mental health & coping skills

As a person with depression and anxiety, I have suffered through a lot. Growing up I did not know what was going on with me, I just knew I had to push through and get my priorities in order. I did not known about resources, therapies, or coping skills. Not many people know that there are more options when it come to coping with mental health. Many people feel they are stuck especially when they don’t have physical support from the individuals in their daily life. Unfortunately when it comes to mental health, people have to do the deep dive search for resources themselves. Luckily, being someone with mental health issues I have learned different coping skills. What also has helped me is working in the field of ABA. In the field of ABA you pick up and learn many types of coping mechanisms that are a great fit for those dealing with mental diseases. Things that I have found surprisingly helpful have been the use of sensory toys and stress balls. I use there tools with my autistic clients at work. when I first began working with autism I would find myself fidgeting with the sensory toys as well. It took a minute but I was able to realize that these sensory toys were benefiting me as well. There are many sensory toys such as noise makes, fidget spinners, and squishy balls with liquid inside or glitter. That was one tool I found very helpful. Another would be puzzles. It kept my mind occupied. I was doing 500-1000 piece puzzles in a quiet room at home where I would be able to shut the world out. If physical puzzles are not for you, there are many alternatives; such as crossword puzzles, diamond painting, video games, sudoko, etc. I have found joy in all these alternatives. I have found it keeps your mind distracted, but at ease.

another coping skill I have found that is super helpful is the counting your senses. you start with 5 and work your way down to 1. for example count 5 things you see, 4 things you touch, 3 things hear , two things you smell, and one thing you taste.

It is mainly to help calm anxiety, but I have noticed it has also been very useful for my depression as well.

There are many work books or self help books that can be used to also helps. I orders a few on amazon myself and have felt the skills in those books are very useful.

There are many ways to find help coping with mental health. It is not all just therapists and laying on couches. there are many things a person can do to ease that part of your mind. You just have to find what works best for you.
