What in the name of caffeine...
We are a fast-thinking and fast-moving nation. We dislike sitting around and wait for anything. This is not because we have smart phones and on demand food, cars, and whatever you can think of. We have been like this since the morning cup of Joe became standard. For a while it was just for adults and then as time went on teens and now kids are consumed with caffeine. Why though? Why do we need this caffeine so much?
What makes us feel tired is something called adenosine. Now you might be thinking "What the heck is adenosine?". Don't worry I was where you are also. Now, adenosine is the primary neuromodulator that helps an individual to feel tired and eventually fall asleep. Now you may be asking yourself "Self what is a neuromodulator?" which is a very good question. Because I can tell it definitely is not something that Marvin the Martian came up with.

A neuromodulator is according to Merriam-Webster, "something (as a polypeptide) that potentiates or inhibits the transmission of a nerve impulse but is not the actual means of transmission itself." Now if your still scratching your head like me Dr. Jessica Krant says, "Essentially, a neuromodulator is a messenger released from a neuron that affects the transmission of the signals between neurons."
This is a vital neuromodulator to help the body restore its self from a long day of work and stress. Many times, we see adenosine teamed up with triphosphate, which makes up the powerful ATP. That is the molecule which gives many systems the power that they need. Alone, however, adenosine helps us sleep. According to B.B. Fredholm, ”Adenosine is mainly formed by the breakdown of intra- or extracellular adenine nucleotides, but hydrolysis of sadenosyl homocysteine also contributes. Levels of intracellular ATP are high (several millimolar).” It seems like the body works hard it produces more adenosine.(Fredholm, 2007, Adenosine Formation and Adenosine Levels section)
As I stated earlier that adenosine is essential the body’s ability to fall asleep. According to the Yale School of Medicine:
The currency by which the brain measures time awake is in the accumulation of adenosine. Adenosine is a byproduct of cellular metabolism, so the more active and alert we are during the day, the more adenosine builds up in the brain. Exercise for example can increase brain adenosine levels and through stimulation of adenosine receptors promote sleep. During sleep, adenosine is recycled and levels are reduced in the brain; less adenosine receptor stimulation leads to more alertness. In essence, the longer you’re awake, the more adenosine you accumulate, the more sleep pressure you acquire, and the more likely you are able to fall asleep at bedtime. Chemical synapses which which is takes place between the axon and the dendrites. This serves as the site of neuronal communication within the brain. The participation of membrane receptors is essential in the transmission of signals from one neuron to another. Adenosine and other neurotransmitters bind to receptors on the postsynaptic neuron, causing either excitatory or inhibitory effects. (Hammond & Esclapez, 2015a)
Dendrites, which are referred to as branched extensions of neurons, receive chemical signals. These signals help transmit information to the brain. The importance of dendrites lies in their facilitation of chemical synapses. The occurrence of chemical synapses takes place between the dendrite and the axon. (Harvard Online, 2017)
The place where this all comes together is in your brain. The region of the brain that helps produce sleep is the hypothalamus, and it is situated on top of the brainstem. The hypothalamus is about the size of an almond. (Hoefnagels, M., 2021)
Now there are many ways an individual will go to make themself stay awake. The most popular one by leaps and bounds would have to be every Americans favorite...caffeine. What is caffeine exactly? According to the Better Health Channel, caffeine is a stimulant, which means it increases activity in your brain and nervous system. It also increases the circulation of chemicals such as cortisol and adrenaline in the body. In small doses, caffeine can make you feel refreshed and focused. In large doses, caffeine can make you feel anxious and have difficulty sleeping. Like many other drugs, it’s possible to develop a tolerance to caffeine, which means you need bigger and bigger doses to achieve the same effect. (Caffeine, 2021, paras. 2-3)
So, caffeine is a drug that stimulates the central nervous system. It does this by irritating the adenosine receptors and not allowing them to make you feel tired. Because of this, the body cannot feel tired and be able to go to sleep. That's right it is a drug, however, it is not an illegal drug though you can become addicted to it.
There are many drugs that stimulate the CNS. The illegal drugs are cocaine, amphetamines, and methamphetamine. These drugs do more than just keep you up they are powerful drugs that can and will ruin your life. Drugs that are safer and not illegal are caffeine which you do not need a prescription for and a drug like modafinil. Modafinil is used by individuals who suffer with narcolepsy, and sleep apnea. I have sleep apnea and I use my CPAP machine, but I am still exhausted so I take modafinil daily.
Where those hardcore drugs are not socially acceptable unless you were in a 1980's movie then it might be, but that's a stretch.

