"Shit." It just occurred to him.

"What," Dylan asks, stretched out on the couch next to him, not looking up from his doomscrolling on Twitter. At least some things never change.

Alex bites his lip. "I'm gonna have to do an Insta post, won't I?"

"Oh, yeah." Dylan looks irritatingly unbothered by the revelation. Alex kicks his ankle. At least that gets Dylan to look at him, even if he's making an outraged 'what was that for' face.

"I don't even know what to say!"

Sure, there'd been rumors for months, but it's the NHL. When weren't there rumors. Alex had somehow, stupidly, foolishly, always thought he'd be a part of whatever rebuild would be happening. Well. Looks like Kyle had had other plans. Maybe Alex should've put more stock in the increasingly pinched looks Jonny had been wearing after every meeting with the FO, but it's a moot point now.

"Oh, pssh, that's easy. I basically had a draft sitting ready in my notes since forever," Dylan waves him off, face already buried in his Twitter timeline again. "I wanna thank the team and the fans for an amazing time in Chicago," he drones on, voice entirely flat like he's reading this out, except Alex can see that all Dylan's got open right now is a video of Noodle. Apparently it's a super bones day. "And then you go on, like, super excited to come play in," Dylan frowns, faltering.

"Ottawa," Alex supplies.

"Ottawa," Dylan repeats, like it's the first time he's heard it, like Alex hasn't been freaking out about this trade for the last hour and a half.

"How's your own talks going?" Alex asks more to keep Dylan talking than anything. He still doesn't know how to feel about this damn trade. "And send me that draft, will ya?"

"Yeah, sure." Dylan nods absently, chewing on the drawstring of his hoodie, tapping away on his phone before throwing it to the side with a huff, finally looking at Alex. "You know how talks are going, man, there are no talks."

It used to make Alex' heart sink. Now, though, it's maybe not so bad. Alex won't be in Chicago anymore anyways, there's really no reason for Dylan to stay here any longer, either. Not when the Hawks never could see what they had in Dylan.

Alex's phone buzzes with a text. He pulls up the notes app, copies over what Dylan has sent him and starts editing to make it sound like himself. It's a good starting point. Alex very carefully doesn't think about what it means that Dylan has had this draft on his phone since who knows how long, ready to whip it out whenever. All it's missing is the new team name. He deletes the XXXs, fills it in with 'Senators' instead.

Dylan's an RFA, but with the Hawks not even offer sheeting him he's basically free to sign wherever.

"What does Morris say?"

Dylan sighs. "That we'll talk next week. But he asked if I had any, like, destinations in mind."

Dylan makes a face. Alex hums in agreement. He doesn't want to move, either. The mere idea of having to pack up this whole house, with Archie and Burt and Ralph, and move it all to a whole different country... it's a lot.

Still. Ottawa isn't the worst place in the world. And then Alex has an idea. It doesn't take him long to find it, there's always someone quick to do those jersey swaps and Alex only feels a little bad swiping the picture without asking. This is more important though.

By the time he's done he's got a post on Instagram thanking the Hawks for five wonderful years, likes count already going up as Alex watches, and a shiny new Insta bio and profile pic. At least this way Dylan will hopefully remember who Alex plays for now.

Alex things of their apartment in Chicago as special because it was the first place of their own that they lived together (Obviously that last year in Erie they lived together too... did you know that? That one's real, they shared the same billet in the last year, adorbs) There are currently discussions about whether they should get their own place to live in the off season (at the moment they split their time between Alex's parents place and Ryan Strome's toronto place.... WHY I DON'T KNOW?) and they're leaning towards living in Toronto for the offseason but Alex feels bad about abandoning his parents that way. (He's their baby and he's well aware he's their baby)

hello darling! stromecat is an excellent pairing to get into, 100% recommend!! these are four of my fave stromecat fics and, in general, the four i would recommend as a precursor to the pairing! :)

Race Like Falcons to Crash and Burn by Linsky is a deliciously long (roughly 75k) a/b/o story set in the (equally amazing) wolfverse series, but it can be read as a standalone! (i think it's also one of the longest stromecat stories on ao3? maybe?)

I’ve recently been rereading some of my favourite wolfverse stories since the preseasons started up (argh, your stories are all just so good?!!) and was wondering if you would do any sequels to Sid/Geno’s or Dylan/Alex? 😊 Also, the Staal brother group chat is so perfect and makes me laugh 🤣 would love to see some more of the Staal brothers too

Oh man, *would* I?? I have had a Dylan/Alex sequel bouncing around my head for ages. The complication is that it involves a lot of other wolves, so I keep putting it off so that I can write other couples' stories first. Speaking of which: McMattDrai seems to have won out in the battle in my head over which wolfverse pairing (tripling?) to write next. It maaaay be happening right now. 😏

As for Staals -- yes! Jeff/Eric super needs to happen at some point. Not so sure about a Sid/Geno sequel, but at the very least, they will show up in the Dylan/Alex sequel. 😁

“What’s up?” Dylan asked Alex while they were putting on their equipment for practice. It didn’t take a genius to notice that Alex was in a bad mood, which was odd because Alex was always in a good mood.

Alex shrugged his shoulders. “It’s nothing.”

