It’s Mardi Gras. Welcome to The King Cake Drive-Thru.
A tire shop parking lot has become a popular destination for those craving the beloved treat. The only problem: Which variety to choose?
Tumblr media
By Rick Rojas
Reporting from Metairie, La., and the kitchen of Joyce’s Sweets in Ponchatoula, where he sampled a praline-filled cake fresh from the oven.
Of course Mardi Gras is about boundless revelry: the weeks of balls and the parades that shower the streets of New Orleans with beads. But beneath all that, it is also a period of metamorphosis.
A midwinter Tuesday transforms from the most mundane of days into a festival of frivolity and vice. People shed the cocoons of their regular lives and emerge plumed in feathers and sequins.
And this year, just outside New Orleans, a tire shop that for as long as anyone can remember sold only car parts has become a bustling marketplace offering king cakes, the delicacy of the Carnival season, in just about any conceivable flavor.
All you have to do is drive up.
“Any idea of what you want?” Tiffany Langlinais asked a customer who pulled up on a Friday afternoon.
It is a daunting question at the King Cake Drive-Thru. Flaky or fluffy? Filled with cream cheese? What about strawberries, ice cream, even crawfish — or nothing more than the traditional plastic baby? Cakes from more than a dozen bakeries are on offer.
Others have had the idea to sell king cakes culled from various local bakeries, at one location, like King Cake Hub in the Mid-City neighborhood of New Orleans. But the innovation of the King Cake Drive-Thru, which Ms. Langlinais opened in January with her fiancé, Mike Graves, is the added convenience of accessing that bounty of options without even needing to get out of the car.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The drive-through has drawn nurses headed to morning hospital shifts, parents with cars full of children, tourists on road trips and people with limited mobility or weakened immune systems keeping them from easily browsing bakeries. Even the food writer for the city’s main newspaper, The Times-Picayune, passed through.
“I’m surprised nobody thought of it before you, Mike,” David Scripter told Mr. Graves as he dropped off an order of dozens of cakes from Bittersweet Confections, a bakery started by his wife.
“Sometimes,” Mr. Graves said, “the best ideas are right in front of you.”
The drive-through, which takes over the parking lot of Duckworth Tires in the suburb of Metairie three days a week, often has a line of cars waiting when it opens at 7 a.m., and has sold out its inventory well before 7 p.m., its listed closing time.
King cakes have always been a staple of the Carnival season along the Gulf Coast, a crown of pastry served during a burst of gluttony and good times before the austerity and fish fries of Lent. (King cake season begins on Jan. 6 — known as Twelfth Night, Epiphany or Three Kings Day — and ends with Fat Tuesday, or Feb. 13 this year.)
A king cake, in what many consider its purest form, is a ring of brioche-like dough with a dash of vanilla, a crunchy coating of purple, green and gold sugar and a small trinket known as a fève — usually a plastic baby — baked inside.

“It’s almost blasphemous to get cream cheese in it,” Pam Carr said the other day as she placed an order a staunch traditionalist never would: a pair of cream cheese and chocolate cakes to share with her co-workers at a warehouse store. “Those are the ones I like!”
King cakes are another front in a familiar New Orleans divide. There are those who believe that adhering to tradition means refusing to budge from how things have always been done, and those who maintain that experimentation and interpretation are not an insult to the past, but a tribute.
“Anyone can put anything in a king cake now,” Bridgett Saylor Meinke said as she surveyed the drive-through’s selection.
She grew up on old-school king cake but has been cautiously open to trying some newfangled varieties, like the bananas foster from Brennan’s (“Absolutely delicious,” was her take) and the strawberry cream cheese from Joe’s Cafe.
“That’s the one I’m on the hunt for today,” she said.
The drive-through’s menu varies some week to week, written on a white board by Ms. Langlinais. The couple buys the cakes from bakeries at a wholesale rate and sells them at a markup, with prices ranging from $17 to about $50 per cake. (They come in a range of sizes, too.)
On a recent weekend, there were plenty of traditional options, as well as the Bavarian cream from Caluda’s, an almond cake from District Donuts, boudin or crawfish varieties from Clesi’s Seafood, and lemon curd and vanilla bean cakes from Paw Paw’s Donuts.
The one with Vietnamese coffee filling from Dough Nguyener’s Bakery sold out quickly, as did the cinnamon cream cheese option from Tartine.
