I feel like challenging GOD so in my first ever read of Harry Potter I will be listing all of my headcanons in one big master post and sending it into the void space of tumblr thank you goodbye. I have no concept over which of these are hottakes, which of these are widely accepted, and which of them are just me being batshit crazy because as I write this I have never once looked at the Harry Potter fandom proper and my only knowledge of it is My Immortal and the fact that TikTok thinks Harry's dad and Sirius' little brother should makeout. 1. Ron Weasley is autistic.

oh my deer, i truly do not believe you want to know all of the insanity of branches, wires, paint, and ideas that are all jumbled up in my brain

but i will provide you with some of my favorite headcannons, though tbh a lot of them are just me kinning too close to the sun via breaking up aspects of myself like pieces of stained glass and pushing/stabbing these pieces into characters

genderfluid sirius is my baby, she helped me to come into my own, he's my pride and joy, zey are everything to me. that sense of wanting to be everything and nothing, ever-changing in how they present themself, and that zeir friends accept it

plus size lily is up there too, i've been looking more into this headcannon lately and i just love it. especially because i've seen the idea thrown around that lily firstly had been rejecting james because she thought he was joking and could never actually like her because of her weight and it's tragic and i love it. that may or may not be because someone did the same thing to me years ago

aromantic james potter is one of the few were i'm not taking a piece of myself, i just find it interesting for him (however, i know i'm weird in thinking this since 2 of the most popular ships in this fandom include james). but just the idea that james loves his friends so much and he has such an admiration for lily that it has to be romantic, right? and i mean it's what everyone expects, they're destined to be together. it's what his friends and his parents expect. it's clearly the path he's meant to go on. but he just doesn't feel that way. still he pretends and conforms because what else is there for him to do? so him and lily are stuck in a marriage that doesn't really work because neither of them feel that way for each other (lily's a lesbian and in love with mary), but both of them get along, both of them love harry.

DADDY ISSUES REMUS, i've been ever so subtly throwing this idea out time and again this past week for absolutely no reason at all. but it's like, remus spends a lot of his time trying to control his temper, he tames himself and masks almost constantly because if he fucks up and gets himself into trouble it's going to be terrible for him because of him being a wolf. and so he feels he can't be angry, ever, yet in that he's constantly enraged. at who? everyone, no one, his dad, himself. he feels so much anger towards his dad and there is a shred of guilt in lyall, yes, but still their relationship is like walking on eggshells constantly because they don't know how to talk to each other. they both sort of resent each other. they're both constantly angry. they both see the world in such opposite views, to the point where remus doesn't express his thoughts or feelings or himself as a whole in front of his dad. and i can go on but it's probably getting to be a bit too much in the sad zone by this point

sirius is a really good artist and will sketch their friends in class when he's not paying attention (she's also sketched minnie a few times which his professor is honored by, but she wishes they would focus on the lecture at hand)

remus, lily, and reg have a book club and are about to read lotr

peter is good at baking

mary keeps a journal and is incredibly protective over it, but lily has sneaked a look in it before whenever mary wasn't around

peter question, do you have any headcanons about his friendships with the other marauders and girls + reggie. Like who hes closest to, what they like to do together etc.

id say he's closest to the other marauders + mary. obviously like, the marauders are the marauders. annoying little inseparable friend group. but separately, i feel like james is sort of who peter goes to for advice/personal feelings and stuff and james does the same, to a degree, with him. they'd also like,, do art-y stuff, like peter loves painting and james needs something to occupy his hands and mind so theyll paint together outside or something. with sirius their friendship is mostly pranks and jokes and stuff since both of their limits in pranks are a lot higher than remus and james, like sirius and peter have looser morals and dont think of consequences as much. remus and peter's friendship is more calmer ig. both introverts and after hanging out with the others theyd like hang in silence to energise a bit, reading, doing some work, playing chess, etc.

with mary. i headcanon mary as aroace and peter as aromantic, so they hang out a lot when others are off on dates, usually during hogsmeade weekends and stuff. they'd probably like, gossip and stuff together, confide in each other about their doubts in the order. james may be who peter talks to about his family issues, or self worth and stuff. but mary was who he talked to about more selfish thoughts, not wanting to risk his life, because mary felt the same.

he's also fairly close to lily, marlene, and emmeline. with emmeline, they mostly hang out with mary as well, going shopping, gossiping, very casual hanging out. did date for a bit tho, before both realising they didn't particularly like each other romantically. with marlene, their friendship is mostly mutual dyed-blonde respect and music. both forming a band together during school- marlene the bassist and peter the lead singer and guitarist. with lily, they're less close than with the others but still hang out quite a bit, just usually also with others. peter's fairly good at potions so i feel like after lily stopped being friends with snape, they'd be potion partners.

with the others, i dont really think he was that close to them. maybe a little with pandora and sybill with emmeline dating them. in my fic where regulus gets given the horcrux later, so he's still alive with peter being a death eater, they become good friends, bonding over their mutual betrayals of literally everyone and everyone wanting to kill them both. but i dont really think they would have been friends in school. he probably hung out with the slytherins a couple times, with marlene dating dorcas and jegulily/jegulus or whatever. but never hanging out without everyone else as well.

OK, so apparently my current obsession is with a Regulus lives AU where he disappears and becomes a monk. For bullet point thoughts, click Keep Reading.

Lying in the cave, half dead, Regulus reflected on his life and regrets. The murder and torture never sat well with his faith, but now, with the emerald potion still coursing through his memories, he feels twisted and destroyed. He needs redemption.

Regulus disappears, assumed dead. Toying with the idea that the Dark Mark deactivated either because Regulus came so close to death, or when he takes his vows. Even if deactivated, it’s still visible, just can’t be summoned/tracked. 

