid on the pan, wait for it to soften then mush it all up with whatever your heart desires, add salt to taste and serve with sticky rice, ghee (clarified butter) and a fried egg
Chal Bap is a special rice dish served for Daeboreum (the Korean full moon festival). That doesn’t mean it can’t be eaten for casual everyday meals, though. It’s a simple dish to make, with just five ingredients, and is an easy way to switch up your usual bowl of rice with something a little more interesting.
Fried Glutinous Rice (炒糯米饭) or Chinese sticky rice that mum bought in her morning trip to the market. Came topped with fried peanuts, fried shallots and spring onions. Drizzle with a little of the chilli sauce and you are good to go.
