Right from the start I knew, you'd set a fire in me. And I'd rather be sad with you, than anywhere away from you. And hey, I can't believe I captured your heart.

When the bleachers said "And I'd rather be sad with you / Than anywhere away from you" I think they invented love

Stake my life on it
If somebody's gonna quit
Then I'd rather be sad with you
Than with any other girls but you
And hey, I can't believe I captured your heart

Bleachers - S/T
Jack Antonoff is one hell of a renaissance man. The man is mainly known as being a super producer, including winning producer of the year at the Grammys for the last three years. If you’re a bit older, though, you may remember him as a member of the band Fun and Steel Train, at least before he moved into production and his current band, Bleachers. I never got too huge into Bleachers, admittedly, but I was curious about his newest album. This is a self-titled album, and self-titled albums usually mean something like an artistic rebirth, so I wondered if we’d get something different here. I never got too huge into Bleachers, especially the 2014 debut, Strange Desire, because their sound felt like a super generic rehash of the 1980s, and its various forays into pop and rock. I’ve gone back to that album, especially after listening to this one, and it’s better than I remember, but it’s still a relatively generic love-letter to the 1980s. The Bleachers self-titled album, however, is a bit different, but I haven’t kept up with their last few albums, although I’ve heard rumblings that Antonoff has pretty much gone into unapologetic Springsteen worship. That doesn’t sound half bad, as a huge fan of The Boss, but I was still apprehensive.
I’ve given this album a handful of listens now, and this album is interesting, because it has some really cool ideas and some solid tracks to boot, but this album has some issues that prevent it from being truly great. It’s still really good, and it’s worth hearing if you want a good rock and pop album, but it’s admittedly an 80s Springsteen album he didn’t write. If there are a few things that work very well on this album, it’s gotta be Antonoff as a vocalist and his lyrics. This is his most personal and vulnerable album, as lot of the lyrics deal with the last few years of him falling in love again, and dealing with the state of the world, along with his mental health. The lyrics on this album are pretty damn good, and songs like “Modern Girl,” “Alma Mater,” “Hey Joe,” and “Self-Respect,” among others, are really well-written lyrically. His vocals are pretty good, too, despite how he sounds like Springsteen, just not as hoarse.
Where this album falters a bit for me is that its sound is weirdly all over the place. The album works very well when there’s a lot of energy, and on a handful of tracks, that’s exactly the case. “Modern Girl,” for example, is such a fun and energetic track that also features some E-Street Band saxophone. A few other tracks do, too, and when it does, the album becomes a lot of fun, but a majority of this album is very low-key and quiet. It’s almost like Antonoff is holding himself back, because this album is weirdly devoid of energy in a lot of spots. A few other tracks, such as the repurposed Brockhampton cut “Call Me After Midnight,” or “Hey Joe” are more energetic, but most of this album is very moody, introspective, and surprisingly quiet. Its tone is kind of muddled, which doesn’t make it bad, but it doesn’t flow very well. It doesn’t help that it’s 48 minutes long, and it feels its length by the end. I don’t really care for the closing track on here, anyway; entitled “The Waiter,” this song is a weirdly slow song that’s also completely auto tuned and it has no place here. It feels so strange, but it isn’t outright awful.
This is one of those albums that is worth hearing all the way through, and I really enjoy it, but you can skip through it a bit. When the album works, it works well, but it has a tone problem. I don’t mind a lot of the slower cuts, because the lyrics and vocals are done well, but this album may bore some people. This album is basically an album full of slower Springsteen songs, sprinkled in with a few more energetic cuts, which is weirdly the opposite of how most albums are (where there are more energetic cuts and a few slower ones). The Springsteen worship is a bit of an issue, too, but it doesn’t bother me that much, as I’m a fan of The Boss. I like this album, and I’d probably put it on my honorable mentions of this year, but it’s got some really solid songs. I just wish the tone wasn’t so all over the place, and there was more of an identity than sounding like The Boss, but the lyrics and vocals are quite good, so it kind of balances out. For being the first Bleachers album I’ve heard in a decade, it’s not half bad.
