[ID: A drawing of four characters against a teal square background.
One character is human looking with pale colored skin, long black hair, an X shaped scar on their chin, and black painted nails. This character is wearing a plain black, slightly tattered T shirt over a striped grey long sleeved shirt, blue jeans, black boots, and a metal studded band on their right wrist.
This character is pointing at something offscreen with their right hand and their face is turned left to look at the second character. The third character, an Egyptian mongoose, is standing behind the first character’s right leg and mimicking their actions. Similarly pointing at something offscreen with their right foreleg with their face turned left towards character four.
The second character is an alien that resembles an anthropomorphic opossum with a mane of black quills and a pink hog-like nose. This character is wearing an off-white T shirt and bright orange pants. They are sitting perched on character four’s neck and shoulders with their long furless tail wrapped around character four’s throat. They’re facing left, looking at character one.
The fourth character is a large bear-like creature reminiscent of an  Amphicyon giganteus with shaggy brindled fur. Their body is partially obscured by characters one and three as it curves around them to look at what character one is pointing at offscreen. /End ID]

Scott x Dex
Dex looked at the back of Scotts head, the city of Bagastan, had opened his eyes to these strangers around him, and one thing he quickly noted was Scott wasn't what he was made out to be, after being swaddled in that blanket, it wasn't something he could easily erase from his mind. How could he?
Feeling his stomach tighten, Dex psychically shivered, not from disgust, but from the on going flips his stomach was creating, the butterflies that blossomed and fluttered about. This was something he hadn't Encountered all too often, if at all. Walking behind the rather tall druid, Dex started looking around, tailor shops, hat shops, equipment stock, bakeries, all of the amazing things around them that would easily play into their hands in the future.
Walking up to Scott who was in the middle of a conversation with Preston about weither or not Chili was a soup or a stew, Preston arguing that it was a soup while Scott was insisting that it was a stew. "Bug off, crooked, Scottie and I are going shopping," Dex declared as he wrapped his arms around Scotts arm and hugged it to his chest as if he was a needy child.
"Excuse me!" Preston began to argue but Dex looked back at him.
"Chili is in fact a stew and if you wanna fight, we'll do so after I take Scott with me somewhere," Dex shot back, "why don't you and Clarissa find a tavern or something," Dex waved them on and all while Scott was in the process of protesting, Dex lifted his head and looked up at him wickedly.
"What are we... Doing?" Scott asked both wildly concerned but also confused as Dex began dragging him through the shopping center, so the question came out as a whisper, as if this was something secretive that he might have forgot about.
While the pair walked away, Clarissa glanced at Preston and grabbed onto his jacket as he headed toward the tavern but Clarissa pulled him back toward the Harriet Mongoose Inn. "But-!" Preston stomped once before the fighter pointed.
"I am not taking care of yet another drunk, who throws up because he's a lightweight, Preston," Clarissa folded her arms much like a mother would to a stubborn child.
"Fine!" Preston stomped before marching to the Inn, complaining under his breath as Clarissa walked behind him, suddenly feeling like a bodyguard.
~~~
"Again, Dex, where are we going?" Scott asked while they rounded a corner and Dex stopped before looking at Scott with a warm smile and doe eyes.
"We're going shopping!" Dex clapped and Scott backed up from the cat.
"Why? Why are we shopping? I tend to go with Clarissa," Scott found himself anxiously scratching at the side of his thumb with his index finger.
Dex's gaze softened, "well, because you've kind of been busy taking care of everybody else, and making sure that we are all okay, and I think you need to unwind too, and what better way to do it than with your buddy ol' pal, Dex-y boy," Dex started seriously before he grinned toward the end of his answer as he gently jabbed his thumb to his heart like he was a proud Boy Scout.
Scott's hand dropped down to his side as he looked at Dex with eyes that weren't quite readable, mulling over all the possible outcomes but this wasn't the answer he was expecting, nobody seemed to follow his leadership, everybody is still chaotic even up to this point, "I-I mean, I mean I guess," he lifted his hand up and massaged the nape of his neck.
