im watching a retrospective about Majora's Masks dungeon progression and realizing a little more every time he says "this game took a lot of very brave steps out to not be ocarina of time" that my disappointment with totk isn't out of place. I've been told "it's breath of the wild 2, why did you expect it to be different?" but like.. it's it's own game. why is it the exact same but with an arguably worse iteration of the story?

#i actually have a very long list of reasons i dont like totk but yall have heard all of them a million times before #he makes a point of showing how the 3ds remakes ruined a lot of majoras masks unique boss fights #and i agree completely. i think its emblematic of how zelda has changed as a franchise #if the most casual non gamer would be frustrated by a puzzle or fight it needs to be dumbed down NOW! #vs how the games used to be almost mythical. like how people STILL talk about the old water temples #how it used to be an EXPERIENCE to go thru dungeons. it would take hours #it would feel like something #the quote unquote dungeons in totk are the subway surfer tiktoks of ingenuity. its so disappointing #totk is only better than botw in 2 facets. it handles fantastically. and tulin. thats it that's all it did to be its own game #oh and the brave choice to not even mention revali by name which is fucking hilarious #genuinely so disappointing that they can have more money and man power than god and the games are worse now

#mp answers #i've been trying so hard not to be annoying to my bnha friends but if you will allow me to push this for this ask let me say 🙏 #if you're afraid of the episode count for one piece the manga is a lot quicker read while being just as enjoyable because the art style is #an actual delight. its great its fantastic im absolutely in love with it #the series is soooo good and i know luffy can seem unappealing to people before they start but he's just SUCH a great character & continues #to be even now. the story is SO GOOD the characters are SO GOOD... theres so much lore and world building that its insane #if you read the manga we get 'cover stories' on what's going on with previous characters to see what theyre up to even though we moved on #from where we left them. a lot of these cover stories blend into the main story so well its just seamless #there's one where we get introduced to a character we dont see hundreds of episodes into the anime and they show up like; during the second #saga. the series is about traveling to other islands and every single arc has been tied to another in some way or form that shows up later #even if its sagas and sagas later- it still becomes relevant again!! it's a huge ongoing story and there isnt a single arc that feels like #it has no purpose (sans filler in the anime-but even then!! some filler arcs are really entertaining!) #it's emotional! its sad! its downright stupid and silly but GOD... you can feel the love that oda put into this series and his characters #and the emotions in the expressions and the messages the story gives off it just makes me UEUHGHHAHGHH!!! #it's all about the adventure and the romance of it all! its about the freedom it brings and bringing freedom to others! #its a series where treasure should be a focus given its pirates and the its a giant treasure hunt for the one piece and yet! and yet so man #of the characters treasures are things that are not coins and gems but people and promises and family and and #im going to EXPLODE i love one piece

I watched the Devil Judge recently and I really enjoyed it, especially the complex and ensnaring relationship between Kang Yohan and Kim Gaon. I think the series really demonstrates the power of creativity and themes all complimented by the stellar acting of the main cast. It was enjoyable being seduced by the narrative and the modern and dystopic world it presented, with interesting questions posed about corruption, populism, fascism, mob justice and the characters that inhabit them that are very relevant to our own world.

One of my favourite things was how instinctive the fury and retribution was. At the press of a button, so easy and convenient, people didn't think about the ethics, they just wanted to make evildoers suffer, and have the power to do it, and the more desperate they became, the more unthinkingly vicious and sadistic, the easier they were to manipulate. The show is very good at making the audience feel a part of that as well, with all the lies and half-truths the characters tell, and I felt myself taken along for the ride, baying for blood with the mob at points even knowing it was a slippery slope for society.

After all, what Kang Yohan offers is very tempting, which is why I suppose he really is the Devil Judge.

I've been trying to muse why Tom Wachowski from the Sonic Movie works as a good character whereas all the other Generic White Dudes from similar live action/animated mixed movies failed. I'm talking movies like The Smurfs and Alvin and the Chipmunks, because let's face it, the Sonic Movie falls neatly into that genre.

TL;DR of my insane ramblings: Tom punches Eggman in the face, and that means everything to me.

Maybe it's because Tom isn't written as an asshole? Like, yeah, he definitely has his five minutes of "I don't know who you are, weird talking animal, why would I want to help you?" -but that's just it. It's five minutes. For the rest of the runtime, Tom spends his time getting to know and like Sonic. It feels like a lot of the other Generic White Dudes seem to barely tolerate their cartoon companions, despite the movie claiming that they've learned some grand "lesson" from their inclusion in his life. Tom has no third-act breakup, no Liar Revealed, no contrived misunderstandings or sudden betrayals of Sonic- he acts like how a decent person would. Somehow this is revolutionary. (Oh, and he actually loves his wife. Somehow this is also revolutionary.)

