Underrated Stucky Fics #1
I recently put out a call for underrated stucky fics. Thanks to everyone who has made suggestions or submissions! I've decided to do them in batches, as I read them. So keep them coming!
Today's recs are both like little morsels of the richest, finest chocolate that you roll on your tongue. Gone too soon, but linger in your mouth.
Due to this format being a little different to my usual, I won't post screenshots of the tags, but I'll flag archive warnings. I'm also posting stats. I'm tagging people so they can see I rec'd their suggestion, but let me know if you'd prefer I didn't. I'm trying to turn on anon submissions but I am bad at Tumblr 😥

Stuckyflangst summary: This is such a beautiful little treasure. It's so short but just beautifully written. Like, really beautifully written. It contains almost no plot, just very gentle erotica interspersed with memories, but manages to encapsulate the entirety of Steve and Bucky's story in a mere 895 words - what they've shared, what they've lost, how they've changed.

Author Summary:
Bucky Barnes, history teacher and sometimes Human Disaster, has absolutely no major expectations of his class trip to the National Museum of American History.
But, a chance run-in with Steve Rogers irrevocably changes the course of his life.
_
Steve loves his teammates - especially the Maximoff twins, whom Tony has dubbed Steve's "freaky ducklings" - but it's not until he stumbles across a shy, handsome man in the Howling Commandos' exhibit that he realizes what's been missing in his life.
(And when Steve falls, he falls hard - and for always).
Series: What’s Left of Kisses (Part 1)
Review:
Mmm...another addition to the Captain America and modern Bucky Barnes hall of fame….
This was a fantastically sweet and funny fic with huge dash of action and suspense. And not to mention some steaminess, haha
I am totally in love with the idea of teacher Bucky and I think it is so great how that worked into how Steve and Bucky met at the Captain America museum. I also fully subscribe to the head canon that mighty will of Margaret Carter reached out at that moment to squish these two together because they needed each other.
I also like to believe she arranged for the hilarious and cute misunderstanding that led both of our favorite knuckleheads to misinterpret each other's intentions in regards to what the other wanted.
Obviously it works out in the end so that we are blessed with domestic shenanigans, meddling Avengers (Asgardian condoms, anyone?), and a very intense run of action and suspense. Seriously, a million kudos to the author for the build up of the mysterious ex-boyfriend plotline. I was constantly glaring at my phone thinking "oh my god!!! What is going on?!?!"
And then even after the conclusion of all that juicy action...there is a cliffhanger!
DUN...DUN...DUUUUNNNNN!!!!!
Finally, before I wrap up this review to go binge the second part of this series, I want to squeal about Steve (and eventually Bucky) essentially adopting the Maximoff twins. I will never be able to (or want to if we're being honest) get rid of the image of Steve sitting silent, comforting sentry of the two sleeping twins as they sit on the couch. I also adored Bucky just stepping in and being like "these are my babies now...fight me…" after meeting Wanda and Pietro.
Okay, that's enough for me, I'm off to devour the next step in this story so you better go read the fabulous first installment so you can keep up….

Call for submissions: Criminally underrated stucky fics
Friends, followers, stucky fans. I am seeking your submission of criminally underrated stucky fics for an occasional special series.
Tumblr media
What are my criteria?
The fic has moved you, broken you, turned you on
When you look at the kudos count you think "wtf?" I must share this with the world!
Masterpieces lost in the sea of stucky content
For example:
The kudos/hits are really low as a function of the time the fic has been published.
I don't mean that there's a fic you really like that "only" has 500 kudos
In general, for somewhat recent fics I mean less than 50 kudos
If the fic is from like 2014, probably the bar is a bit higher
Please send your nominations to my ask box or inbox! Anonymous is fine!

Underrated stucky fics #3
Thanks everyone for your nominations. I'm working my way through them slowly. Feel free to keep them coming - see the intro post for more info on what's "underrated". Things I have learned so far are that Very Sad Stuff tends to be underrated, but also Very Soft Things. As a result this edition - a likely also future editions - will veer wildly between those two extremes. I'm still largely reccing things with very low hits/kudos at the moment to really shine a light into the back of the cupboard.

Stuckyflangst commentary: Major Character Death. This story is very sad but very beautiful - the writing is a stunning demonstration of how much feeling can be captured in the narration of every day experience. And truly underrated into terms of kudos and hits. Bucky goes to war but Steve doesn't. The character studies are fantastic. The gulf between Steve's life remaining in Brooklyn and Bucky's at the front is drawn out without fanfare or drama. Perfection. It's sad, but it's worth it.
Told in four parts, this story encompasses a year in Steve and Bucky's life prior to Bucky's draft notice, his time on the Italian front, his life for the next five years as he tries to pick up the broken pieces of his shattered mental state and put everything back together, and his inevitable return to Brooklyn for Steve

Stuckyflangst commentary: So if the first fic made you sad, or sounded too sad to read, read this little series next. Just so much fluffy Steve and Bucky post winter soldier making a life together having nice things. First installment has a Vegas wedding, second installment has lots of Steve cooking, and third installment is christmas and holidays and baths. So soft.