Regulus goes to Italy or Greece to find a remote, mountain monastery. I am torn because Catholic Regulus is vibes, and if in Italy, I like the idea of Regulus learning Italian from scratch. But Greek heritage Regulus is also a soft spot because family names (i.e. Orion, Sirius...) drawing on Greek mythology and also how it could tie with the late Prince Philip, who was from Greece originally.

Regulus loves singing and gardening, he takes over growing herbs for cooking and herbal remedies. He also secretly uses magic to help out, particularly for illnesses. A few of the higher ups figure out that he’s a magic user (some awareness within the Church of magic, like the way the muggle prime minister is made aware of the magic world). Regulus learns to appreciate that they don’t fear or judge him for his magic. 

Other things Regulus discovers is part of his draw to the Death Eaters was a needed for a rigid routine and clear chain of authority. He much prefers the monastery to the Death Eaters.

For asexual, aromantic Regulus, joining the monastery resolves his inner conflict about continuing the family line. He never quiet managed to come to terms with his own sexuality and felt that it was a stupid reason to end a noble bloodline. Becoming a monk and taking a vow of chastity seems much more suitable cause.

Voldemort still returns.

Dumbledore actually figured out that Regulus disappeared and became a monk but didn’t follow up because you know what, good for the little Death Eater and if he did follow it up, chances are that would lead to Regulus’ death because suddenly there’s a trail. Best leave him be. But then with the rise of Voldemort, any help is good.

Sirius is mopping about being stuck in Grimmauld Place and how boring it is. He may be a wanted criminal but all the effort to find Sirius is UK based and no one is looking in Italy/Greece. With a twinkle of mischief in his eyes, Dumbledore sends Sirius to find Brother [whatever pseudonym Regulus is using] because this monk might be able to help. 

Shock on both sides. Regulus was not expecting to be found. Sirius was not expecting an alive Regulus. 

Regulus realises that Kreacher did not destroy the horcrux and gets permission from the monastery to take a temporary leave of absence.

Sirius teases Regulus way too much about him becoming a monk.

Regulus continues to wear his monk robes throughout. 

None of the Death Eaters were expecting Regulus alive, or a monk. Or trying to save their souls but surprisingly still very adept with combat magic when they want to continue with the whole murder thing.

Queer Readings of Les Mis - Javert

Queer readings of classic literature are one of my favourite things and I’ve seen some great queer readings of Enjolras and Grantaire, and a few queer readings of Eponine and Valjean too but one queer reading that I don’t see much is of Javert, so I thought I’d do a queer reading of Javert with you guys today! This includes ace Javert, repressed gay Javert, and my ‘Javert realises he’s in love with Valjean before he dies but Valjean never realises or reciprocates his feelings’ reading so yeah be prepared for that! :’D

I feel like I should probably define what a queer reading actually is before I start because it’s a term used a lot in academia that some people might not have come across before! Queer readings are about challenging heteronormativity in texts and exploring ways in which a text can be interpreted as queer. While some queer readings of texts can focus on what the author’s potential intentions may have been, this isn’t a necessity. If you’re a younger queer person I just want to let you know that you’re allowed to want to see yourself in history and in literature, you have a right to assert your existence and you shouldn’t let anyone make you feel bad or silly for that uwu <3

Our first question is ‘is there any evidence in the brick that Javert is cishet?’ And the answer to that is there’s honestly no evidence at all to suggest that Javert is heterosexual.

In the brick we’re told that Javert isn’t really interested in anything outside of his work, including sexual and romantic relationships. The text actually suggests he’s never been in a relationship before and doesn’t desire one either - ‘And, withal, a life of privation, isolation, abnegation, chastity, with never a diversion.’  ‘As we have said, he had no vices. When he was pleased with himself, he permitted himself a pinch of snuff. Therein lay his connection with humanity.’ (1.5.5) In summary, Javert doesn’t fuck uwu Javert doesn’t have any friends either which is kinda sad someone form a human connection with this man :’3

With this evidence, one queer reading of Javert in the brick is that he’s aromantic and asexual, or somewhere on the aroace spectrum. Javert seems to have a total lack of interest in any kind of intimate relationship, and it’s entirely possible that he doesn’t experience attraction towards anyone.

Another queer reading we can take from Javert’s disinterest in relationships is that he’s attracted to men and represses all of his romantic and/or sexual feelings. Javert is really good at not thinking too hard about stuff, especially anything complicated like his own sexuality - thought was something to which he was unused, and which was peculiarly painful. (5.4.1) It’s the coping mechanism he uses to be able to maintain his black and white worldview, and it would make sense that that would extend into other areas of his personal life too.

Javert was raised in a very heteronormative society and is very respectful of authority and social norms. He’s religious just because that’s what’s socially expected of him, not because he’s thought particularly hard about his relationship with God. In his eyes, of course, the ecclesiastical authority was the chief of all; he was religious, superficial and correct on this point as on all others. (1.8.5) He knows he’s not interested in relationships with women, but he might not have even considered that being attracted to men was an alternative. Sure maybe he’s thought men were handsome before, but he literally doesn’t have the ability to reflect on what those feelings might mean for him and his sexuality. If you asked brick Javert what his sexuality was he’d probably say he was heterosexual, despite never actually experiencing sexual attraction towards women, because that’s the social default and he’s never bothered to question whether or not he might fit that default.

Alternatively, he might be aware that he is attracted to men, but that’s not a socially acceptable thing for him to feel so he just represses it along with all the other thoughts and feelings he has that question authority and the workings of society.

