Tommy Flowers mural outside the Tommy Flowers pub, Poplar

Tommy Flowers designed and built Colossus, the world's first programmable electronic computer computer, which helped solve German encrypted messages in World War Two. He had to use his own funds to build Colossus. He was born in Poplar. After WW2 he wanted to build more computers like Colossus but was refused a bank loan because the bank didn’t believe such a machine would work. His story kind of sums up so much that is wrong with UK, gifted and talented people who never get the opportunities and recognition they deserve.

CONFESSIONS OF A DANCER ‘THE MOSIAH SOLO’ by Alaine Grant

This was written on Thursday night, September 7, 1988 after a particularly good rehearsal. I was so wound up and couldn’t sleep and decided to listen to the music for the Mosiah solo “one more time”.

At first I was just going to write something to think about while waiting in the wings for the gunshots. Once I started, however, the first part flowed as I thought about the movement sequence; and some of what I wrote suggested gestures I could try.

The funny thing is I never used it again while I was still struggling to put it all together – sequence, music, attack, but I think the act of writing helped somehow to provide more than just motivation.

WAITING IN THE WINGS: Johnny is out there. How could dis be ‘appenin? Who gwine ‘elp me now wid de odder children? Lawd, please, please, do Lawd….

RUN OUT/GUNSHOTS: COLD FEAR, HOT ANGER, NUMBNESS. Dem hit smaddy, ah know it, it soun like Johnny, but maybe is one a de odder bwoy dem — O Gawd!

BEAT 1: Miss Etta sey dem fine de body out inna de street… wai, woy, woy. GET UP. It cant be him…. FISTS. Mi haffi look. STEP, STEP, CHANGE BACK AND STRETCH HANDS. Noooooo TURN BACK AWAY. HOLD STOMACH. REACH FLING DOWN & ROLL. No, no, no REACH UP. Johneee…. CONTRACT/RELEASE ON KNEES. Ah did tell him an tell him…. TO FRONT. STAND. A mi firs-bawn.... INTO RELEVE/SIDE EXTENSION, O Lawd…. SHUFFLE with OPEN/CLOSE etc….

BEAT 2: De bwoy was such a joy as a baby. ARMS WITH SLOW EXTENSION. Ah caan bear to see him like this. TURN BACK TO SIT….. SPIRAL TURNS …. “GOOD, GOOD, GOOD MAN”, A affi strong fe de children sake, dem love him so much…. STRONG SIDE EXTENSION INTO ROLLS.

BEAT 3: SUSPEND TURN WITH EXTENSION. Whooo see de man who do dis? Yuh? If a evva ‘ear sey dem roun’ ‘ere yuh see… Oh Gawd help me in dis grievous time…. SHUFFLE INTO CONTRACTION TURN. Woi, woi – Lawd a massy, Johnny dead. RELEASES WITH BOUNCE/LEGS AND ARMS. Oonu know sey de bwoy nevva hurt anybody…why it ‘ave to be ‘im? REACH TURN REACH UP GRAB….RIPPLE…. TWO CONTRACTION TURNS. “SHE COMPLAINED & SHE CRIED”…. FLOOR, DRAG & TURN. Gi me strength Lawd.

BEAT 4: REPEAT BEGINNING…. KNEES DOWN FRONT…. De ongle ting is to lef di pickney dem with Mama in de country & go look wuk up so…. UP INTO SIDE EXTENSION EARLY Cousin Ici did sey anytime I want to come up…. SHUFFLE BACK TO CLUTCH HEAD/DECISIONS.