Stuckyflangst commentary: Major Character Death. Ouch. Is my commentary. I read this on my MCD + unhappy ending tag binge and this is another one like a knife through the heart. Steve and Bucky both become winter soldiers. Like a brief, beautiful knife piercing through your heart. Only 3010 words and it's everything.

Stuckyflangst commentary: OMG this is so cute and soft. Steve is a dryad and his tree is dying and Bucky helps him. That's it. It's just gentle and sweet and has a happy ending.

Sunday Fic Rec: All Aboard the 20th Century Limited
Another much read classic from the archives today, after a bit of a break. This fic has really stayed with me since I read it. I think because, while it's close to canon, it has quite an interesting take on that, with Steve and Bucky sharing a telepathic connection. The focus is less on the winter solider recovery and more about their experience of one another.
I just love the building of the world they share - the idea that their love and connection persists for all the years they are apart, and then how that brings them together again in the real world.
It's a really beautiful story. And Bucky and Steve seeing each other through each other's eyes is just beautiful. Their love is just strong and true in this one. Also, great Hulk content.

Thursday fic rec: A religious experience
This was one of my favourite fics of 2021. It just blew me away for reasons I can't quite describe. It's the atmosphere of the story, I think - heavy and alien and erotic.
Ethos Logos Pathos by @im-weapon and @elkleggs
Steve enters a church and a fallen angel (Bucky) begs him for help freeing him. By fucking him. An excuse for porn? Yes of course. But the whole fic is eerie and beautiful. Bucky's non-human-ness really comes through, Steve's confusion.
There is also incredible art by @elkleggs which adds so much to the feel of the story. A really beautiful collaboration.
If tumblr is nice to me this is a link to the art.

Sunday fic rec: The seminal Stucky Commander Rogers fic
The Commander Rogers trope is actually relatively recent to Stucky fandom. (See my upcoming essay). This series wasn't the first, but it is the most popular and the one that really kicked off the trope, as recently as June 2019.
And it is SO GOOD. @voxofthevoid excels here in all the ways he does best: great smut, lots of feelings, and a plot which is driven by the growing relationship between Steve and Bucky. Great Avengers family. Nice world building of the AU where Steve survived the war, the Avengers are always separate from SHIELD.
I love both of our boys them so much in this fic. Steve is older, wiser, calmer, with a great sense of humour and tenderness. Being a vox fic, he is a bit mean in bed, exactly how Bucky likes it. Bucky doesn't really believe he can be a hero. Can Steve's faith (and his dick) show Bucky the light?
i'm guilty of treason (i've abandoned all control) by @voxofthevoid
@voxofthevoid has made a truly great contribution to the Stucky fandom with his incredible output. While this fic is his most popular and genuinely contributed towards this and the silver fox Steve trope. He has really showed how Steve and Bucky love each other in any universe.
Thank you vox 💜💜💜

Sunday fic rec: Yes, please, another winter soldier recovery fic
Some days I wake up in this fandom and think - surely I can't read another winter soldier recovery fic? And then @harkbananas writes something so delightful and sweet and funny and gentle that it's like it's 2014 again and all of this is new.
This fic has been a big recent hit, so maybe you've read it, but maybe YOU thought you couldn't read anymore WS recovery fics. Why should you read this one?
BECAUSE IT'S SO SOFT. So well written. Gentle humour, sadness and a little heartbreak but also just wonderful Bucky and Steve. Lovely original characters.

Mid week fic rec: Underappreciated Pre-war gem
Those of you who are regular readers will know pre-war Stucky is my first stucky fic love. I also love recc'ing fics that don't have quite as much love.
This is a beautiful story totally set pre-war. Mutual pining, Bucky being a bit of an idiot in love. Some great pre-war queer Brooklyn content.
What's great about it is Steve and Bucky, despite Bucky trying to deny their love to protect Steve, remain friends, are always there for each other.
What Kind of Man (Loves Like This?) by @levicastho
Just beautiful. A joy to read. Love my innocent boys in love.