Dex grabbed onto Scott's hand and walked towards a tailor, "I know I bust your chops a lot bud, but don't think we don't see it, you're the one cleanin' us up when we are drunk off our asses, you try what you think is right for the team, you put yourself in the back just to make sure we are all okay," Dex patted the taller boys shoulder before he rushed Scott inside and looked for one of the working tailors, surprisingly it was a woman wearing a long striped sleeve with a vet over top and matching trousers.
'Purrfect!' Dex thought as he shoved Scott ever so slightly toward her, "Good day!" Dex said as he caught her attention, her glasses dipping on the bridge of her nose, her ears extra pointy, and her haired pulled back into a blonde bun, "my buddy Tippy Twoshoes, here has been looking for a new wardrobe, you see-"
"And who are you? Who's paying? Is there a type of style your looking for Mr. Twoshoes?" The woman asked.
Scott glanced down at Dex with anxious eyes but Dex only patted his shoulder, "whatever my dear friend here wants, he gets, I'll be back shortly!" Dex said with a cheery tone as he skipped out the door, his tail flicking side to side happily.
Scott glanced at the woman with scared eyes, 'why am I so scared, it's just a life or death game, right? No harm, no foul, just a game... just a game...' he thought to himself as he inhaled.
"My name is Marjorie, now what type of fabric would work best for you?" She asked as she gestured toward a more quiet and calm area, and began taking length measurements.
Scott trembled at the thought, Clarissa was the only one who knew, maybe if he told these NPC's that he was trans, maybe when he got back to the real world it would become easier, "uh... I'm not fully a guy," he looked at the elf with eyes of fear, "so, uhm, bigger clothes from the men's side, would be appreciated," he began scratching at the side of this thumb once more before Marjorie grabbed onto his hand with a smile only a mother could have painted on her features.
"Of course dear, you are my client after all, what you want to make you feel as you want, is what I want for you," she patted the tops of Scott's shoulders as she wandered off to find some clothing that she could find appropriate for such a request.
Scott fidgeted in his spot before he looked up as soon as the bell to the store rung and relaxation overcame him when he saw that Dex was back, looking around with a hint of worry, before spotting him and smiled as he rushed over, shoving his hands into the hoodie given to him.
"Where'd you go?" Scott asked.
"Oh nowhere, I went to go see where Clarissa and Preston went so we could head straight back when we have to leave," Dex said as he looked around for the elf lady-tailor, "so, did you find anything?" He asked.
"Not yet," Scott mumbled just as Marjorie returned with arms full of clothing.
"Try all of these on Mr. Twoshoes," she said as Dex snickered that she was still using the fake last name, "close the curtain and try them on and once you walk out, your friend here will help you decide which one works best.
Scott nodded his head as he stepped inside the changing room and he began removing his clothes, all while Dex sat down in a comfortable chair, removing his hands from the hoodie and holding onto what seemed to be tape, a perfect gift for Scott one day, not today, but eventually.
Slinking his hands and tape back into his pocket, Scott walked out wearing a dark blue button-up with a white vest and black trousers, "well?" Scott asked and Dex grinned.
"Do you like it?" Dex asked and Scott's eyes beamed with joy for the first time this entire trip.
"It feels amazing," Scott looked at Marjorie with clasped her hands together with a proud smile.
Excuse me ma'am.
You said something about hyenas being canine/feline hybrid or something?
And the whole gender thing?? What gender thing.
Can you elaborate?
I would normally look this up but i have the math exam to decide my life tomorrow and can't afford to go down this rabbit hole immediately. Also this is more fun?
no problem at all! I love to talk about this, hyenas are some of my all-time favorite animals.
k, so: hyenas are commonly mistaken for canids, but they ain't canids. They ain't even in the Carnivoran suborder Caniformia w/ canids, bears, raccoons, etc. They're in suborder Feliformia, along w/ felids (cats), mongooses (includin' meerkats), fossas, an' civets. Their closest living relatives, taxonomically speaking, are animals like this:
Tumblr media
and that also means that your average hyena (whether spotted, brown, striped, or aardwolf) is more closely related to Stationmaster Tama in ancestry than it is to a wolf or coyote.