Ms. Langlinais wanted to lure customers with their favorite offerings from well-known spots but also nudge them toward cakes they may not know. Those from Joyce’s Sweets, a bakery in Ponchatoula, almost an hour away, are a prime example.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Joyce Galmon is known for her pralines, but she has made king cakes for 25 years, stuffing them with a filling made from broken pralines she could not sell.
“Miss Joyce has no social media,” Ms. Langlinais said. “You can only call her. She has no website.”
In past years, Ms. Galmon would sell as many as 90 cakes in a season. With the King Cake Drive-Thru, she has sold more than that in a single weekend.
Hers is a labor-intensive process, teasing out the dough, lathering on the praline filling, and then letting the cakes rest and rise for several hours. The result: a gooey, crunchy eruption of cinnamon and sugar.
“It’s got me on my toes,” Ms. Galmon said after delivering a fresh batch to the tire lot. “It was a hobby for me, but they’ve made it bigger.”
For all the excitement the drive-through has caused, it is a simple operation. From the street, it almost looks like a Covid testing site.
“No frills, as you can see,” Ms. Langlinais said, “with our tent and tables and Mike’s van.” She was referring to a raggedy but reliable 2007 Kia Sedona missing its middle seat.
Jimmy Duckworth, the owner of Duckworth Tires, gave them a pretty good deal on rent: a king cake a week. Last week, he got his favorite, the cinnamon cream cheese kind from Tartine.
“I’ve been very lucky in life,” he said. “Give them a break — why not?”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He nodded at Mr. Graves, who was busy helping customers.
“Look at him,” Mr. Duckworth said. “He’s all happy.”
A few years ago, Mr. Graves, 35, had been a lawyer in Manhattan, working in finance. Then he moved to New Orleans and started a novelty ice cream business called Bof Bars. He had no ties to New Orleans — he grew up in Chicago — but now he cannot imagine leaving. He and Ms. Langlinais are planning to get married in March.
Ms. Langlinais, who also owns a marketing business, grew up in a shrimping family in Biloxi, Miss., immersed in the elaborate world of Mardi Gras.
She became something of a king cake connoisseur. She has tried more than 100 varieties. She keeps a spreadsheet with detailed notes. (“Enjoyed the light filling but would want x3 for me to be truly happy,” she wrote of one encounter.)
“I know that it’s not a super refined operation,” Ms. Langlinais, 33, said, “but we want it to feel like us.”
There have been setbacks. One day last month, Mr. Graves woke up at 3 a.m. to find someone had busted a window on the minivan and stolen 100 cakes.
The whole endeavor has been exhausting: The excruciatingly early mornings hustling to collect the cakes at bakeries or rendezvous points in random parking lots. The 12-hour days on their feet at the drive-through. And there have been the urgent after-hours calls and texts.
“My kid didn’t tell me she got the baby!” said one friend desperate for a last-minute cake. (According to tradition, the one who finds the baby is responsible for supplying the next cake.)
The drive-through is usually open on Fridays through Sundays, but customers have asked if the couple would be selling cakes on Fat Tuesday.
Not a chance.
Duckworth Tires will be a tire shop again.
“I’ll be partying,” Mr. Graves said.

Small Business Spotlight Series: Best Bakeries in NYC
If there is one place no one can find the self-discipline to turn down, it’s a NYC bakery. With the bakery boom in full force in NYC, there are a number of mom and pop shops, unique to each neighborhood, that people gravitate towards. From the fresh aroma of buttery goodness to the oddly soothing site of constructed confections, our agents know where to bring their clients; and even indulge themselves. Below are bakeries from all over NYC ready to make your next dessert one-of-a-kind.
CHOCnyc Inwood  4996 Broadway, New York, NY 10034
At CHOCnyc, watch the pastries being made from scratch while enveloped in the aroma of chocolate and butter. “A few of the many options are Choc’s croissants, which put all others to shame, apple strudel as authentic as any café in Vienna, and their Jubilation Cake, sold by the slice and extremely similar to what we used to call blackout cake, a NYC classic,” agent RoseAnn Herman says. “Friends have designated me the official ‘bringer of dessert’ to any get-together now that they know what we know, that CHOCnyc is the gold standard of bakeries.”