400 follower fic rec: Epic SF Stucky
I reread this fic last night and I CRIED. I love it so much. It has all of my favorite Stucky themes - love through time, loss, forgetting, remembering, great of immortality.
The science fiction story provides a perfect frame here. The time and space distortions of interstellar travel are a perfect device to explore stevebucky love.
It's an Interstellar AU and I actually read it before I saw the film, but either way is fine. I think it's better than the film because the Steve/Bucky relationship is a deeper emotional core to the film than the father-daughter relationship in Interstellar.
Bruce is a really great character in this, and I think this story explores him and his relationship to Steve (with whom obviously he shares the serum and associated longevity and what that means in terms of loss) so well. Once again, fandom giving the characters so much more than canon.
If you want a sense of some of the feels in this story check these quotes out:
"Steve was a stranger on this dying earth. The name of Captain America didn't mean anything to anyone anymore."
"He was watching Steve eat like he would've watched a sunrise."
Oof. My heart.
Also, I think Dylan Thomas was a bit of a jerk but this poem is SO GOOD and such a great Stucky poem.
You should also check out the fanvid by the jericho. It's really good.
Into That Good Night by Nonymos
SPOILERS AHEAD BELOW THE BREAK. I just need to get a few things off my chest. Come cry with me if you want.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I love the device of Steve forgetting Bucky. It is so heartbreaking how it is gradually drawn out through the story. The post Winter Soldier meeting, Steve not being able to remember. Killing me.
The Loki and Thor thread to the story is so surprising and so beautiful. I love the character of Loki and it's so great how he's incorporated into this fic. The moral ambiguity of his actions, his final goal being saving Thor.
I love that Steve loves Bucky so much he can visit Bucky's timeline when he's in the singularity. Oh, and those glimpses of the life Bucky lead without Steve are like a dagger through my heart.
I love that the ending is unapologetic about their codependency. They are so beautiful together.
I accidentally used almost the exact scene with finding a grey hair to end one of my fics and only realised on my reread. I'm going to need to put a credit in!

Sunday fic rec: Shrunkyclunks flangst
Wow, so re-reading this took me a while. The whole series is quite the novel. Right up front I'm going to say - to me the heart of this fic is the second part. It's where most of the drama and angst is. Most of the conflict and character development.
The first part is a classic Shrunkyclunks combo - Bucky is a schoolteacher who meets Steve in the Smithsonian. Meet cute! Then there's first dates, getting to know yous, meeting the Avengers family. Nice Wanda and Pietro content all through the fic.
All very sweet, but the reason for this bookmark is Part 2, where there starts to be PLOTS and FEELINGS. Fair warning, this is a fic where Steve makes mistakes, and has to atone. Which I really love. There is also some scene with Steve struggling with depression as well. But these struggles are what make it a richer fic for me.
What's left of kisses by @dracosollicitus
There's also an Endgame fixit Part 3, if you enjoy those, which has Endgame Steve paying a visit and learning a few things.

Weekend Fic Rec: Another post-CATWS classic
This blog has now got me into rereading fics. This one is long, and i really enjoyed revisiting it. The live through time aspect of SteveBucky is one of the greatest aspects of the ship, and this fic uses added magical time travel to bridge the gap between Bucky Barnes and the Winter Soldier.
At its heart this is a Winter Soldier recovery fic, and the way the author tells that story is beautiful and very moving. The relationship with Steve is very important, but it's really about Bucky learning to forgive himself.

Sunday fic rec: Something fun
This fic is just really funny and well put together. This review will be short but it's genuinely better just to go into it blind. I don't want to spoil anything. Classic Captain America isn't what everyone expects... 👀
Just be assured, it's worth it. It's FUN, which due to my flangsty predilections many of these recs are not. Hits all my stucky buttons.

Midweek fic rec: Something fun (+ feels)
Okay, so this fic is not at all flangsty. Sometimes I do actually read things than are funny/fun/sweet and this is all of those. Great mid week read!
Cat Nap by @galwednesday
Grumpy Winter Soldier gets his cat taken by Steve Rogers. Hijinks ensue. Steve is adorable, Natasha is hilarious, great Clint content.
And just the right sprinkling of feels too give you the warm and fuzzies. Like, few pinches of sadness to make you happy they find each other.

Weekend fic rec: A ray of Stucky sunshine
Something fairly new today. Pre-war and WWII Stucky is my origin story. I love Steve and Bucky together pre-war, eventually reunited. I also love the song You Are My Sunshine. This fic has it all, plus amazing art in the form of beautifully rendered comic panels. And whistling. Which breaks my little heart 💔🥺
It's sad and sweet and beautiful, and ultimately has a happy ending. I feel like it had everything you want from a "lifetime of love" story packed into a sweet, tiny package that bursts on your tongue like sunshine.
You Are My Sunshine (My Only Sunshine) by @elkleggs and @profoundalpacakitten
Please have a read! This fic is really underappreciated for how beautiful it is.