Tumblr media
the thing is, hyenas have historically and prehistorically wound up filling some very canid-like niches. Although the line of 'dog-like hyenas' is today only known from the aardwolf, even the 'bone-crushing hyenas' still have comparatively long muzzles that they use for catching prey by chasing and biting, rather than the heavy focus on ambush tactics that felids tend to use. Hyenids and canids are both well-adapted to running, suck ass at climbing, and have roughly-padded paws with non-extensible claws.
Tumblr media
ironically, the most 'dog-like' hyenas around today specialize in an insectivorous diet. Many of the general hyenid characteristics are still considered very feliformian by researchers: their scent-marking, their mating habits, the way they loaf:
Tumblr media
and if you take a good look at hyenas—especially spotties—compared to canids, you'll notice that their builds are still pretty different, with long, strong necks and a build where the hind legs are noticeably shorter than the forelimbs.
Tumblr media
(source)
as for the gender thing:
female spotted hyenas have such high levels of androgens that they not only tend to be bigger than the males, but they also have dicks and balls of their own.
No, really! The vulva and clitoris of the female (ovary-bearing) hyena takes the form of a 'pseudopenis' that can be as long as the phallus of the male (semen-bearing) of the species; it's usually only distinguishable by the shape of the glans, or if the hyena in question is pregnant, nursing, or actively engaged in reproduction. Female hyenas actually give birth through their pseudopenis (which usually results in some pretty gruesome tearing), and they have a false scrotum of fatty tissue formed from part of the labia. This leads to a situation where the females have complete control over when and whom they mate with.
Tumblr media
it's widely asserted that this is linked to the tendency (note, it's a tendency: there are observed cases of dominant males, typically the son of a dominant female) of female spotted hyenas to take the socially dominant role in interactions with males, but there is strong evidence that it's actually social factors that determine who is in charge in a spottie clan.
Do you have any headcannons for the pets?
a plethora
and i will take this opportunity to share 1 random one pulled directly from my mind
so this headcanon is based on a thing that annoys me greatly. and its the fact that sunil is a banded mongoose. which is a species of mongoose only found in africa. it would have been so easy to just pick a species actualy found in india (i think having him be a stripe neck mongoose couldve been fun) but no.
but anyway this is just a bunch of preamble to my headcanon of him being mixed indian with african descent. i couldnt really find any good sources on what country in affrica banded mongooses are most common in, if i could i would set his african side there but for now it shall just be ✨️vague✨️
this headcanon pertains more to a human au, but still can aplly to him regularly anyway so :p
Continuation to THIS
@mxncub
She'd smelled the boy before she'd seen him, the wind guiding his scent right to her nostrils in what would have been like waving a meal in front of a hungry predator, had she not loved the child. But not all animals in these lands loved the child; the nocturnal ones, for starters, seldom interacted with him directly, and so hadn't gotten to meet him much. So Bagheera tracked him, and reached him before anything else to could.
Bagheera emerged from the shadows, darkness pouring out of darkness, and the mancub ran to her, crashing into her neck and rambling on about noises. She couldn't blame him for being scared, even many adult animals feared the night, the fact he'd been brave enough to wander this far from the pack was impressive, though she wouldn't give him praise, because it was reckless. She pressed her chin against the boy's back, nuzzling him like she would a cub of her own she was attempting to comfort.
"Of course you can, Mowgli," she assured, voice much gentler than the look in her eyes as she scanned the surroundings for these animals the mancub claimed to have seen. There was a juvenile civet watching the scene, and Bagheera couldn't help but be amused. "I believe you're too big for this animal to hurt anyway, look," she told Mowgli, her voice hardened as soon as she was done addressing the boy. "Come on out where he can see you. You're scaring my mancub."