(Recommended by RoseAnn Herman of our Riverdale office)
The Chocolate Room Park Slope 269 Court St., Brooklyn, NY 11231
Agent Joanna Mayfield Marks believes The Chocolate Room, right near Barclays Center, is a great night time dessert bar. “Friendly, adorable atmosphere with antique display cabinets and the best banana split you have ever tried,” says Marks. With brûléed bananas and brandied cherries on top, I don’t think anyone would disagree with her.
(Recommended by Joanna Mayfield Marks of our North Slope office)
Levain Bakery Upper West Side  167 W 74th St., New York, NY 10023
“Home of the best darned chocolate chip cookie in the universe,” says agent Keith Marder. Levain Bakery keeps it simple, but delectable. The most classic, yet delicious cookie lives at Levain Bakery, and every cookie on the menu is freshly baked daily. Levain is also known for other amazing items such as a baguette with butter and jam.
(Recommended by Keith Marder of our West Side office)
By the Way Bakery Upper West Side  2442 Broadway, New York, NY 10024
Gluten-free people! The best gluten free bakery, according to agent Amelia Gewirtz, is By the Way Bakery. So, just how good is it? “When I was selling a large home in the Cornwall across the street we had multiple offers - some were from buyers who were emotional (tears in eyes) saying they had to live there not just because it was a beautiful home but because it was across the street from By the Way Bakery,” says Gewirtz. She thought it was a bit dramatic, but after trying the cranberry orange baked goods and macaroons, she understood their obsession. For those in Connecticut, there is even a Greenwich location!
(Recommended by Amelia Gewirtz of our West Side office)
Aux Merveilleux de Fred West Village  37 8th Ave, New York, NY 10014
Once voted #1 bakery in New York on Yelp and BuzzFeed, Agent Kleopatra Phili has a close connection to this elegant spot. “The bakers can be seen through the picture window with their white uniforms and white hats, gingerly placing their baked goods on the shelves that line the window,” Phili says. “The sight of the confections, the aroma of the baked goods, and the bespoke interiors with an oversized chandelier remind me of Beauty & the Beast!” Aux Merveilleux de Fred puts the style and elegance into baked goods, and are known for their brioche, waffles and merveilleux.
(Recommended by Kleopatra Phili of our West Side office)
Orwashers Upper East Side  308 East 78th St., New York, NY 10075
Orwashers is the definition of chic, providing a very European, neighborhood feel. “They have a glassed-off kitchen in the back so you can watch as they make their breads fresh,” says agent Matt Martin. “It’s unlike anything I have ever seen before.” Martin’s absolute favorite is the New York Breakfast, which takes a unique spin on the classic bagel and lox combo, making theirs with dill cream cheese and topping it off with lemon zest. Other favorites include filled donuts and apple turnover.
(Recommended by Matt Martin of our Village office)
Lee Lee’s Rugelach By a Brother Harlem  283 W 118th St, New York, NY 10026
If you are walking down the quiet, tree-lined Harlem street, your nose will go into autopilot and steer you here. Alvin “Lee Lee” Smalls, owner of Lee Lee’s, arranges a mechanical fan to peek outside the door of his bakery, blowing out sweet scents of freshly baked pastries to passerby. “Lee Lee’s has the best Rugelach in town, crowd favorite in his bakery. “I love the chocolate and walnut, but the apricot is a favorite for everyone,” says agent Leanne Stella.
(Recommended by agents Sandy Wilson, Leanne Stella and Mika R. Jones of our Harlem office)
The Corner Café and Bakery Bronx  3718 Riverdale Ave‎, Bronx, NY 10463
This busy and bustling Kosher Dairy restaurant features many delectable mealtime choices such as crispy fresh salads and tasty omelets, but be sure to leave room for dessert! According to agent Vicki Green, “you’ll find some of the most wonderful cakes and cookies on the planet.” These delectable treats include creamy strawberry shortcakes, light and fluffy chocolate mousse cake, a creamy and gorgeous custard fruit tart and mandelbread “even better than grandma’s.”
(Recommended by Vicki Green of our Riverdale office)
Silk Cakes Forest Hills  98-14 Metropolitan Ave, Forest Hills, NY 11375
Silk Cakes is one of the most unique bakeries in Queens. Owner/chef Judy Lai was inspired to create a perfect refreshing blend of East Asian and traditional Western flavors in a menu that includes everything from cupcakes and rainbow cookies to milk buns, pandan chiffon cake and seasonal lotus blossom cake. “This summer, the bakery received media attention by switching out frosting and replacing it with ice cream on their cupcakes, resulting in delicious combinations like vanilla cake topped with coconut-pandan and chocolate cake with nana chocolate bits,” agent Denise De Maria says. Silk Cakes creates beautiful customized cakes for all occasions.