Revolutionary France decriminalized homosexuality in 1791, so this would be less of a legal issue for Javert than a social issue, since I’m assuming there was still a lot of social stigma surrounding being queer. I’m a queer historian but my period is medieval Europe not revolutionary France so if anyone has anything to add here please do ^^’

This wouldn’t be a Sirius Brand Meta Post if I didn’t talk about animal symbolism lol, so I’m gonna talk about animal symbolism now! Specifically the homoeroticism of the hunting symbolism and how surprising horny (voreny?) and repressed Javert is :’3

Javert’s animal symbolism can actually be used as part of a queer reading as a way to understand how he emotionally reacts to things. Javert is at his most emotional in chapter 5.4.1, Javert derailed. He’s is forced to confront everything he’s denied and repressed about himself and other people, and a large portion of this chapter is dedicated to how he feels about Valjean specifically. Do I think Javert has been in love with Valjean this entire time and is finally forced to confront his feelings? No. Up until this point I think they’ve both seen each other as an inconvenience and an obstacle who they somehow keep running into, and I don’t think this changes for Valjean after he saves Javert. He just doesn’t know Javert well enough outside of ‘that one weird policeman I keep running into’ to have any strong feelings about him.

I will argue though that in Javert derailed, Javert is in love with Valjean. I’m not even sure if he’s consciously aware that that’s what he’s feeling and I don’t think he really knows how to express it either. Hugo chooses to express a lot of Javert’s more complex feelings through animalistic metaphors, because Javert feels things in a very instinctive and animalistic way, that’s just how his understanding of himself and his emotions works ^^’

Javert is clearly having very conflicted feelings about what his relationship with Valjean is after he spared his life at the barricade. There’s still that hunting instinct that tells him he’s found the convict he was tracking down, but there’s something else there too. ‘The dog who finds his master again’. I don’t know how many of you have dogs but they’re always so happy to see their humans again whenever you go somewhere! Javert is happy to see him! Javert missed him! Maybe he even feels some affection towards him! Even the wolf finding his prey is excited to see it again, and in both of these scenarios the dog and the wolf desire closeness with the object of their attention. The homoeroticism of the hunt!! The love and devotion of the dog!! Symbolically, Javert is breaking his ties with the police and forming a bond with Valjean. Emotionally he’s confused and conflicted but he knows that he wants to be close to Valjean.

In the end, ‘the dog who finds his master’ wins out over the ‘wolf which regains his grip on his prey’. Javert lets Valjean go, and then we get this:

A terrible situation! to be touched. ... to be the watch-dog, and to lick the intruder’s hand! to be ice and melt! to be the pincers and to turn into a hand! to suddenly feel one’s fingers opening! to relax one’s grip,—what a terrible thing! (5.4.1)

God the tenderness!!!! How could this not be love in Javert’s weird canid way!! The affection of the dog who licks the human’s hand, the devotion of the dog finding his master!! Javert’s utter devotion towards the society he served is now being projected onto Valjean. Javert loves Valjean. Javert is in awe of Valjean, he’s terrified of him in the same way that men are terrified of angels!

A benevolent malefactor, merciful, gentle, helpful, clement, a convict, returning good for evil, giving back pardon for hatred, preferring pity to vengeance, preferring to ruin himself rather than to ruin his enemy, saving him who had smitten him, kneeling on the heights of virtue, more nearly akin to an angel than to a man. (5.4.1)

What could this be but love from Javert? The man who spent his whole life devoted to system that placed no value on his life and ended it devoted to the man who saved it.

All of that aside, queer readings don’t have to match up with personal headcanons! I don’t want this post to feel like I’m telling you you have to interpret Javert’s character in the book the way I do, this is just one way of reading it! I love to headcanon Javert as bi but that isn’t really supported anywhere in the text lol uwu’’ A queer reading is just about queer elements that are present in the text and there is no way Inspector Javert can be read as heterosexual <3

McGonagall is bisexual and helped rally during one of the first pride marches in England back in the 70s

Once Hagrid learns about the LGBTQ+ community from Harry and Co. he asks them if they could get him some flags to hang around his hut so that every student knows it’s a safe place for all.

Hogwarts eventually starts allowing students to stay over the summer months if they have nowhere else to go or if their own home isn’t safe for them.

Harry knew he was bi since he was like 10 but he just didn’t have a word for it until he met Hermione (cuz she was smart and knew a lot of words)

Of course he never told the Dursleys this but one day (he was 14 at the time) he found Dudley crying in his room when he thought no one was home and Harry just had this strange feeling that he should talk to him.

So turns out that Dudley was bi too and he was not processing it as well as Harry did. Harry came out to him which somehow comforted Dudley a lot more than he thought it would; they talked all night long and it was the beginning of them mending their familial relationship with each other into something healthy.

Heromione told Ron and Harry that she was trans during their second year and she was so scared that they would reject her that she cried for a whole hour before being able to say anything properly. Ron and Harry comforted her the entire time and promised her that they would all remain friends no matter what.

After that if anybody even LOOKED at Hermione in any sort of offensive way Ron and Harry would go absolutely feral on their asses

It took a LONG while for Ron to figure out he was Asexual, like he knew that he liked girls he just didn’t wanna…go all the way with them.

He had thought there was something wrong with him because all the guys were always talking about their “experiences” with their partners and how good it was

At first he thought that maybe it was because he unknowingly liked guys but after a few curious make-out sessions with a couple of male class mates at parties he concluded that wasn’t the case. It wasn’t a terrible experience but it just wasn’t his cup of tea.

Eventually he caved and finally talked to Hermione and Harry who were both very patient and gave plenty of helpful advice. So in the end Ron found out that he wasn’t weird he was just asexual.

When Harry and Draco finally start dating every time they see Lucius in their range of sight they start acting obnoxiously couple-y just to piss him off.

Narcissa thinks it’s funny

Dolores Umbridge is a homophobe and everybody hated her even more (including Draco’s gang). This was the moment all four houses came together in perfect harmony and collectively fucked her over.

When Harry was sent to Umbridge’s office for detention and told to write “I must not tell lies” with a black quill he instead looked her straight in the eye and wrote down “raging bisexual” in all caps.