Animals, both nocturnal and diurnal, respected and —perhaps in some occasions— feared her, so the civet didn't question the truth of her word despite the smell of wold clinging to the mancub she'd claimed to be hers. Mowgli was of the wolf pack, but in a way, he's always be Bagheera's. She'd found him that very first day, and the unspoken law of the jungle was always a finders keepers. It didn't risk causing her anger, scurrying out from the shadows and to where the moonlight filtered through the trees. It was a comical animal to look at, a head smaller than the round body it was attached to, with spots all over its body but stripes on its tail; Bagheera knew it was a feline like her, but its face resembled more a Mongoose's than it resembled her own.
"Apologize for scaring him," Bagheera demanded with a scolding tone.
The civel bowed his head at Mowgli. "Apologies, mancub," he said, then scurried off to find a meal.
Bagheera butted her head against the boy's side. "Nocturnal animals aren't much different from those that dwell during the day," she assured.
Cause for Concern: an OC one-shot
Alternate Title: Hurt/Comfort Characters: Rikki, Red Fox, Jupiter Jim, Clem, Rikki's mom (mentioned) Tags: ANGST, Anxiety, Distress, Poor familial relationships, Abuse, Minor Injuries/bruising/scabs, Hurt/Comfort, Blanket forts, Lots of comforting, Additional Tags to be added... Summary: Rikki gets a letter in the mail and Red has a right to worry. Word Count: ~1,799 -x- A/N: I know what you're thinking. "Goosey! This isn't any of the updates you promised us >:C what's up with this OC baloney?" -- Ok, yes, but listen; I wrote this mainly to practice writing Red Fox and Jupiter Jim since I'll be (ahem) writing them very soon for a certain somethin'-somethin' (Also? I need to update Let's Make a Deal and this was good practice to get back into writing for Rikki). I won't be uploading this to my Ao3. Read Cause for Concern under the read more:
It started with a letter—a small black envelope that came in with the rest of the mail: the bills, the take-out menus, and the weekly Stock and Shop circulars.
It was addressed to Rikki, which was odd to Red since Rikki never received mail; at least nothing intimate.
"Hey, Rikki! You got mail today!" Red said as soon as the mongoose returned from her shift at Clem's. She presented Rikki with the black envelope, her tail swishing excitedly.
"That's for me?" Rikki raised a brow.
They settled down at the kitchen table. Red sat across from Rikki, who examined the mysterious piece of mail. There was no return address, and the envelope was perfumed with something that made Rikki's nose wrinkle. She turned the envelope over, and that was when she saw it; the ivory wax seal depicting the image of fang—her family's crest.
Red's grin shrank as Rikki tensed, the color draining from her face, "Well? Who's it from, Rik?"
"It's… ah…," Rather than answering Red, Rikki reached for their salt shaker and unscrewed the metal cap. She poured a perfect circle onto the wooden surface, then dropped the envelope into its center.
Suddenly, it burst into a column of purple flames.
"Oh, my stars!" Red gasped. Her red banded-tail morphed into a giant hand and reached into the cabinet under the sink for the fire extinguisher.
"Don't worry, it'll put itself out," stated Rikki, unbothered by the phenomena. "It's a hex message."
"A 'hex message?'" Red furrowed her brow as the flames flickered before them, contained within the circle of salt. "I've heard of chain letters cursing folks, but this is just plain rude! Who would do such a thing?!"
"My mom."
"Oh," Red's tail twitched. It was a touchy subject they never discussed, mainly because Rikki avoided any conversation regarding family relations—especially if they were about her mother.
When the purple flames disappeared—embers and all—a scorch mark was left behind; Rikki buffed it out with the sleeve of her hoodie. Now that the letter was 'cleansed,' she sliced open the side of the envelope with her claw and emptied a folded piece of parchment into her hand.