(Recommended by Denise De Maria of our Forest Hills office)
Sweet Generation East Village  130 1st Ave, New York, NY 10009
Indulge in confections while supporting the social purpose of Sweet Generation. “The staff are at-risk teens and young adults who, through the experience of working at the bakery and through specially designed career workshops, are given the opportunity to learn about customer service and entrepreneurship,” says agent Vivian Ducat. “The storefront has an old-time feel, with a large case at the front, filled with delicious goods.” Sweet Generation also won ‘Best Cupcake’ by the Village Voice, a special distinction in cupcake-saturated NYC.
(Recommended by Vivian Ducat of our Harlem office)
Feel free to reach out to our agents on what exactly to buy. Many of them have meetings in these cozy spots, due to their special atmospheres. When it comes to sweets, our agents don’t mess around!

The Essential Guide to Breakfast at Disney World
At Walt Disney World, nearly everything qualifies as a breakfast. Hot dogs are slung by 10 a.m., last night’s desserts double as sugary morning fare, and the Dole Whip stand opens earlier than your usual workday begins. Truly, there are no rules.
But while the options are boundless, sitting down to a full meal of eggs, bacon, and toast here can be a merciless catch-22: You either cannibalize your early-morning park time (precious hours when ride lines are shorter than usual) with dining, or forego the serious sustenance required for the long day ahead.
There are, in fact, some fantastic eye-openers on the property, but you’ll have to know where to find them. Which is why we’ve highlighted the best breakfast tacos to scarf on the run, specialty foods worth taking a break for, and when you should just rely on the emergency granola bars in your backpack.
Desperate for caffeine? The most obvious options are called out below, but refer to Eater’s comprehensive guide to coffee and tea across the property for info on where to get hopped up throughout the day.
Tumblr media
The famous Cat Tail pastry at the Cheshire Café
Magic Kingdom
With an updated park entry procedure, having a reservation no longer gets you into the park as early as it used to. Character dining options are either the Crystal Palace buffet with Winnie The Pooh & Friends (don’t knock it, Eeyore is a delight) or the iconic Cinderella’s Royal Table, with tableside princess visits inside the castle’s upper towers. The only other sit-down options are Plaza Restaurant, which just introduced breakfast, and Be Our Guest (more on that below).
Signature morning sweets include Cheshire Café’s eponymous “cat tail,” a pink and purple icing-drizzled Danish log, and the warm jumbo cinnamon roll at Gaston’s Tavern; both are fine, not great. If you prefer to start the day with a macaroni-and-cheese-topped hot dog, you’re in luck, because Cosmic Ray’s, Lunching Pad, and Casey’s Corner all start serving lunch fare bright ’n’ early at 10 a.m — with the frozen pineapple favorite, Dole Whip, up for grabs as early as 9 a.m.
Top Pick: Sleepy Hollow, whose freshly made sweet and savory waffle sandwiches hit the spot, unless you indulge in a Mickey-shaped one instead. (Late risers, take note: the ham, egg, and cheese waffle sammy is served ’till noon.) Avoid: Be Our Guest. The hottest ticket in town is a travesty at breakfast time, when a chaotic pre-order format ruins its delightful Beauty and the Beast-themed interiors. The food isn’t terrible and comes out lightning quick, but it remains a pricey breakfast that’s not entirely worth it. Coffee: The Main Street Bakery (halfway down the main drag, right-hand side) hides the park’s very own Starbucks, while a Joffrey’s Revive stand in Tomorrowland (by Space Mountain) serves solid coffee without the long lines.
Disney’s Hollywood Studios
Morning options are tough to come by inside this timeless take on Tinseltown, with most quick-service locations opening early with lunchtime foods in busy months, but grab-and-go eats, such as the whoopie pie-like carrot cake cookie, at the Trolley Car Café Starbucks are a reliable choice. That is, if you’re not eating omelets and Mickey waffles with familiar Disney Junior faces at Hollywood & Vine, the only spot in the park offering character dining.