When Draco found this out he fell just a little bit more in love with Harry

During their DADA class as Umbridge was discussing Merlin, Draco made a disagreeable comment which led to a squabble between them. It ended with Draco rolling his eyes and scoffing: “If you honestly think Merlin was even remotely heterosexual then you’re even stupider than I previously though, you mythic bitch!”

The entire class was stun into awed silence and Harry would not stop making obvious heart eyes at Draco for entire week.

After double teaming on a particularly nasty prank on Umbridge, which involved replacing all her cat portraits with worted toads, configuring all her sweets into slugs, hiding spiders and harmless snakes in her desk draws, and changing anything pink in her office to a gross bog water color, Harry and Draco finally got together. They were caught by Umbridge making-out under the stairwell and sent to detention.

She tried to get them expelled for their prank but she didn’t have enough evidence against them to prove that they did it.

Regulus Black knows he doesn’t like girls. He wishes he did. It would make everything so much easier. But at some point, you have to accept that maybe you aren’t just a late bloomer. Maybe it isn’t just that you “haven’t found the right girl yet”. Maybe it’s just who you are.

Aside from knowing he definitely doesn’t like girls, though, it’s all very confusing. It seemed like a logical conclusion that if he doesn’t like girls, he must like boys.

But then, James Potter kissed him, and he’s pretty sure that if he were gay, it would’ve felt… special. Or it would’ve felt like anything at all. But rather, it felt exactly the same as kissing girls: uncomfortably and wetly smashing your mouths together. He didn’t say any of this to James. He didn’t say anything, actually, just left with what he knows was a terribly transparent excuse. Now, he’s in his room, sitting on the floor and staring out of the window at the few stars visible through the clouds.  

Is there something wrong with him? The question has been echoing in his mind since the kiss. Well, really, it’s been there long before, but he has managed to ignore it well enough before today. It was easy to push it to the back of his mind, and tell himself that he would figure it out eventually and it didn’t really matter.

But… He kissed James. James Potter, the guy who half the girls - and several guys - are utterly enamoured by. James Potter, who is objectively very handsome. And surely, if he were gay, kissing him would’ve felt… good? How is kissing supposed to feel? Regulus has tried it a few times by now, and it has never been the enjoyable experience that people make it out to be.

He is typing the words into google before he even registers having taken his phone out. Is kissing supposed to feel good?

Most of the search results are clinical, detached articles, explaining the biological and social reasons as to why humans like kissing. Until he stumbles upon a blog post on one of those ask-and-answer forums.

Anonymous: need advice!! my friends are constantly going on about their crushes and the people they’ve been with, how much they love kissing, all that stuff. and i just can’t relate at all. i’ve kissed a few boys, and once a girl too, and i don’t understand the hype at all? i’ve never really had a crush on anyone either, i think. all that kissing and dating and sex stuff just seem like a waste of time to me. is there something wrong with me? am i broken or something?

Regulus’s heart stutters as he reads the post through. He… relates to most of it. Is there something wrong with me? It’s the same question that’s been ringing loud and clear through his head since the kiss.

The comments are mostly stuff like “just wait til you’re older” and “you’ll get it when you meet the right person”, and Reg feels his stomach sink. Is that really it? He’s supposed to sit around and wait for “the right person” to come into his life and… fix him? He thinks about James again. James, who is kind and funny and one of his favourite people in the entire world. But kissing him didn’t feel right. It hasn’t felt right with anyone.

But then his eyes catch on another comment on the person’s post: you should look into the terms asexual and aromantic. i don’t think there’s anything wrong with you or that you are broken, but if you don’t have an interest in romance/sex it could be because you’re ace and/or aro.

Asexual and aromantic. Regulus googles both terms, spends hours reading through articles and blog posts and people sharing their experiences, and for the first time in his life he feels… seen. He hadn’t realized how lonely he felt, before discovering that he isn’t alone.

It’s a lot to take in. A lot of thoughts and questions and answers swirling in Regulus’s head. He really, really wants to talk to someone about all of this. But first of all, it’s 3 AM. Secondly, who?

James is… kinda the whole reason he’s having this sexuality crisis to begin with. He is certain he would’ve figured it out anyway at some point, but it’s thanks to James that he is up in the middle of the night, buried in research about his own identity. He doesn’t think he can talk to James about all this. At least not yet.

Then there’s Sirius. Regulus doesn’t know if he would understand. He feels some of that familiar loneliness creep up on him again. He and Sirius are finally close again. After years of division and hurt and pretending the other doesn’t exist, they have a relationship that’s actually good, and Regulus doesn’t want to ruin it. What if Sirius doesn’t understand or doesn’t accept him? He can’t lose his brother again. He doesn’t have anyone else.

Should he just… not tell anyone, then? Perhaps that is best, at least for now, he thinks. If no one knows, no one can judge him for it or tell him that it’s wrong or that his experiences aren’t real. He nods to himself, settling back into bed. It’s better if no one knows.

Regulus doesn’t get any sleep that night. Not that he really expected to. He spends the next day dozing off in class and avoiding James. Both are working out great for him until he starts awake, feeling a gentle hand on his shoulder.

He sits up straight on his chair and squints as he looks around. The classroom is empty, except for him and-

“Sorry, did I wake you?” James asks. He's standing beside Regulus’s desk, looking down at him with something like concern.

“S’fine,” Regulus mumbles, stifling a yawn.

James sits on top of the desk next to Regulus’s. “You look tired,” he says. “Are you okay?”

Regulus still doesn’t know how to react to people showing him genuine concern. It’s not something he’s really used to. “I’m fine,” he says, perhaps a bit too forcefully. He stands up, almost knocking over his chair in the process, and starts quickly packing up his things.

“Hey, uh,” James says, nervously messing up his hair in that way he does. “There’s something we should probably talk about.”

