I love how the whole group divides into subgroups and each subgroup deals with a piece of the whole thing without having any idea of what others are doing and then they all just come together to complete the picture. The whole time they adventure in subgroups I get so restless, when will they tell others, when will they unite again...stuff. And, it's a small town.

Why Jonathan is the best

In season one, the first time we see Jonathan Byers, he is cooking breakfast for his family. We are introduced to him as a good brother and a good son. A person who works while still in high school to help his mom out. A person who takes care of his younger brother not out of obligation but out of love.

Even though he was not home due to work, he still feels responsible for his brother's disappearance. He does his best to find his brother. He makes and puts up missing posters. He goes put to the woods to find any clue for him. He visits his father, a man he openly dislikes, just in the extremly slim chance Will is there.

When his mom says Will is inside the walls, he is concerned and tries to think logically, but he listens to her. As illogical as that sounds, and Joyce knows it is, he keeps her words in mind. When he hears Nancy describing the same thing his mom did, he does not shut it down. He does not dismiss it as just a coincidence, he hears her out. When they go to the forest and Nancy disappears, he calls out for her which is the major reason she comes back.

When Nancy tells him she is scared, he does not hesitate to stay. When she asks to sleep closer, he does not judge her. When Steve tries to pick a fight with him, he is more than willing to walk away. He is willing until Steve starts talking about his family, and that's when he takes a hit at him.

Will Byers comes back. One of the things that kept him alive was singing a song. That song is shown as an anchor, the thing heard on the walkie-talkie one of the first times he is intercepted. That song plays one of the first times he communicates with Joyce. A song his brother made sure he liked, not because Jonathan did, but because he resonated with it. One of the main reasons Will survived was Jonathan.

Then comes season two, Will is safe but overwhelmed. He feels like no one treats him like a normal kid anymore. He snaps at Jonathan (semi-rightfully so). Jonathan sees how much being accompanied on Halloween hurts him, so he trusts him. He tells him to go alone and have fun. He goes to a party and before he can have fun. He sees Steve storm off alone and upset and Nancy asks him to take her home. Again he does not hesitate. When Nancy talks about her relationship, he does his best to give advice. When she tells her his plan, as dangerous and reckless as it is, he follows her.

When Will was possessed and they were basically exorcising him with heat. He could not stand to see his brother in pain. He had to look away.

In season 3, we see him stand by Nancy's side unconditionally. As his job is on the line, as he is yelled at, as he is fired. Does he get mad at her? Yes, he does. I would, too. It is a nuanced discussion where both are right. Nancy will never understand what it's like to be raised in a low-income household. Jonathan will never understand what it's like to be dismissed for being a woman.

He acknowledges he was wrong. He had justifiable doubts but he does not look for excuses, he just apologizes.

During the first three seasons, we see him being the responsible one. During season 4, it is the first time he can relax. Have a life outside of being a brother, a son, and a boyfriend. We still constantly see him carrying for his friend and for his brother (mike is there, too). He tells Will he would love him no matter what.