Top Pick: Woody’s Lunch Box in Toy Story Land. The strange delights at this quick-service stand are worth stopping for, particularly the indulgent scrambled-egg bowl with smoked brisket, gravy-smothered tater tots, and a s’mores French toast breakfast sandwich with graham-crusted brioche. It’s less sweet than it sounds, and you can even use Disney’s mobile-ordering service to skip the line. Avoid: ...eating lunch fare at 10 a.m. It won’t end well. Coffee: Starbucks is located within the Trolley Car Café (at end of the entrance’s central stretch, right-hand side), but a Joffrey’s Coffee stand is conveniently lurking at the entrance of Toy Story Land.
Tumblr media
Cheesy stuffed croissants at Les Halles Boulangerie
Epcot
Epcot’s World Showcase is the place to chow down on international cuisine within themed pavilions during the day, but only Mexico, Norway, and France are open pre-11 a.m. If you’re back there — most likely for a morning ride on Frozen Ever After — there are sweet Scandinavian pastries and a salmon-and-egg bagel at Kringla Bakeri Og Kafe, or Mexican specialties like chilaquiles and pambazo de chorizo con huevo at Cantina de San Angel.
You won’t totally destroy your plans by sitting down for breakfast, so munch on a family-sized platter of hearty staples with Chip ’n’ Dale, Pluto, and Mickey Mouse at Garden Grill or with a bevy of princesses at Norway’s part-buffet, part-restaurant Akershus Royal Banquet Hall, the park’s two character dining locations. If you’re just putzing around Future World between morning Fastpass reservations and need a quick bite, Sunshine Seasons, with its souffle, croissant egg sandwich, and healthy options like a tofu wrap and overnight oats, is your best bet.
Top Pick: Les Halles Boulangerie in the World Showcase’s France pavilion for a tempting bakery case of croissants and chocolate-filled pastries, along with ham- and cheese-stuffed croissants, quiches, and croque monsieurs. Avoid: Waiting until World Showcase opens at 11 a.m. Have a little something, even if it’s a piece of fruit — you’ll want to pace yourself once the real eating begins. Coffee: Here, Starbucks is called Fountain View; walk past Spaceship Earth and it’ll be on your right-hand side, across from the fountain. Can’t wait? There are Joffrey’s Coffee kiosks beneath the monorail station, over by Test Track, and within the World Showcase.
Disney’s Animal Kingdom
Given that your morning plans likely include waiting for the immensely popular Avatar: Flight of Passage ride, skip the sad pastries sold at pop-up stands nearby and send a family member to retrieve French toast sticks, sausage-and-egg biscuits, or sweet pineapple lumpia from Pandora’s nearby Pongu Pongu stand. (The line now snakes through an outdoor walkway between Pandora and Africa, alleviating any difficulty of shimmying through a proper queue to find them — a big Disney no-no.)
Your only true sit-down options are Tusker House, a character breakfast buffet with good food and a few African options (mealie pap, beef bobotie) or, gulp, Rainforest Cafe, so opt for the former if you’re inclined. It’s got the core characters — Mickey, Daisy, Donald, and Goofy — and some of the best grub, too.
Top Pick: Yak & Yeti Local Foods Cafe. The quick-service counter in Asia has an array of made-to-order sunrise sandwiches — bacon and egg on challah toast, sausage and egg on an English muffin — as well as a breakfast burrito and tacos, all served with herbed hash-brown bites. Avoid: Kusafiri Coffee Shop, the kiosk in Africa whose oversized Mickey-shaped cinnamon roll is not as good as Instagram would have you believe. Coffee: Creature Comforts houses the park’s Starbucks (take the left at the park’s emblematic Tree of Life; it’ll be on your left-hand side), but if you’re headed toward DinoLand U.S.A., Isle of Java is more convenient.
Tumblr media
Tonga toast at the Polynesian Village
Around the Resort
All Disney Resort hotels offer breakfast, but only some are worth changing your plans for:
Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort: Kona Cafe offers loco moco and macadamia-nut pancakes, but is most famously known for the cinnamon sugar-crusted, banana-stuffed sourdough loaf that is Tonga Toast. Reservations can be tough to nab, so you can also grab the toast to go (sans strawberry compote) at Capt. Cook’s.
Disney’s Yacht Club: Ale & Compass offers one of the best breakfast buffets in the park (they’ve even got whitefish salad!) as a small upcharge to its selection of inventive entrees that are, for the time being at least, priced competitively.
Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge: Sanaa’s limited but substantial breakfast menu, paired with up-close views of animals, makes it a top choice time and time again.