The kiss. Reg was desperately hoping James would pretend it never happened. He slings his bag over one shoulder and starts towards the door. “I’m sorta in a rush.”

James stands up. “Reg, please,” he says. “I… I really need to talk to you about it. Please.”

Regulus sighs, but stops in the doorway. “We don’t have to,” he says in an almost pleading tone, turning around to face James. “It doesn’t matter.”

“You don’t understand.” James looks at him with big doe eyes. “Reg, it matters to me.”

He regards James for a while, before nodding, signalling for him to say whatever it is he wants to say.

James takes a deep breath. “So, er… The thing about the kiss,” he begins, fidgeting nervously with the strap of his bag. “It sorta… made me realize something? About myself?”

Regulus has never seen him this nervous. He waits in silence for him to go on.

“Shit,” James mumbles, rubbing his face with his hands. “I feel like I’ve rehearsed this conversation all day, but now I just, like… Have no idea what to say.” He takes another deep breath. “Screw it, I’m just gonna say it, okay? I really fucking liked that kiss and I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it and also I’m bisexual.” It comes out as a quick string of words with no pause for James to breathe - or for Reg to interrupt him.

James looks at him; nervous, expectant, awaiting. But Regulus really doesn’t know what to say. He feels a tight knot in his stomach. “Oh,” he finally manages.

“Ah, shit,” James says frantically. “That’s right, there was something else I was gonna say, something important. I, er… I completely get it if you don’t feel the same way. I don’t want this to ruin our friendship, because I really care about you and I don’t wanna lose you. I just… really needed to get this off my chest.”

He sounds so genuine. Of course he does, Reg thinks and feels stupid. When has James ever been anything but genuine, honest and loyal? When has he ever judged Reg or turned his back on him for anything? James knows him better than he allows most people to, and if there’s anyone Reg can talk to about this, it’s him.

“There’s something I need to get off my chest too,” Regulus says quietly.

James’s eyes widen. “Oh? What is it?”

Reg sets down his bag and goes to sit by the desk opposite James. He doesn’t look at him as he starts talking. “I’m aroace. I don’t experience… that kind of attraction. Romantic or sexual. It’s… not exactly that the kiss made me realize it. Or maybe it did. But I kinda already knew. I just… wasn’t ready to admit it to myself, I suppose? Also I didn’t really know the word for it. But… yeah, that’s who I am and I can’t do anything to change that, just as you can’t change the fact that you’re bi, so… I hope you won’t hate me now.”

When James stays quiet, Regulus forces himself to look up. James is looking at him with an unreadable expression, and Reg’s stomach drops. This was a terrible idea. He should’ve known he couldn’t tell anyone. He has ruined everything. James opens his mouth but before he can say anything, Reg has pushed out his chair and is walking toward the door with swift steps.

“Nevermind,” he says, ignoring the stinging of tears in his eyes.

“Reg, wait!”

“Forget everything I just said.”

James finds him rather quickly, at the area behind the school that’s nearly hidden with shrubs. It’s where he comes when he needs to be alone, and he knows it’s also where Sirius comes to smoke.

Regulus is sitting on the ground with his back against a tree trunk, not caring if his clothes get dirty. James sits down about a meter away from him, but doesn’t speak, so Regulus is the one to break the silence:

“Are you upset because of my sexuality or because I don’t have feelings for you?” he asks. His voice is harsher than he meant it to be, but at least it’s not shaking.

James draws in a sharp breath, turning to face him. “I’m not upset at all!” he exclaims. “What on earth gave you that idea?”

He’s… not upset? Regulus clears his throat. “Well,” he mumbles. “You didn’t say anything.”

“I’m sorry,” James says earnestly. “I didn’t really know what to say. And you didn’t exactly give me a lot of time to think before you stormed off.”

Now Reg feels like he’s the one who should apologize. He doesn’t, though. Just stares straight ahead at the shrubs surrounding them.

“I’m really sorry I made you feel this way, Reg,” James says softly. “I promise I’m not upset. I care about you. A lot. And I, er… I may not know that much about this stuff, but I’m gonna do research on it so I can support you the best I can, because I care about-” He cuts himself off. “No, wait, I already said that part,” he mumbles, laughing nervously.

Reg smiles at him. “You hate doing research,” he says. “You avoid it like the plague.”

James laughs again. “Shut up, you wanker,” he says, shoving him gently. “This is different!”

He scoots a bit closer, putting his hand on Regulus’s shoulder. “But really,” he says, his tone more serious now. “I support you one hundred percent. You’ll always be family to me. So if you want, we can just forget all about that kiss.”

“But…” Reg looks up at him. “The kiss did mean something to you, didn’t it?”

James considers this for a moment. “I mean… it was a good kiss. And it did sorta… force me to come to terms with my sexuality. But what really means something to me is you, Reg, and our friendship. I don’t wanna lose that, ever. So… do I maybe have a teeny tiny crush on you? Yeah, I think I might, but it’s honestly no big deal. It won’t change anything between us, I promise.”

He holds out his pinky finger, and it takes Regulus several moments to realize what he’s doing. He holds up his own pinky and laces it with James’s.

“I just realized, I’m kind of an asshole,” he says after a bit. “I practically dismissed your coming out because I was so worried about my own.”

“Oh.” James chuckles. “Mate, don’t worry about it. I completely understand.”

“If you want, you can tell me again and I will try to react better,” Reg offers.

James shakes his head, amused. “I… alright,” he says, grinning. “Regulus?”

“Yes?”

“I’m bisexual.”

Reg smiles at him. “Oh, okay!” he says, acting as though it’s the first he’s hearing of this. “That’s lovely. I’m very happy for you. And… obviously, I support you, and I care about you a lot, too.”

James’s grin grows wider. “Thank you,” he says.

