Peace & Love, Black Family! If you’ve ever been incarcerated or been an employee in a correctional institution, you’ll find out quickly that brothers are seeeerious about their reputation. Don’t get me wrong, everyone has their journey and I am NOT going to speak on that because I’ve met some SOLID BLACK SOLDIERS behind bars. But I’ve also met those who will go above and beyond to create and or protect the reputations they have! Yet, upon release, they are systemically buck-broken. The lessons and wisdom that can be taught to the youth by ex-felons is priceless! Too many of our Black men, both young and old, give too much credence to their reputations upon release. True statement—“Black folks don’t take mental health seriously at all!” My maternal great-uncle, a Vietnam veteran, was diagnosed as a (paranoid) schizophrenic with auditory/visual hallucinations who suffered/experienced substance use, homelessness, incarceration, family rejection, medication non-compliance, and involuntary psychiatric hospitalization. My family always talked about him as if “everything” he said was bizarre or illogical. But I shared this to say that my relatives are just one of millions in the United States that don’t take mental illness serious at all! We dismiss our problems so quick but don’t realize that everything we go through is a result of complex trauma. Such trauma continues to plague us for generations leading to other symptoms we go on to dismiss! We are here in the United States, looking for happiness in the same place we lost it! Please tell me how we will ever come to our senses if we don’t view mental health as a matter of importance? We are all experts, huh? We don’t trust the formally educated amongst us, huh? They are ALL coons, huh? We don’t trust nothing but trends! I’m probably repeating the obvious, but we don’t seem to get it! WE CANNOT BUILD IF WE REMAIN UNHEALED! Ask any medical professional, you have to rest to heal! Such “rest” requires isolation. Black folks have never isolated from White 🧔🏼‍♂️👩🏼 folks after chattel slavery!
