Year-End Poll #72: 2021
Tumblr media
[Image description: a collage of photos of the 10 musicians and musical groups featured in this poll. In order from left to right, top to bottom: Dua Lipa, The Weeknd and Ariana Grande, The Weeknd, 24kGoldn, Olivia Rodrigo, Doja Cat and SZA, Silk Sonic, Olivia Rodrigo, Lil Nas X, Justin Bieber and Daniel Caesar and Giveon. End description]
More information about this blog here
In 2021, the charts started to open up again after the lockdowns, but we're mostly seeing how this is affecting newer up-and-coming artists. Olivia Rodrigo's Driver's License was notable for shattering streaming records upon its release, making Rodrigo the first female artist since Carrie Underwood to have a single debut at number one. With her debut album, Sour, the trend of music of the 2020's playing homage to previous decades will continue. Good 4 U is obviously inspired by the pop punk of the early 2000's. The Weeknd's Save Your Tears continues the synthwave influence of his fourth album, After Hours. Levitating, like most of Future Nostalgia, is nu-disco. And Silk Sonic, a musical project conceptualized by Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak with assistance from funk legend, Bootsy Collins, obviously takes influence from the funk and Philadelphia soul sound of the 70's. I like how the final decade in this series feels like a look back at the previous years we've covered. It's like everything is coming full circle.
But the 2020's isn't just made up of homages to the years prior. As far as trends to look towards, obviously TikTok is going to have a major say in what reaches the charts (I believe almost all of the songs listed trended at some point). Could be a chicken and egg thing, since obviously songs that are already popular are going to be more widely used on the app. But as we'll come to see, TikTok will also help to bring songs to the forefront that otherwise wouldn't have charted. Lyrically, the music of the 2020's pop scene also seems more introspective than the start of the previous decade. This works well with the lean towards the "bedroom pop" sound, but even the uptempo dance songs bring up queerness, depression, therapists, and anxiety. Whether these songs handle these topics well is another debate I don't feel like having, but it speaks to a shift in both awareness as well as self-image.

Miasma. Do you have Jutty singing Montero, by any chance? I keep seeing him appear and I need the song but I can't find it. (Yes I am still in the shadow realm but you know, I'm a sucker for Jutty)
I do not! I imagine that was from one of his streams - if anyone has this, please share!!

[img ID: a photo of Lil Nas X and two of the dancers from his Boston concert on stage in front of the "Garden" backdrop from the Montero album cover. LNX has large, blue and purple, ornate butterfly wings and is wearing a white and gold sequined, sleeveless crop top, and matching parachute pants. the two dancers who are visible are wearing matching pants, but are topless. a third dancer's leg is visible to the right of the frame(stage left). there is actually another dancer behind LNX, obscured by the wings. their shoes are visible between LNX's feet. all of them are wearing white sneakers.
LNX has his arms crossed in front of his chest, one hand pressed to his collarbone, the other holding the mic, in a position that looks a bit like hugging himself, and is smiling stunningly as he sings into the microphone. the two dancers who are fully visible are standing with their feet apart & hands behind their backs in an "at ease" military stance. the third(stage left) appears to be in the same stance. /ID]

Laureano Gabriel
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Laureano’s 3D sculptures are too advanced for web2. We can’t even properly display the interactive sculptures that allow the user to zoom in and appreciate the attention to detail, like in Ouroboros. The series HiAdd depicts moving, 3D sculptures of human heads symbolizing the beauty underneath our skin. The subtle reference to these as “PFPS” in the description may be the most subversive and clever aspect of these incredible works.

Halil Ibrahim Cetinkaya
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Halil’s work matches his online persona. Always active and everywhere at once supporting other artists. He mirrors the fast movement in his long-exposure photographs. These light trails remind us how fast we are all moving through this space, and life, while his photos of copper smiths in Heroes of Art, remind us of simpler times when things took time and care to appreciate the craft. Halil’s photos capture the balance required to make it in this space and in life.

Javier Montero
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In these abstract gifs, Javier Montero plays with light waves or even sound waves. Playing with the dimensions of each gif, Javier mixes glitch, motion, pixel, and monochrome, he manages to cover it all…even the existential. While many of his works will mesmerize his viewers VPF153(INERTIA) will leave his audience with something more (or less if you find it bleak and emptying). It depicts an endless stream of silhouettes passing through into the light, either crossing over to the other side or like flies to a bug zapper. There's either comfort in the fact that there are so many of us going together or despair because we are helpless against the draw.

Turmusov
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Turmusov’s glitch motion art focuses on mysterious characters. Sometimes shown as just shadowy figures and other times like demonic possessions these dark and cryptic beings resemble something far more realistic and traumatic: individuals living in countries surrounded by perpetual war. The most revealing of all of his works, Exhausted, was the first piece minted and shows a city at night with the sky lit up by anti-aircraft missiles. In his first, Turmusov told his audience he was exhausted, is it any wonder that his characters are drawn as black, gaseous, or filled with fiery rage?

Ermac Kiyani
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
By now we should all know the name Mahsa Amini and support the uprising surrounding her death. As an outsider to that world, it’s important to remember that a country's laws do not always reflect the values of the people. We are witnessing what happens when these two forces diverge and are forced to reconcile their differences. And while the issue at the heart of this is a woman’s issue, it’s important, as men, to remember your role in this world and that supporting women, celebrating their beauty, without objectifying them, in times like these can be just as impactful. Ermac Kiyani is one of those men, fighting the good fight through his art, and should be commended for his example and followed accordingly.

Juve-Roma Primavera 0-1: diretta tv, formazioni, dove vederla in streaming

By Chris Azzopardi The documentary, streaming on Max, follows the queer singer-rapper on the road and at home, but the best scenes by far are when he is onstage. Published: January 25, 2024 at 07:00AM from NYT Movies https://ift.tt/toj8ngJ via IFTTT