They sit quietly for a while, before James speaks again:

“Do you wanna come over today? Mum is making pancakes for dessert. And we can play Mario Kart.”

Regulus groans, but can’t quite suppress a smile. “Ugh, I don’t wanna play Mario Kart against you. You always win. I swear you’re cheating, somehow.”

“How would I cheat at Mario Kart?” James asks with a laugh.

Reg shrugs, crossing his arms. “I don’t know, but I don’t wanna play with you either way.”

“Okay, well… You can play against Sirius? Or you two can team up and try to beat me together,” James suggests, nudging his shoulder. “Come on, it’ll be fun. And pancakes.”

“Fine,” Reg says, as if he wasn’t going to say yes from the beginning. “But only because of the pancakes.”

James nods solemnly. “That’s fair,” he says, and Reg tries not to smile like an idiot, but it’s hard not to because at least for now, all of the worries and doubts swirling in his chest have been driven away by a warm, relieved feeling.

“James?” he says.

“Yeah?”

He doesn’t actually know what to say, so he just wraps his arms around James and pulls him into a hug. James hugs him back tightly, and Regulus feels incredibly lucky to have a friend like him.

Hey!

Instead of calling us Snape apologists, why don’t we start calling y’all Marauder apologists?

After all, you seem to be apologizing for James and Sirius’s shitty behavior. However, we aren’t apologizing for Severus’s shitty behavior. Unlike the Marauder apologists, we embrace Sev’s darkness. We explore it and debate about it. All you Marauder apologists do is make fluffy headcanons about James being the most progressive dude on the planet and Remus and Sirius being super gay when the former was probably straight (though I don’t mind a Remus who’s bi). Now, not to say I’m hating on y’all (some of your headcanons aren’t too bad) but I’m just saying: Aren’t you guys apologizing for your faves? You don’t see us erasing Sev’s bad behavior, but we see y’all erasing James and Sirius’s bad behavior all the time.

          in this post i will be laying out all information regarding sirius’ romantic orientation, experience with and general stance towards romance. i will also take position in regards to popular ship dynamics and general pointers on shipping with this muse.

          too long; don’t wanna read: sirius is aromantic, wolfstar ehhh perhaps BUT!, and i don’t really plan on romantically shipping him with anyone. sorry!

          romantic orientation           sirius is grey aromantic, but on the furthest side of the spectrum. in his canon time-line, he wouldn’t and doesn’t fall in love. for him to do so, it’d require an incredibly close bond, and if there’s ever a person who reaches that the level of closeness and trust it needs to be up there with the bond he has with james. it doesn’t have to be as soulmate-y, james and sirius really are on the exact same wavelength, but just as open and codependent, sort of. the problem is: in his main verse, sirius would never ever have let anyone as close to him as james, because of the circumstances and because he doesn’t want to. that’s why james would be the only person he could theoretically develop feelings for. which he doesn’t because that is his brother.           experience           the only experience sirius has with romance is therefore from seeing it between others. he didn’t exactly grow up in a loving household, but that is not to claim that orion and walburga didn’t love each other. sirius just didn’t see it, and especially when he got to an age where falling in love is something more people think about, he was already getting estranged from his parents and, partially out of spite, thought of them to be unable to feel love in the first place. but sirius doesn’t get it, at least not in the way his friends talk about it. this is not just because of his orientation, but sirius, in general, is oftentimes very oblivious to other people’s feelings. he’s not very empathic, and if he cannot relate other people’s feelings to his own… well… then he just doesn’t understand at all. and sometimes that also means that he doesn’t accept them.           what really makes him understand is seeing james and lily fall in love, and even that, for him, is a process. of course there probably instances around him of people feeling romantic, but it either — given the age — wasn’t too serious or fully-fledged, or it wasn’t too close to him for him to actually witness it. because sirius didn’t really care for it, at all, and he made sure to proclaim so several times, even when he didn’t know what he was talking about.

          watching the person he was closest to fall in love, though, changed that. at first, he was highly skeptical. well, at the very first, he thought it was a joke, that the way they acted was somehow planned because he didn’t get how that just happened to someone. but when it became clear that they weren’t just acting like that because, stereotypically, people “ in love ” acted a certain way, he realized, and he didn’t like it. when james and lily started a relationship, he wasn’t entirely on board, because while lily is cool in theory and he does wish his mate all the best, it feels like james is trying to replace him. for sirius, what he feels for james is really as far as it goes when it comes to caring for someone, and he thought that that’s mutual. he doesn’t get how there’s suddenly “ more ” for lily. it takes him a while to come to terms with the fact that this is something different entirely, that james is still his family and, by extension, so is lily. it also shows him what romantic love looks like, and that it’s nothing he’s felt before or can imagine himself feeling.           stance towards romance           depending on when you ask sirius, his answers will of course differ, but for the longest time, he thought it was a hoax. not as in — nobody ever felt romantic love, he certainly knew it existed and thought it would even befall him someday, but the way it was portrayed by books and songs and all that? it sounded like it was too exaggerated for actual, real-life people to behave like that. this certainly is not due to his own orientation, but because in his immediate environment, love between a husband and a wife was not put on display and certainly not treated as a prerequisite for marriage. the whole idea of romanticism was treated like a dime novel concept, nothing practical or applicable.

          sirius believes in love. he has seen and felt it, familial love, platonic love, close kinship with people he hasn’t even known for that long. but he has no reference, no connection to romantic love. he’s never experienced it, he’s never really wanted to experience it. but above all, he is not very empathetic at all. if he has no reference, he doesn’t understand it in others, and therefore he doesn’t take it seriously. this can and has lead to him offending and hurting his friends when he invalidates their feelings, especially in his phase of antagonizing lily when she and james clearly expressed romantic interest in each other. it’s something he has learned from and afterward isn‘t proud of, and thanks to them he learns to understand about true romantic love, but it’s something takes most of his normal life to process. later, he has more time to reflect, but it’s not a good time.