Dylan leaned over to bump his shoulder with Alex’s. “C’mon, ‘Kit.”

He shrugged again. “It’s really not important. I’m fine.” Dylan let it go, for a while.

Practice was good. It let Alex work through his frustrations and by the end of the practice, he was smiling again, which Dylan was happy about. After practice, they showered and changed before walking out of the arena together, both of them smiling and laughing. But, Alex’s smile fell when he checked his phone.

“What?” Dylan asked.

Alex shook his head. “It’s nothing.”

Dylan sighed and shoved him with his shoulder harder than he really needed too, causing Alex to step to the side and send a glare towards Dylan. “Dude.”

“I’m your best friend, tell me what’s wrong.” Dylan pressed.

Alex sighed and looked down at his phone, Snapchat still open. He held down on your name to replay the Snap and showed it to Dylan. It was a picture of you and Ralph curled up on the couch.

Dylan looked at the photo for a good long while before looking back at Alex with the most confused expression. “I don’t understand?”

“She’s snuggling Ralph.” Alex said, as if that would somehow explain everything.

Dylan paused. “So, you’re upset your girlfriend is getting along with your dog?”

“They’resnuggling.”

“Alex,” Dylan deadpanned. “Please for the love of god, spit it out.”

Alex sighed. “(Y/N) would rather spend time with Ralph than with me and she snuggles him and not me.”

Dylan’s lips twitched up. “You’re saying your girlfriend snuggles Ralph and not you?”

“That’s exactly what I’m saying! If we’re on the couch, Ralph is between us, resting against her. In bed, she’ll pull Ralph up between us.”

Dylan laughed. Dylan laughed hard.

“It’s not funny.” Alex grumbled, which only made Dylan laugh harder.

“What did you expect to happen?” Dylan asked, his eyes sparkling with mischief. “(Y/N) is a dogperson, not a catperson.” Alex shoved Dylan, who stumbled to his side, unable to keep his balance since he was laughing so hard.

“It’s not funny.” Alex repeated.

“It’s hilarious, actually.”

“What am I supposed to do!?” He asked, and Dylan shrugged.

“Ralph is her little spoon and she’s your little spoon, just do a spooning train.” Alex tighten his lips as Dylan’s laughter carried over into his ‘advice.’ “I’m serious,” Dylan added.

“I can’t believe we’re having this conversation…”

“I can’t believe you’re jealous of your dog.” Dylan laughed.

Very rarely. They're on the same page about a lot of stuff, but also, Brinks is WELL aware that a LOT of teenage Dylan's opinions boiled down to 'whatever Connor thinks' and Alex is a little bit like 'I don't want to influence his opinions the way Connor does because I don't think that's healthy'

religion, Brinks would describe himself as agnositc. Dylan would too... IF HE KNEW THE WORD instead he'd probably be like "Uh, I guess, I don't know, I don't not believe but I also don't not not believe, but at the same time if someone wants to come along and prove me wrong, that would be cool, but then again, proving it kind of goes against the existence of faith so 🤷‍♀️" and then Alex would be like "That's called agnostic" but Dylan would always say 1000 words instead of just one... LOL Marriage: DYLAN HAS A BINDER OK. HE HAS A PINTEREST BOARD. HE HAS PLANS. They're going to get married one day, but also, he doesn't want the scrutiny on CONNOR if DYLAN were to decide to come out (please dont ask me how Dylan's brain works because honestly babes, I have no idea) so it has to wait... Children: Ha ha, this is so weird because obvi IRL THEY ARE BOTH ACTUAL DADS. Dylan really wants to be a dad, and Alex is pretty keen on 'giving Dylan whatever he wants' so kids are probably there for the future but not until after retirement. Death - nope, Dylan will not discuss this. He has NO PLANS for ANYONE TO EVER DIE OK? NO THANK YOU. DEATH IS NOT WELCOME IN THIS HOUSE.

Alex, Alex, Alex, Alex, Alex, Alex.... DYLAN STROME WHAT ARE YOU BRINGING TO THIS RELATIONSHIP? Oh, you're bringing being a perfect lil cinnamon bun. I will allow that. That seems like a fair division of labour to me. 16 - Do they keep secrets? Lie? Cheat? Yes, no, no* (caveat it's complicated, and it depends how you define it) They keep secrets. Mostly because by the time they met, Connor had secured his place as Number 1 Person In Dylan's Life and there is stuff that Connor has told Dylan that Dyl would never share. Similarly, like, if a teammate told Alex something, he wouldn't automatically share that with Dylan. Alex is also VERY aware of how close Dylan is to his brothers, and knows that there's some secrets about them that Dylan wouldn't share. They aren't monogamous... so that's why the last one is complicated. When they're apart (the arizona years, but we don't think about that, also now 😭) they have a psuedo 'road agreement' (they basically have like, a distance agreement, if they're in different cities, it's not cheating for them. They also are open to threesomes. But over the years there has been an interesting shift that only Alex has noticed, which is that if Dylan has something he needs to get off his chest, as a child (not that Alex has witnessed this, but he knows from talking to Trish) that he would go to Ryan first, then, he would have gone to Connor first, and these days he goes to Alex first and Alex is VERY SMUG ABOUT THIS and WILL NEVER MENTION IT in case it changes it.
