Paulinchen: My cats Minz and Maunz are natural-born tree climbers. Friederich: Let's learn to climb just like them! Paulinchen: Of course, they usually have grappling hooks, ropes and utility belts. Friederich: Hey, here's a great tree for climbing! Let me get on your shoulders so I can reach the first branch, ok?(Friederich climbs onto Paulinchen's shoulders.) Paulinchen: Geez, how many bricks do you have in your pockets?! Friederich: Whoa! Hold steady, you weakling! I've almost got it! Move up, move up! Paulinchen: Hurry and grab it before my spine telescopes. Friederich: (grabs the branch) Got it!… hey, don't let go! Hold me up! Paulinchen: (letting go of Friederich) Forget it! You can support your own weight, bowling ball butt. Friederich: Mmph! Mmph! I can't get up! Give me a boost!(Paulinchen unties both of Friederich's shoes and takes them off his feet.) Friederich: Hey! What are you doing?! Don't take off my shoes! Are you nuts? Hey, stop! (Paulinchen starts tickling Friederich's feet.) Friederich: Aack! Oh no! Don't tickle! Pbth! Eek! Hee hee ha ha! Stop it! I can't hold on! (Falls from the tree and lands right on Paulinchen) Paulinchen: Nice landing. I'm probably paralyzed. Friederich: All except your mouth, obviously. I'm not sorry at all. Give me back my shoes. Paulinchen: No.

Die gar traurige Geschichte mit dem Feuerzeug/ The Sad Tale of the Match-Box
(English translation by Mark Twain)
Paulinchen was alone at home,
The parents they down-town did roam.
as she now through the room did spring,
All light of heart and soul a-wing,
she saw wherewith one strikes a light.
"Oho," says she. "My hopes awake;
Ah what a plaything these will make!
I'll rake them on the wall, h'oo!
As oft I've seen my Mother do."

And Mintz and Mountz, the catties,
Lift up their little patties,
They threaten with their pawses:
"It's against the lawses!
Me-yow! Me-yo! Me-yow! Me-yo!
You'll burn yourself to ashes, O!"

Paulinchen heard the catties not,
The match did burn both bright and hot,
It crackled gaily, sputtered free,
as you it in the picture see.
Paulinchen waltzed and whirled and spun,
Near mad with joy for what she'd done.

Still Mintz and Mountz, the catties,
Lift up their little patties,
They threaten with their pawses:
"It is against the lawses!
Me-yow! Me-yo! Me-yow! Me-yo!
Drop it or you are ashes, O!"

But ah, the flame it caught her clothes,
Her apron, too; and higher rose;
Her hand is burnt, her hair's afire,
Consumed is that child entire.

And Mintz and Mountz wild crying,
The while the child was frying,
"Come quick!" they said.  "O Sire.
Your darling child's afire!
Me-yow! Me-yo! Me-yow! Me-yo!
She's cinders, soot, and ashes, O!"

Consumed is all, so sweet and fair,
The total child, both flesh and hair,
a pile of ashes, two small shoes,
Is all that's left, and they're no use.

And Mintz and Mountz sit sighing,
With breaking hearts and crying,
"Me-yow! Me-yo! Me-yow! Me-yo!
How could we let the parents know!"
While round that ash-pile glowing
In brooks their tears keep flowing.
(Original german text by Heinrich Hoffmann, from 1844 [published in Der Struwwelpeter in 1917, Frankfurt on the Main], illustrations by Karl Schrader)

Probably one of my favorite crossovers I've made so far.
And unlike the original CatCF, the kids actually save each other from their dire fates in this version.

I love comparing the book version of StruwwelPeter to its film counterpart bc the tone and message is so radically different.
The book has this “Children are adults with bad intentions and should be scared into obedience for their own good” mindset which is of course incredibly disturbing and harmful to say the least, whereas the film’s message - at least from my perspective was -“Everyone has the potential to be good and bad and it’s up to us to make the right choice. Children are still learning and figuring out what’s right and wrong so they all deserve a second chance.” and I think that’s something we need to see more of. I still tear up a bit at the ending bc it’s just so sweet and uplifting.
Society in general still has a long way to go when it comes to caring for and respecting children, but the change from StruwwelPeter’s original message to the one in the film version is undoubtedly proof that progress has been made and that genuinely warms my heart.

My take on the tailor from The Story of Little Suck-a-Thumb!
Heavily inspired by the Playbill cover of Sweeney Todd's original Broadway run :=3]