          on wolfstar           i want to note that i do not ship wolfstar, at least not off the bat. this has to do with the interpretation of fanon, in which sirius and remus fall in love at 15 and are inseparable ever since, they share chocolate and fight about who’s the bottom. as you may know, i hate fanon with a burning passion, and above all, i hate how one of the central points of sirius’ characterization has become his being in love with remus. secondly, my personal interpretation and prioritization of canon information is rather different from wolfstar interpretations, even the non-fanon ones i have seen. in his canon timeline, sirius and remus begin harbouring deep distrust towards each other, causing them to suspect each other to be the traitor. i also do not believe that the “ prank ” sirius played on snape, in which he purposefully led snape to find remus on a full moon, who might’ve killed him if it wasn’t for james’ intervention, is something they could just move past so easily. even if remus does forgive sirius, for sirius it’s still something that’ll stand between them. i do not believe that this is an atmosphere in which romantic feelings could arise for anyone, let alone someone like sirius.

          that being said, just because i don’t support widespread ideas regarding sirius x remus, or do not ship them in a canon timeline, this doesn’t mean that i am completely opposed to the idea! i just personally believe that the circumstances have to be very, very different for them to be able to trust each other, and deeply enough for it to end in something romantic. i do not have a specific idea of how that should go, but i am always willing to explore a plot!

          on other dynamics           there are a few other popular ship dynamics in fanon that i don’t quite understand, specifically when they involve characters such as marlene, dorcas, or mary, who have been mentioned within perhaps two lines. obviously, i do not believe in lumping together all these different interpretations of one character, and i will not assume chemistry off the bat. in fact, i usually actually assume the opposite, because most of these characters are self-respecting women and sirius behaves, most of the time, like a full-on asshole — but that’s besides the point. as stated before, i really do not see a way in his canon timeline for him to get close enough to someone other than the marauders. and sirius doesn’t do crushes. that is not just because it takes a lot for him to develop romantic attraction, he’s also just an all or nothing kinda guy. therefore, the only thing that really applies to this type of dynamics is chemistry and lots and lots of plotting and development.

          on james/sirius           in my previous analysis, i might’ve suggested that james would be the one person sirius would fall in love with, but that… really isn’t it, either. quite frankly, things would have to go horribly wrong for them to end up together, or it might even be impossible, because james' trust and friendship are what shape sirius as a person and them being family is essential to his development. and no, despite being purebloods, you just don’t date family.

Gen and Aro Prompts

(I am sorry this is so late, this is exam week for me and I am exceptionally tired.)

So, about a year ago (more or less), I started a prompt meme on AO3, called "Gen and Aro Prompts", to encourage people to write more gen stories, and/or stories involving aro-spec characters.

It's still open, anyone can still contribute, and if you want to write something, that would be really, really awesome. (Especially for those people who want someone to help write out their aro headcanons, but no one who knows the fandom has stumbled over it yet.)

If you want to submit a prompt, and maybe hope someone interested stumbles over it, please do!

So far, there's 31 prompts, and 26 works.

Not all of those works include explicitely aro characters, but 23 out of 26 (if I counted correctly) means that fics featuring aro characters are by far in the majority.

There's fics exploring aromanticism in worlds with soulmates, fics exploring certain characters as aromantic, people-coming-out-fics…

Some of my favourites (because there's too many of them, I can't list them all):

Of Arrows and Soulmates - the oldest fic in the collection, predating the prompt meme, featuring the Hawkeyes as platonic soulmates. Kind of light-hearted and nice and you can feel the relief when both realize they're platonic soulmates?

Immortality - I adore how comfy Pidge gets to be with being aro… , and also that this was written in response to one of my prompts; features a Pidge without a soulmate where people start ageing when they meet theirs.

Flingerlings - featuring aro Luna and Harry, and one of my favourite rejections of amatonormativity. Also starring Snape's corpse, and the rejection of amatonormativity includes Snape's actions, and just - go read it.

Pangur Bán and Me - Hermione and Millicent Bulstrode both get to be aro immortal friends. It's awesome. Also, Millicent has an immortal cat. I am probably not very good at descriptions.

The Only One They Ever Reared - Sirius and Remus have to watch tiny!Harry while his parents are away. 

Mattie vs Amatonormativity - Mattie (from the Art of Escaping) discovers the concept of being aro. And aro-allo. I really just... like this kind of fic, even if I have no idea about the fandom?

We Won't Ever Say Goodbye - another world where people don't start ageing until meeting their soulmates, and even more non-soulmated aros - this time, it's Natasha Romanov, Clint Barton and Pepper Potts from the MCU. This is one of several fics I start reading when being surrounded by romance gets to be too much.

Getting Lost With You (600800 Seconds From Valentine's Day) - where Lavender is an aro robot, and her inner monologue is awesome. Also has a ranty author's note I'm really fond of. (I should probably comment on it, finally…)

(I also wrote a fic with an aro Luna Lovegood "Romantic Love and Crumple-Horned Snorkacks (Through the Years)", that is… at least 70% me projecting my experiences growing up onto her and mixing in some bits I heard from other people about them growing up? At least some people didn't find that unenjoyable.)

I... haven't really kept up with the newer fics, because uni, and I left out a lot of good ones because this post was starting to get too long, but - yeah. 

There's quite something there already, and I really would like for a lot of those fics to get more comments and kudos, and to just see more fics in general.

(Also, question to the mods of this blog: Can I just go and submit aro fic that gets submitted to the prompt meme to you throughout the year?)

Fandoms You Write For: Primarily HP and the Volstovic Cycle, though I’ve written for the MCU in the past, Yuri!!! on ICE, Skyfall, and Temeraire. I’m still more than willing to write for those fandoms (excepting, perhaps, MCU) when given the chance. I’ve written for other, forgotten, fandoms as well.