Disney’s BoardWalk Inn: If you’re looking to give your kids some princess magic and yourself a table-service breakfast (poached eggs with fennel sausage; sopressata-stuffed breakfast calzone) far superior to the character buffets, Trattoria al Forno is the spot.
Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa: 1900 Park Fare is the ol’ standard when it comes to character dining, but Grand Floridian Cafe not-so-secretly has one of the best breakfast menus (and calmest atmospheres) on property.
Walt Disney World Swan & Dolphin Resort: Fuel is the ideal lobby pit-stop, with a full espresso bar, egg sandwiches, and endless packaged snacks ideal for scarfing while waiting for the Magic Kingdom bus.
Four Seasons Resort Orlando at Walt Disney World Resort: Ravello not only has a superior breakfast buffet, but hosts character dining a couple days a week, giving you quality time with Goofy, Mickey, and Minnie alongside a gourmet spread of charcuterie, house-made granola, and eggs made to order.
Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort: The perk of staying at a Disney hotel that recently underwent renovations is an updated quick-service menu that almost always includes unexpected surprises. Enjoy breakfast Cubans, coconut waffles, and a chorizo tostones Benedict at Centertown Market or try the cream cheese-guava French toast and yucca hash at the hotel’s Spyglass Grille.
Disney’s Port Orleans Resort — French Quarter: Load up on breakfast po’ boys, baguette French toast, breakfast shrimp and grits bowls, and beignets from the quick-service counters at Sassagoula Floatworks & Food Factory.
Disney’s Art of Animation: Long heralded as the best quick-service food of all value-tier hotels, Landscape of Flavors delivers a strong and varied bounty, with breakfast sandwiches on naan bread, challah French toast, and vegan seitan scrambles.

[Duplicated:154316] Great Vegan Food in Edinburgh
Going vegan – or vegetarian – in Edinburgh
Edinburgh has been the proud holder of the title “UK’s Most Vegan-Friendly City” on a number of occasions as is evidenced by the i-heart-tofu hashtag on Insta! With 120 listings on the Happy Cow app, vegans and vegetarians alike won’t have a problem finding somewhere to eat in Edinburgh. We have compiled a list of some of our favourites.
Holy Cow With a 100% vegan, organic and Fairtrade menu, Holy Cow, located in the heart of Edinburgh, will delight vegans and omnivores alike. They have a great range of delicious-sounding burgers made from portobello mushrooms, pulled jackfruit, tofu and much more, all served with a generous side helping of their legendary homemade chips. Otherwise, try their Holy Sandwiches, eg Hot Green Pea with lettuce, wasabi green pea hummus, cucumber, spring onion and sprouts – yum! Open 10am – 10pm weekdays and 10am-6pm on Sundays.
Paradise Palms Located in the heart of Edinburgh University’s campus buildings, Paradise Palms is a rather kitsch bar but has a fabulous cocktail menu and a great atmosphere. The bar is home to Lucky Pig, which has a completely vegetarian menu and includes dishes such as black bean and seitan burger, pulled BBQ jackfruit sub or roasted squash chilli bowl and corn bread. Another highlight of their menu is their homemade dipping sauces which are all vegan and gluten free, including a vegan garlic aioli and a Buckfast-flavoured BBQ sauce. American soul food at its best.
Harmonium Well-known on the vegetarian circuit in Edinburgh, you’ll find all of your old favourites here, including creamy mac and cheese, juicy burgers, tasty pizza and tempting desserts - all vegan of course. Even the wine list is vegan. With dishes like Harissa Baked Cauliflower with za’atar, pomegranate, coriander seed, mint, dill, parsley, lemon and almond or pan Seared King Oyster Mushroom Scallops with crispy chorizo, sage butter and leaf, just make sure you are hungry if you choose this eatery.
David Bann Those looking for posh nosh in Edinburgh should head for David Bann where the “nouvelle” menu sweeps through most of the globe, from the Mediterranean to the Pacific, via India and Thailand. Considered one of the best vegetarian restaurants in Edinburgh, the food is innovative and eclectic – think Thai fritters, a selection of tempting pastry dishes and delicately spiced smoked tofu, and how about whiskey panna cotta for dessert? The stylish interior doesn’t mean prices to match – you can enjoy fine dining at very reasonable prices. With its location just off the Royal Mile, it’s also considered a wonderful place for a romantic dinner for two.
