Okay, I need to rant…

Can the fandom take a serious chill pill? For real! It’s NOT okay to bully others based off their character preferences or content choices when it comes to fanfics/pics!

There are so many good people out there that work hard to write their fanfics, take their in-game pics, taking the time to draw/edit their art, taking pictures for pure enjoyment, etc…

If you find something you don’t like, MOVE ON, unless it directly harms someone!

Do not resort to bashing them on ANY public forum (because that is harassment for one) and bullying is a real problem all over the world these days.

I’m seeing good content creators out there deleting and/or abandoning their profiles/content because of all the bashing!

I was also in a really fun Discord server that had a lot of the greatest and biggest Hogwarts Legacy artists in it, and now it no longer exists because of bullies!

I friggin HATE bullies as I’ve been personally affected by them and also have someone in my family in the hospital because of bullies right now! I’ve been extra stressed lately and I use my picture taking as a way to help relieve my stress.

Some folks love writing their fanfics to get away from real-life troubles too, and don’t need people that have nothing better to do than to bash others.

Constructive criticism is one thing, straight-up bashing is another!

You can create a rule by saying that "I will get my desires drastically whenever I blink my eyes" And it will happen because you created that rule!!

Lemme say you something... We can do anything in our damn reality. Get anything what we want by doing literally NOTHING. You can drastically, totally change your reality within a second! There is no such thing called "new". Nothing is new until you assume its new.

You create every shit. Just do your business, do any method which works for you, AND DO NOT HATE/JUDGE OTHER PEOPLE'S OPINIONS/BELIEFS UNTIL IT IS SOMETHING OFFENSIVE/INAPPROPRIATE.

There is no cons/demerits in loa until you create one.

You know what I hate about byler vs mileven ship discourse? The fact that there are whole accounts dedicated to shitting on the opposing ship. I'll admit that I'm biased in this conversation as a byler shipper, but I'm only acknowledging this issue because of the rampant homophobia in this fandom.

Look, there's nothing wrong with liking mileven and this post is not an invitation to argue about which ship you think will be cannon. With that being said, I wanna address some problems.

1. If you want to argue about the relationships between fictional characters, don't be a dick about it. At the end of the day stranger things doesn't take up your whole life and you as a person are more than the ship that you represent.

2. If you are going to argue (there's nothing wrong with that. I understand that discourse is a fun way to discuss a fandom) than avoid making personal attacks on the people you are arguing with. Ex: milevens being homophobic, bylers acting as if shipping mileven makes you stupid, etc. (Yes there are toxic bylers and we need to be accountable for that)

You know who else needs to be accountable though? Milevens who send actual death threats to young queer kids who just want representation in media. Mike and El are a cute fucking ship ok. It's really sweet and endearing but some (not all) milevens are ruining that wholesomeness with their hatred for our ship.

Tag usage is also a big issue. DO NOT use byler tags for anti byler posts. There are genuinely hateful messages being sent around that lots of impressionable queer kids will end up seeing. We will respect your tag as long as you respect ours.

That brings another thing into consideration; didn't bylers invade the anti byler ship a couple months ago? Didn't they use an oc to ship will with to make a mockery of milevens?

Yes and no. The anti byler tag got to a point that the vast majority of the content would be considered (by literal fucking definition) cyberbullying. It was a community so full of homophobia (towards fans AND noah) that bylers decided to dilute the negativity with shitposting. No real harm done. I also think it's important to mention that most anti milevens don't use the actual mileven tag to get more people to interact with their post.

I know I just mentioned tag discourse but I'm tagging everything because this needs to be talked about amongst our community. We need to make this a safer better space for queer people and it's really disappointing that I have to address this.

Things I've seen tumblr memeing about James Somerton doing à la "How did no one see how bigoted he was!" as if those things haven't been a significant part of tumblr culture for over a decade :

Presenting untrue and bordering on conspiratorial versions of (queer or otherwise marginalised) history without any sources

Completely disregarding and disrespecting any expertise on socio-cultural topics/humanities and distrusting academics and historians (incl. acting as if no academics or historians could be queer or marginalised)

Downplaying the role misogyny played in the historical oppression of queer women and concluding that queer men must have been more oppressed than queer women

Bi women are, at best, not as queer as "real" queer ppl, and at worst, simply equivalent to straight women

Despite nominal trans inclusivity, transmasculine ppl are functionally women when convenient (combined with the above, bi transmascs are functionally straight women)

Despite nominal trans inclusivity (bis), shamelessly attacking, threatening and actively endangering any trans woman who questions them or smth they find important (often by unfairly presenting her as violent or as a threat)

Having absolutely fucking wild and reductive takes about ace ppl, the oppression they face and their place in the queer community

Stating that marriage equality is an assimilationist fight while completely ignoring its direct roots in the horrifying consequences of the AIDS crisis for partners of ppl who died of AIDS

Praising western media creators from the past for queer coding even under censure and in the same breath condemning current non western media creators for being homophobic bc their representation isn't explicit enough

Blaming China for all existing homophobic censoring in western media

Assuming all queer media would be better told by western creators and by western standards

Only out queer ppl get to tell queer stories

Heavily criticising almost all queer media created by women or ppl they see as such (see above points about trans ppl) or involving/starring a significant amount of women for any perceived or real amount of "problematicness", but fawning over and praising and negating criticism of queer media created by and starring mostly or even functionally exclusively men (even when it could be argued that, you know, not involving/seriously sidelining women is a pretty clear example of misogyny which should probably be considered "problematic")

And I'm probably forgetting stuff or there's stuff I have internalised myself and don't recognise as an issue

Like idk but I feel like the takeaway from Hbomberguy and Toddintheshadow's videos should maybe be "be aware of such patterns in your communities bc they definitely exist" and not "this guy is uniquely awful" and I feel like a lot of the discussion I've seen surrounding this has been severely failing at that. Most ppl who've spent any significant amount of time on tumblr prob either have internalised at least one of those thought patterns, have had to de-internalise them, or have had to be extremely vigilant to not internalise them (which is done by, you know, seeking out other sources, which also seemed like an important takeaway from the videos)

Fanfics on AO3 are very well tagged these days. You see barely a few authors (mostly amateurs) who don’t tag their works. Most of the time, if there are no tags, then there are summaries and warnings listed in the author notes.

So if you’re reading a well-tagged work and going to comment shit about it, don’t. You know what you’re going to find in there. If it’s not something you like, just leave.

Don’t harass those authors, man. These platforms are just creative outlets to most of them, an escape from their realities. A lot of times, these are the things that keep them going. Don’t be an asshole about it.

Don’t like, don’t engage. It really is that simple.

If you’re really brimming with hate that much, find some other ways to let it out. Idk, maybe smash a plate, pick up a sport, whatever. Just don’t hate on people for doing what they can to keep going while not harming others.

this disability pride month, stop making jokes about people in wheelchairs standing up or walking.

can I stand and walk? sure, for a short while and with pain. the consequences for trying to be out all day without a wheelchair are that I'll be in bed for the rest of the week, too tired and in too much pain to move.

but the government won't give me my own wheelchair because they have the same attitude as these jokes - I can stand up, so I don't need one. exercise is good for you, you should walk!

it keeps me trapped in the house, unable to do anything more than short stints anywhere without borrowing or hiring a wheelchair - one that causes me pain to sit in and relies on someone to push me (usually with difficulty), because they're not going to have a high-end chair for that sort of thing.

it's not a miracle that a wheelchair user can stand or walk. it's something we should aspire to see more often.