Where You Post: ao3. I like having my stats and feedback all in one place. (When I was still posting on LJ I used a statcounter to track hits. it could differentiate between returning visitors and unique hits which is a feature I wish ao3 had.)

Most Popular One-Shot: going by ao3 stats, in terms of kudos, hits and comments, that’d be Don’t Blame Me (It Was All a Blur Last Night). It’s a Harry/Draco accidental marriage fic with a strong domestic slow burn focus.

Most Popular Multi-Chapter Story: I don’t post very many multi-chaptered fics and when I do I usually post the whole thing at once. That said, going by ao3 stats, in terms of hits, kudos and comments that’d be Little Deaths and How to Avoid Them (or Draco Malfoy’s Guide to Stop Dying and Start Living Instead). (You can refer to this fic as Little Deaths, lmao.) It’s a very long slow burn Harry/Draco fic where they fall in love over reading queer books. 

Favourite Story You Wrote: All time? because I’m not sure I could answer that question. I have a fairly eclectic range of fics...hmm. Ok you know what, I’ll pick one fic I like from each year I’ve posted on ao3, except for 2010 because there’s only one fic there (there used to be more, I’ve taken a fair number offline).

2011: Early Morning, London Skyline - a Remus/Sirius steampunk AU that I had a lot of fun writing.

2012: oh, this one’s a toss up between Here Now, Gone Yesterday (or Back To The Future) and Fragments of a Life (this was also the year I wrote How to become a superhero which I do still like, but it’s not my favourite). Those are both Teddy/James, though the timetravel fic also has a Remus/Sirius aspect. I like them for different reasons - in the time travel fic I wanted to dig into the father-son relationship between Teddy and Remus and in Fragments of a Life I was going to just write a simple Teddy/James fic but got derailed entirely by an OC (James’ friend, he appears in other T/J fics as well) and I had to wrestle it back into a T/J shape. in hindsight this was like...a precursor? to future polyamorous fic I’d go on to write, in that James has a very significant relationship with two different people but back then I remember thinking that I couldn’t do that or nobody would read the fic. nobody likes OCs in HP fandom, lol. at least not like this. 

2013: This is where we begin (you know how it’ll end) - a magic AU/accidental marriage 00Q fic. I had fun with it.

2014: Up all night to get Bucky - Sam/Steve. I’m picking this because of how much fun I had writing it. 

2015: no longer easy on the eyes - Remus/Sirius muggle AU. in this one I wanted to dig into the father-son relationship between Remus and Teddy again, but this time Remus got to raise him. 

2016: Molasses - a volstovic cycle bakery AU. Ivory/Raphael slow burn. (hence the title.)

2017: oh man I had many fics this year I love. I’m going with Hope & Legacy: Black Brothers Edition, which is a Remus/Sirius ice skating AU (modern, but not muggle AU!) co-written with @eatingfireflies. we had a blast writing it and I’m still in love with the end result.

2018: I could pick Little Deaths - and I love that fic - but I’m going to go with Quickie, which is a bit of a weird fic but has a bunch of things in it that I love, namely complicated relationships. Harry/Ginny, Harry/Draco, Ginny/Blaise. Harry and Ginny are polyamorous in this fic and Harry is also aromantic.

2019: I barely wrote fics this year, but I have a soft spot a mile wide for Anthony J Crowley Fell, which is a Good Omens fic about Crowley falling and what he is falling towards.

Story You Were Nervous to Post: I’m not usually nervous about posting fics. I just post them. One notable exception is Quickie, because it’s very different from what’s “common fare” in H/D fandom and while it does have Harry/Ginny (and in the backseat, Ginny/Blaise), Harry/Ginny was established relationship while Harry/Draco was getting together so there was slightly more focus on them. But also H/D fandom is fairly notorious for Ginny bashing and keeping Harry away from her as much as possible (and making him gay rather than bi), so yeah, I was a bit nervous about what kind of feedback I would get on it, and to be honest there have been some incredibly shitty comments. I haven’t had this many offended and angry people in my inbox (both on ao3 and on tumblr) about a fic before I posted this one.

How Do You Choose Your Titles: I don’t have a process, I just agonise about it, and 80% of the time the working title ends up the final title so I don’t even know why I bother.

Do You Outline: Sometimes. It depends on the fic. I have made semi-detailed outlines for fics before (I say semi-detailed because the outlines are usually vague as heck) but most of the time I just write without a plan. I do always have some idea in my head of what’s happening next or some scenario to work towards (not necessarily the ending) so it’s not like I’m just...fumbling in the dark? I just prefer not to be bound to outlines because then I just have to rewrite the outline and that’s just...pointless.

Complete: I’m not sure what this means? do I always complete my fics? no. I have abandoned wips on various harddrives that I’ll never pick up again. In the past few years I haven’t started fics unless I truly intended to finish them, so my ratio of completed fic vs abandoned fic has vastly improved. When I was younger I was much more liable to just start another new fic without considering whether it would even work out - these days I give it a lot more consideration because I have less time to write, so I don’t want to waste it by working on something that isn’t viable.

In-Progress: I haven’t posted a wip since 2006 and I’m not about to start again.

Coming Soon: I don’t have anything coming soon. I have two fanfic wips I want to finish, but I have no deadline in mind for either of them so who knows if they’ll even be completed this year. I have a few origfic wips as well I want to finish, and I’m actively working on one of them right now.

Not yet started: Does it count that I want to sign up for holiday exchange fests this year, life circumstances permitting?

Do You Accept Prompts: Sometimes, usually when I explicitly ask for them. I don’t always fulfil them, they’re more of a brain cleanser.

Upcoming Story You Are Most Excited to Write: the wip I’m working on right now! since I don’t have brainspace for anything else anyway. I’m having fun with it.