Caffeine would be the only one out of them that would be considered socially acceptable. Though narcolepsy and sleep apnea are not socially unacceptable, one would not be quick to brag or talk about it. Cocaine, amphetamines, and methamphetamine are not socially acceptable; however, they seem to be the norm on shows like Breaking Bad where drug dealing is glorified.
Caffeine also effects other parts of your body as well. Since caffeine is easily absorbed into your stomach. Once caffeine is absorbed, it goes right into your bloodstream and it can raise your blood pressure as well (Pietrangelo & Olsen, 2023). Caffeine also makes you urinate more often. Northwood states:
Caffeine is a diuretic which means that it results in an increase in frequency of urination… Caffeine is thought to have a direct effect on the bladder’s smooth muscle. It may irritate the tissues of the bladder and potentially cause an involuntary bladder contraction. This can contribute to urge incontinence. (Northwood, 2012, paras. 3-4)
With the respiratory system, it seems like caffeine can help with asthma, but within reason.
 One study found that people who drink coffee every day have 29% fewer asthma symptoms. This same study did not find the same results for people who drink tea, which typically contains much less caffeine. Also remember that caffeine acts as a mild bronchodilator. So, any caffeinated drinks may offer some bronchodilation. However, the bronchodilator effects may depend on the amount of caffeine in the drink. Caffeine also helps lower respiratory muscle fatigue and can temporarily improve lung function. These are all good things for patients with asthma. (Coffee and Asthma, 2023, paras. 7-8)
For some there can be physical effects to too much caffeine. These effects include restlessness, increased heart rate, insomnia, nervousness, and nausea. (Caffeine: Overview, Uses, Side Effects, Precautions, Interactions, Dosing and Reviews, n.d.) to name a few.
Like I said earlier there can be positives like helping with asthma. There is another possible positive aspect and that could include memory enhancement. The hippocampus is very important in the role of learning and in memory. Research has picked up in recent years. According to Anand and Dhikav,
Hippocampus is a complex brain structure embedded deep into temporal lobe. It has a major role in learning and memory. It is a plastic and vulnerable structure that gets damaged by a variety of stimuli. Studies have shown that it also gets affected in a variety of neurological and psychiatric disorders. In last decade or so, lot has been learnt about conditions that affect hippocampus and produce changes ranging from molecules to morphology. (Dhikav & Anand, 2012, Figure Abstract). That part of the brain is also where neurological disorders and diseases like Alzheimer’s come from.
There were two people named Menahem Seagal and Eduard Korkotian. In 1999 they chose that area of the brain to see if the caffeine would stimulate that section of the rats' brains. They also knew that the calcium levels would rise, helping the process along the way.
I have learned many things since I started researching the effects of caffeine can have on the body. In my twenties, I would consume close to seventy-five ounces of coffee a day. I never felt the jitters that accompany caffeine. I found the study that Seagal and Korkotian did to be very interesting. Hopefully, someone can take that research further and find a good supplement to help with the effects of Alzheimer's disease.

Sweet The Sting : Nettles Plant Profile

Often when I think of Nettles I am drawn back to a beautiful memory from my time living in Maine.
I was visiting Avena Botanicals when the herbalist and owner Deb Soule stepped out from the garden with a jar full of fresh Nettle tea. Deb glows with an inner radiance and she smiled commenting on how much she enjoyed her Nettles in the morning. We all agreed that Nettles was an abundant medicine that more folks would benefit from using. And then we went back to washing roots and enjoying the warmth of the growing morning light with the scent of Nettle tea in the air.
Now, I didn't grow up with Nettles in my backyard and didn't have to worry about falling into its sting when out on walks as a kid. When I think of Nettles I find myself drawn into feelings of gentleness. And while the sting of Nettles has left many wary of the plant, the affect of Nettles as an internal remedy is so nourishing that the simple act of drinking fresh Nettle tea can be a clear invocation of gentleness. Combine it with other herbs like Milky Oat (Avena sativa) and you're brewing up a hug in a mug (recipe below).

Nettles has an affinity for the blood. It moves stagnant blood, improves circulation, and is a rich source of iron. The herb is also useful in reducing blood sugar levels and balancing blood pressure. Use in cases of anemia and general weakness and debility. The herb helps alleviate heavy and prolonged periods, nosebleeds, and to stops excess bleeding both internally and externally. Nettle also has a strong relationship with the kidneys, stimulating sluggish kidneys, moving stagnant water, and generally cleansing the fluids of the body.
During pregnancy, Nettles, in combination with other herbs such as Raspberry Leaf (Rubus idaeus), is a wonderful daily multivitamin for parent and growing fetus. Use in postpartum, too, especially if there has been blood loss. Nettles has an amphoteric affect on the milk supply meaning that it increases milk if there is too little or reduces it if there is too much. 
For reproductive systems in general, Nettle root has been used to treat prostatitis, vaginitis, and vaginal discharges. If infertility is an issue, Nettles is almost always useful for nourishing and revitalizing the body attempting to conceive. If low libido, erectile dysfunction or general sexual anxiety is present, Nettles helps to resettle and center the nervous system (combine with Avena sativa for an especially nourishing brew). Use during menopause for nightsweats - take as a tea before bed combined with Sage (Salvia officinalis). The root reduces prostate enlargement.
