i love that there are a couple traits consistent among seemingly all spider-man variants. their wit, they’re dorky-ness, their intelligence. their queerness

but i think my favorite has got to be their artistic creativity. the og peter parker takes photos, miles draws + graffitis, gwen plays the drums, hobie plays guitar, etc.

which only just adds to the un-spider-man-ness of movie!miguel that he, seemingly, doesn’t have any artistic interest or pursuits. his life is so consumed by this need to justify his trauma and make it useful that he doesn’t have anything to healthily express himself and have fun through. he doesn’t have any room left for any personality because he’s too busy being a leader and a weapon.

this also plays into that quick little line from miles in the counselor's office where he mentions not doing much art anymore,,,he's so consumed by this one mission of his (similar to miguel) to figure out how to travel across universes to meet his friends (falsely thinking that will just automatically solve his loneliness) that he's losing that art that makes him happy, purposefully ignoring it because it's not "useful". i think it's also relevant to note that gwen, the character who's defined by her aimlessness, (literally her only goal is survival. like just the bare minimum of "don't be homeless tomorrow", just simple, normal, human self-preservation) opens the movie by going to town on her drum set. on the opposite end of the spectrum miguel and miles are on, she has no goal at all and is fully leaning into her artistic abilities for comfort. ultimately, the difference lies in where these characters are choosing to find comfort. in the pursuit of a singular goal that suppresses emotion in the name of efficiency, or in moment-to-moment explosive self expression that doesn't ultimately make strides towards an end goal?

(honorable mention: hobie and his music. the guitar, ie his art, symbolic of being in touch with your emotions, is something he keeps close with him and uses productively in pursuit of his goals. it's strong, but focused. he's very in control of it. he has figured out how to hit a perfect balance between the two, adding to this big brother/mentor image in relation to gwen and miles.)

#pavitr doesn't have a strong internal conflict just yet #which is why i think he doesn't (explicitly) have an artistic pursuit like the others #the pursuing a goal vs expressing yourself through art thing is just a way for the characters to remedy an emotional problem #i can let it out but not be “productive” or i can “fix it” but not dwell on it much #(this also plays into themes of being focused on the past vs present vs future but that's a whole other analysis) #but pavitr #hes just chilling #he has no such worries #tbh i wouldn't be surprised it he gets some sort of artsy hobby next movie coinciding with some strong internal conflict #i headcanon that he likes sewing and embroidery #it would explain his super detailed and artistic suit #also he just gives of sewist vibes #(coming from a sewing #and also embroiderer) #when az rambles #across the spider verse spoilers #atsv analysis #spiderverse analysis #miles morales #gwen stacy #hobie brown #(kind of) pavitr prabhakar

I sometimes wonder if Miguel ever tried recreating that sense of family he had with Gabriella with Miles and Gwen...except Miles and Gwen only received that toxic parental side from him and not the healthier, wholesome part he had with Gabi because he's mentally unwell and grieving and punishing himself daily as penance.

This is a really good thought cause Gwen alludes to this in her rant at Miguel during the Go Home Machine sequence, “Maybe you weren’t hard enough on him!”. Miguel views his actions based on being Spider-Man not as being Miguel. Either way, he is acclimated to loss in grief in such a unique way that it just seems difficult for him to understand that others aren’t or don’t become susceptible to his alternative to grief/guilt.

It would be plausible that Miguel is sort of worried about gaining a connection with members of the society (especially the younger ones) as he’s lost a lot in his life (if his backstory is any similar to his comic + gabi) and the healthier side would undoubtedly led to a less formal work relationship and something that bleeds into what little life he has outside of Spider-Man as Miguel.

For all intents and purposes Miguel genuinely believes that he is being reasonably protective of Miles and Gwen by over-protecting the canon as he doesn’t want them to experience the pain of over-stepping cosmic and normal boundaries like he did along with dampening his emotional investments in them by being harsh. I mean, recently people have been pointing out he tears up when Miles tells him he can’t not save his dad.

His intentions and sentiments towards these kids are pure and based in altruism but his actions and executions of them are destructive if outright hostile.

#the idea that these actions of his are simply tough love opens a new light to why he tried to break Miles spirit towards the end #he genuinely recognized he was getting dangerous as in that position he could’ve easily bitten or knocked out the kid but was still trying #to talk him down in a sense #as cruel as his words were he wanted Miles to realize the weight of his existence and definitely got to angry and heated before hand to be #effective the fact Gwen thought they could still talk after implies she still thought him reasonable and hints this was a show of care of n #his side that went completely south Miguel likely just wants what’s best and it just so happens to include having people get hurt #also supporting the idea od strict harsh parenting as he’s trying to build them up to be strong spider people sort of like parents who want #their kids to be prodigies I mean you can parallel his meeting with Miles to the meeting with his parents #expectations of what he needs to do or should want vs his own sentiments #miles morales #gwen stacy #ghost spider #miguel o'hara #spiderman 2099 #spiderman #atsv #across the spiderverse #spiderverse #ask #anon #atsv spoilers

i spent the last four hours in a mildly delirious rage over the absolute butchery that is the currently popular(? it might be from a couple of weeks or possibly months ago time is fake) “stacy’s dad” video, and as a result i am posting my DEFINITIVE STACY’S DAD LYRICS here. before you consume them we are all going to agree on some facts.