Maybe it's also because Tom slides naturally into the wacky cartoon hijinks instead of desperately trying to stay out of them. Films like Smurfs and Hop and Alvin and the Chipmunks constantly have the cartoon characters "ruining" the Generic White Dude's normal life with their presence. Tom's life and plans are ruined by Sonic, sure, but this is because Dr. Robotnik becomes his antagonist, too. Tom sees his house getting totally ruined by the cartoon villain who's hunting the cartoon animal and, instead of blaming the cartoon animal for it, he gets mad at the right person- the villain! Instead of lamenting "why are these talking animals happening to me?", he takes stock of the actual situation and goes "woah, this asshole wants to hurt this kid, that's not okay" and then proceeds to do something about it. He's got stakes in the outcome of the cartoon hijinks, which makes his presence in them feel like a natural inclusion rather than a random coincidence.

You get the sense that Sonic matters to Tom. The events going on in plot affect Tom. For Christ's sake, he gets a full character arc over the course of the runtime! Tom is a fully integrated part of the Sonic movie, core to it's DNA- you couldn't replace him without changing everything.

Because no other Generic White Dude besides Tom Wachowski would punch Eggman in the face.

FRANCIS LAWRENCE RELEASE THE EXTENDED CUT!!!!!

ramblings on Li Ming (and Heart) and homosexuality

moonlight chicken has so many things to offer in terms of technical beauty and interesting themes but what i cannot stop thinking about is the different ways they approach homosexuality in the story.

we have Wen who has a rainbow flag on his desk and pictures of him and Alan on the wall. Wen, who openly flirts with Jim and has no qualms talking openly about his one night stand. Wen, whose step father knows about his sexuality and is close enough with him to discuss his love life.

Kaipa we don’t know too much about. But his mom knows and is supportive and some of the vendors and the chicken family seem to know. But if anyone was questioning in what reality this show is set with all the class discussion and corona featuring, his part of the story shows that homophobia exists and he is worried about how he fits in with his own family, the expectations of his mother and possible the awareness that he makes the family he has “different”.

Jim is arguably even more visibly gay than Wen in terms of what we see throughout the show. He opened the shop with his ex, they prayed at the temple together and even though he objected due to proprities sake eventually they loudly declared their love to each other and the whole neighbourhood knows. Wen somehow feels like he is living in the remnants of a bubble: his circle of friends seems very queer, his closest friend and the whole gym seem to be all part of that as well. This only might change now with him questioning his work and breaking up with Alan: some gatherings he won’t attend anymore apparently.

And finally, we have Li Ming. At school he doesn’t seem to open up to his classmates on most things and additionally is in the closet. While there wasn’t anything alluding to homophobic rethoric being spread at school we can see how the heteronormativity gets to him and feel that there must be good reason as to why no one knows. And it could just be how Li Ming is judging the situation based on vibes, we don’t know. His mother is or at least was homophobic but at the same time he is raised by his gay uncle who is surrounded by other gay people. And I love how it feels like this might have given him enough security to be comfortable with his own sexuality but how it also isn’t enough to shield him from the world at large.

With so many great shows coming out of Thailand and most of them getting more and more political it just feels so real and 2023 to me that Li Ming is part of a generation that knows who they are but still have to battle with the shadow that homophobia has cast way before they were born.

#moonlight chicken #i had this in my draft for a week now thinking if i'd get the time i could put this more leloquently but that was a lie as it turns out #might edit some stuff later #but for now i just have to write about how fantastic this show is for giving these varied realities of queer life #which are all influenced by their environment but also in the way the characters connect across generations #we don't know if him had a gay mentor who could've guided him #whereas li ming technically has him and his neighbourhood friends to reference #but li ming - understandibly so - seems more closeted than anyone else (minus Heart possigly) #in middle school everyone around me proclaimed how supportive they were of lgbt+ rights #but as soon as one guy came out he become the TALK of the school for weeks #he got reduced to his sexuality #and when he dated a girls some months after he got called attention seeking for coming out as gay before #and most people thought they were doing an open-minded thing #and despite knowing that i know that i am not the only queer kid who decided to not come out lest we'd become that talk of the whole school #and our dating lives scrutinized #even though all of us were super comfortable with who we are #and for me that was mostly the case because i had adult lesbian role models close to my family #so i knew i was good and that nothing strange was going on #but still - this othering made the school environment hostile enough to keep me in the closet #so yes - i am extremely delighted with how they depict this dynamic with li ming
