Bunny rescue! Hershey and several other rabbits were dumped outdoors in a rural area of Hamilton. For many reasons, domestic rabbits generally do not survive on their own in the wild, so the person who abandoned them in this way basically set them up for death. Thankfully, kind people were able to round up the rabbits and bring to Hamilton Animal Services. Because the bunnies were males and females, they were separated at the shelter. When he arrived, Hershey was in rough shape. His back end was so matted that HAS staff had to shave him down, and he had a wound on his nose that he was given medication for. A couple of months after their arrival, the other rabbits from this group were taken in by other rescue organizations, and we were able to take in Hershey when a foster home became available. Hershey is a lovely bunny so far. The scar on his nose has healed, and seems to be in good health. Hershey has a vet visit coming up where he will be neutered, and hopefully he can start the search for his forever home once he’s recovered from surgery. Welcome to Ladybird, Hershey! They brought him to @dragonanimalcarecenter for treatment but are unwilling to commit to him. They were hoping to find a "refuge" or shelter who would take him on. They weren't aware that all the shelters here are full and are especially unable to take on a cat in critical condition. Fortunately I'm just crazy enough to help this cat, despite my huge bill and full house. Blondie has panoleukopenia, which is rare for an adult cat, so I'm assuming he hasn't been on the streets long. He also has a bad mouth wound full of maggots. He is also critically dehydrated. I think he will be ok, but the next few days will be crucial. He is neutered but not ear tipped or microchipped, which leads me to believe that he was dumped at the corniche, either before or after he got ill. When Hamilton Animal Services sent us these photos of an injured stray rabbit, we couldn’t say no. Poor Boone has several serious injuries - puncture wounds (likely caused by an animal attack) a split lip, broken teeth, and other cuts and scrapes. The severity of the injuries may indicate that he went through more than just being attacked by an animal, but we will never know for sure. Boone is currently at the vet for treatment, and when he’s ready to leave the clinic he’ll be transferred to an experienced bunny foster home. Boone has a long road of recovery ahead of him, but we’ll be with him every step of the way. Guinea pig rescue! At the end of February, Alice was found outdoors at Christie Conservation area in Flamborough. Thankfully someone spotted her and brought her to Hamilton Animal Services before she was killed by wildlife, or by the cold temperatures. She has a little bit of frost bite on her feet, but she’s otherwise in good health. Sadly, Alice’s situation seems to be yet another case of an owner releasing their pet into the wild, thinking the animal can survive on their own. Domestic rabbits, rats, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils and other small animals do not have the genetic traits to survive without human care. They cannot find food on their own, and because of their colouring and lack of “wild animal” instincts, they easily fall prey to predators. If for whatever reason you cannot keep your pet and are considering releasing him/her into the wild, please don’t. Their chances of survival are slim, and their life until that point may be one of constant suffering… We got Alice out of the shelter, and she’s now settling in at her foster home. She has a vet appointment coming up to make sure everything is ok. Alice is a sweet pig, though a little shy. Can’t blame her though… some humans have not been very nice to her during her life. Alice’s foster mom has made her cage very comfortable for her, and she’s offering lots of treats and love…so hopefully she’ll come out of her shell soon. Welcome to Ladybird, Alice! Hamster rescue! Miley came into Hamilton Animal Services as a stray. It's likely that Miley’s owners no longer wanted her so they abandoned her outdoors. Thankfully she survived the cold and ended up safe. We were glad to get Miley out of the shelter and into a loving foster home. Miley’s foster family are just getting to know her. Rat rescue! Hattie was found as a stray and brought to Lincoln County Humane Society. They are over capacity for small animals right now, so they reached out to us for help. Hattie has skin issues and some lumps and bumps, but she seems otherwise healthy. Her foster home reports that she is a bit shy, but she happily accepts snacks, tucks them away in her hidey house and then comes back for more. She’s a sweet and gentle girl. Hattie will have a vet appointment soon to see if we can get her skin cleared up and get the lumps removed. We’ll do our best to get her healthy enough that she can eventually find a forever home. Guinea pig rescue! Ralph and Wilfred were abandoned in a box at a Walmart in Hamilton. Their nails were extremely long, and their fur was matted and dirty. They were clearly not properly cared for before they were dumped. Hamilton Animal Services was called, and they took the pigs in. Thankfully, we had an open foster home waiting for guinea pigs, so they didn’t have to spend too much time at HAS. We got the pigs to the vet on their rescue day, and despite their past neglect, they are relatively healthy. Ralph and Wilfred are now settling in at their foster home, and doing well so far. Emergency baby bunny rescue! Diamond was abandoned outdoors in Hamilton and brought to Hamilton Animal Services. We’d like to thank the kind people who were able to catch her and get her to safety. It was pretty obvious when she arrived at the shelter that Diamond wasn’t feeling too well. HAS staff got in touch with us to help, and they were able to transport Diamond to @spencercreekanimalhospital for us. By the time she arrived at the clinic, Diamond’s health had declined. Dr. Stubbs immediately put Diamond on IV fluids and a heating pad, and she was closely monitored by the staff. It wasn’t looking good, but we kept our hopes up. It’s been a few hours now since she arrived at the clinic, and miraculously, Diamond is sitting up and is trying her best to eat! We have all our fingers and toes crossed that she will continue to improve and that she’s through the worst of this. Thank you to HAS, and everyone at Spencer Creek for getting our little emergency bunny the care she so desperately needed.