@Pizza Don’t think for a moment that you won’t be able to find a pizza joint if you’re vegan. @Pizza is located in Edinburgh’s West End and, with their pizzas only taking 90 seconds to cook, they will do it right in front of you! There are two ways you order your pizza - either build your own from their wide range of toppings available (with vegan options clearly marked) or you can choose one of their pre-made combinations, all of which can be veganised on request. Even the cheese is 100% vegan.
Hendersons Edinburgh’s original vegetarian restaurant, Hendersons is still going strong and now has several branches throughout the city. It offers contemporary vegetarian and vegan cuisine while holding firm to its founding philosophy of serving wholesome food made using fresh, local and organic ingredients. The unique buzz of the iconic Salad Table restaurant in Edinburgh’s historic New Town is complemented by the informal atmosphere of Hendersons Vegan restaurant on Thistle Street. The original Hendersons Shop & Deli on the corner of Hanover and Thistle Street is a true Edinburgh institution. In 2015, they also opened at Holyrood next to the Scottish Parliament. Bread Street Brasserie This classy bistro, which emphasises seasonal Scottish produce, features clearly labelled vegan options on its menu and also holds a monthly vegan evening that proves a hit with vegans all over Edinburgh. Each month the menu completely changes, so no two meals here will ever be the same.  Having said that, the structure of the menu stays pretty much the same from month to month: there are usually three options to choose from for each course, and usually a gluten-free option or two as well. Naked Bakery Having been described as serving “pieces of edible art”, the cakes and macarons at Naked Bakery have had a cult following for a while. A new savoury lunch menu was launched in February 2019, which is also completely vegan. Have you ever wondered what a pink waffle is? Well, in this establishment, it’s a light and crispy waffle served with whipped cream, strawberries, banana, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries and maple syrup. Pink seems to be a theme – you could also try the Naked Bakery Signature Burger, the house-made brioche bun with Beyond Meat Burger, lettuce, tomato, beetroot hummus, avocado, pink mayo and sweet potato fries. The décor is just as beautiful as the food - walls are covered in Instragrammable purple flowers, table numbers are labelled with beautiful gold signs and the plates, bowls and cups make a statement in black and gold.
Lazy Lettuce Lazy Lettuce’s mission is to provide tasty vegan fast food that’s decent value for money.  The team behind the eatery have been providing tempting vegan burgers at many festivals and events around the city but now have a regular pop-up residency at The Well Café every Friday and Saturday night just off Nicolson Street. Examples of their fine fare include “honey-mustard chicken”, a chicken-style patty, seeded bun, “honey-mustard” sauce (with agave), cheez, lettuce and onions. They are also well-known for their soy milkshakes.

Media Tasting at One-Ninety Bar
One-Ninety Bar, located within Four Seasons Hotel Singapore proved to be a rather cozy yet elegant place for an afternoon high tea over the weekends. With its recent launch of its floral infused treats crafted by Pastry Chef Audrey Yee, be prepared for a delightful mix of sweet and savoury as you laze your afternoon away.
This lovely floral menu consists of multiple components which would be sure to get you full and satisfied. Select from the menu of hot/cold tea or coffee as you wait for the 3 tier selection of finger sandwiches, savouries and other sweet treats to arrive. Each of us are allowed to select 2 rounds of beverage and I had the hot Provencal Herb Tea which had a hint of ginger first. I would probably recommend hot tea over iced ones.
Featuring the 3rd tier: Forest Mushrooms on white bread, Spiced Carrot Salad on sourdough, Smoked Salmon and Sour Cream on Rye Bread, Cucumber and Fine Herb Cream Cheese on Sundried Tomato Bread, Egg Salad with Osetra Caviar Coupe.
Featuring the 2nd tier: Sakura Blossom Puff with Strawberry, Apricot and Pistachio Chocolate Cup, Candied Violet Macaron, Chocolate Praline.
Featuring the 1st tier: Yuzu Elderflower Meringue Tart, Raspberry-Rose Mousse, Manjari Chocolate Pot de Crème.
As you are done with the 3 tier of indulgence, freshly baked Lavender, Vanilla Scones and Brown Sugar Shortbread would be served shortly, followed by Spanich and Comte Cheese Quiche, Turkey Ham and Gruyere Cheese Toast and Brioche with Cherry Compote.
Probably you want to keep the scones to the last as they could be rather filling. End your floral high tea session with the 2nd round of beverage or request for a refill of hot water in your pot!