The apartment fell silent as Rikki read the letter. Red knew better than to pry, even if the suspense kept her at the edge of her seat.
"Mom wants me to come home—for a visit, not to stay," Rikki grimaced, "She wants to 'talk.'"
"When?" Red asked while Rikki calmly tore the letter into tiny squares.
"A-sap," Rikki brushed the bits of paper into her palm and stuffed them inside the pouch on her hoodie. She went over to the tiny coat closet by the front door and retrieved an old backpack that would suffice as an overnight bag.
"W-wait, you're leaving now?" Red pushed back her chair. Her stomach twisted, and a feeling of dread penetrated her bones. She had no idea where the influx of anxiety came from, but it was enough to get her fur to stand on end.
Rikki shrugged, "I can't keep the lady waiting."
"What about work?"
"I'll tell Clem somethin' came up. Besides, that's what PTOs are for..."
"Is everything alright?" Red's ears flattened, perturbed. "You're not in trouble, are you?" Why would she think Rikki was in trouble? Maybe Rikki's mother always communicated via hex messages. Perhaps that was just how yūrei's spoke to one another; a cultural thing.
Rikki didn't answer. She quietly stuffed her toiletries into a plastic baggie, then went into her bedroom to gather a change of clothes. The silence between them only told Red that she was right to fret about her roomie's well-being.
"… It's nothing, Red," Rikki answered, slipping her headphones around the back of her neck. "Don't worry about it. I'll be fine."
Red's unconvinced by the string of reassurance; they sound a lot like empty promises, "Rikki…."
"Red, I'll be fine," Rikki crammed her chargers and electronics into the small pocket of her backpack. "I should be back sometime soon-ish. We'll order sushi and throw ourselves a little party, ok?"
"… okay," Red stepped out of Rikki's way, reluctantly letting the mongoose pass by. She escorted Rikki to the elevator down the hall and playfully elbowed her in the arm, "Call me if you need back-up, yeah?"
"Whatever floats your goat, space ace," Rikki snorted as she waited for the elevator's arrival. She slung her bulky backpack over her shoulder, "And speaking of goats, I better call Clem…."
Rikki forced a smile as the elevator doors slowly closed. Red saw past the mongoose's attempt at feigning confidence; the distant, fearful look in her eyes gave her away. Red suppressed the urge to summon the elevator and prevent Rikki from leaving.
Red told herself that it was all in her head, the idea that nothing good would come from Rikki's trip to her mother's. She knew Rikki could take care of herself.
Rikki will be back before you know it, Red thought to herself. It'll be alright. I'm sure her mother's a lovely person...
__________
Rikki didn't come home the next day. Or the following day. Or the day after that. When Red tried reaching Rikki on her cell phone, her attempts led her directly to the mongoose's inbox.
Not even Clem heard from Rikki, although he was instructed to 'use her sick days if she ran out of PTO.'
Red kept herself busy with menial chores to steel her nerves and stop her imagination from crafting worst-case scenarios. When she wasn't cleaning the apartment, the yōkai volunteered at the community theater, ran errands, and hunted for Scor-Pion with Jupiter Jim.
"Why so blue, Red?" Jupiter Jim asked during one of their stakeouts atop the eccentric actor's apartment building. "You mustn't let Scor-Pion get you down. The elusive fiend will show himself soon enough!"
"It's not that," Red sighed. "It's my roomie/friend! She's been gone for almost a week, and I've lost all forms of direct communication with her! And even if I wanted to go searching for her, I have no idea where she could be!"
"Hm, that is quite the predicament. I wouldn't be surprised if Scor-Pion is behind your friend's mysterious disappearance!"
"I doubt it…," Red peered through her binoculars and scanned the city's skyline, hoping to spy Rikki. She perked up when she felt Jupiter Jim's hand clasp onto her shoulder, "Sir?"