“stacy’s mom” is a song that fountains of wayne wrote to make you, personally, uncomfortable. (listen to how the instrumentals cut out around the word “mom”. the emphasis on the fact that she gave birth to someone the viewpoint character’s age is not an accident.) the people who make “stacy’s dad” covers are, almost universally, trying to make sure you are not uncomfortable at any point; they slip in unsubtle references to the viewpoint character being old enough to drive, for instance, and implicitly also to give meaningful consent. this is rank cowardice and also missing the point.

“stacy’s mom” is a song about a middle-schooler who is so horny he has deluded himself into thinking that his friend’s mother wants to fuck him. this is not a fringe interpretation of the text; it is the text. watch the music video, it’s completely unhinged. any “stacy’s dad” worth the comparison must, therefore, be at least that unhinged.

“stacy’s dad”, the version that i am sharing with you now, is a song about how when you are twelve years old and gay and you do not know any actual gay people and you are flooded with hormones you go fucking insane and start daydreaming that you are going to have a whirlwind romance with a 40-year-old man who has given you no indication whatsoever that he is interested in other men, let alone your dubious pubescent charms.

i cannot emphasize enough that this song, like the original, is sung from a perspective completely detached from reality. stacy’s dad is not going to fuck you. his wife left him and he is sad about it. let the man build his deck in peace.

gotta say I really do enjoy the beginning of Across the Spider-Verse and Gwen’s monologue while she’s pounding on the drums (beware spoilers ahead obviously!)

on the first viewing(yes I saw it in theaters twice) its mostly just a recap of the first movie to get everyone who hasnt watched it over 15 times and knows the plot and a lot of the lines by heart. But as I enjoyed it for the second time in theaters and now when im listening to the soundtrack, Gwen’s monologue is her coping with the aftermath of ITSV. She’s gone through a lot of shit, her mother died, she accidentally caused her best and only friend’s death, shes having tension with her dad due to her double life, and she finally got the courage to make her first friend in a long while, and now she can’t interact with that friend at all. She just got a taste of being able to depend on other people to have her back and BOOM! now shes back to total isolation. and she doesn’t know how to cope. No spider-person ever really does. all of them are bouncing from one responsibility to another than none of them ever have any time to truly process the shit they go through on a daily basis.

That is why Gwen keeps repeating that “He’s[Miles] not the only one.” as she bashes her drums. She’s using him as a vessel to process her feelings. She knows she isn’t the only one, but its a little hard to believe when there is not physical proof of it. So Gwen monologues about how Miles and her are similar.

And while she is dealing with her sudden isolation, she joins a band.

“I didn’t join a band so I could talk about my feelings, I joined so I could hit my feelings with sticks.” (apologies if I misquoted)

She wanted to have friends again. But she can’t connect with any of her peers because they don’t get it. None of them can hope to understand her position as a spider-person who has people around her dropping dead left and right.

And Gwen also doesn’t really give them a chance to be her friend.

because she wasn’t really searching for new friends, its presumably been a month or two since she went through the collider, she’s desperate for connection with her peers. The problem is that none of the kids her age are her peers. Miles is her peer. Hobie and Pavitr end up being her peers and her friends. the bajillion Peters her age are her peers.

Her joining the spider society is both bad and good for her because of this. She’s finally got peers that she can connect with, despite the lack of Miles’ presence, but she also has really shitty role models now. said shitty role models are doing exactly the opposite thing that you’re meant to do with parenting teenagers. They are clipping her wings rather than Miles and his dad “You gotta let him spread his wings man.” Jess and Miguel (and sorta Peter?) won’t let her visit Miles based on rules that are theoretical AT BEST, and she’s effectively trapped in the spider society due to her dependence on the watch so that she can avoid her dad. (side note: WHY DID NOBODY HELP HER PROCESS AND FIX HER DAD SITUATION???) does anybody else think this is a classic setup for an abusive situation? Though she does have Hobie and Pavitr, she is still being isolated from Miles because he’s a “bad influence.”(read: anomaly) I will ask you all again, does anybody else think this is a classic setup for an abusive/culty situation??

I’m sorry but the idea of canon events feel like grade-A bullshit meant to corral the spider people into a single template. They are straight up scaremongering that forces the spider people to endure trauma that they wouldn’t have to go through if they all just flipped Miguel off and helped each other! (can you tell I despise Miguel, i’m aroace i’m immune to the hotness) Miguel 👏 is 👏 making 👏 a 👏 fucking 👏 cult! 👏

All in all, the isolation that Gwen faces after ITSV made her very susceptible to the kinda culty thing that the spider society led by Miguel has got going on rn. All spider people deal with heavy isolation and loneliness, so the thought that maybe all that sacrifice and isolation did actually need to or was meant to happen, is comforting to them. they went through all that pain because they had to, rather than all the deaths could’ve been avoided. The other spider people have never been in Miles’ shoes, in terms of having the ability to actually change so-called fate. So they don’t get it. But now, with Gwen’s father quitting the police force, Gwen is once again Miles’ peer. They both know that they can avoid their dad’s deaths. And you bet they’re going to try.