"Have faith in your friend," Jupiter Jim consoled. "The universe is a vast place, yet we all find our way home sooner or later. We must welcome the weary when they return, but to do so, it's crucial to keep our spirits high."
Red smiled weakly at the profound piece of wisdom, "Thank you, Sir."
The mood was ruined when Jupiter Jim mistook an old lady with a green skin complexion as Scor-Pion. Fortunately, Red's prehensile tail was strong enough to hold the space adventure back from ambushing the strange senior citizen.
If only Red used her tail to keep Rikki from leaving...
_____________
It was Wednesday night. Red had finished washing the dishes and was now standing at the kitchen counter, prepping vegetables for dinner. She was so preoccupied with peeling potatoes that she failed to notice someone unlocking the front door.
And that someone was Rikki.
"Hey, I'm back," Rikki announced as she closed the door behind her.
"Rikki!" Red exclaimed, dropping the potato peeler and spud into the sink. She ran over to Rikki and hugged her tightly, "Leaping light-years, you have no idea how worried I was! You didn't call or text, and Clem said—"
Red froze. Her eyes darted from Rikki's black eye to the bruise on her cheek. Several small knicks speckled the side of her brow. They were scabs now, but the implication that Rikki had bled was still there.
So this was the kind of relationship Rikki had with her mother: a bad one.
Rikki isn't put off by the horrified look on Red's face, "Honestly? It's not as bad as it looks. In fact, I think things went better than I expected." She tried maintaining a modest tone, but it faltered.
I knew I shouldn't have let you go, Red frowned. Hesitantly, she tried reaching up to touch the bruise on Rikki's cheek.
"I'm gonna go take a shower," Rikki said as she casually ducked away from Red's hand. "I had to take the long way back, and I'm kinda gross. Do you need the bathroom?"
"N-No, you go ahead. I'm making stew for dinner. Would you like some?"
"Naaah. I'm not that hungry…."
Red nodded, "Copy that." She watched Rikki's bushy tail drag across the floorboards on her way towards the bathroom.
The universe is a vast place, yet we all find our way home sooner or later…
"Hey, Rikki?"
"Hmm?"
"Welcome home…"
It's such a warm, simple greeting, yet it meant so much to Rikki. She got as far as the hallway before she grabbed onto the wall for support. She sank to the floor and curled in on herself, trembling.
In a split-second, Red's beside her. She held Rikki close, protecting her by wrapping her striped tail around her body. She never heard Rikki cry before; the mongoose is quiet with the occasional whimper that breaks Red's heart.
Red held her tighter, "… We can still order sushi if you want…."
Rikki sniffled, "Yeah, I-I'd like that."
"Heh heh, good! Honestly, I was getting tired of peeling all those potatoes!"
Stacks of aluminum take-out containers are left on the kitchen table with empty plastic cups of soy sauce. They make good on their promise to throw themselves a party. So Red and Rikki dragged their mattresses out from their bedrooms and constructed a blanket fort around them.
Once their nightly bathroom rituals are completed, they pile into their fort. Red noticed a few more bruises on Rikki's forearms that were previously hidden by the mongoose's hoodie.
"Clem said he'd give me the day off tomorrow," Rikki said as she slid her phone underneath her pillow. "I told him I had a rough trip. He understands."
"Aw, that's nice of him," Red yawned as she rolled onto her side, facing Rikki. Goodness gracious, who would've thought all this worrying could be so exhausting...
"Hey, Red?"
"Yeah?"
"Thank you," apologized Rikki, her voice hoarse. She stared up at the canopy of mismatched blankets and bedsheets, "I'm sorry I didn't keep you in the loop..."
"Don't worry about it, Rik," Red scooched over towards Rikki, "I understand."
They nestled against each other, their tails entwined--another layer of comfort. Red felt obligated to ensure Rikki fell asleep and didn't stay awake to think about whatever cruelties she endured at her mother's. Only when Red was sure Rikki was fast asleep did she finally allow her eyelids to shutter.
